Longest ship ever to call on Dar port today
TANZANIA Ports Authority (TPA) will register another milestone today with the arrival of the longest Post Panamax vessel ever to call at the Dar es Salaam port.
The vessel with 255 metres long is expected to arrive in Dar es Salaam today and later berth at a facility operated by the Tanzania International Container Terminal (TICTS).
The vessel, Clemens Schulte, which was built last year, is a container ship registered in Singapore, with gross tonnage of 51,872 and dead weight of 65,193. Its length and breadth is 255m x 37m.
TPA acting Corporate Communications Manager, Ms Janeth Ruzangi, said the arrival of the vessel from LaemChabang port in Thailand is testimony of growing confidence of international shipping lines in the port.
“This shows the confidence on us is growing day by day due to increased efficiency in port services,” she said. TICTS Corporate Development Director, Mr Donald Talawa, the last longest vessel to call at the terminal was MSC Martina with 242 metres long in February 2015.
Clemens Schulte is expected to discharge 250 containers and load 1,300 containers during this maiden call. Dar es Salaam port is undergoing massive transformation to improve its physical infrastructural capacity and enhance operational efficiency.
Improvements at the Dar es Salaam port include implementation of Integrated Electronic Payment System (IePS) for all dues and the Integrated Security System (ISS).
The port in collaboration with other stakeholders is now operating 24/7. It is expected that Dar es Salaam port’s throughput will be increase to 18 million tonnes by 2016/2017 and 22 million tonnes by 2020.
The port serves seven landlocked countries which are the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

TEU mean 20 foot equivalent container chukua 52,000 of gross tonnage cargo divide by 22 tons that 1 TEU can carry! Actually measurement yangu ilikuwa Kwa 40 foot equivalent container whereas 1 TEU that carries 27 tons unapata over 19,000 TEUs!

About Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Program (DMGP)
The Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Program (DMGP) aims at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the Dar es Salaam Port and supporting the economic development of Tanzania and the land-linked countries. This program will increase the capacity of the Port to handle Post Panamax vessels.

Project Background
The Dar es Salaam Port (DSM Port) is a multi-purpose port with eleven berths and a number of jetties. It is the country’s principal port that handles over 90% of country’s import and export volume and is the gateway to the central and northern parts of Tanzania and to the countries of Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda.

The port includes the following facilities for handling of cargo:
  • General cargo Terminal : Berths 1-7: break bulk, RoRo and dry bulk
  • Container Terminal: Berths 8-11
  • Kurasini Oil Jetty: liquid bulk
  • Grain Terminal : dry bulk
  • The Single Point Mooring (SPM)
  • Passenger terminals: to Zanzibar and other destinations.
The DMGP is a partnership between the Government of Tanzania, the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), other public and private stakeholders, and a coalition of development partners including the Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA), the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), and the World Bank (WB) through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).

The proposed Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Program (DMGP) is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the DSM Port and support the economic development of Tanzania and the countries of the East Africa region. This program will increase the capacity of the port to 28 million tons by 2025. The ultimate goal of the DMGP therefore is the Conversion of the DAR port into a Port which works at World Class level with optimised efficiency. In physical terms that translates into a modernisation of the port to accommodate the calling and reception of larger vessels.
