Superb Kaseja takes Stars to finals ..To face Ivory Coast in the final tomorrow

JUMA Kaseja's wonderful penalty save saw Kilimanjaro Stars booking their place to the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup final for the first time in eight years, after beating Uganda Cranes 5-4 in post match penalty shoot-outs.

It was simply the best game that deserved the tag ‘clash of the titans' as both teams took the game cautiously and made it difficult for each other to score, forcing the game to into extra 30 minutes.

Stars will now face guest side Ivory Coast, who bundled out Ethiopia, beating them 1-0 in the first semifinal clash at the same venue.

Kaseja guessed right to parry off fourth penalty taken by industrious Tonny Mawejje's low spot kick to bring Cranes' dreams of making seven consecutive final match and 29th overall since the inception of the competition to a dramatic end.

And, Erasto Nyoni stepped up to slot in the very important and decisive penalty sparking wild celebrations from the frenzied fans.

With a lot of pressure behind him Nyoni kept his nerves to slot the fifth penalty with ease. Isaack Esinde, Godfrey Walusimbi, Emmanuel Okwi and Andy Mwesigwa converted their penalties for Uganda Cranes,

while Stars' Shadrack Nsajigwa, Stephano Mwasika, Shaaban Nditi, and Salum Machaku converted their penalties.

Prior to the game on Friday, Uganda Cranes the 11-time champions had not lost a game in Cecafa since 2008, recording 16 wins.

Stars started promisingly and wing wizard Mrisho Ngasa hit the side netting after being released down the right side by Nditi.

In the 25th minute Isinde deflected Nsajigwa's cross to his own goal, but he was lucky as Andy Mwesigwa reacted quickly to clear from the goal line.

Stars wasted another clear chance in the 39th minute, when Ngasa made a good run into the box, but his inviting cross across the goal went begging.

Uganda's best chance came after 48th minute when Mwesigwa's header struck against the crossbar.

Stars defence marshalled by Juma Nyoso and Kelvin Yondan put Okwi and co under police marking, limiting the Cranes to fewer chances.

Meanwhile guest side and one of the Africa's soccer power house Ivory Coast put the political stand off back home aside to march into the final of the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup with a 1-0 over Ethiopia.

Kipre Tchetche once again came from off the bench to net the winning goal for the Elephants in the 71st minute.

He was introduced at the restart to replace Kone Assane. The first half had ended in a barren draw, as both sides failed to convert a few scoring chances.

The Ivory Coast team created more scoring chances, even hitting the cross bar once. In the 57th minute goalie Jemal Bushera made superb save to deny Kone Zoumana.

But Ethiopia came calling in the 73rd minute when Adene Girma could have drew the parity for Ethiopia but his dipping header sailed inches away.

The Ivorians ought to have doubled the lead in the 79th minute but Tchetche struck the wood work with well taken shot. Kone Zouma missed a glorious chance with five minutes to go after he was set clear by Tchetche from the right flank.

The Walias, as the Ethiopian team is known as, have exceeded fans' expectations by reaching the semi-final stage.

The Horn of Africa boys will play Uganda for 3rd place finish and $10,000 prize money on Sunday.

Cecafa tourneys benefit sponsors - Musonye

By ANDREW ORYADA, 10th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 121

THE Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, has called upon more sponsors in the region to support their tournaments because they stand to benefit more than they have sowed.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News' in an interview in Dar es Salaam on Thursday night, Musonye said any serious sponsor would now invest in supporting regional football, because the mileage in return is big in-terms of the visibility across the media in a public relations sense.

"Today we have the cable pay TV SuperSport covering our tournaments and this basically creates awareness in the whole continent and therefore, sponsors benefiting immensely.

"All the 26 matches of the 2010 Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup are being covered by SuperSport and some local TV's around the region and therefore, the sponsors now are benefiting in a big way," Musonye said.

The Cecafa official thanked East African Breweries Limited (EABL), through their Tusker brand, who injected US$450,000 into this years' tournament that he said, is so far proving to be one of the best tournaments organised, with more action packed than any other in the region's history.

"We encourage many other companies to follow the example of EABL to support many of our tournaments because gone are the days when you got very minimum mileage," said Musonye.

However, as he called upon sponsors to come on board to promote the football in the region which will eventually spill over and give them bigger visibility, Musonye cautioned the football leaders in the respective member countries to also work so hard in marketing the game better.

"Don't leave all the work to Cecafa. Try to position your selves back home so that the sponsors come flocking in so that it helps the region in the long run," said Musonye.

Besides EABL who are the major sponsors of the 2010 Senior Challenge Cup, they have also partnered with Airtel, Vodacom and United Against Malaria (UAM).

The regional body has in the past struggled to get sponsors to support their events like the Senior Challenge Cup, U-20 Championships and the Kagame Club Championships, which is partly sponsored by the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, who injects US$60,000 for prize money.

Martina Navratilova suspends Kilimanjaro climb

By DAILY NEWS Reporter/Agencies, 10th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 119

TENNIS legend Martina Navratilova has suspended her first attempt to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania after feeling unwell on the fourth day of the ascent.

Martina was assisted down the mountain by porters and driven to the nearby Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) for assessment. She was in good spirits as she left the campsite at Horombo, but disappointed to have to leave the mountain.

Martina, who was leading a team of 27 climbers to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation charity, had reached 4,500 metres during the day, the highest point of the climb so far.

The Laureus team have had to face unseasonal weather of blizzards and mists over the last few days. The climb began on Monday and she was due to reach the summit on Saturday.

The rest of the team are continuing with the climb. Earlier on Thursday, which was a day four of her ascend, Martina wrote on her blog: "Today we have headed south towards Horombo, crossing the dramatic and windswept Saddle, a barren plain of alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo, Kilimanjaro's two peaks.

"The weather is a little better, but the going is getting tougher and tougher. It seems to be constantly steep and as we started to approach the highest point yet, 4,500 metres above sea level, sheer exhaustion sets in for much of the group and with heavy legs and chests pounding due to lack of oxygen, every step becomes an effort.

"We followed a path stretching out ahead of us where we were supposed to enjoy breathtaking views of the mountain, but the swirling cloud is limiting that. "After reaching 4,500 metres, we were thankful to start heading down towards the Horombo campsite, at 3,700 metres, providing the opportunity for much needed rest and a chance to acclimatise.

"We have two days to go before we reach the summit and the group's mood is fluctuating between exhaustion and exhilaration. It has been tougher than I imagined, but that is when everyone has come together to support each other," she said on her blog.

Navratilova, a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy was attempting to scale the 5,895m peak, Africa's highest free standing mountain with a team of fundraisers including German Paralympic cyclist Michael Teuber and British badminton player Gail Emms.

Martina, who battled breast cancer earlier this year, is raising funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a charity which supports community sports projects around the world, which have helped to improve the lives of over one million young people.

We fear no one, says Wenger after big win

By (AFP)Posted Thursday, December 9 2010 at 18:17

London

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger vowed his team had nothing to fear after they advanced to the knockout phase of the Champions League and a likely showdown with one of European football's heavyweights.

A below-par Arsenal were made to work hard for a 3-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday, with Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri scoring the decisive goals after the Serbs' striker Cleo had cancelled out Robin Van Persie's opener.

However the result was not good enough to clinch first place in Group H, meaning that the Gunners now face a last 16 tie against either Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Schalke 04.

Wenger acknowledged that the possibility of a match against Barcelona - who destroyed Arsenal 4-1 in the Nou Camp last season - was a daunting prospect.

However the Frenchman insisted his team would be confident of progressing regardless of who they were eventually drawn against.

"You would have to say let's be realistic. Barcelona is the super-favourite in this competition at the moment," Wenger said.

"Last year we went out against them. But I feel we had some room to do better because it was 2-2 at home and we were leading 1-0 over there."

Wenger also believes that his teammay also improve by the time the Champions League resumes in February.

"We are in a strong position in the league, we are qualified in the Champions League, we are in the semi-finals of the League Cup," he said.

Cecafa: Walia Antelopes’ run halted

By CHARLES NYENDE in Dar es salaam cnyende@ke.nationmedia.com Posted Friday, December 10 2010 at 19:31

Super sub Tchetche Kipre’s accomplished finish midway through the second half was enough to power guest-side Cote d’Ivoire to the final of the Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory against Ethiopia at the National Stadium on Friday.

The bustling Jeunesse Club d’Abidjan striker used his speed to run clear on the left wing and beat Ethiopia keeper Jemal Bushera via the far post in the 79th minute.

It was a deserved win for the more enterprising west Africans who had created several good chances but were let down by poor finishing mainly from wayward forward Zoumana Kone.

This was the second time in as many matches that Kipre was coming in as a sub to grab the winning goal. He did it first in Cote d’Ivoire’s 1-0 win over Malawi in the quarterfinals.

“Cote d’Ivoire looked streetwise. They had more efficiency and more know-how. It was a very strong team we played against and we are proud of our efforts. We are not down hearted,” Ethiopia coach Ifem Onuora said.

Should have scored five goals

“I had watched Ethiopia in their previous matches I knew how they played but I knew how to play against them. If we were lucky we should have scored five goals,” Cote d’Ivoire coach Georges Kouadio said.

The match started tentatively, with both teams packing their midfield.

Ethiopia were the poorer for this tactics as their passing, patient game was stifled while Cote d’Ivoire, with their ability for swift counters appeared to thrive.

The west African’s showed their potent ability in the 15th minute, Kipre’s twin brother Bolou feeding Marc Goug but his cross flashed across goal with no takers.

Kone got his first of many chances two minutes later, finding himself clear with only the goalie to beat but hurried his shot over the bar.

Destined for penalties

Eric Bile somehow headed wide when hitting the target from Goug’s cross looked the most likely outcome in the 37th minute.

Kone was again wasteful 13 minutes into the second half failing to put the ball past Bushera following another one-on-one situation.

Despite the chances the match looked destined to be settled by penalties before the introduction of Kipre.

He duly delivered 26 minutes later and almost got a second in the 79th minute but was denied by the upright.

AFC polls next month, says chairman Ochiel

By EDITH FORTUNATEPosted Thursday, December 9 2010 at 18:17

AFC Leopards will hold their annual general meeting and elections on January 9, not this month as earlier announced by the club's suspended secretary Robert Asembo.

The club's chairman Julius Ochiel and assistant secretary Catherine Omayo on Thursday sought to clear the air about Leopards' management, insisting that Asembo remained suspended and was not authorised, therefore, to transact any business on behalf of the club.

Ochiel said recruitment of players was on-going and that Leopards has so far signed four players namely Liberians Abraham Cokie and Rahish William , Edward Seda, formerly of Kakamega High School and Chrispino Suleiman.

He said Robert Matano, Noah Wanyama and Eliud Omukuya have been tasked by the club's governing council to put together a team for the 2011 season. Team officially resumes training of Monday at Kabete grounds.

"Our AGM Scheduled for December 5 did take place at the Nyayo National Stadium as planned and all agendas tackled conclusively," Ochiel said.

"The governing council was mandated to fill up the position of vice chairman and organising secretary. It was also agreed that we hold elections on January 9, 2011, for the sake of peace and tranquillity in the club.

"Please note there was no directive or deadline on the AGM."

Mulee incited players, says Hatimy

By GILBERT WANDERA

Former Harambee Stars coach Jacob Mulee has been accused of inciting players to boycott their match against Uganda Cranes last Sunday.

Football Kenya chairman Mohammed Hatimy claimed the former coach was trying to divert attention from his failures in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

Stars lost 3-2 to Malawi before going down 2-1 to Ethiopia in their opening two matches. Players almost failed to play against Uganda over unpaid allowances, but Hatimy has denied this was the reason for their threat.
"He (Mulee) incited the players and we have the evidence. He failed and was trying to divert attention," said Hatimy, who showed us a recording of the team's meeting at which Mulee is heard telling the players not to take to the pitch until their allowances are paid in full.

In the recording apparently taken by one of the technical bench members, Mulee is heard telling the players "enough is enough" and they must demand their allowances or else they may never the paid.
Hatimy said FKL may take disciplinary action against the former coach for alleged sabotage, but was quick to add that it is upto the company's technical committee to make such a recommendation.

"I want to advice the former coach to stop talking about administrative matters and say why he failed on the pitch,"
"It is not true that we owe them allowances from 2007 as he alleges. This was cleared. What is pending are amounts that had not been agreed upon between us and members of the team," he said.

as he tabled payment schedules signed by the former coach and players who featured in the 2007 Senior Challenge Cup.
The FKL boss rubbished reports by his vice chairman Titus Kasuve that the top leadership had frustrated Mulee.
"It is not my work as the chairman to deal with the technical bench directly. We have various committees which he is supposed to report to," "The culture of the executive getting involved in every affair of the federation should not be encouraged and we are trying to get away from that," he said.

He accused Kasuve of meddling in the affairs of the secretariat and this he said has made them unable to carry out their mandate effectively. "The executive must stay away from the secretariat to do their job properly," he said.

Disappointing start for Kenya in SA

By BS MULAVI

Defensive frailties combined with the inability to recycle ball procession contributed to Kenya's 47-0 hammering by New Zealand in the IRB Sevens tournament in George, South Africa.

Benjamin Ayimba's starting line up looked quite optimistic with Innocent Simiyu, Cyprian Shimenga and Leon Adongo expected to ruffle the All Blacks in the middle of the pack. Horace Otieno, renowned for his explosive role as a substitute, was given a rare start, but he hardly troubled the New Zealand defenders.

Kenya barely had their hands on the ball in the first half and the few times they tried to pull phases, possession was lost and New Zealand responded with quick tries. The addition of Brian Nyikuli towards the end of the first half did not reverse Kenya's fortunes. By half time, Ayimba's team had conceded four tries and the score line read 26-0. A lot more was expected from Kenya in the second half, but the team could barely display its athletic style or break the All Blacks defencive line.

The team's inspirational captain Humphrey Kayange looked like a lone figure with a lot of the hard running being left to an energetic Innocent Simiyu and Horace Otieno. Ben Nyambu was introduced late in the second half, but even his enterprising play at the breakdowns could not stop a marauding All Blacks.

Somalia coach Muhanji sees bright future

James Waindi in Dar es Salaam

Former Kenya's international custodian, Washington Muhanji, is relishing new challenges as the assistant coach of Somalia, a team regarded an underdog in the region, but believes there is hope for the Ocean Stars.

Muhanji, who has been with the team for a year, told Feverpitch he was confident of improving the level of football in the war-torn country, and believes some of their players are equally talented to earn places in major European leagues just like other African footballers.

"There is talent is Somalia, but their biggest problems are insecurity, lack of facilities and poor infrastructures. In fact, there is no stadium in Mogadishu and there is no running league. Somalia have been forced to use Djibouti as their training base, and that is where they play their home matches," said Muhanji.

The former Scarlet and AFC Leopards custodian believes with proper facilities and infrastructure, the Ocean Stars can match the rest.

"The Mogadishu Stadium was turned into a military base by the militia and there is no other stadium in the country. There is also no league running, so we have to pick players from villages and try them at the team's camp in Djibouti. Djibouti also has one stadium and training is hectic because all the teams in their league also use the same stadium for training. Besides, training sessions cannot go beyond one hour because other teams would also be queuing to train," Muhanji said.

He noted that Kenya was lucky to be enjoying a successful local league and urged Harambee Stars to turn the superiority of their league in the region into results for the national team.

Tomorrow's final brought forward

The kick-off for the final of this year's Cecafa Tusker Cup has been brought forward to 3.30pm tomorrow and will be aired live by SuperSport, which has been screening live all the matches since the tournament kicked off two weeks ago.
The third-place match is expected to kick off at 1.30pm, and will also be aired live.

Winners of this year's event are expected to pocket Sh2.4 million (30, 000 dollars), while runners-up will go home with Sh1.6 million (20, 000 dollars) and third-placed team will go home with Sh800, 000 (10, 000 dollars).

Meanwhile, with almost two 10 months to go before Harambee Stars face arch rivals Uganda in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kampala, Cranes players have already started plotting for the match and their skipper at the ongoing Cecafa Tusker Cup. Andrew Mweisigwa has told Stars not to expect any point in Namboole.

Uganda beat Kenya 2-0 to knock out Stars from the regional event and Mweisigwa believes they will give Kenya a similar treatment in Kampala on October 9.

"We have never lost a match in Nambole since 2002, when we were lost to South Africa. Teams like Nigeria and Angola have lost there and Kenya should not expect any point there," said Mweisigwa.
