How Liverpool 2.01 was built – and FSG abandoned any plans to sell

Two years ago, Liverpool Football Club was at a pivotal moment under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group (FSG), with uncertainty surrounding their future. FSG had engaged U.S. banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to explore interest from potential investors, considering both a minority stake sale and a full sale after Chelsea was sold for £2.5 billion. Liverpool chairman Tom Werner emphasized that there was no urgency to sell, and FSG was exploring options while maintaining their stewardship.

Fast forward to today, the situation has dramatically changed. FSG remains in control, and Liverpool is thriving, currently leading the Premier League and performing well in other competitions. The transition from Jurgen Klopp to new coach Arne Slot has been smooth, with Slot implementing subtle changes while retaining much of the existing squad.

Under FSG’s management, significant changes have occurred in the club’s executive structure, particularly in recruitment and loan management. Michael Edwards returned as CEO of football, overseeing a revamped recruitment department and the appointment of Richard Hughes as sporting director. The club has also focused on expanding its scouting network and enhancing its loan management strategy.

Despite some fan criticism regarding FSG's cautious financial approach, the ownership has revitalized Liverpool’s operations, with ongoing investment in infrastructure and a commitment to a self-sustaining business model. Talks of a sale have diminished, with FSG now focused on long-term stability rather than divestiture. The club is poised for continued success, with plans for further development and a commitment to maintaining high standards in football operations.
