Abdelaziz A. Sachedina (b. 1942)Sachedina was born in Tanzania, into a family of Indian Muslim immigrants. He holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in Islamic Studies from Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh state, India, and the other in Persian language and literature from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, in Iran. While living in Mashhad, he also studied Islamic jurisprudence at the Ayatollah Milani Madrasa there. He received his PhD in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Toronto. Although he was born Shi’a, Sachedina has served as an imam for Sunni congregations.

His recent scholarly work has focused on the effort to reconcile Western and Islamic ideals of human rights and democracy. As a result, a fatwa was issued against him in 1998 by Iraqi Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, which forbade him to lecture or teach on the subject of Islam.

In spite of this threat, he has continued to lecture and publish widely, and has worked as a consultant for the Department of Defense, in which capacity he was involved in drafting the 2005 Iraqi constitution. Sachedina, who is the author of numerous scholarly works and speaks 10 languages, has taught since 1975 at the University of Virginia, where he is currently the Frances Myers Ball Professor of Religious Studies.
