LAPSSET: Lamu Port and South Sudan Ethiopia Transport: News & Photos

Hii barabara ya Isiolo to Lokichar (Turkana) haipo na ni all weather road na inaelekea South Sudan. Kisha barabara kutoka Turkana hadi South Sudan inajengwa sasa hivi.
Aisee mna ubabaishaji ndo maana Uganda wakakataa kupitisha bomba Kenya! JPM ka-revamp MGR from Tanga to Arusha then from Tanga to Dar to allow travelling from Ruvu onwards to Mwanza na ameanza dredging access to Tanga port. Nyie mpo tu!

Sasa all those +8 years mlikuwa mnafanya nini watu wa chapchap? DMGP project for expansion of 1-8 berths at Dar port is almost done and started in 2017!
Kuna siku, zamani kidogo, nadhani ilikuwa last year, tuliargue hapa, mimi na wewe kuhusu dimensions za Lamu port.

Wacha kujitetea umeona Dar port expansion? Imeanza 2017 na so far 1-8 berths r almost ready! Labda uniambie ubabaishaji kwenye financing the Lamu project ila si ati the project is too big! Hilo nakataa 8 years r too many!

What if mngekuwa na pilikapilika za miradi kama Tanzania?

Naona speed yenu iko juu kutushinda. Lamu port nadhani ilidelay kwenye kutafuta mkandarasi na other govt bureaucracies. Sielewi mbona feasibility studies ilikamilika 2011 ila mkandarasi alishinda tender 2014.

Hata Uhuru hayuko serious on budget allocation for Lamu port he hasn't done that consistently!

Hata Uhuru hayuko serious on budget allocation he didn't do that consistently!
Yes. It was not his project, it was Kibaki's project. So he didn't really care about it but I thank him for not scrapping it. Tukichagua rais ambaye hataki kujenga barabara wala airport wala port basi sisi tumekwisha.

Nimeskia "tentatively" we will build a bus park at Lokichar! Be worried over that tentatively word!

Those projects are under Kenya's Vision 2030, it doesn't matter who is the president they r ur country blueprint projects. Uhuru ought to be more serious, so far in all this plus eight years he has released less than $250mln that means less than $30 mln per year!

See what JPM has done during his first term! In the 2018/2019 budget $1.1 bln was set aside for seaports expansion that's aside $500-800 mln he has been setting aside for SGR construction since 2016/2017 budget!

Expansion of Tanga port to improve service delivery
THE Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has said the rehabilitation and expansion of Tanga port will apart from improving service delivery enable the business community in northern regions to enjoy low cost transportation services.

TPA.jpg

Improvement of the port, according to TPA Director General, Eng Deusdedit Kakoko will reduce the cost of doing business for traders in Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Manyara and Tanga regions as well as those from neigbouring countries.

Tanga port has also been earmarked for Ugandan petroleum product importers and other cargo going to Kampala through Tanzania. Upon completion, the port will be able to handle large ships, save time and ultimately double government revenue collections.

The port is now under expansion to increase berths and its depth from the current 3.5 metres to 15 metres. Dredging will increase the port’s handling capacity to one million tonnes per year.

“Traders and shipping agents from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Manyara regions will use the port at affordable costs,” he said.
Eng Kakoko added that construction of a dry dock in Arusha Region is an important development which supports the operation of the Tanga port since it will help in reducing cargo congestion.

The TPA boss noted that previously some 200,000 tonnes of cargo were entering the country through other ports outside the country, but the number has now been reduced to 100,000 tonnes only.

“These on-going efforts to rehabilitate and expand most of the ports are meant to ensure that all the cargo entering Tanzania passes through our ports,” said Eng Kakoko.

He said the port improvement initiatives across the country have resulted in increased cargo to 2.5 million consignments. He said the increase in consignments has increased government revenues from 603bn/- in the 2016/2017 financial year to 951bn/- in the fiscal year 2019/2020.

Of all the 17.2 million tonnes, 11 million tonnes were cargo destined for Tanzania while six million tonnes were transit cargo going to neighbouring regions.

TPA is also working to improve infrastructure further inland. In late July it announced plans to build a dry port in the country’s western Kigoma Region.

Located at Lake Tanganyika, the facility will serve the Great Lakes region, including Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia, and will be linked to the port of Dar es Salaam by the standard-gauge railway.

MY TAKE
Unfortunately, the prospect of all these is in danger now with the just concluded election!

Well i read the article but guess what ur authorities r still doing lottery, relying on Tanzanian market for transhipment is another fumble considering the fact Dar has had expansion of her berths plus serious dredging as we speak some of the berths have depth of above 16 m and the plan is to have all berths 1-8 be accessed by Post Panamax ships. BTW at the moment Dar port is serving over 17mln tons of cargo and from next year a second phase expansion from Kigamboni oil jet terminal side will kickstart for berths from 9-14. Aside Dar port, Tanga and Mtwara ports r parallel being expanded n dredged too! Mtwara port will be completed end of this year, so i don't see Kenya's plan working!

U have Maersk but Hutchson ports too r managing TICTS at Dar port aside Maersk presence. U have to know that Tanga port expansion plan is one of the major reasons that made Uganda choose Tanga as a route for her pipeline and JPM has demonstrated as a man of his words by allocating funds for expansion ever since. Uganda having been given the whole Chongoleani to build their oil terminal for those mega oil tankers to dock, should be a vivid sign to alert Kenya that Tanzania is not a market should to be counted on as a transhipment market for Lamu port.

I find Kenya had immense chances to make their goals a reality, if the country showed seriousness on meeting her obligations towards LAPSSET but having failed to invest enough (less than 250 mln) at Lamu port project in the past 8 years made u lose that golden opportunity of "first come first served" around the region. As a matter of fact, I don't even see South Sudan building a pipeline to Lamu, instead i see a big chance for South Sudan oil field to be connected with those in Hoima esp. being aware of the fact that Total has oil fields in South Sudan.

Sorry buddy lets be pragmatic on this, the prospects r very slim on Kenya and if at all the superpowers r to turn a blind eye on this years' election. U will be on receiving end knowing the fact JPM is even more serious to complete his SGR to Mwanza and major ports on Lake Tanganyika projects he has already started than his peer Uhuru. BTW can't u see after conclusion of HGA deals with Uganda and Tanzania Total is now farming out of Lokichar oil field? And why r doing regional projects without involving regional partners? Don't u see u have a problem over there? See DP World came later own but they made sure Ethiopia commit a 17% stake in their Berbera port project before construction started. Having invested in DP World project, do u think Ethiopia will disband Berbera port for Lamu?

Recent launch of TPA office in Bujumbura after DRC and Rwanda, Malawi is next!

You have made good points. However, Lamu port is almost complete. It is too late to turn back now. We will complete the port. Kenya will find a way to make it work. Although I agree with you that right now the transshipment to Tanzania will not work because you guyz are expanding your ports and the relationship between these two countries is not good. We will find a way. Even for SGR, people were saying it will not be used but now most transporters are using it. So it will be used somehow.

Develop Northern Kenya n let ur government invest more on EPZ n Isiolo city overthere at least $500 mln for every budget! And value for money should be the main focus things like shoddy work at Isiolo Airport's runway should be avoided at every cost.

I agree. I was thinking the same thing. That whole Northern Corridor needs to be developed. We have millions of cows in that area. We can set up meat processing plants there. Isiolo resort city should have started been constructed by now but it has not yet started. If the whole of vision 2030 is implemented then the Northern region will flourish. It always saddens me to see that the whole of Northern Kenya is undeveloped. I have used the Isiolo Moyale road and that 500 km stretch is very undeveloped. We need to bring industries to these areas. There is electricity from Marsabit wind farm LTWP (300MW) upto Suswa. So Marsabit and Isiolo counties have electricity and tarmac road. This is enough to start some industries. However areas that don't have grid electricity or tarmac road like some North Eastern counties ( Mandera and Moyale) will have to wait longer until infrastructure is built for industries to come in. Isiolo has everything from water to electricity to tarmac road and it was chosen to be a resort city because it is at the centre of Kenya. If you look at the map you will see that Isiolo is at the centre of Kenya, so it will be easier to move from Isiolo to any other part of Kenya.

Natural causes are posing a threat to three major infrastructural projects in Mombasa County, putting lives at risk.

The Parliamentary Transport Committee has expressed worry over the landslide and cracks that have resulted in the damage of a section of the Dongo Kundu Bypass and the secondary runway at the Moi International Airport.

While addressing the press at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa, the Committee Chairperson, Mr David Pkosing, said that the two major infrastructure projects are under threat and that, if nothing is urgently done, the Moi Airport runway will be unviable.

“There was a serious landslide that completely closed one side of the Dongo Kundu Bypass road. This is a unique problem. The airport is also threatened; the secondary runway is endangered,” he said.

“In another five years, we might lose 25 percent of the Moi Airport runway, making it unviable. Something must be done urgently. We must allow water to go to the sea. We can’t oppose nature. Anything short of this, we will lose the airport.”

The chairman, who was on an assessment and oversight tour of the various ongoing projects in the Coast region, noted that the entire southern and western parts of the airport are seriously endangered despite the work being done on the northern side of the airport.

The bypass sits at the end of the runway and the water collected in the entire airport area sips into the ground as it makes its way to the Indian Ocean.

Mr Pkosing said that the natural flow of the water into the ocean seems to have been blocked and urged key stakeholders, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Railways, and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), to urgently salvage the situation.

“We have appealed to KeNHA, Kenya Railways and KAA to meet for multi-sectoral thinking to secure the airport runway, the Dongo Kundu bypass and the SGR. We have asked our engineers to study the water drainage system and see whether we can have piping to drain the water directly into the ocean,” he said.

In July, KeNHA closed a section of the Mombasa Southern bypass for two days, after a section of the new road infrastructure touching on Moi International Airport developed cracks.

The Miritini- Mwache-Kipevu road was closed to allow for necessary monitoring and re-engineering interventions as the authority blamed the cracks on ''a geological phenomenon'' over a wide cross-section.

Traffic is diverted to one lane

“A limited section of the cut slope along the said road and adjacent to the Moi International Airport fenceline has been observed to exhibit movement as a result of previous moisture ingress and unfavourable subsurface conditions,” read the statement from KeNHA Director-General Peter Mundinia.

A spot check by the Nation revealed that the section was still closed as traffic is diverted to one lane.

Mr Pkosing said they are looking at the possibility of raising the Dongo Kundu part of the road almost to the level of the SGR.

This comes as the KAA Managing Director, Mr Alex Gitari, says rehabilitation of airside pavements and airfield ground lighting system at Moi International Airport is at 75 percent and that the project will be complete by March 2021.

The committee said a lot of work was going on in Mombasa County as far as infrastructure is concerned.

The chairman called on the residents to be patient despite the inconveniences.

“I want to ask the residents of Mombasa to be patient as the work goes on. There will be a number of inconveniences. You will have to bear with the government projects. In the next three years, the geographical picture of Mombasa will be very different," he said.

Imagine how much money ime-cost!
