Sir Alex feels confident

Sir Alex Ferguson is pleased with UnitedΒ’s form going into SundayΒ’s showdown with Liverpool at Anfield, but he wonΒ’t be banking on either teamΒ’s recent performances.

This will be the United managerΒ’s 54th encounter with Liverpool since taking charge at Old Trafford in 1986, and he knows all too well that there is little logic applied to the outcome of the fixture he still describes as Β“the gameΒ” of the league calendar.

Β“The United-Liverpool fixture, as IΒ’ve said many times, is without question a massive game,Β” he said on Friday. Β“ThatΒ’s not changed in the 23 years IΒ’ve been here, this is the game.

Β“We go into the game in decent form, and there is a confidence to our play. But itΒ’s a derby game and anything can happen. Going to Anfield at any time is hard, for both teams. It wonΒ’t be any different on Sunday.Β”

United will be keen to erase the memory of last seasonΒ’s 2-1 and 4-1 defeats at the hands of Rafael BenitezΒ’s side, but Sir Alex rejects the notion that his side have a point to prove.

Β“I donΒ’t think thatΒ’s the case at all,Β” he said. Β“Games are shaped by different circumstances. You canΒ’t look at last season as a barometer of our form or LiverpoolΒ’s form. A derby is a derby. Strange things happen.Β”

The return of Edwin van der Sar and return to form of Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence is also a major plus-point for Sir Alex ahead of the game.

Β“ThereΒ’s no doubt that van der Sar back makes a difference. In Moscow, with the experience of Gary Neville, Rio and Nemanja, that was a good solid back four.

Β“In the last year there have been a lot of changes at the back because of injuries. But last season we went through that period of not losing any goals. Van der Sar kept breaking records Β– although IΒ’m not sure exactly whose record he beat because I kept hearing about goalkeepers from some Honduran league whoΒ’d gone so many more games without conceding!

Β“Edwin is a fantastic goalkeeper, though. It was interesting recently that Ruud Gullit claimed he is the best goalkeeper in the world. He got no argument from his fellow panellists, and I think his argument is quite right Β– just look at EdwinΒ’s record over the years, his composure and organisational ability. He does make a difference to us.Β”

Benitez naye analonga hivi:

ALTHOUGH the result against Lyon was disappointing, I was pleased with the work rate of the players.

We had chances to win the game and today, against Manchester United, we have another opportunity to try and turn things around.

If you think too much about the negative aspects of losing, as against the positives that come with winning, it doesn't help the preparation.

As always, we have approached this game in a positive way. We will try to push United from the beginning and see if we can beat them again.

We did that last season, particularly at Old Trafford where we won 4-1. We also beat them here at Anfield and did so without Fernando Torres, who was injured, or Steven Gerrard for most of the game.

Injuries have been a frustration for us lately but it helped after Tuesday that we've had four days to work with the players to see who will be available for today. We've been working hard to try and get them ready as soon as possible.

We've had to manage with different options at times, but I'm confident the squad can help us bounce back from a difficult spell.

No matter who is selected to play, we have to approach today's game with the same spirit that saw us beat United home and away last season.

If we can win again this afternoon, it will help us moving forward into our next games.

The defeat at Sunderland last weekend saw us move down to eighth place. However, when you are not doing as well as you would like, it is better not to worry too much about the table.

The difference in the top half is not too great. There are four or five teams at the top who are all very close. Win or lose one or two games in a row and everything can change.

It is better to just concentrate on yourselves, improve the team and try to get three points in each game. If you can then put a run together, the table will look more appealing.

We won six games in a row before our run of four defeats.

We are not used to losing matches like that but know that if we can win six games in a row once, we can do it again. We just need to win the first one again and take it from there.

Win today and we close the gap to four points behind Manchester United. Lose and it will be 10.

Of course, we could draw and it remains seven points, but generally people will look at the situation in one of two ways, positive or negative.

We will approach the game with confidence that we can win.

It was a similar situation when we went to Old Trafford last season, except United still had a game in hand, even when we closed the gap to four points.

We had just nine games to play then, whereas after today, there will be 28 remaining.

There is a long way to go in the title race but, before we can talk about that, we have to do things properly.

The mentality of the players was really good in the days following our loss at Sunderland last weekend, and also this week after the defeat to Lyon.

Their reaction has been good. They know that we have to improve and everybody is working very hard to try and change things.

As I say, we have to look for positives. Our experiences against United from last season have helped us ahead of today's game. We know we can beat anyone if we play to our level.

Once again, we must show character and play as a team. That can be key here this afternoon and also for the rest of the season.

We are currently in the middle of Kick It OutΒ’s One Game, One Community campaign.

The message is clear. There is no place for racism, not only in football but anywhere.

As always, everyone at Liverpool Football Club is right behind the campaign to keep racism out of football.

Rafael Benitez

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has defended his transfer policy - claiming that when he spends big, he gets it right.

The Spaniard has been criticised for bringing players to Anfield who have gone on to flop, while his failure to produce significant homegrown talent has also been scrutinised.

Last season's Β£20million summer signing of Robbie Keane
from Tottenham is often highlighted as Benitez's
major mistake, with the striker quickly returning to Spurs in the winter.

But the Reds boss insists that it is only when he spends a small amount of money that he takes risks.

Benitez said in the News of the World: "Players who cost more than Β£7million, we have 80 per cent success and below this figure we have to take some gambles.

"But if we are spending some money, 80 per cent of signings are good.
"And if we make a mistake, we try to find solutions as quickly as possible because we can't sign four wingers and spend Β£15m on each winger and still they don't play. Other teams can do this but we can't.

Massive money

"Take Robbie Keane. For different reasons he didn't play at the level that we know he can play but because he's a good player, we brought in a massive amount of money."

The Β£20m purchase of Alberto Aquilani
has also come under the spotlight as the Italy international has yet to play since leaving Roma in August after ankle surgery.

Benitez, though, claims he was given incorrect medical information, adding: "When we were signing him, one of the best doctors in the world said that by the end of August he could be available.

"But we were not signing a player for four or five weeks but for four or five years."

Former Liverpool player John Arne Riise
expects Aquilani to prove a success at Anfield, having played with the midfielder at Roma.

"Alberto is the perfect replacement for Alonso," Riise said in the Sunday Mirror.

"When he is fit and ready to play he will show what he is capable of, I am sure. He is a fantastic player on the ball, very technical."
