Health Benefits and Uses

Garlic's health benefits and medicinal properties have long been known (1). Garlic has long been considered a herbal "wonder drug", with a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague! It has been used extensively in herbal medicine (phytotherapy, sometimes spelt phitotherapy). Raw garlic is used by some to treat the symptoms of acne and there is some evidence that it can assist in managing high cholesterol levels. It can even be effective as a natural mosquito repellent.

In general, a stronger tasting clove of garlic has more sulphur content and hence more medicinal value it's likely to have. Some people have suggested that organically grown garlic tends towards a higher sulphur level and hence greater benefit to health. In my experience it certainly tastes better so I buy organic whenever possible whether or not it's best for my health.
Some people prefer to take garlic supplements. These pills and capsules have the advantage of avoiding garlic breath.
Modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. The body does not appear to build up resistance to the garlic, so its positive health benefits continue over time.
Healthy Antioxidant

Studies (2) have shown that garlic - especially aged garlic - can have a powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidants can help to protect the body against damaging "free radicals".

Side-Effects

Raw garlic is very strong, so eating too much could produce problems, for example irritation of or even damage to the digestive tract.

There are a few people who are allergic to garlic. Symptoms of garlic allergy include skin rash, temperature and headaches. Also, garlic could potentially disrupt anti-coagulants, so it's best avoided before surgery. As with any medicine, always check with your doctor first and tell your doctor if you are using it.
Important: Research published in 2001 concluded that garlic supplements "can cause a potentially harmful side effect when combined with a type of medication used to treat HIV/AIDS". More details are available on the NIAID website.
See also the warnings page on this site.
Medicinal Ingredients of Garlic

There are two main medical ingredients which produce the garlic health benefits: allicin and diallyl sulphides. I've given each of these a page of their own:

Also a page on the chemistry of allicin.

Garlic makes a wonderful health supplement but the garlic cure is no substitute for the basics: sensible eating and appropriate exercise. Garlic should be seen as part of a healthy lifestyle - not as an alternative to it. Always consult your doctor first regarding any medical condition.

Health benefits associated with using garlic

The Panacea of the Kitchen
When you mention garlic in most social situations, you'll get responses ranging from 'I love it' to 'it makes my breath stinky'. Historically, garlic was used for everything from worthy offering to the gods and goddesses, to arousing sexual interests, and most recently, to healing virtually any affliction a human being could develop.

The Egyptians were true supporters of the 'stinking rose'. It has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 3200 BC, such as in Tutankahman's to help him on his journey to the afterlife as offerings to gods. They created statues of garlic, used it medicinally, in embalming concoctions, and even fed it to their pyramid builders to give them strength and health (news flash: mystery of how the pyramids could have been built by common man has been solved).
Following the lead of the Egyptians, Romans explored the usefulness of garlic as well. They too fed garlic to their soldiers and athletes for strength and health. A recipe was found documenting using garlic for 'curing hangovers' that listed using 16 bulbs (not cloves) of crushed garlic boiled with a bucket of wine, and then drank. The remedy most likely deterred most from wanting to drink in the first place. They also used garlic for offerings to the goddess Hecate, curing leprosy, and as a scorpion repellent. In similar purposes, Transylvanians used garlic as an insect repellent for mosquitoes, which may lend credence to the legend of vampires being warded off by garlic.

In the time of the Black Plague, garlic was a key ingredient in a concoction that was, and presently, known as 'Four Thieves'. There are numerous web sites with variations of this powerful remedy's origins and the possible ingredients. Even today, it is still regarded as an important tonic to ward off viruses. In similar use as an anti-viral agent, trials have been run to test Garlic's medicinal value with viral diseases such as AIDS with promising results.
In ancient times it was regarded quite highly in most cultures as a medicinal plant and for culinary purposes. Ancient medical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Navanitaka (a.k.a. The Bower Manuscripts) reported on its healing abilities.
In more recent history, Louis Pasteur, creator of the process of pasteurizing, documented that garlic kills bacteria with raw juice as effective as 60 milligrams of penicillin.
These last few historical points are obscure and I was unable to cross-reference them but found them interesting

Garlic is one of the most commonly used herbs used in cooking and can be use to flavor many different dishes. This pungent herb also has many health benefits to our body.
Nutritional Content
Garlic is a good source of manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, selenium, calcium, phosphorus, thiamin, copper, and protein. One once or 28 grams, has around forty two calories.

Benefits to the Body
Garlic has a very pungent odor caused by sulfur compounds. Which are responsible for much of the herbs health benefits. Regular garlic consumption can help to lower blood pressure. This herb can help to stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the lining of blood vessels and relax them which can aid in the prevention of heart disease. Garlic also helps promote better blood flow in the body and eliminate free radicals which destroy cells in the body. Vitamin C, manganese, vitamin B6 and selenium present in this herb can also help with the elimination of free radicals. The selenium in the herb can also aid in the prevention of heart disease.
Garlic also contains anti-inflammatory compounds which can help to ease some conditions like arthritis. One of the sulfur compounds in garlic is very good at killing bacteria associated with colds, flu, and other viruses. It can also help to prevent more serious bacterial infections. Garlic may also be a potent cancer fighter. Eating a diet rich in garlic may help to lower the risks of many types of cancers. Studies have shown that garlic provides a significant lower risk for developing cancer in patients who eat garlic on a regular basis.
Garlic is a very potent antibiotic and is even beneficial against drug-resistant strains of bacteria. Cooking with garlic can help lower the carcinogens found in meat during grilling when the meat is exposed to higher temperatures.
Other Information
Garlic is one of the world's oldest cultivated plants and is native to Asia. Garlic is found in a bulb-like form with many cloves attached to the bulb. The skin of the cloves is removed prior to consumption. Garlic is cultivated in many areas of the world today.
Garlic should be purchased fresh for the most health benefits. It can be found in powders, salts, pastes and pickled. Fresh garlic will provide the most flavor enhancements to food. Store garlic away from sunlight and direct exposure to heat. Garlic that has begun to sprout will not be as fresh but can still be consumed.
To quickly remove the skin on this herb, place it on the counter and tap it with a knife or push down on it with your palm which will help to remove the skin from the clove. Cut up the garlic when ready to use and let it sit for several minutes. This will activate compounds in the herb which increases its health benefits.
Garlic can make many meals more flavorful. Add garlic to pasta, meat, salad, and sauces. Including garlic in your daily diet can help to promote better health for you and your family.

nonetheless: people hung braided cloves of garlic on doors to ward of infection of the black plague, used for dental purposes to remove plaque from teeth and to make loose teeth take root again, and applied to the noses of hysterical girls to calm them. In Ayruvedic practices, garlic contains 5 of the 6 rasas (tastes), and use juice for sinus problems. In the similar healing modality of Unani, garlic had many uses. It was used by inhaling a powder form to regulate menstruation, for paralysis, forgetfulness, tremors, colic pains, internal ulcers, and for fevers. On a lighter note, in areas such as India, garlic has been reported to be an excellent aphrodisiac. Apparently there is some truth to this as it was forbidden for monks and widowed women to consume so as not to be led into temptation.

Our current medicinal knowledge actually supports some of these ancient uses. Garlic is widely known as a cardiac agent, removing plaque from the vascular system which promotes a myriad of health benefits such as the following: lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, keeps blood from clotting, prevents platelets from clumping together. By removing the plaque, it has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL (it can lower a LDL over 200 by 15%). It helps with production of glutathione, important for cellular health. As an anti-inflammatory and increasing blood flow it can improve conditions such as glaucoma, rheumatism, liver disorders, and removes heavy metal from your system (not the head-banging kind... the kind that can lead to cancer and other unpleasant health conditions). Garlic's ability to increase blood flow may explain its ability to support health and strength in the ancient Egyptians while they labored in the hot desert to build the most impressive buildings made without modern construction equipment and why it was considered an aphrodisiac.
In East Asia and the Middle East, garlic is used for tuberculosis, diabetes, rheumatism, colic, dysentery, liver disorders, facial paralysis, high blood pressure, and bronchitis.
Western acknowledgements have been made contesting to garlic's use with cancer, tumors, blood conditions, fungal infections, bacterial infections (remember, raw garlic juice is equal to 60 milligrams of penicillin), as an antiviral agent, and is used globally for intestinal parasites. I recently used a basic oil made from raw garlic .

Garlic, The Natural Antibiotic87

The time for sickness is here. The pharmacies are packed, and the doctors are full. As you begin to calculate the costs of doctor visits and prescriptions you wonder, "Is there a better way?"

I too found myself racking up hundreds of dollars in medical bills, treating recurrent infections, and spending a lot of money on antibiotics. Finally, I found a way to treat myself and to better my health in general.

I had heard that garlic was nature's antibiotic, but like anyone else, I was skeptical at first; until I got a urinary tract infection and couldn't afford another doctor bill. I went to my local pharmacy, paid about five bucks for a bottle of garlic, and downed it like candy.

I was amazed at the results. In approximately twenty-four hours, I was totally pain free. From then on I was hooked. I have used it several times since to treat various infections and sicknesses, and it is even safe to give to my children.

What is it about garlic that causes it to bring about these great benefits? Well, when a garlic bulb is crushed, it produces allicin. Allicin is a natural antibiotic and anti-fungal.

This is the substance that fights against sickness, infections, and fungus.
When allicin is produced by crushing the garlic bulb, its effectiveness immediately begins to deteriorate. Cooked garlic provides little or no medicinal value. This is why that you must use fresh garlic immediately and in the raw form in order to benefit.

Garlic.jpg
134674_f260.jpg

Now, many supplement manufacturers have found a way to process the garlic and still retain the allicin, thus preserving its medicinal benefits. This is obviously the way to go if you want to get to the root of a problem fast (and you don't want bad breath).

Start by taking several capsules a day and increase the amount if you don't get the relief you need. I have taken as many as 30 or more softgels a day when I was desperate. I'm

not saying that I necessarily advise taking this many, this is just what I have done. And buddy, it took care of it. It may be a good idea to keep taking the garlic for a few days even after the pain is gone, just to make sure that the bacteria is out of your system.

IMPORTANT: After taking garlic, or any antibiotic for that matter, it is very important to take a probiotic formula to replenish the friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract. Antibiotics unfortunately don't just go after the "bad guys." They are there to kill bacteria, whether

it's good or bad. Since some bacteria is necessary, such as acidophilus and it's relatives, it's up to you to replenish this friendly flora so you won't run into problems later. If this is ignored, you will likely get candida (yeast) overgrowth. This will result in yeast infections

and other health problems which you will need an antibiotic. And thus, the vicious cycle begins. This is why many adults and children alike run to the doctor over and over fighting the same old problems. This frustrating cycle could have been eliminated if only probiotics were taken after the antibiotics. Too often, doctors never tell this to their patients so the population for the most part remains uninformed.

Not only is garlic excellent as an antibiotic, but it has a host of other benefits as well. It's very beneficial to the cardiovascular system and is a great system cleanser. Studies have shown the benefits of garlic when dealing with blood pressure problems, and high

triglycerides. Garlic has even been used in the treatment and prevention of cancer.
So what do we have to lose? Stock up on this powerful wonder supplement/food and live healthier today!
Don't forget to get the probiotics too!
