Why ex-Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton should run the FA, and Scousers sticking up for Ferguson?

By Brian Reade

Let's cut Sepp Blatter some slack.
He's right when he says the English can't go around moaning about people lying to them over votes (especially when it's David Cameron who returned from Zurich to persuade Nick Clegg to ditch the pledge he made to voters on tuition fees.)
Blatter is simply saying that if you didn't know before you put your bid in that the entire process was based on fraud you really shouldn't have wasted all that money in the first place.
And he's right. Which is why, if the FA really wants to out-flank the wide boys, it needs someone with the cunning to play them at their own game.

If that's the case Martin Broughton should be a shoe-in as the next FA chairman. His track record proves he can hack it with the worst.
As a rich Chelsea fan he will have observed at close quarters the political machinations of recent times. As chairman of British Airways he'll know all there is to know about dirty tricks.
And as the brains behind Tom Hicks' and George Gillett's eviction from Anfield, he knows all there is about supping with the devil and leaving him the tab.
If he can stitch those two professional sharks up like a pair of kippers, blowing an old flounder like Jack Warner out of the water would be a doddle.
Broughton's your man.

Mick McCarthy believes Wolves are playing too much pretty football and the only way they'll climb out of relegation zone is by getting ugly.
But with the level of ugliness Wolves are already at, this will take some doing.
So a swoop for the unsettled trio of Ronaldinho, Joleon Lescott and Luke Chadwick it is, followed up by attempts to persuade Ivan Campo, Peter Beardsley and Iain Dowie out of retirement.

West Ham 1-3 Manchester City: Yaya and AJ take City level with leaders Arsenal

Published 16:57 11/12/10

Manchester City put talk of dressing room disharmony aside to produce the perfect team display as Roberto Mancini's multi-million pound squad moved level on points with Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal.
City, without suspended former Hammers striker Carlos Tevez, dominated from kick-off, and it was no surprised when Yaya Toure rifled in the opener on the half-hour mark.
The home side rallied after the break and had appeals for a penalty turned down for handball against Yaya Toure.
However, the Ivory Coast midfielder then helped the visitors double their lead when his shot hit the post and went in off goalkeeper Robert Green, before substitute Adam Johnson wrapped things up with nine minutes left.

James Tomkins headed in a late consolation for the Hammers, who face a real battle for survival in 2011.
The visitors should have taken an early lead when Mario Balotelli - involved in a training ground bust-up with team-mate Jerome Boateng earlier this month - missed his kick in the six-yard box from Jo's low cross.
West Ham looked to hit City on the counter-attack, but despite some promising runs from Scott Parker, there were few options offered in the final third.
Junior Stanislas fired his 25-yard free-kick high into the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand.
Upton Park nearly sparked into life after 22 minutes when Stanislas cut inside the City box from the left and drilled an angled strike goalwards, which Joe Hart did well to hold.
Yaya Toure ran through the West Ham rearguard, but his flick from just inside the penalty area lacked power.
City went in front after 30 minutes after a quick break when Gareth Barry fed the ball back to Yaya Toure just inside the area.
Despite an attempted diving tackle by Jonathan Spector, the midfielder crashed his shot into the top corner.
The travelling supporters were chanting "We're going to win the league" as the visitors went close to a second goal when Pablo Barrera hacked Balotelli's header off the line.
The home fans, though, had little to cheer about, with the atmosphere inside Upton Park very flat.
Parker remained industrious and created space for a 20-yard effort, which sailed harmlessly wide.
Julien Faubert did well to turn and whip the ball across the City penalty area, and Frederic Piquionne was unfortunate to see his header fly just over.
West Ham needed some inspiration for the second half, but there was little forthcoming - much to the frustration of the home support.
Victor Obinna drilled the ball in towards the near post from the right, but Hart got there just ahead of Piquionne.
Yaya Toure tried his luck from long distance with a fierce effort, but Green showed strong hands to pluck the ball out of the air.
There were more than a few hefty challenges being put in by both sides, as referee Phil Dowd did his best to let the game flow.
However, as the hour mark approached, Balotelli had pushed his protests too far and was cautioned.
Mancini withdrew Balotelli, sending on England international Johnson, possibly to avoid the temperamental Italian getting himself sent off.
It just about summed up West Ham's afternoon when Obinna cut the ball back from the byline, and Piquionne stepped over - only for Barrera to blast his shot high into the Bobby Moore Stand.
This was a good spell for West Ham now, as for the first time in the match, City came under some sustained pressure.
There were penalty appeals for handball against Yaya Toure as a corner came in, but with so many players jumping, it would have been somewhat harsh.
After 73 minutes, Yaya Toure picked up the ball on the left, ghosted past marker James Tomkins and darted goalwards. His shot hit the near post, bounced off the unfortunate Green's back and into the net for an own goal.
Not surprisingly, all the spirit was drained from the hosts, who continued to defend deep.
The home side were caught again when David Silva slipped in Johnson, who rounded Green and wrapped things up for big-spending City with nine minutes left, before Tomkins headed in a late consolation.

Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom: Downing and Heskey secure derby win

Published 17:00 11/12/10

Stewart Downing and Emile Heskey provided a much-needed lift for Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier as their goals earned victory over derby rivals West Brom at Villa Park.
Downing struck his sixth goal of the campaign after 25 minutes and fit-again Heskey wrapped up the points 10 minutes from time before a late consolation from Paul Scharner.
Victory ended a run of three successive Barclays Premier League defeats and eased Villa's relegation fears.
It was also a boost for Houllier, who had come in for criticism from Villa fans for his behaviour when returning to Liverpool for Monday's clash.

He was warmly applauded by the Holte End when making his way to the dug-out and then saw Downing and Heskey ensure Villa remain unbeaten against Albion since 1985.
West Brom were the better side in the first half with wingers Jerome Thomas and Somen Tchoyi seeing plenty of the ball.
Villa looked nervy but they were transformed in the second period with stand-in skipper Ashley Young a constant threat.
Heskey also caused problems in his first appearance after a seven-game absence following a knee setback.
Houllier made five changes - three of them enforced - including the axing of acting skipper Richard Dunne.
Albion, bidding for a hat-trick of league wins, were the first to settle.
A corner from Chris Brunt found its way to Marc-Antoine Fortune - called up in place of the injured Peter Odemwingie - at the far post but his low shot on the turn did not extend Brad Friedel.
The recalled Carlos Cuellar blocked a near-post Scharner header from another Brunt corner.
A fine pass from Graham Dorrans enabled Brunt to get in a shot, despite the attention of two defenders, which flew across the face of goal.
Villa hit back and Heskey got in front of Gabriel Tamas in connecting with a Young free-kick, but he glanced his header well wide.
Albion stepped up a gear and the woodwork denied Tchoyi the opening goal after 21 minutes.
He twice twisted past James Collins before beating Friedel with a shot which thumped against the crossbar.
Fortune should also have done better when he got free in the area but drove his shot wide of the far post.
It was against the run of play when Downing put Villa ahead. Dorrans lost possession deep in his own half and allowed Marc Albrighton to run to the byline.
His cross was flicked on by Young at the far post and then Downing got in front of Gonzalo Jara to turn the ball past Scott Carson.
Heskey had a shot blocked by Tamas after a lapse of concentration by Scharner.
Albrighton came close to doubling Villa's lead after 55 minutes. Downing supplied a teasing cross from the left which picked out Albrighton but he headed just wide when under pressure from Marek Cech.
Albion responded and a miskick by Jara fell invitingly to James Morrison 10 yards out, but Cuellar got in an important challenge and Morrison's shot drifted wide.
Thomas became the first player to be yellow-carded after an hour for a challenge from behind on Young.
Jara followed him into Mark Halsey's notebook three minutes later for another mistimed tackle on Young.
Heskey just failed to make contact with a low cross from Young but with 10 minutes left the former England forward made sure of the points for Villa.
Albrighton's cross flicked off Collins across the face of goal and Heskey was perfectly placed to nod home from close range.
Scharner reduced the arrears with a minute remaining with a powerful close-range header and in injury time Thomas lifted the ball over Friedel - but also over the crossbar as Houllier's men secured maximum points.

Man United target Schweinsteiger signs new five-year deal at Bayern Munich

Published 18:00 11/12/10

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has signed a new contract to keep him with the Bundesliga club until 2016.
The 26-year-old Germany international had been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, with his previous deal having been due to expire at the end of next season.
But he has now committed his future to the German champions and took to the microphone minutes after the full-time whistle in this afternoon's 3-0 win over St Pauli to inform the club's fans of the news.
In quotes reported on club website www.fcbayern.de, he told fans at the Allianz Arena: "I've extended my contract and I'm staying with Bayern until 2016. Long live Bayern!"

Schweinsteiger declared to the fans: "I've extended my contract for you."
The Bavarian native joined the club in 1998, winning the German under-17 and under-19 championships and starring for the reserves before securing a professional contract.
He has won the domestic league and cup double five times and played in the 2010 Champions League final.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed his confidence last month that Schweinsteiger would not be going anywhere before his old contract expired in 2012.
Rumours persisted that Bayern may have been considering selling him this summer should he not sign an extension by then, in order to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer 12 months later.
However, Rummenigge ruled out that eventuality and said he hoped Schweinsteiger would pledge his long-term future to the club, and that wish has now come true.
"Bastian has developed a great deal in the last two years and I am very optimistic that we and his agents can find an agreement," he said at the club's annual general meeting on November 30.
"Our aim is to give Bastian a long-term contract."
Rummenigge's words were met with resounding applause from the members present at the AGM.
After tying Philipp Lahm down to a new long-term contract recently and with Thomas Muller showing his commitment to the club, Schweinsteiger was the last remaining home-grown talent that still needed to make up his mind about his future.
Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid and Manchester United had also reportedly been tracking Schweinsteiger.

Fulham 0-0 Sunderland: Black Cats climb to sixth after bore draw

Published 17:16 11/12/10

Sunderland climbed one place to sixth in the Barclays Premier League after drawing with Fulham in a low-quality contest at Craven Cottage.
Neither side could complain with the outcome, though Fulham will be frustrated that a series of second-half chances were foiled by some resolute defending.
At one point in the second half Sunderland had a four-on-one overlap and a goal appeared certain, but an abysmal pass from Darren Bent ruined the moment.
It was a dismal spectacle that improved a little in a second half controlled by Fulham, with Clint Dempsey the focal point of their attack.

Resonding to reporter interest from Liverpool and Wolfsburg, manager Mark Hughes stated yesterday that Dempsey would not be sold in the transfer window next month and the USA attacking midfielder showed today why the Welshman is determined to keep him, proving a constant thorn in Sunderland's side.
Fulham barely mustered an alternative threat, however, and are struggling in the final third with Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele injured.
Hovering above the relegation zone, they looked short on confidence and desperately need a win to kickstart their climb up the table.
The match started at a brisk pace with a swinging arm from Lee Cattermole on John Pantsil provoking a furious response from home fans.
Dempsey tested Simon Mignolet with a goalbound looping volley before defender Anton Ferdinand limped off in the 10th minute, replaced by Ahmed Elmohamady.
Nedum Onuoha headed a corner over from an awkward angle but it was only a half chance.
Fulham were suffering from conceding possession far too easily in the final third, though both sides were struggling to build any rhythm amid a frantic opening 20 minutes.
The home defence dealt with a dangerous ball by Jordan Henderson, crowding out Bent and Danny Welbeck.
Fulham finally burst into life in the 27th minute when Zoltan Gera sent Diomansy Kamara into space only for the Senegal striker's final ball to be cleared by John Mensah.
Brede Hangeland produced a timely block on a cross, but the free ball sparked a penalty area scramble that was eventually cleared to safety.
The half was short on quality but Sunderland attacked with more conviction, Phil Bardsley setting up a half-chance for Bent who failed to keep his header on target after leaping high to outjump Hangeland.
Pantsil then got his body in the way to block an attempt by Bent, who on this occasion was teed up by Henderson.
Andrew Johnson replaced Kamara for the second half, an admission by manager Mark Hughes that Fulham desperately needed some inspiration.
But the Cottagers' next raid came not through Johnson but Dempsey, whose chip towards the top right corner was plucked from the air by Mignolet.
Fulham were attacking the second half with far greater vigor and they nearly crept ahead in the 56th minute, but Dempsey just failed to reach Carlos Salcido's brilliant cross.
It then took a cleared header from Bardsley, the last line of defence, to prevent the home side from taking the lead through Dickson Etuhu's goalbound effort.
All of Fulham's best moments were being provided by Dempsey, who saw another delicate shot stopped by the arm of Onuoha just outside the area.
Mignolet produced an excellent save after Johnson had pulled the trigger from point-blank range, but the Cottagers were almost hit on the break.
Sunderland rushed upfield with only Pantsil defending against four players but Bent's crucial ball to Asamoah Gyan was terrible.
Johnson teed up Dempsey but this time Cattermole made the crucial block.
Kieran Richardson then tugged on Dempsey's shirt to concede a free kick on the edge of the area, but Gera's delivery was tame.
**** Zenden sent a low drive narrowly wide of the right post from 30 yards and was then felled by a clearance from Pantsil before groggily rising to his feet.
Bent was flagged offside after being put one on one with Mark Schwarzer, but he missed anyway, summing up a poor match.

Stoke 0-1 Blackpool: DJ has the Seasiders dancing for joy

Published 16:59 11/12/10

The Blackpool bandwagon rolls on with DJ Campbell scoring a second-half winner against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
It means Ian Holloway's side have now collected six wins and 22 points from 16 games - a remarkable tally given they were widely tipped for relegation.
Prior to kick-off a montage of the late Sir Stanley Matthews, who served both clubs and England with distinction, was well received by home and away supporters.
Matthews would have been proud of the way Blackpool not only kept the ball but showed resilience when needed.

Stoke huffed and puffed but were left deflated as their five-match unbeaten run came to an end.
Blackpool showed what they were about in the 15th minute when David Vaughan clipped a volley narrowly over the top after a cross from Stephen Crainey.
Holloway's side were beginning to settle into the game and Campbell found himself in a good position, however, he found the wrong side of the post with his effort.
Stoke almost took the lead in the 36th minute following a piece of inspiration from Ricardo Fuller.
The Jamaican got on the end of pass from Matthew Etherington 25 yards out and sent in a superb shot that beat Richard Kingson but came back off the bar.
Back came Blackpool and Charlie Adam delivered a delightful ball into the path of Elliot Grandin six yards out.
But the midfielder seemed slow to react and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic got there ahead of him and made the clearance.
Stoke were anxious to make the breakthrough before half time and twice came close to taking the lead.
Jermaine Pennant, showing no ill-effects after his injury, delivered a cross into the path of Rory Delap but he headed into the arms of the goalkeeper.
Then Delap found the net but his celebration was cut short with the effort was disallowed for Huth's challenge on Kingson.
Stoke made a determined start to the second half and Dean Whitehead found space on the edge of the area but hoisted his shot over the bar.
Two minutes later Blackpool launched a swift counter-attack and Campbell opened the scoring.
Adam and Luke Varney linked up, resulting in a deft finish by Campbell at the back post.
It was the striker's third league goal of the campaign following his arrival from Leicester in August.
Blackpool were growing in confidence at a ground where some of the top sides in league have found it a struggle in the past.
Adam and Vaughan were pulling the strings in midfield and that meant Fuller and Jones were being deprived of good service.
Fuller did break into the area in the 63rd minute only to scuff his shot wide of the post.
Blackpool then came within a whisker of adding a second goal in the 66th minute.
Gary Taylor-Fletcher came up on the blind side to get on the end of an inswinging free-kick from Adam only for his header to come back off the bar.
Stoke came close to equalising in the 73rd minute when Etherington struck a free-kick firm and true only for it to rattle the woodwork.
Two minutes later Kingson reacted instinctively to push up a goal-bound header from Huth and Crainey cleared off the line as the home side kept up the pressure.
Etherington then cut in quickly from the right but his effort failed to test Kingson before Delap came close, hitting the post with his shot. But Blackpool saw the game out for another welcome three points.

Moyes worried about Everton's poor form and lack of goals

Published 18:15 11/12/10 By MirrorFootball

Everton manager David Moyes admits his side's current form is a worry after they were held to a goalless draw at home to Wigan.
The home side created the majority of the chances but the closest they came was when Marouane Fellaini headed over in the first half and Tim Cahill hit a post in the second.
Everton 0-0 Wigan: Latics hold out to secure vital point
Louis Saha, three times, and Seamus Coleman both had opportunities to score but could not break the deadlock.
Wigan defended resolutely and almost snatched a late winner when substitute Ronnie Stam's shot was turned around the post by Tim Howard.
But Everton have now not won in seven games and Moyes admits their failure to take their chances is affecting the players and the fans.
"It certainly wasn't their attitude. I questioned it a bit in the last home game against West Brom (a 4-1 defeat) but they went for it today," said the Toffees manager.
"They were industrious without having the quality required but we just missed chances.
"I don't think you get better chances in the Premier League than we did today - three or four opportunities.
"The longer we didn't take them the more frustrated we got and the more anxiety came into our play and the crowd. We just have to take those chances.
"The crowd know we have been here before in a similar situation but I think the worrying thing is we are not beating teams at Goodison who, over the years, we have done.
"I am saying 'Is is something else other than just not scoring goals?' and I am finding it hard to look further than that.
"It wasn't just the centre-forward today, there were chances shared around the team and no-one converted any of them.
"The anxiety is coming from the form and our position (two points above the relegation zone).
"We are all wondering where we are going to score a goal.
"I tried to freshen things up with 20 minutes to go and I thought we were worse then than at any time in the game.
"I thought we looked more open and a poorer team and I thought my substitutions today were poor and I made the wrong choices."
Steven Pienaar limped off with a groin injury but could easily have been sent off in the first half after a late tackle on Hendry Thomas, with the Honduran also benefiting from the leniency of referee Mike Oliver.
"He was possibly lucky to stay on," admitted Moyes. "There were a couple of challenges which could have gone against us."
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez praised Oliver for his handling of a scrappy game.
"I felt he kept a good degree of consistency because if I am honest with you Hendry Thomas had a yellow card and then made another challenge card and I've seen yellow cards come from that," he said.
"Pienaar's was a really late challenge but I think you have to give credit to the referee because it was a difficult game to manage."
Martinez was impressed with his side's defensive display and even felt they should have snatched victory at the end.
"When you come to Goodison you need all your players to be concentrating and on top of their game and I think (goalkeeper ) Ali Al Habsi had two or three moments when he showed his quality," added the Spaniard.
"I felt we finished the stronger side. In the first half Everton got a very good momentum and were winning territorial advantage and we just needed to defend well with a lot of composure.
"The performance was what we had to do and was what was needed to get a positive result but in the manner we finished the game I feel we dropped two points."

Waamuzi wameondoa ladha Chalenji- Kocha Z'bar
Friday, 10 December 2010 20:26
Vicky Kimaro
