KISWAHILI will soon be an official language in the Great Lakes region after the proposal was overwhelmingly endorsed by the ministers for foreign affairs who met in Lusaka on last Saturday.

The minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation, Bernard Membe, has said that Tanzania will take immediate measures to open centres for teaching Kiswahili in all its embassies in the region.

He said,Tanzania was in a better position to spearhead this effort, given its historical background as the first Kiswahili speaking counry in the region.

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region(ICGLR) has recomended the introduction of Kiswahili amog the member states as a way of promoting the usage of the language in the region, he said.

He further said that his ministry will collaborate with the ministry of culture to open up Kiswahili centres in all embassies in the Great Lakes region.

He said that the two ministries will work together to ensure that the quality of teaching the language is in place.

He called on other member countries to formally and progressivelly start introducing it in schools to hasten and catch up with those ahead in the language.

Congo already speak Swahili, we don't need any lessons.

Western Congo knows more Lingala than Swahili. And one can argue the Swahili spoken in eastern Congo is not fasaha.
