FERNANDO TORRES could make a shock return for Liverpool FC next week – but Rafa Benitez fears another potential selection headache in defence ahead of the crucial trip to Manchester City.

Torres has been absent since limping out of the FA Cup third-round replay defeat to Reading on January 13 with a knee injury.

The Spaniard underwent an operation in Barcelona and was originally expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

But the striker was back running in training on Tuesday, raising hopes he could be available for the crucial Premier League visit to near rivals City on Sunday week.

Liverpool, though, are mindful of rushing Torres back into action and manager Rafael Benitez will only consider handing the player a return if he is fully convinced by his fitness.

Torres has made only 19 starts in all competitions during an injury-hampered campaign but remains Liverpool's leading scorer with 12 goals.

While the news on Torres is encouraging, Benitez is sweating on the possible absence of centre-back Jamie Carragher.

The defender hobbled off shortly after half-time of Wednesday's 1-0 defeat at Arsenal after suffering an adductor problem.

Benitez later described the injury as "not serious" but Liverpool are awaiting results on a scan.

Early indications are that the centre-back is unlikely to be risked for the Europa League tie against Unirea Urziceni next Thursday.

But with Sotirios Kyrgiakos still to serve two games of his domestic suspension, the absence of Carragher from the Eastlands encounter three days later would stretch resources at right-back.

Glen Johnson remains sidelined with a knee injury, leaving only Philipp Degen or young duo Martin Kelly and Stephen Darby to fill the position.

Degen has started only three Premier League games this season while Kelly and Darby are yet to make their full debut in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, the agent of Milos Krasic has dismissed claims suggesting the CSKA Moscow forward will join Liverpool in the summer.

Reports in Russia this week suggested that Krasic would arrive on a free transfer after his representative, Dejan Joksimovic, travelled to Merseyside.

But Joksimovic said yesterday: "I was in Liverpool to sort out a transfer.

"But not for Krasic, for Milan Jovanovic, the Standard Liege forward who has signed a three-year contract with the English side and will start playing there this summer. Krasic is not signing for Liverpool, and hasn't even held talks with them.

"Everything is just rumour so far."

Liverpool find their level

Not so long ago, Liverpool were competing at the very highest level, proving they were still a force to be reckoned with in European football by making it to two Champions League finals in three years between 2005 and 2007.

Not so any more. Last night's narrow 1-0 win over Unirea Urzicieni in the Europa League served to highlight just how far Liverpool have fallen.

A game against the relatively unknown team from a small town in Romania, played out in a tepid atmosphere at Anfield, was a far cry from where Liverpool were at a year ago, when they beat Real Madrid in front of 85,000 fans at the Bernabeu in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The scary thing was that Rafa Benitez's side looked like they should be playing at this new, less glamorous level.

Missing Fernando Torres once again, Liverpool lacked anything remotely resembling a cutting edge up front and it took the introduction of a 19-year-old novice, albeit a promising one, to break down Unireas' stubborn resistance by laying on the only goal of the game.

The very real fear is that Liverpool are incapable of breaking out of their current malaise and destined to languish in these depths - 'depths' because of the club's rich history in more salubrious competitions - for some time to come.

Should they take Thursday night's form into the weekend's Premier League game with Manchester City, they stand to lose yet more ground in the race for that final Champions League spot.

And the irony is not lost on ED that Liverpool are reportedly one of the teams who are against the idea of a fourth-place play-off being introduced next season. After all, it's increasingly looking like Liverpool will need all the help they can get to get back into Europe's premier club competition.

Much as there is some degree of concurrence kwenye level ya football creativity shown yesterday, i wouldn't bother much about the so called "their level"

we have already witnessed lots of surprises in european soccer especially when big clubs play relatively unknown teams!! remember famagusta ya cyprus walivyosumbua?? remember BArca lost a game ndani ya camp nou kwa katimu kadogo sana?

i would rather treat the post [ingawa hukuweka source] as a fanatic alert by an author who either supports manure or Everton!!!

A good "fanatic" analysis iko the goalposts - ushabiki mtupu huko lakini una ukweli

Hiki kikombe Livepool ooops loserfools lazima mchukue angalau Benitez waache kumsakama kidogo.

Timu yeyote leo hii inaweza kuibuka kidedea, I hope the quality of football in 2nd period will be the same as 1st period.
