On March 31, 2021, local time, the construction of the No. 3 storage yard of the Kenya Lamu Port project was successfully completed. So far, it marked the completion of the layered and rolling construction of the rear storage yard of the Kenya Lamu Project No. 1-3.

The yard behind the pier of the No. 1-3 berths of the Ram Port project covers an area of 840,000 m2, and the amount of earthwork at the base level is 1.18 million m3. The large amount of works and many restricted factors are the outstanding features of earthwork construction.

The cross operation of earthwork construction, dredging and filling, and retaining wall construction has a greater impact, and is severely affected by the rainy season. The rainy season has a long time and heavy rainfall. It is very difficult to carry out large-scale earthwork construction. In addition, since the start of the project, there have been many adverse effects such as peripheral terrorist attacks and the lack of funds of the owner leading to the suspension of work. The project department carefully arranged, formulated work priorities and plans at different stages, adhered to both safety and production, and promoted the key routes in an orderly manner. Unfold.

The yard construction involves a lot of mechanical equipment, and it is basically old equipment. There are many equipment failures and the maintenance pressure is high. The project department has taken full advantage of the yard maintenance force, expanded local maintenance workers, planned the purchase of vulnerable parts in advance, and combined local maintenance providers and local Equipment parts suppliers and other channels have overcome difficulties and completed the arduous earthwork construction tasks. At the same time, almost all operators of earthwork and earthmoving equipment are local employees, and the proportion of localization is as high as 99%.

Since the first case of new coronary pneumonia was discovered in Kenya in March 2020, the project department established an epidemic prevention and control team for the first time, and under the leadership of the group and the company, actively stocked epidemic prevention materials, organized publicity and training for all staff. We will take measures to prevent the epidemic for all employees, organize Chinese employees to return to China in batches for vaccines, and orderly fight and prevent the epidemic, and lay a solid foundation for the development of the project.

Since September 2020, the project department has seized the favorable weather in the dry season, created conditions to fully promote the earthwork of Berths 2 and 3 and the roads in the port area, and completed the remaining base earthwork of the yard about 800,000 m3, which was completed before the rainy season this year. The earthwork construction of the yard greatly reduces the impact of the rainy season on the construction of the project, and creates favorable conditions for the subsequent construction of the yard structure and pavement.

This month, in addition to the earthwork construction of the storage yard, the project department also completed a number of other nodes. On March 22, the project department successfully completed the topping of the housing construction welfare building; on March 27, the main box culvert construction of the storage yard was completed. Completion; On March 31, the filling of the reserved area of the storage yard was completed. So far, the 14.61 million m3 dredging and filling project of the Lamm Port project was officially completed.

The main wharf of the KOT project has 4 berths and 19 piers. The berth is 770m long and can be berthed on both sides. The main concrete pouring volume is 20015.6 cubic meters. The concrete adopts the supply mode of "land mixer truck transportation, water barge + hopper transportation", and is transferred via the outbound terminal, and then transferred to the construction site using the "floating ship crane + bucket" process for pouring. The scientific organization, reasonable arrangement, and precise implementation of the project department have overcome the global impact of the new crown epidemic, harsh offshore operating conditions, and extremely tight contract schedules. After 15 months, the main concrete pouring of the terminal pier was successfully completed, which is a submarine pipeline project and The large-scale and streamlined construction of mechanical and electrical installation projects has laid a solid foundation.

The overall completion rate of the KOT project has reached 80%. Except for the concrete pouring of the main pier and abutments, the dredging works, pile foundation works, and the installation of No. 1-3 steel trestle have been completed successively, and the construction of other sub-items is in order The progress.

Lamu Port is located in Manda Bay, Lamu County, Kenya. It is part of the corridor project connecting South Sudan, Ethiopia and other landlocked countries. It is an important part of Kenya's 2030 vision. The project includes harbor basins, channel dredging and temporary cofferdams. The dredging and filling works amounted to 14.67 million cubic meters, including 665,000 cubic meters of channel rocks, 278,000 cubic meters of change rocks in the harbor basin, and 310,000 cubic meters of temporary cofferdams. The project officially started in September 2016, and the "Tianji" ship took the lead in the construction task. In December 2018, the "Sky Whale" was put into the construction of the Lamu Port project. During this period, it overcame the difficulties of complex soil in the construction area, coral reefs and sandstones in the channel, and harsh weather conditions outside the entrance to ensure the smooth completion of the project. On April 1, the "Sky Whale" had docked at the wharf and sealed its equipment compartments, ready to be dispatched back to China.

The smooth completion of the Ram Port dredging and reclamation project not only provides sufficient land conditions for the subsequent terminal project, but also lays a solid foundation for the navigation and operation of the entire port area. It is of great significance to promote local trade exchanges and stimulate regional economic development.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 26 – President Mwai Kibaki has directed all ministries with a role in the Lamu Port and Kenya’s second transport corridor to expedite implementation of the project.

President Kibaki also ordered the Minister for Finance to take the lead in mobilising resources and to set aside funds to kick start the construction of the first of the three berths of the Lamu Port, adding that the Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet should coordinate and ensure implementation of the project starts immediately.

“In this connection, ground breaking for the construction of the first berth in Lamu should be arranged soonest possible,” President Kibaki said, saying he looked forward to commissioning the first ship docking at the Lamu Port next year.

The Head of State was speaking at Kenyatta International Conference Centre on Tuesday during the Government forum on completion of the planning stage of the Lamu Port—Southern Sudan—Ethiopia transport corridor project.

President Kibaki reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the implementation of the second transport corridor project, noting that it is an economic development corridor with higher multiplier effects to the areas it will traverse and beyond.

The President welcomed private and public development partners to work with the Government in making the project successful.
Said President Kibaki: “This is a corridor that is doable in our time. Let us all give it our support, because it represents the next frontier of development for our country and region.”

The President pointed out that the project which includes the Lamu Port at Manda Bay and the transport corridor stretching from Lamu to Southern Sudan and Ethiopia will stimulate new businesses, trade, agriculture, new settlements, employment and other socio-economic activities.

“It will also act as a catalyst for productive economic activities such as fish processing in Lamu and around Lake Turkana, livestock development in North Eastern region, tourism and agricultural development in the coastal region and coal mining in Mwingi, among other activities along the corridor,” President Kibaki said.

Besides serving Kenya’s neighbors, President Kibaki said the transport corridor will go a long way in addressing the transport challenges facing the Northern and Eastern parts of the country as well as parts of the Coastal region.

In addition to improving transport and promoting development in various parts of the country, the President said the corridor, which has more than seven projects in one package, will also generate wealth and employment opportunities for Kenyans, especially the youth.

“The key components of the project include construction of the port, railway line, highway, airports, water and oil pipeline, oil refinery, resort cities and power generating projects. Through the use of labour intensive methods, these projects are expected to generate massive employment opportunities,” President Kibaki said.

Noting that the world has become increasingly competitive, President Kibaki said Kenya has to move with speed in its development agenda in order to retain its competitive edge in the region.

In this regard, the President said the country must urgently undertake infrastructural projects that will position it strategically as a regional hub for business.

He expressed optimism that with the completion of the requisite consultancy studies, the Lamu Port and the second transport corridor project which has been pending since it was first mooted 36 years ago, can now be implemented without further delay.

Said the President: “I have noted that the importance attached to the Lamu Port at Manda Bay and the Lamu-Southern Sudan – Ethiopia Transport Corridor is now shared by most stakeholders. The roadmap towards the completion of the projects involved is also now clear.”

Following Southern Sudan’s independence, President Kibaki said the corridor will provide a shorter and direct route to the sea.

Similarly, the Head of State said, Ethiopia which is landlocked will also benefit form the project as it will provide direct access to the sea through rail, road and air.

The President disclosed that the COMESA, EAC, SADC Tripartite Infrastructure Conference will be held in Nairobi in September this year and one of the projects earmarked for discussion for funding is the Lamu Corridor.

He said the interest that other countries have expressed in the Lamu corridor is testimony of the potential of the corridor to facilitate development in the country, the immediate region and even beyond.

“Indeed, it is my conviction that through regional initiatives, we can extend the corridor to Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo and even to Douala in Cameroon, among other parts of Africa. This way, we shall create a land bridge across Africa that will further promote the integration of the African continent,” President Kibaki said.

Speaking during the occasion, Prime Minister Raila Odinga echoed President Kibaki’s sentiments saying the development of Lamu Port and associated infrastructure will open up the Northern and Eastern parts of the country and spur economic activities that will improve the lives of Kenyans.

The Prime Minister observed that the port which comes with road, rail and pipeline links to Southern Sudan and Ethiopia, is a powerful tool for trade and international relations in the region.

As a critical component of the country’s Vision 2030 development blueprint, Mr Odinga said, the Lamu Port project remained the Grand Coalition Government’s most ambitious plan that will stamp the country’s mark as the transport, trade and communication hub in the East African region.

Others speakers included Transport Minister Amos Kimunya and the Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet Amb. Francis Muthaura.

In attendance were Cabinet Ministers led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, several Assistant Ministers, Members of Parliament, Permanent Secretaries from various ministries and project consultants among other invited guests.

If Bagamoyo succeeded Tanzania won't have any say on that project. Kazi yao itakuwa ni kuprovide land and then it ends there. The funding, employment, control and collecting of revenue will be done by the Chinese. Chinese will be controlling Tanzania for a minimum of 100 yrs.
