Arusha

From Arusha, Marc Nkwame writes that Minister of State, Vice-President’s Office (Environment) Dr Batilda Burian has emerged the overall winner in the CCM preferential nominations for the Arusha-Urban constituency.

Dr Burian has outsmarted five other aspirants including the three time parliamentary seat winner, the incumbent Felix Christopher Mrema. According to the CCM Regional Secretary, Ms Mary Chatanda, the only female candidate in Arusha topped votes count in 16 out of 19 wards in the municipality.

There are, however, three urban wards whose results are still under dispute; the party secretary mentioned the three poll conflicted areas as Unga-Limited, Themi Hills and Town Centre.

She explained that many party members, who turned up to vote at various stations in the said areas on Sunday, discovered that their names were missing in the registers. As result, most of them protested by demanding that no one else should therefore vote. Still few ended up voting but other members are not prepared to accept what they describe to be biased votes.

“The issue will be forwarded to the Arusha district (CCM) committee for further solution,” she said.

But having harvested abundant votes in Sokoni-one, Lemara and Sombetini areas with largest populations in town, Batilda’s only worry now should be how to beat her opposition.

Results from Arumeru West were yet to be announced though early reports indicate that Mr Thomas Ole Sabaya is gaining against the incumbent MP Mr Elisa Mollel. In Arumeru East, however, the Deputy Finance Minister, Jeremiah Sumari, won the preferential and may be restored as CCM’s candidate.

Meanwhile, Dr Wilbroad Slaa's wife, Mrs Rose Kamili Slaa whose husband is running for presidency on CHADEMA ticket has lost CCM nominations to Dr Mary Nagu, the incumbent MP.
