Spurs readying record breaking £30m bid for Carroll
Published 23:00 15/01/11 By Brian McNally
Tottenham are prepared to smash transfer records to land Andy Carroll.
Spurs boss Harry *Redknapp and *chairman Daniel Levy are refusing to take "no" for an answer as they step up their £30million bid to prise the 22 year-old England international away from Newcastle.
The Toon dressing room is awash with talk that Spurs will make their move for *Carroll this week.
Previous attempts to interest Toon owner Mike Ashley with cash plus players such as Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane were rebuffed.
Sources close to Ashley have insisted the club will not cash in on Carroll at any price.
But Spurs plan to put that statement to the test.
The north London club are clearing the decks for a massive cash bid that could even exceed the previous highest fee for an English striker – the £25.6million Manchester United paid Everton for Wayne Rooney in 2004.
Spurs hope to use the cash from Keane's £6m sale to bolster their bid for 22-year-old Carroll, who has scored 11 goals this season. And if Keane agrees to join Spurs *loanee David Bentley at *Birmingham it will free up the cash to almost *double *Carroll's wages.
Spurs are desperate to recruit Geordie hitman Carroll to spearhead their attack in the Champions League knockout stages.
They aren't put off by the fact he has sworn his *loyalty to his boyhood heroes after signing a *five-year deal earlier this season.
Ironically, Newcastle meet Spurs on Saturday, but Carroll is struggling to play in that game as he battles to *recover from a thigh *injury that will keep him out of today's *Tyne-Wear derby at *Sunderland.

Former England striker Lofthouse dies at 85
Updated Jan 16, 2011 4:33 AM ET
Nat Lofthouse, one of England's most powerful and prolific strikers, died on Saturday. He was 85.
The former miner, who amassed 30 goals in just 33 appearances for England, died in his sleep at a nursing home in Bolton, northwest England, the club announced on its website.
Lofthouse was memorably nicknamed "The Lion of Vienna" after being knocked unconscious in a 1952 international against Austria when he scored twice to clinch a 3-2 victory in the unofficial championship of Europe.
The forward spent his entire career with boyhood club Bolton, scoring a record 255 times in 452 appearances between 1946 and 1960 after his first-team debut was delayed by World War II.
"Nat undoubtedly is a Bolton Wanderers legend," chairman Phil Gartside said on the club website. "He was a one-club man and our football club meant as much to him as he did to us.
"We will miss him but we will celebrate his life, his legacy and great times that he brought to Bolton Wanderers."
Lofthouse's association with Bolton continued after his playing career ended, occupying a variety of roles including chief coach, chief scout, caretaker manager and club president, in which he remained until his death.
Former England and Bolton defender Jimmy Armfield described Lofthouse in a 1995 BBC radio documentary as "the epitomy of the old-fashioned center forward - strong, fast, fearless."
The players' union website says that Lofthouse "set the standard to which all strikers are compared."
Two of his goals helped Bolton win the 1958 FA Cup final with a victory over Manchester United - and the second remains contentious to this day.
Playing against a United side still grieving following the Munich air disaster, Lofthouse barged goalkeeper Harry Gregg into the net to score.

Theo Walcott capped his 100th Premier League outing with a goal in Arsenal's 3-0 win at West Ham - but insisted the team display mattered more.
Robin van Persie also added a brace, the second from the penalty spot, as the Gunners climbed into the top three with an emphatic victory at Upton Park on Saturday evening.

Walcott's goal capped a memorable evening for the England international, but he was more concerned about getting the points than any personal glory.
"All these stats keep getting better, and it's always nice to get goals," he told ESPN.
"But the most important thing was that the team won, we kept a clean sheet so we're very happy."
The performance marked a much-improved display from the 1-1 FA Cup draw against Leeds last Saturday, and Walcott added:
"It was clear we've learnt from our mistakes.
"It showed today. It was a bobbly pitch at times but keeping a clean sheet is important.
"Now we're not thinking about anyone else in the table, just concentrating on ourselves. We're happy just to be where we are and we need to keep on plugging away and keep enjoying our football."
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was also pleased to see a response to the Leeds display, saying: "It's been a busy week but we started strongly and remained strong.
"We had plenty of chances, our technical ability came out again today and we were consistent and convincing."
The build-up to the match was centred on the future of Avram Grant, with reports suggesting the West Ham boss would leave Upton Park on Saturday with former Aston Villa manager Martin O-Neill being linked with the post.
Grant looked a despondent figure after the defeat, but took time to applaud the fans and throw his lucky scarf into the crowd.
Mourinho: Ruud would be welcome
Updated Jan 15, 2011 6:09 PM ET
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho would welcome the return of reported transfer target Ruud van Nistelrooy to the Bernabeu.
The Spanish giants have been linked with a host of forwards following general director Jorge Valdano's confirmation this week that Madrid are looking to bring in a striker to replace the injured Gonzalo Higuain.

Among those names is Van Nistelrooy, who helped Madrid win back-to-back Primera Division titles in 2007 and 2008 during a successful spell in the Spanish capital before moving to Hamburg 12 months ago.
When asked about the prospect of the 34-year-old former Manchester United hitman coming back to Madrid, Mourinho said on Saturday: "Many names are being talked about and they could all be a help for us.
"If in the end it is Ruud then I would be very happy. We know each other from English football, in my first seasons (at Chelsea), I know the player and the person well. I would be delighted if it is him."
Mourinho added of the prolific forward, who this evening scored Hamburg's winner against Schalke in the Bundesliga: "At the moment he is a Hamburg player and we need to respect that situation.

"I don't want to talk of Van Nistelrooy. For you (the media) it's easy. I have to respect Hamburg."
Valdano announced Madrid were in the market for a centre-forward following Real's 3-1 Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg win over Atletico on Thursday - two days after Higuain underwent a back operation that is set to sideline him for up to four months.
Without Higuain, who was Madrid's leading scorer in La Liga in the last two seasons, Madrid are left with just Karim Benzema as their only senior centre-forward.
Mourinho said: "It would be very good for us to have another striker because we don't have so many and we have a lot of games.
"I was very happy when the club opened the possibility of signing a player. The club is working hard to see if it's possible. The market is open until the 31st."

Arsenal, who moved to within two points of top spot, showed the Israeli's team no mercy as goals from Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott put them in command at half-time, before the Dutchman wrapped things up with a penalty on 77 minutes.
Despite guiding the east London club into the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, where they beat Birmingham here in midweek to move within 90 minutes of Wembley, the patience of owners David Gold and David Sullivan - who only appointed Grant during the summer - appears to have run out.
While the club were officially making no comment, Grant's public spat with vice-chairman Karren Brady over the collapse of Steve Sidwell's proposed transfer having appeared to have brought matters to a head.
Arsenal, meanwhile, finally produced a complete passing display to bounce back from the disappointment of their midweek cup defeat at Ipswich as they remain very much in the hunt for the title.
All cameras were trained on Grant as, after a quick exchange of words and handshake with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, he took to the home dugout for what could well be the last time.
There was some sense of irony that Grant's likely departure came at a time when West Ham were actually showing some form, having lost just twice in their previous seven games.
Nevertheless, the Irons remain bottom and they fell behind on 13 minutes when Samir Nasri, back in the starting XI, produced a clever step over from Walcott's cross - which van Persie despatched into the right corner from 12 yards.
Irons full-back Julien Faubert was then lucky to get away with only yellow card from referee Andre Marriner for jumping in two-footed on Fabregas out on the far touchline, which left Wenger less than impressed.
Walcott shot tamely at goalkeeper Robert Green before West Ham replaced Mark Noble, who had just come back from a spell on the sidelines after a hip problem, with former Gunner Luis Boa Morte.
There was a let-off for Arsenal when Johan Djourou's backpass was too short and Carlton Cole darted in on goal - but stand-in keeper Wojciech Szczesny made a fine block and Hines smashed the rebound over from a tight angle.
Van Persie was within inches of making it 2-0 when Arsenal broke quickly through Nasri and his first-time pass into the left of the penalty area was crashed against the base of the upright by the Dutchman.
West Ham were in danger of being overrun and they doubled their lead five minutes before the break.

Van Persie latched onto Fabregas' ball down the left side of the box, which the Dutchman pulled back from the goalline to the centre, where Walcott crashed it into the roof of the net.
Chants of 'You're getting sacked in a hour' rang out from the away end as Grant stood at the edge of his technical area, hands in pockets.
It was more one-way traffic at the start of the second half, van Persie testing Green at his near post and then firing over from 20 yards.
However, Szczesny had to be alert to tip away Freddie Sears' angled drive, which looked set for the top corner after a quick break.
Wayne Bridge, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, tripped Walcott as the England winger nipped into the penalty area. Marriner pointed to the spot on 77 minutes and Van Persie slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.
Irons fans had seen enough, hundreds leaving for the exits, with Grant probably soon to follow.
At the final whistle the Israeli shook hands with his players as they left the pitch, before applauding the fans and throwing his lucky claret and blue scarf into the stands in what appeared to be a farewell gesture.
Barton: I deserve England call
Updated Jan 16, 2011 4:37 AM ET
Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton believes he deserves an England call-up and can only have been overlooked for non-football reasons.
Barton has been a stand-out performer for the Magpies this season as they have acquitted themselves well on their return to the Premier League.

Barton feels he is playing as well as anyone in the country at the moment but thinks his reputation as a trouble-maker precedes him now, and believes this is why he has not figured in England boss Fabio Capello's squads this season.
He told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday programme: "I don't think anyone's playing better than me in the country. That's an honest answer, not a big-headed answer.
"I'm a keen football fan and watch football and there are probably six or seven midfielders getting in the squad for an England game and I certainly don't think there are two players playing better than me - English players - at the minute.
"But obviously with me it's not all about football, is it? When Fabio Capello came in he said he was going to pick form players and I don't think he's done that."
Barton incurred a three-match ban earlier this season for a punch on Blackburn winger Morten Gamst Pedersen. He has been involved in a number of incidents away from the pitch during his career, having previously served two months of a six-month prison term for an assault in Liverpool in December 2007.
In July 2008 Barton was given a four-month suspended sentence for an attack on then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo at the club's training ground in 2007.
FOOTBALL Iraq win with late own goal
Walid Abbas prods into his own net in added time to give defending champions a 1-0 win over UAE in Asian Cup Group D.
Last Modified: 15 Jan 2011 18:39 GMT
Younis takes the credit after his pass into the six-yard box was turned into the goal by defender Walid Abbas [AFP] Reigning champions Iraq beat the United Arab Emirates 1-0 at the Asian Cup with an injury-time own goal to put them in a strong position to make the knockout rounds.
Iraq put themselves in a strong position to join their great rivals Iran in the quarter-finals after the unfortunate Walid Abbas turned the ball into his own goal in added time from a cross by Younis Mahmoud.
Iraq, who were unchanged from the team that lost 2-1 to Iran, had the better of the opening 20 minutes at the Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar, without forcing keeper Majed Naser into action.
But it was UAE who had the first meaningful chance on goal, defender Hamdan Al Kamali leaping highest to crash the ball against the post from an inswinging corner in front of a disappointing crowd of just over 7,000.
And moments later they should have taken the lead when forward Ismaeil Matar nodded the ball on for strike partner Ahmed Khalil, but the 2009 Asian Young Player of the Year headed the ball well over from just inside the six-yard box.
Six minutes before the break Iraq had their best spell of the match when Nashat Akram crashed the ball against the bar with a towering header, then Qusay Muneer unleashed a drive that rattled the upright.
The second-half was again sluggish in getting going, but when it did, Iraq again looked the most likely to break the deadlock.
Captain Younis, joint tournament top-scorer four years ago, forced a corner 10 minutes in.
Struggling
But defender Samal Saeed could only loop his header from the resulting kick well over, with both teams struggling to find their range.
Just past the hour it was UAE's turn to hit the woodwork for a second time as Khalil's blistering pile-driver smacked the bar.
Iraq then went straight up the other end and were denied a certain goal when Ala'a Abdulzehra's header, which looked destined for the net, was deflected wide by Khalid Sebil for a corner.
With both sides badly needing the three points, they made a rash of substitutions to force the breakthrough.
On 79 minutes Saeed again went close for Iraq with another free header from a corner, but it flashed just wide, before that late unfortunate intervention.
In the last round of games, on Wednesday, UAE take on Iran and Iraq play North Korea.

Inter go on ominous run
Defending champions keep Serie A leaders in their sights with fourth straight win under new coach Leonardo.
Last Modified: 15 Jan 2011 22:13 GMT
Eto'o's teammates show the Cameroon forward some love after he scored Inter's brilliant third goal [AFP] Inter Milan continued their 100 per cent record under new coach Leonardo, beating Bologna 4-1 at the San Siro as title rivals Napoli slipped up in a 0-0 draw at home to Fiorentina.
After a difficult first half to the season, Inter were looking like their old selves again as they cruised to victory against their troubled opponents, leaving them perilously close to the drop zone.
Dejan Stankovic, Diego Milito and a Samuel Eto'o brace – taking his tally to 23 goals in 26 games this season – moved Inter up to fourth, for a day at least, and just eight points behind leaders Milan having played a game less.
It was a special night of celebration for Inter as captain Javier Zanetti equalled Giuseppe Bergomi's record of 519 Serie A appearances for the club.
Henry Gimenez scored Bologna's late consolation in a terrible week for the club who were hit with a three-point deduction for failing to pay taxes and player salaries.
It was vintage Inter from the off as Leonardo's team romped to their fourth straight win under the Brazilian, who took over from the sacked Rafael Benitez at the end of December.
Milito had an early chance but somehow managed to hit the woodwork from just two yards out while Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, a reported Inter target, made excellent saves to deny Eto'o and Maicon.
Inter went in front on 20 minutes as Eto'o burst past a defender and then slid a pass into Stankovic to score into an unguarded net, although TV replays suggested the Serbian may have been offside.
Ten minutes later and the hosts doubled their advantage as an inch perfect pass from Thiago Motta sent Milito scampering away before teasing a defender and then finishing left-footed across Viviano, the ball passing through the goalkeeper's fingers.
Potential employers
Viviano may have been hoping his potential new employers missed that error while opposing keeper Luca Castellazzi seemed determined to show he's worth holding onto.

On 34 minutes Marco Di Vaio had a great chance breaking beyond the Inter defence but Castellazzi made a splendid one-handed save from his 20-yard shot.
And moments later he made a sprawling save to stop a Di Vaio free-kick.
Inter seemed to have taken their foot off the peddle after the break as Bologna pushed for a route back into the game.
Gimenez shot narrowly over and then Di Vaio flashed another free-kick barely an inch past the post.
But Bologna's hopes of dragging themselves back into the game were killed by a wonderful goal on 63 minutes.
Eto'o teased a defender out on the left, nutmegged him in passing to Milito who sent a first time backheel into the Cameroon forward's run and Eto'o finished crisply into the bottom corner.
Eto'o put the final nail in Bologna's coffin with a sweetly-struck free-kick into the top corner.
Gimenez then prodded home 13 minutes from time but the game was already over.
Napoli failed to capitalise on their chance to close in on AC Milan in a dull and frustrating stalemate.
The point keeps the southerners second in Serie A, but still three points behind Milan who have a game in hand away to Lecce on Sunday.
Napoli came into this game with plaudits ringing in their ears following last week's 3-0 win over Juventus, after which coach Walter Mazzarri had said it would be difficult for them to ever play better than that.
He was not wrong as they never even got close against La Viola. However, Mazzarri insisted he was happy with his team.
"I'm not looking at the table, we're in competition with ourselves. We need to improve and we are improving," he said.
"We gave our all today, we were balanced without giving away anything at the back. We're high up in the league and all we must do is continue on this path."

City hang on to go top
Goals from Toure brothers and two strikes from Carlos Tevez put City above United after 4-3 win over Wolves.

Debutant Dzeko celebrates with Yaya Toure after setting up the Ivorian's second goal [AFP] Carlos Tevez scored twice as Manchester City survived a late fightback to beat Wolves 4-3 and move to the top of the English Premier League standings as Bosnian international Edin Dzeko made his debit for Roberto Mancini's side.
Argentinian international Tevez struck his 14th and 15th goals of the season while Ivorian brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure both netted as City took a slender one-point lead over Manchester United.
United, who also have three games in hand over City, will return to the top if they avoid defeat to fifth-placed Tottenham in Sunday's match at White Hart Lane.
Third-placed Arsenal kept up the pressure with a 3-0 victory at West Ham United in a what, according to local media reports, could be Avram Grant's last game in charge of the bottom club.
At Eastlands, Serbian midfielder Nenad Milijas had fired Wolves into a shock lead on 12 minutes, rifling home a rebound after a Matthew Jarvis cross.
City's blushes were spared five minutes before half-time however when Kolo Toure controlled on the edge of the six-yard box and prodded a deflected shot past Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey.
Four minutes after the restart, City were in front, captain Tevez weaving his way through the Wolves defence before finishing calmly.
Yaya Toure made it 3-1 five minutes later, lifting his shot over Hennessey to join his brother on the scoresheet after good work by $43 million signing Dzeko, who signed from Wolfsburg this week.
Cruising
Tevez made it four on 66 minutes, stooping to steer home as City looked to be cruising to victory.

But Kevin Doyle slotted a late penalty for Wolves to make it 4-2 and an 86th-minute goal from French defender Ronald Zubar set up a nerve-jangling finale.
City manager Mancini was happy with the way his side performed after a poor start to the game.
"I think we were bad in the first 20 minutes," he said. "We didn't play. But after that we played well. We scored four goals and had two or three good chances."
Elsewhere on Saturday, Chelsea maintained their title hopes with a laboured 2-0 win over Blackburn thanks to second-half goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Nicolas Anelka.
Ivanovic opened the scoring on 57 minutes, firing a low shot through a forest of legs to the relief of under pressure manager Carlo Ancelotti, before a flicked effort from Anelka on 76 minutes made the game safe.
The result put Chelsea back into the top four ahead of Spurs' match against Manchester United on Sunday.
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti voiced hope that the result meant Chelsea had finally turned the corner after a protracted form slump.
"I think that the difficult moment is gone," Ancelotti told Sky Sports.
"We are coming back to get good results. It's not easy to come back and close the gap for the first position but we have to try."
Asked if Chelsea could catch United – who could potentially be 12 points clear of the champions if they win their games in hand – Ancelotti replied: "I don't know. But we will fight every game with our strength."
At the Hawthorns, two goals from Peter Odemwingie – including an 87th-minute winner – handed West Bromwich Albion a 3-2 victory over Blackpool as the Baggies ended their six-match losing streak.
Denied
Blackpool looked to have secured a share of the points when Gary Taylor-Fletcher equalised on 80 minutes before Odemwingie's late effort denied Ian Holloway's men a draw.
Blackpool had taken the lead courtesy of David Vaughan after only 11 minutes, the midfielder curling a superb shot into the top corner just beyond the grasp of Baggies keeper Boaz Myhill.
But West Brom deservedly got back on level terms on 37 minutes, Odemwingie slotting in a cross from Graham Dorrans before James Morrison made it 2-1 early in the second half.
Stoke meanwhile moved up to eighth place with a 2-0 win over Bolton.
Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham opened the scoring, bundling home from close range on 37 minutes. A Matthew Etherington penalty doubled the Potters' lead on 64 minutes to secure the points.
At the DW Stadium, substitute Andrew Johnson scored an 86th minute equaliser just 10 minutes after coming on as Fulham secured a 1-1 draw against Wigan, who had taken the lead through Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega.
In Saturday's late kick-off, Arsenal took control from the start and went ahead after 13 minutes when Robin van Persie lashed in a shot from the edge of the box.
Four minutes before halftime the Dutchman crossed for Theo Walcott to bang in the second.
After Wayne Bridge completed a hapless debut by fouling Walcott, Van Persie completed the cruise with a penalty.
As well as the big game at White Hart Lane on Sunday there are three big derbies as Liverpool play Everton, Birmingham City face Aston Villa and Sunderland, looking to avenge their 5-1 St James' Park thrashing in October, take on Newcastle United.

City hang on to go top
Goals from Toure brothers and two strikes from Carlos Tevez put City above United after 4-3 win over Wolves.
Last Modified: 15 Jan 2011 18:23 GMT

Ansari Fard puts Iran through
Ansari Fard celebrates the goal that made Iran the first team into the Asian Cup quarter-finals [Reuters] Iran qualified for the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup after a well-taken goal from Karim Ansari Fard gave them a 1-0 win over North Korea at the Qatar Sports Club stadium.
The 20-year-old flicked home the winner after 63 minutes of a largely uninspired game, riddled with mistakes from both sides, who largely cancelled each other out in a tedious midfield war of attrition.
Iran, who have now won both their matches and are seeking a first Asian Cup title since 1976, were the better team throughout but their midfield fulcrum of Javad Nekounam and Pejman Nouri rarely found the right pass.
The one occasion they did led to the only goal when Nouri crossed perfectly from the right and Ansari Fard beat his marker to guide the ball home.
Iran top the group with six points, followed by the United Arab Emirates and North Korea, who both have one point.
UAE were playing champions Iraq, who lost to Iran in their opening match, later.
Flu bugs
Iran coach Afshin Ghoutbi, whose players have been hit by a flu bug this week, was forced to make four changes from the side that beat Iraq, but thought his team had taken the lead after 28 minutes.
Ansari Fard held off a challenge from Korean defender Ri Jun-il, and fired in a well-taken shot, but the linesman flagged for handball.
Referee Nawaf Shukralla disallowed the goal then booked Ansari Fard for protesting although TV replays failed to show any infringement.
North Korea, who drew 0-0 with United Arab Emirates in their opening match, were, as expected, largely content to defend in numbers but they had two good scoring chances.
The first came after 17 minutes when striker Jong Tae-se smacked a powerful 25-metre free-kick straight at goalkeeper Mahdi Rahmati who could only parry the shot although the follow-up effort was hit high over the bar.
The second should have made it 1-1 in stoppage time at the end of the game when Hong Yong-jo hit the top of the bar as he turned unchallenged 10 yards out.
Most of the entertainment coming from North Korea's camp was from about 200 fans, almost all of whom were identically dressed in white shirts and ties.
But even their choreographed moves and chants dried up as the match failed to produce any real entertainment apart from the goal.

Serikali izingatie wasanii
Yanga waikacha ZESCO Uhuru
• Papic ahofia kipigo, asingizia majeruhi
SMZ yatishia kuifuta ZFA
na Mohamed Said Abdullah, Zanzibar
