I'm currently in summer excursion in Botswana and Namibia, guys these fellow are really ahead as far as development is concerned. No African countries are matching these territories. Leave alone the bandits economy, they have nothing to offer us as a case study.

With solid minerals driving those economies, one slip in global prices and they all come tumbling down. Ask Nigeria, Angola, Venezuela. And with no manufacturing to speak of since they import everything from toothpaste to brassieres from South Africa. Both countries are too tiny population wise and resource wise to impact their poorer neighbours significantly ,so yes, the bandit economy has alot to offer, all our shortcomings notwithstanding.
Before you exit Botswana /Namibia, ask yourself, what intellectual pursuits do they lead Africa in?? Again, bandit economy has a track record there, so i would be more economical with words if i were in your shoes.

Brother achana na longo za huko eac, these economies are really doing good. Not only in GDP but also in social and other parameters. If you look, eg, the ratio of doctor to patients, teacher to students, classroom to students, book to students, percentage of tarmac roads, corruption perception index etc in final analysis one can say these countries are not belonging to this continent. The issue of population size has neutral correlation with the economy, there are many countries with very minimal population size which are economically striving eg Burundi. Again the issue of importing goods doesn't hold water for me, coz even the giant European economy German (where am based) import a long list of goods, but still the economy is doing great.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said yesterday that although he was unhappy that Kenya has lost out two major infrastructure projects to Tanzania there was no reason to have bad relations with President John Magufuli's country.

Uganda has decided to construct a new pipeline through Tanzania while Rwanda has decided to do a joint railway with Tanzania as well.

Yesterday, the President speaking in Brussels said he did not see Tanzania as a threat.

"I am excited that for the first time we are starting to see major projects go to the our neighbours. This is not competition but its complimentary,"said the President

"All these corridors will open up Africa and improve intra-Africa trade which in my view will be the best thing," said the President.

He said it was the right of both Uganda and Tanzania to decide where and to do undertake their infrastructure projects.

He said despite the disappointments Kenya was determined to continue building its infrastructure.

"These projects may link up one day in future. you never know," Uhuru said.

Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda agreed in 2013 to link up to Mombasa port along a standard gauge railway.

According to the East African Community member states’ studies, the Tanzanian option would cost Rwanda between Sh80.5 billion and Sh91 billion, while the Kenyan one would cost Sh101 billion.

After Rwanda’s exit, Kenya has been exploring terminating the standard gauge railway in Naivasha or Kisumu.

But Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the withdrawal won’t have a major impact. He acknowledged extension of the line to Malaba may be unnecessary, if landlocked countries pull out.

Eliakeem, kumbe you too have been to Botswana, excellent country. Was in Francis town and Gaborone and my oh my, aren't they clean and organized! Though there were some shanty Townships in the 2 cities with deplorable life, their size was nothing to what I see in Kenya and also what I saw in Dar.

Side from Botswana, I was in Mauritius and I can proudly tell you, wameendelea kuliko Portugal na Czech (only places I've been in Europe.). Nyumba za mabanda hawana, miji Yao ina miundo msingi kila mahali, hata pia kule mashinani.

Hayo kando, Tanzania is growing fast, but so is Kenya and you must remember we already have an edge over you so that means you are not catching up with us any time soon. Though sisi sote tuko kwa developing world, Tanzania iko kwa Least Developed Countries while Kenya iko kwa lower middle income bracket

Tanzania: Firm Establishes Plant to Refine Furnace Oil Locally

Bagamoyo — Tanzania industries will soon start procuring heavy oil locally as Kamal Group launched its Sh10-billion factory for refining the furnace oil.

Kamal Group said during the weekend that its newly-launched heavy oil refinery in Zinga (Kerege) will help Tanzania to save $15 million in its foreign currency reserve which is currently spent on importing the product.

The oil is one of the cheap fuels available for industrial use.

The Dar es Salaam-based company has an industrial park in Bagamoyo established under the Special Economic Zones (SEZ). The refinery which will also produce lubricants is built in the zone.

The firm has also invested in the production of steel, industrial and medical gases and power generation.

"Going by the research that we have conducted, there is no any factory in Tanzania that is currently producing good-quality of furnace oil with proper technology. This means that Tanzania will be saving about $15 million of its forex reserves which is currently spent on importing the products per annum," said the Kamal Group chairman Mr Gagan Gupta.



Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Adelhem Meru and the Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania Mr Sandeep Arya presided at the event that was also attended by various members of the business community.

Speaking at the event Dr Adelhem Meru thanked the company for being one of the six companies that have set up private Special Processing Zones in the country.

"The government will continue working with you to make sure that your investment dreams especially in these zones are achieved," he said.

According to Mr Gupta, Furnace oil demand is not limited to Tanzania. That means the company will be exporting its products to other neighbouring countries like Kenya, DR Congo, Uganda and Zambia among others.

Apart from transferring the technology to Tanzanians, the country will also benefit through creation of at least 200 direct and indirect jobs in the refinery.
