Morning Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

Paul speaks of his plans to visit the Corinthians for a third time.

His second visit had been a painful one (2 Corinthians 2:1).

He mentions that his ability to perform miracles proves that he is a true apostle in comparison to the special “apostles” who had been deceiving the people.

Paul reminds the Corinthians once again that he did not ask the Corinthians for monetary support, and his concern now is that, by so doing, he caused the Corinthians to miss out on a blessing.

The reading concludes with Paul expressing some fears about what he will encounter when he visits the church in Corinth.

Reflection.

How does Paul express his concern for the Corinthians (verses 14-19)? What does Paul fear when he comes to visit again (verses 20 and 21)?

What preparations does your community of faith make when they anticipate the arrival of a special guest?

Pray.

Gracious God, you are always near, ready to help in times of distress and drive out my fears.

I trust in your promises, knowing you will surround me with your steadfast love and care.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

2 Corinthians 12:11-21

2Corinthians 12:11

I have been foolish. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I am in no way inferior to these “superapostles,” even though I am nothing.

2Corinthians 12:12

The signs of an apostle were performed among you with all endurance, signs and wonders, and mighty deeds.

2Corinthians 12:13

In what way were you less privileged than the rest of the churches, except that on my part I did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

2Corinthians 12:14

Now I am ready to come to you this third time. And I will not be a burden, for I want not what is yours, but you. Children ought not to save for their parents, but parents for their children.

2Corinthians 12:15

I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your sakes. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?

2Corinthians 12:16

But granted that I myself did not burden you, yet I was crafty and got the better of you by deceit.

2Corinthians 12:17

Did I take advantage of you through any of those I sent to you?

2Corinthians 12:18

I urged Titus to go and sent the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? And in the same steps?

2Corinthians 12:19

Have you been thinking all along that we are defending ourselves before you? In the sight of God we are speaking in Christ, and all for building you up, beloved.

2Corinthians 12:20

For I fear that when I come I may find you not such as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish; that there may be rivalry, jealousy, fury, selfishness, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.

2Corinthians 12:21

I fear that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, immorality, and licentiousness they practiced.

Morning Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

Paul begins to tell about his vision as if it happened to someone else, but he is really talking about himself.

He reveals that he was given a painful physical ailment, and he concludes by saying that when he is weak, he is strong because he knows that God’s kindness and power are all he needs and that he does not need to rely on his own strength.

Reflection.

In Paul’s day, people argued about how many levels heaven had.

The third level was said to be where God dwells.

What does Paul say about this vision of the “highest heaven” (verse 2)? What does Paul say about a painful physical ailment he has (verse 7)?

What are your thoughts about Paul’s statements in verse 10?

Pray.

Lord God, you are all I need.

Even when I am weak, I am strong because I trust in your steadfast love and care.

I am always secure in your powerful and protective embrace.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

2 Corinthians 12:1-10

2Corinthians 12:1

I must boast; not that it is profitable, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.

2Corinthians 12:2

I know someone in Christ who, fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows), was caught up to the third heaven.

2Corinthians 12:3

And I know that this person (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows)

2Corinthians 12:4

was caught up into Paradise and heard ineffable things, which no one may utter.

2Corinthians 12:5

About this person I will boast, but about myself I will not boast, except about my weaknesses.

2Corinthians 12:6

Although if I should wish to boast, I would not be foolish, for I would be telling the truth. But I refrain, so that no one may think more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me

2Corinthians 12:7

because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.

2Corinthians 12:8

Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me,

2Corinthians 12:9

but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.

2Corinthians 12:10

Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Neyman, the great Syrian general had leprosy from his birth and nobody in Syria knew what to do about it.

God used an Israelite maid whom the Syrian army had captured in Israel to advise Syria.

This is what she said:

"Had my master knew there was a prophet of God in Samaria he would have gone there and the prophet would have cured him of his leprosy. "

Today, 3 states in Syria are Christians because Neyman heard and obeyed the voice of God through that enslaved maid.

Life is not by chance, it is by ordination. Everything you see or hear was preplanned never take it for granted.

Have a great Sunday all of you

Evening Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

Today’s reading is a hymn of thanksgiving for God’s eternal goodness and love.

Written as a litany that was probably sung by the priests during worship, the words “his love is eternal” are a congregational response at the end of each verse.

Reflection.

Verses 4-9 recount the story of creation as recorded in Genesis 1:1-19, and verses 10-22 recall God’s saving acts in Israel’s history.

When reading this psalm, what is the effect of the repeated response at the end of each verse?

Try writing your own litany by recalling times in your life when you experienced God’s goodness and love and inserting the words “his love is eternal” at the end of each sentence.

Pray

Your love, O Lord God, is eternal.

I thank and praise you for your goodness and proclaim your mighty deeds. Your love is eternal!

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

THIRTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

FIRST READING
“The kingdom and the dominion shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High.”
DANIEL 7: 15 - 27

“As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious and the visions of my head alarmed me. I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made known to me the interpretation of the things. ‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, for ever and ever.’ “Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze; and which devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet; and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up and before which three of them fell, the horn which had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and which seemed greater than its fellows. As I looked, this horn made war with the saints, and prevailed over them, until the Ancient of Days came, and judgement was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints received the kingdom. “Thus he said: ‘As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all the kingdoms, and it shall devour the whole earth, and trample it down, and break it to pieces. As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise, and another shall arise after them; he shall be different from the former ones, and shall put down three kings. He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, two times, and half a time. But the court shall sit in judgement, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed to the end. And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; their kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey them.”’

The Word of the Lord.

GOSPEL
“Watch at all times, that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place.”
LUKE 21: 34 - 36

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “Take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man.”
