Morning Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

Israel’s leaders were supposed to care for the people; for not doing so, they will be punished.

The LORD will gather the people who were scattered and return them to their homeland.

The prophet speaks the LORD’s message of the coming of a righteous king from the line of David who will rule with justice.

Reflection

By what name will the righteous king be known (verse 6)? What does this name mean to you? Reread verses 5 and 6.

How is the righteous king described? How is the future described? Do you ever envision a time when all people will live in peace?

Pray

You, Lord God, are the living God who rescues us from sin and death and offers us eternal salvation. Teach me to do what is right and just and to extend your redeeming love to all I meet.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Jeremiah 23:1-8

Jeremiah 23:1

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the flock of my pasture—oracle of the LORD.

Jeremiah 23:2

Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people: You have scattered my sheep and driven them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds.

Jeremiah 23:3

I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have banished them and bring them back to their folds; there they shall be fruitful and multiply.

Jeremiah 23:4

I will raise up shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear or be terrified; none shall be missing—oracle of the LORD.

Jeremiah 23:5

See, days are coming—oracle of the LORD— when I will raise up a righteous branch for David; As king he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land.

Jeremiah 23:6

In his days Judah shall be saved, Israel shall dwell in security. This is the name to be given him: “The LORD our justice.”

Jeremiah 23:7

Therefore, the days are coming—oracle of the LORD—when they shall no longer say, “As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt”;

Jeremiah 23:8

but rather, “As the LORD lives, who brought the descendants of the house of Israel up from the land of the north”—and from all the lands to which I banished them; they shall again live on their own soil.

Responsorial Psalm

40:7-8a, 8b-9, 10, 17

R. (8a and 9a) Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me.

Burnt offerings or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, “Behold I come.”

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. “In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, To do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!”

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. May all who seek you exult and be glad in you, And may those who love your salvation say ever, “The LORD be glorified.

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

Reading I

Heb 7:25—8:6

Hebrews 7:25

Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 7:26

It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens.

Hebrews 7:27

He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself.

Hebrews 7:28

For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.

Hebrews 8:1

The main point of what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

Hebrews 8:2

a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle that the Lord, not man, set up.

Hebrews 8:3

Now every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus the necessity for this one also to have something to offer.

Hebrews 8:4

If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest, since there are those who offer gifts according to the law.

Hebrews 8:5

They worship in a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary, as Moses was warned when he was about to erect the tabernacle. For he says, “See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

Hebrews 8:6

Now he has obtained so much more excellent a ministry as he is mediator of a better covenant, enacted on better promises.

Gospel

Mk 3:7-12

Mark 3:7

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people [followed] from Galilee and from Judea.

Mark 3:8

Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.

Mark 3:9

He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him.

Mark 3:10

He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him.

Mark 3:11

And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.”

Mark 3:12

He warned them sternly not to make him known.
