Will someone give me the reason why Kibaki snubs Anaan despite latter express wish to meet the two principals. Yours curiosity.

Goings on Kenya despite brand new constituion inatia mashaka kuhusu hatma ya taifa. In final analysis a country is democratic sio kwa sababu ya katiba tu but because its people are democratic. Do we lack a democratic tradition?

When you talk of Kenyans, never forget those still living in Kibera and other pathetic places and just talk of those having luxury in Nairobi hotels. All are kenyans.

I thought he was away in Uganda. Did he refuse to meet Anaan? Why?

It is funny you are probably mentioning Kibera because a huge number of your tribe live there. What about the other slums like Dandora/korogocho, mukuru where other populations are living...

...The other problem is the real underlying issue is not being addressed that is poverty. The group you have metioned are susceptible to getting handouts and alchohol to go and create trouble.

Uhuru tells 'foreigners' to keep off polls

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has told foreigners to stop meddling in the country's affairs and especially the upcoming general elections.

In a riposte to remarks by former chief mediator Kofi Annan that his presidential candidature would sour relations between Kenya and other countries, Mr Kenyatta said it was up to Kenyans to make that decision.

Mr Kenyatta said foreigners should desist telling Kenyans who they should or should not elect.

He said he is seeking the presidency to oversee the development of Kenya, East African Community and Africa.

"My focus is on Kenya, the region and the continent. No Kenyan or African has said that Uhuru should not vie for the presidency so the rest if they don't want to associate with us they can stay away," Mr Kenyatta said.

He made the remarks at the TNA aspirants conference in Kasarani, Nairobi where the party adopted its nomination rules ahead of next week's deadline set by the election commission.

Mr Kenyatta added that while the intervention of foreign countries after the 2007 post-election violence was appreciated, the country has since matured and learnt its lesson.

"We welcome them to continue visiting Kenya because tourists help our economy grow. But I am not looking to be president in UK or US. I am democratically seeking the presidency of Kenya. I am not forcing anyone to vote for me," Mr Kenyatta said.
On Thursday, Mr Annan warned that Kenya's relations with the international community could be adversely affected if Mr Kenyatta or Eldoret North MP William Ruto, who are facing charges at the international court, win the presidency.

The stage for Mr Kenyatta's remarks was set by TNA officials Johnson Sakaja and Onyango Oloo and assistant minister Cecily Mbarire. The three argued that foreign governments want to influence the country's judiciary to block certain candidates from contesting the presidency.

"We take exception to secret meetings being held by foreigners with various institutions especially the Judiciary. We will not allow a group of people seated in a room to decide who will be the president of Kenya," Mr Onyango said.

"The leadership will not be found in the courts, in boardrooms or Washington. The leadership Kenyans want will be found in this country and decided by its people," added Mr Sakaja.

Ms Mbarire said that Kenyans were tired of being told who to elect or who not too.

"There are people who are out there who are bent to ensure that your (Mr Kenyatta) name is not on the ballot. That decision will not be made by some three people in a room but the people of Kenya," Ms Mbarire said.

Gachoka MP Reverend Mutava Musyimi at the same time withdrew his candidature for the presidency and said that he would support Mr Kenyatta.

Rev Musyimi joined TNA last month and had declared his interest for the party's presidential ticket.

"I am standing down for Mr Kenyatta and will support him to be Kenya's fourth President. I offer this support with no conditions. I am urging all my supporters to support TNA and Mr Kenyatta because he represents the ideals of all Kenyans who are seeking development for the country," Mr Musyimi said.

Mr Kenyatta welcomed Mr Musyimi's support and assuredaspirants that they will be treated equally with the founding members of the party
Mr Kenyatta also warned aspirants against jumping ship if they fail to get the TNA ticket during the nominations set for December 10.

"He (Mr Musyimi) has shown us today that leadership is not individuality but of people must work together to deliver the aspirations of Kenyans. Politics is not about friendship but going out to ask for votes from the public. I urge you to go seek votes because Uhuru will have no say in who people will nominate. I ask you for your votes and those of your supporters," Mr Kenyatta said.

State House claims Annan failed to book appointment

President Kibaki did not deliberately snub Dr Kofi Annan, State House claims the former United Nations head failed to secure an appointment.

The clarification came amid speculation that the President was unhappy with criticism leveled at him in Annan's recently published memoir, titled Interventions: A Life In War And Peace. The book includes a chapter on the 2008 crisis Annan helped resolve that paints Kibaki in unflattering light.

Remarks by the former UN boss about two presidential aspirants with cases at The Hague also drew fire from one of them, who accused the Ghanaian of undermining his bid. On Thursday, Annan warned that Kenya's ties with the international community might be strained if Uhuru or Eldoret North MP William Ruto were president. The two face trial at the International Criminal Court in April next year over crimes against humanity committed in 2007.

Head of the Presidential Press Service Isaiah Kabira says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs failed to "firm up" a tentatively scheduled appointment for Annan and former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa to meet the president. Efforts to fit in a meeting at the last minute failed due to the president's busy schedule. Dr Annan ended his three-day visit to support preparations for next year's General Election on Thursday.

The clarification came as TNA leader Uhuru Kenyatta attacked the former mediator for allegedly undermining his presidential bid. Uhuru said Annan has no authority to determine who should vie for elective office in Kenya.

"There were some tourists here in the country," Uhuru said, in a veiled reference to Annan and Mkapa. "We like tourists but it's not for everybody who has nowhere else to go to come to Kenya and purport to speak on behalf of the people of Kenya. We learnt our lessons (from the 2007 crisis) and we have a new Constitution."

Uhuru added that no African country has opposed his presidential bid. "I am not asking to be elected president of the United States or Germany," he said. "I want to contest for the presidency of Kenya. If some people feel they don't want to work with me, so be it. There are many friends across the globe (I can work with). As long as Africa is fine, that's all. I have not heard any of our neighbours raise concerns about my candidature."

Kibaki's indifference

Dr Annan's memoir, released in September, includes a chapter that criticises President Kibaki's apparent indifference and rigidity during the 2007 crisis. ODM leader Raila Odinga is slammed for exhibiting a lack of urgency in addressing the crisis.

In the book, written by Nader Mousavizadeh, Annan reveals several behind-the-scenes incidents previously kept secret. He claims Kibaki invited Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to Kenya to scuttle plans to begin negotiations. Museveni arrived in the country unexpectedly on the same day members of the so-called Panel of Eminent African Personalities officially began their mission on January 22. "PNU was against any internationalisation of the election dispute," Annan says in his memoir. "They held power and did not want to change the status quo. So they were trying to bring in a negotiator who would dance to their tune." Museveni called on the chief negotiator at the Serena Hotel moments after he arrived and quickly told Annan he had an answer to Kenya's mess. He said both the Government and ODM were willing to work with the plan.

"It was based on ODM's first accepting the results of the elections," Annan recalls. "(Museveni) then asked me to come to State House, the residence of the President, to meet and discuss the plan. I had seen too many ploys in my career to be caught by this. It seemed to me that Museveni and Kibaki fancied a scheme that demanded that all accept the election result, and to publicly spin my visit as endorsement of this plan. I made my excuses that I still had to call all the parties before I could make any visits. When I called (Raila) Odinga, my suspicions were confirmed," he says. The ODM leader flatly rejected Museveni as a mediator, claiming he was biased toward Kibaki. Further they had not been consulted on the matter. The Museveni initiative accordingly ended there, and he left two days later.

These and other revelations were made public only last month ahead of the visit to assess Kenya's preparedness ahead of next year's General Elections. Annan and Mkapa met with the Prime Minister and the Speaker of National Assembly but failed to secure an audience with the President. Some have speculated that State House may have been irked by the potrayal of the President in Annan's book. PPS boss Kabira denies this.

WHY KIBAKI SNUBBED KOFI ANNAN

PRESIDENT Kibaki's confidants advised him not to meet Kofi Annan this week in Nairobi because they claim he is biased.

On Thursday the former United Nations Secretary General warned that electing either Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta or Eldoret North MP William Ruto as president would complicate Kenya's foreign relations.

Annan has been in Nairobi this week with former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa to assess Kenya's preparedness for elections in 2013. Annan was the chief mediator in 2008 in the negotiations after the post-election violence that led to the establishment of the coalition government.

Five senior Kibaki confidants privately told the organisers of Annan's visit that there was no reason for Kibaki to meet Annan "since his mission ended four years ago".

"The general feeling around the PNU side of the coalition was that Annan had overstayed his welcome to Kenya. Each time he came he seemed to be closer and more comfortable with Raila's side of the coalition. He also has been behaving like Kenya's prefect," said one adviser.

"In any case, he wanted to know how government was preparing for elections. The Prime Minister is the coordinator of all ministries and we believe he must have briefed Annan on the progress so far. So we asked the President to concentrate on other important national issues," said the official in the Office of the President.

Speaking as he left on Thursday afternoon, Annan said he and Mkapa had expected to meet Kibaki when they arrived on Monday. Initially they were told that Kibaki was unavailable because he had gone to Uganda for the 50 years of independence celebrations. They had then expected to meet him on Thursday but they received no word from State House.

Presidential Press Services boss Isaiah Kabira told the Nation that the Head of State had a busy day on Thursday chairing a Cabinet meeting that had to approve 14 bills.

On Wednesday met Prime Minister Raila Odinga, commission chairmen, and civil society leaders to discuss among other things the upcoming elections.

Kibaki's advisers were also unhappy that Annan had refused to meet Uhuru yet he met Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi who are both campaigning for the presidency.

"Why was Uhuru left out of the itinerary yet he is a serious presidential candidate? Why did Annan meet Raila, Mudavadi and Eugene only and not Ruto, Uhuru and other presidential aspirants? We can only conclude that there are people he favours," said assistant Agriculture minister Kareke Mbiuki, an ally of Uhuru.

Yesterday Uhuru told TNA aspirants gathering at Kasarani that foreigners should not meddle in the Kenyan elections. He said he would accept the voter's verdict.

His comments were echoed by political consultant Tony Gachoka who has worked with Uhuru in the pasty. "The judiciary under foreign directives cannot block Uhuru and Ruto from running for office. Let the people decide," said Gachoka.

"Uongozi mwema (good leadership) can only come though universal suffrage and not through a court bench of three sitting in judgement on leadership and usurping the will of the Kenyan people," said Gachoka.

The presidential advisers also privately accuse Mutunga of "meeting and entertaining foreigners who want Uhuru and Ruto barred from contesting the presidency".

Mutunga met Annan this week and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in July. Both leaders praised the ongoing reforms in the judiciary. Kibaki's advisers have become increasingly uncomfortable with the pronouncements being made by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

This week Mutunga said that Kenyans should review the Matemu and Baraza rulings if they wanted to know who would pass the integrity test.

Mutunga was referring to the recent High Court decisions in August and September that nullified the appointment of Mumo Matemu as the chair of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the decision of the tribunal recommending the removal of Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza.

Mutunga's comments indicate that the courts may take a tough line in the case challenging the integrity of Ruto and Uhuru. The ruling is expected later this month and will determine whether they will be eligible to contest in the presidential election in March.
