Pottery/Ceramic Designer (volunteer)
Mzinga Creek Pottery and Ceramics
Location: Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania
Timeframe: 9 months - 1 year (flexible)
Remuneration: accommodation in secure housing
About Mzinga Creek: Mzinga Creek was set up in 2004, with the objective of promoting Tanzanian culture through the medium of clay art. Working with young artists we produced attractive earthenware and stoneware clays for decorative and functional use including planters, flower vases, lamp stands, bowls, oven pots (casseroles), figurine sculptors, clay masks, ceramic plates, candle holders and many more. Finished products are available for sale at our factory warehouse (Mtoni Kijichi) and our shop (Mikocheni B, off Rose Garden Rd). We supply various shops in Dar-es-Salaam.

Please note that the cost of travel to Tanzania will be covered by the candidate.

Responsibility
- generating original ideas;
- producing sketches and sample designs;
- preparing clay and other materials for use;
- using kilns, a potters wheel and/or moulds to produce items;
- using a variety of techniques to create finished products;
- investigating and choosing appropriate production processes and materials (stoneware, earthenware, porcelain etc);
- maintaining awareness of current design trends, fashion and influences;
- undertaking market research, marketing and business development activities;
- running workshops/teaching classes;
- giving demonstrations;
- attending/displaying work at exhibitions and craft fairs;
- train young Tanzanian artists in pottery and ceramic design
- Qualification in pottery
- Experience in pottery production
- Experience in working with fuel kilns
- Experience in glazing
- Experience in reduction firing
