Merseyside Polices deputy chief constable has explained why the force took legal action to bring forward the derby kick-off time.
DCC Andy Cooke said the 5.30pm kick-off would cost an extra £50,0000 for the hotly anticipated Premier League clash between Everton and Liverpool from 5.30pm to 2pm or earlier.
The application was withdrawn during today's court hearing after Everton agreed to increase segregation inside Goodison Park.
The police felt it important to make a stand against football matches being moved in favour of TV screening over public safety.
DCC Cooke said concerns centre around the fact a lot of people would be off work on a Saturday and would be likely to drink more with a later kick-off time.
Theres plenty of evidence that the later the kick-off the more disorder we get.
People in pubs across the city will be watching the game, a lot of them will be drinking for a long time prior to kick-off.
He said the force would need to put more police on duty for a 5.30pm kick-off at the ground at Goodison Park, in Liverpool city centre and across the region.
Merseyside Police can recover some of their policing costs for the derby game from Everton FC but thousands would come from taxpayer funds.
Mr Cooke said: The plan for a late kick off requires 254 police officers covering the area around the stadium, inside the stadium and also the city centre.
The operation would be extended to 17 hours, which would result in valuable resources being displaced from their ordinary duties from across Merseyside. Additional resources would also be deployed to police licensed premises across the county. The cost of that operation to date would be £78,500 and at least £50,000 of that would not be recoverable from the club. There is no doubt that the late kick off, to facilitate the match being played on live TV, would significantly stretch our resources.
The deputy chief constable added: The vast majority of supporters on both sides are very well behaved but there is a minority who follow the football who set out to cause problems.

Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce
Philippe Coutinho has signed a new long-term
contract.
The 22-year-old has committed his future to the
Reds by penning the deal at Melwood today.
Brendan Rodgers signed Coutinho from Inter
Milan in January 2013 and, to date, he's made 81
appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals. He
has also re-established himself in the Brazilian
national squad.
Moments after putting pen to paper on the
contract, Coutinho told Liverpoolfc.com: "I'm
really happy. It's a dream come true playing for
this great club and being part of this squad.
"Today I've committed my future to the club and
for this I'm feeling very pleased.
"This club is great and the fans have always
supported me, so I've been eager to sign this new
deal since conversations started. Today is a very
happy day."
He added: "It means so much. This club has
given me the opportunity to play and believed in
me even though I hadn't been playing regularly at
my previous club.
"I've had a great reception since my first day
here. As I always say, Liverpool is a big family
and I'm a happy person here."
Coutinho has been in outstanding form in recent
weeks for Liverpool, leading to him being voted as
the club's Player of the Month for December.
After claiming two assists in the Reds' 2-0 victory
over West Ham United on Saturday, Rodgers
reserved glowing praise for the No.10, describing
his performances as 'top level'.

Let's now aim for the EPL title next season with purpose - we simply MUST WIN IT. And achieving this will need to have nothing to do with BR but rather FSG who need to impose themselves more and more in the football affairs of LFC.

Hii sio sawa mkuu. Balo wala agent wake hakuwafata transfer committe na kuwaambia waacheni. Ni kweli hajaperfom na kawa mzigo pale lakini usimuhamishie udhaifu wa watu wengine. Kuwakosa Bony na Remy wachawi wapo mulemule LFC

Mkuu nami nasema hatukuwatosa Bony na Remy kwasababu ya Balo. LFC walikuwa na sababu zao zingine. In fact, Balo alikuwa approached baada ya medical ya Remy kufail (kimaajabu ajabu). Kama LFC ilikuja kumapproach Balo baada ya kumshindwa Remy na kucease interest kwa Bony, iweje tena Balo ndo awe sababu ya kuwatosa?

and that was my point, decision ya kuwatosa Bony na Balo ni enticing moves zilizokwisha anza kati ya sponsor wa Balo na Liverpool... Balo was offered to sevral clubs including Arsenal, and it was a business decision ndio maana hata mshahara wa Balo kuna percentage inalipwa na sponsor

Mkuu inamana hapa Liverpool uyu jamaa hayuko big team wala kuwa surrounded great players wakumfanya a shine?????Mi naona hapana......tatizo la Balotelli ni mfumo tu haumpi nafasi, LFC tumempa muda mwingi wa kucheza kama lone striker kitu ambacho yeye kwake kigumu. Game moja tu ambayo alicheza na striker mwenzie "WAKUELEWEKA" D15 ni ile Spurs nayo alicheza vzuri ya ugenini. Mtazame Mario uko alipopita mara nyingi hakutumia kama lone striker.
Naungana nawewe, sababu ameshindwa kuonesha thamani yake so far tunaweza kumuacha aende ili tutafute striker.
