They are often used in international transactions to ensure that payment will be received where the buyer and seller may not know each other and are operating in different countries. In this case the seller is exposed to a number of risks such as credit risk, and legal risk caused by the distance, differing laws and difficulty in knowing each party personally. A letter of credit provides the seller with a guarantee that they will get paid as long as certain delivery conditions have been met. For this reason the use of letters of credit has become a very important aspect of international trade
LÇ
They provide a link between local banks, intermediary banks and the recipient bank.
This is what this means you apply the LÇ through a local bank-it's like a short term loan usually may take 6-12 months duration. This LÇ will go through an intermediary bank due to reasons that the other bank has no knowledge of the client, money laundering factors etc,to some extent it's to protect unnecessary losses that my arise during big business transactions.
Then it would finally rendered to recipient bank and vice versa
There are two types of LÇ
1) Revocable
2) Irrevocable
A very useful thread. We need practical experience from anyone who's been using this as a way to make payments internationally.

Someone told me that LC can be used as a form credit, some suppliers are willing to send commodities to a buyer located abroad after being assured by the buyers bank that the buyer will pay the money after selling the particular goods.
I case the buyer receives the goods but refuses to pay for them then his bank will be liable to pay the amount owed to supplier. In return the bank will confiscate the buyer's collateral.
Tunaweza kusema unafanya biashara kwa mali kauli, pesa unalipa baada ya kuuza mzigo.
Very much appreciated malenga wetu,Bravo Eli79

Very much appreciated malenga wetu,
...Nina swali kidogo hapo. Kama mzigo umekuja tuseme bandarini, ni nani anafanya inspection na kuridhika kuwa yeah, the goods are in quality conditions and hence the bank can release money to the seller?
Haijalishi nani ame-initiate transaction.
Endapo seller ataleta mzigo ulio nje ya makubaliano na wewe buyer umeshamlipa hela unaweza kupitia benki yako kuclaim hela irudishwe based on the evidence au atume mzigo mpya au mzigo urudishwe kwa gharama ya seller au makubaliano mapya.
Eli79 anayeikagua bidhaa ni mnunuzi, akiridhika nayo anaipa taarifa bank yake iweze kurelease pesa, asiporidhika nayo anaieleza bank yake kwamba wasirelese pesa mpaka pale supplier atakapotuma bidhaa sahihi. Mind you document zakufanya order, invoice, Bill of Lading zote zinapitia bank kwenda kwa muuzaji au kwa mnunuzi.Very much appreciated malenga wetu,

Its very much cheaper kulinganisha na mkopo.
