The reconstruction of Kisumu-Chemelil-Muhoroni road also known as Nyanza Sugar Belt Road which links the city of Kisumu, to the towns of Miwani, Kibigori, Chemelil, and Muhoroni, in Kisumu and Nandi counties is expected to commence next month according to Peter Mundia, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director-General.
This comes a month after the state’s treasury approved over US$ 105M for the construction of four roads among them the approximately US$ 45.3M Kisumu-Chemelil-Muhoroni road.

The scope of the work

The construction works are expected to begin at the intersection with Kisumu – Kakamega (A1) road in Kisumu at Mamboleo and progress through Miwani, Chemelil, Muhoroni eventually terminating at Kapsitet junction, where it joins the Kericho -Kisumu road.

The scope of the work mainly involves the resurfacing of the road to class II bitumen standard. Other improvements include the widening of the road to 11 meters, along with the construction of shoulders, culverts, drainage channels, passing lanes, bus stops, and access roads in urban centers. In some sections for example from the Mamboleo/A1 intersection to Great Lakes University, the road will be widened to a dual carriageway.
The entire project is expected to be completed in one year at most since the right of way has already been obtained and the “project road traverses a fairly level terrain and straight alignment,” as per descriptions detailing its implementation plans.

Expectations for the project

Upon completion, the 63-kilometer road project is expected to open up the region it reverses which has been largely closed out for decades after motorists abandoned the motorway, opting for the smoother Kericho-Kisumu road going through Awasi and Ahero. This will ultimately improve trade in the western region and beyond the border to other East African nations.
The road is also expected to significantly reduce travel time between Kisumu, Nandi, and Kericho counties, thus ensuring faster accessibility and delivery of services.

This Road will now open up to serious urban expansion in Kisumu never witnessed before in kenya.
true, it will be a game changer. fast it will spur real estate around the area of great lakes university which has vast unutilized land. the road will also ease business because it is closer to Nairobi than both the Kisumu-kericho-Nairobi road and kisumu- Muhoroni-Londiani-Nairobi road. it is also closer to Eldoret. its also next to kisumu industrial park which is under construction. the leadership of the county is also trying to mitigate future risks of congestion that are witnessed in cities such as Nairobi and mombasa , remember kisumu does not experience traffic jams yet it has many bypasses and feeder roads, they are also trying to decongest the city by building bus packs away from the town in mamboleo( proposed), otonglo( proposed) and nyamasaria area( U/C).. they are try to do away with the buss current bus station in the midst of the town.Lets pray that the three construction companies that are awaded the contract will finish it in time

Chinese investors are setting up a tiles manufacturing company in Miwani that Kisumu County says is a Sh16 billion enterprise.

The factory to sit on a 150-acre piece of land is seeking clearance from the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and other relevant agencies.

Speaking while announcing the new development at his office Thursday, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o expressed confidence that the initiative will improve the economy of Kisumu.

“This will create up to 2,500 jobs and bring lots of benefit to the county,” he said, adding that priority will be given to employment of locals even as technical jobs will be outsourced.

Keda Ceramics Kenya Limited that also manufactures porcelain floor tiles and semi-porcelain tiles is tapping on the increasing demand for housing in Western Kenya to boost its profit margin as it aims to set up a firm foundation for the nascent factory.

Keda Ceramics Managing Director Ruiqin Li also stated that they will use the rehabilitated Kisumu port to export the finished products to other parts of East and Central Africa including Uganda, Congo, Burundi and Rwanda.

“Other than providing for the local demand, we hope to transcend the boundaries and satisfy the market needs of our neighbouring countries,” he said.

Mr Li said they will get all their raw materials from Kisumu and the surrounding neighbourhood.

The firm has branches in India, Italy and directly manufactures ceramics in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal and Zambia.

Keda Ceramics Kenya Limited also established a Sh7 billion cement factory on a 60-acre land in Kajiado County in 2016.

He pointed out that the Kisumu plant will have five different production lines and will roll out their first manufacturing in June next month.

Prof Nyong’o noted that the coming to town of the Chinese investors is happening at a time the county government has commenced a campaign to woo both local and international investors to help boost the economy and create more job opportunities.

“We have organized an international investment conference in September this year tto give us an opportunity to demonstrate the opportunities we have in this part of the world,” he said.

The conference slated for September 24 – 29 will showcase Kisumu as the investment hub for East and Central Africa.

A Sh1.8 billion textile centre of excellence is set to be established at the Kisumu National Polytechnic.
The Regional Flagship TVET Institute for Textile Technology will be established through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the World Bank.
The World Bank-funded project will be the first of its kind in Kenya and East Africa, offering textile training and skills transfers.

Thomas Nyang’or, the project’s implementation unit head of monitoring and evaluation, said they have received the funds and advertised for the tender. Thirty-five local and international contractors have expressed interest.
Construction of the centre starts in August.
The centre will sit on 278 hectares (686 acres). It will house a factory, laboratories, tuition blocks, studios and hostels.
The five-storey office block shall be fitted with a lift for ease of movement for persons living with disabilities and a breastfeeding room.
“Upon completion, the facility will enrol up to 5,000 students annually from Kenya and beyond,” Nyang’or added.
He said Kisumu Polytechnic is reviewing the curriculum to ensure that programmes offered at the institution fit the work environment.
"The review will focus on developing industry-driven programmes to equip learners with the requisite skills to work effectively in the competitive textile, fashion and design industry," he said.

This will save time and resources spent on retraining workers, Nyang’or said.
He said their goal is to have all their students secure employment within six months after graduating.
Training modules at the institution will require students to spend 60 per cent of their study time working at the factory to acquire skills.
Nyang’or said over 30,000 farmers have been engaged and advised to plant Bt cotton, which is highly productive and profitable.
He said the project will provide direct employment opportunities to over 500 individuals and 2,500 indirectly working at the factory, the institute and the cotton value chain.

KAA To Upgrade Kisumu International Airport

DSC_4382-1200x630.jpg

KNA March 5, 2021 Counties, Editor's Pick, Kisumu0
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is set to upgrade Kisumu International Airport to improve customer experience and reposition the facility as a regional aviation hub.
The Sh1.2 billion upgrade will see the passenger tower building expanded to handle one million passengers per year up from the current 500, 000.
KAA Business Development Manager Jimmy Kebati said the pavement and taxi apron will be extended to the old airport to create space for setting up a cargo unit at the facility.
This, he said will enhance the capacity of the airport which serves the entire western region to attract direct international flights.
He disclosed that Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways have already expressed interest in flying direct to Kisumu International Airport adding that once the expansion is complete more airlines will come on board.
The expansion, he disclosed, is expected to be completed by April next year ahead of the Afri-Cities Conference slated for April 26 to 30, 2022 in Kisumu.
KAA, he said, has already leased land to a private developer to set up a cargo-handling unit at the airport to assist farmers in the area export fresh produce.
“Traditionally KAA does not build cargo facilities. What we do is lease land to private developers to put up the infrastructure which we have already done,” he said.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with county governments, Kenya Revenue Authority and players in the fresh produce export business, Kebati disclosed that the contractor working on the cargo unit is expected to break ground before April to ensure that the project is in place ahead of the official launch later in the year.
The facility, he said, will encompass a transit line, park houses, warehouses and cold rooms for storage of fresh produce before airlifting.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o said the expansion of the airport, which serves the entire western region was long overdue.
Governor Nyong’o said the airport development was key in unlocking the region’s economic potential to spur investments, create jobs and reduce poverty.
He said the agriculture sector will benefit immensely once the cargo terminal is operationalised adding that farmers from the region will now be able to transport fresh produce to other parts of the country and to the international markets.
“This region has a lot of potential in horticulture, milk, fish and meat. It is now time for our farmers to change the way they produce by moving away from subsistence farming to large scale production to tap into the new markets,” he said.
He challenged county governments from the Lake region to bolster extension services in order to scale up production ahead of the official launch of the cargo unit.
Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya (FPC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Okisegere Ojeput said the interconnectivity by road, railway and air in Kisumu presented a good opportunity for farmers to reap big from the export market.
He challenged farmers to take advantage of the new development, diversify and scale up production to keep the cargo unit busy once it is launched.
“We can only start exporting from Kisumu if farmers produce enough. This can only happen if people go back to their farms with the right seedlings,” he said.
The fresh produce sector, which earned Sh151, billion last year, he said, stands to grow further if farmers from the western region scale up production.
He added that the region has a lot of potential in fruits, french beans, sweet potatoes, avocados and flowers urging the county governments to rally farmers to scale up production.

41MW Solar power plant to be constructed in Mozambique
Solar power in Kenya is set to be boosted when a new 40MWp solar photovoltaic power plant backed with a US $0.075 per kWh feed-in tariff (FiT) is set put up in Kisumu County in the western region of Kenya by Ergon Solair Africa Ltd, a subsidiary of the American company Ergon Solair PBC.
This is after the American company was issued with an approval to carry on the development of the project by the Energy Regulatory Commission of Kenya (Epra), the authority in charge of energy regulation in the East African Country.
Speaking after receiving the approval, Lorenzo L. Colacicchi, the founder of Ergon Solair said that they are thankful that the government of Kenya has endorsed the project.
“We are certain that this project will boost numerous investments and activities, making a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the region. Moreover, it is more important at this complex moment in the world’s history to accelerate the development of solutions for a sustainable future,” he concluded.

The agreement signed between Ergon Solair Africa and Epra allows the former to build its solar power plant on a more than 100 hectares roadside land in the locality of Kibos that will boost solar power in Kenya. It also directs the project’s developer to sell the electricity generated by the facility to the state-owned Kenya Power & Lighting Company (KPLC) under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The project has been on the cards for the last seven years and according to Ergon Solair Africa, the plant will be commissioned in the last quarter of 2023. Within the first year of operation, the plant is expected to have the capacity to produce approximately 105.3 MWh of electricity. It will be connected to the National grid through a 220 kV substation within its proximity.
