And while Pep Guardiola has run out of superlatives to describe his talismanic winger, Ardiles still purrs about the player he hopes can inspire Argentina to World Cup
glory this summer.
"It's fantastic, wonderful - in fact it's beautiful to see him play," the 1978 World Cup winner told Revista de la Liga.
"He's so, so quick and the skill is flabbergasting. He's incredibly quick and of course he has a level of skill with the ball that at this moment is unsurpassed by anybody else in the world.
"I played with Diego Maradona
for eight years and I thought that no-body would was ever, ever going to be as good as Diego but I would say that Messi is in that category.
"Two or three years ago to compare Diego with Messi was a cardinal sin. Personally, for me, he's already there but in the perception of the people and the perception of everybody he has to do it in the World Cup."

Defending champions Barcelona, level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the table ahead of the midweek games, remain in the hunt for the Champions League too but Ardiles now wants to see Messi prove his greatness on the world stage.
"Argentina have to play in a way like Barcelona play," he said.
"They have to help him have the ball, touching the ball and giving him the opportunity when he has the ball to do whatever he wants to do. That is lethal.
"To win (the World Cup) would be the icing on the cake. This is what he will be absolutely desperate to help Argentina do.
"To see him I will pay whatever it is to see him play. Whenever he is on the pitch it is worth whatever it is worth - even when he is having a bad day he is wonderful. It is frightening to see how much more he can do.
