ZANZIBAR NA LAMU ZINAVYOFANANA
Picha hiyo ya punda kabeba mizigo ni kwa hisani ya Abuu Shani.
Picha hii nimeipenda na imenikumbusha mara hyangu ya kwanza kufika Lamu mwaka wa 2007.

Nilikwenda kwenye Maulid ambayo ni katika kalenda muhimu kwa Waislam wa Afrika ya Mashariki.

Nimewaambia rafiki mara nyingi kuwa msife ila iwe mmehudhuria Maulid ya Lamu hata kwa mara moja katika maisha yako.

Niliandika makala kuhusu Maulid ya Lamu na ilichapwa katika The East African (Nairobi).

Naweka hapo chini kipande kidogo kutoka makala hiyo kuhusu punda:

''There in Lamu Island at the harbour the cargo has to be transported by donkeys and carts through very narrow streets full of corners and turns to Riadha Mosque.

It is a tedious job which demands stamina, patience and resilience. There is only one main ‘road’ in Lamu and it leads from the residence of the District Commissioner to his office.

This is the path taken by the official vehicle of the DC.

Motor vehicles are practically non-existing in Lamu.

The only means of transport are donkeys and this gives the island a picturesque view and peculiar atmosphere.

The island’s main square called the Fort which is the centre of the town’s commercial activity is always full of people throughout the day.

During Maulid it a place where one should be. Standing there one is able to see people from different places in East Africa and beyond who have travelled to the island to take part in the MaulId.

It is like standing at Piccadilly Circus in London during summer.

The care taker of the Fort has to quarrel with donkey owners for ‘parking’ their donkeys in the square.

He does not complain about wrong parking.
He only complains about donkeys leaving behind their stools.

He has put up a threatening notice to all donkey ‘drivers’ that he will in future have to detain those donkeys who litter the square and have their ‘drivers’ charged under by laws of the island.''

Waarabu wanaotumia punda kwa nguvu kazi ni Wamasri (Egyptians).

Kuwa na punda au kitokuwanae na matumizi yake si mila.
Kuwa na asili na kitu au kukosa ni karibu sawa na mila. Mfano, wapemba wengi sio wafugaji kwa vile kiasili hawafugi ng'ombe. Tafauti na mfano, watu wa kanda ya Ziwa, kila wanapokwenda hata hapa mjini Dar tu utawaona wanafuga ng'ombe, hata ikiwa anaishi kwenye mjumba wa ghorofa bado harufu ya ng'ombe utaisikia.

Jamaa kakuuliza hapo Lamu mila zao ni za kiarabu kiarabu ukambishia unasema ni za waswahili. Mi nimekuambia ukiwa Lamu Mombasa Zanzibar na Muscat Oman kuna tofauti gan ya life style maana hao wote wametawaliwa na muoman. So jamaa yupo sahihi. Ndio maana nikakuuliza waswahili unaozungumzia ni hao mijikenda au

Mi najua unapenda kuandika uongo kwa wasiojua na akipatikana anaejua akikuchalenji unatafuta kisingizio cha kukimbia hoja. Bado mi nakuambia maisha ya Mombasa hasa stone Town Zanzibar na lamu hayana tofauti na ya pale Muscat Oman. Ni maisha ya kiarabu arabu. Sio ya kiswahili wagiriama wenzetu au wagunya au mijikenda.
