You are in your favourite sports pub watching the explosive showdown at Old Trafford. The Gunners are dominating proceedings as they, time and again, tiki-taka their way into the home defence.

Then, against the run of play, United break with a breathtaking counter on the right. Dimitar Berbatov swings in a lovely ball to Wayne Rooney, who's racing towards goal.

Rooney has just Laurent Koscielny to deal with. He cleverly rounds the defender but when he's just about to pull the trigger, lights out…. Seething United fans, some of whom are barely coherent, turn their rage on KPLC. Unbeknown to them, the power company has got nothing to do with it.

The DO has just stormed in and he orders all patrons home, colonial-style. It's Monday and, thanks to one John Mututho (This guy's piercing eyes suggest he doesn't always drink milk) all patrons must go home and build the nation – that is, eeeh, add to Oparanya's numbers.

Paying sin tax isn't the government's exact idea of nation building, is it? Good people, I pray this doesn't happen to you tonight. The planets in the footballing universe have aligned and the stars are about to collide in the most spectacular fashion imaginable.

At the magnificent Theatre of Dreams, two pedigree practitioners will do impossibly brilliant battle with each other under the enchanted gaze of 68,000 present and millions more across the globe.

With the Stamford Bridge pensioners wobbling in this notoriously volatile season, tonight's showdown will almost certainly give a bearing on the title race.

Mere spectators

Guy Maughflin aptly put it in his "Premier League Chat Room" column in the Saturday Nation:

"For a long time fixtures between United and Arsenal at Old Trafford held the key to the destiny of the Premiership title: if Arsenal didn't concede a goal there, they would be the winners in May; if they did, United would be top of the pile at season's end."

Truth be told, Arsenal is the most entertaining team in England. Their passing is monotonously fantastic. They are a team thoroughly adept at the game of football that they could comfortably do it blindfolded. Uuh la laaah!

But for the past five seasons, unfortunately, Arsenal were mere spectators as Chelsea and United shared all the glory. This has been Arsenal's script these last six seasons: Take the lead, miss a load of chances, gift the opposition a goal, then work hard to lose the match.

But with Samir Nasri in the form of his life, the Gunners' trophy drought might be set to come to an end. The Frenchman has been untouchably brilliant this season. Against Fulham, he steered the Gunners to the top with a stellar display.

Magical moment

His superb brace was evidence of the confidence and swagger his goal-scoring exploits have given him. He showed pace, power and poise to put Fulham to the sword.

In the first goal, he collected the ball from Andrey Arshavin in the area and used two feints to leave a diving-in Fulham defence flowed before crashing into the top right corner.

When Fulham threatened to overrun them as proceedings got worringly familiar at the Emirates, Nasri produced another moment of magic.

He collected Robin Van Persie's pass inside a congested penalty area, jinked past three defenders before pirouetting to keep the ball in play and then – with typical dexterity – scooped into the back of the net from a tight angle. It wasn't just a beauty; It was a goal made in heaven.

And this is the genius Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and the other ageing United defenders will have to deal with tonight. Chances of the home defence succeeding are next to zero.

I also can't wait to see the ‘flying Dutchman' Van Persie and Marouane Chamakh demolishing the Devils. The ‘Terror Twins' is what they will be known as by defenders near and far.

Tanzania are Cecafa champs

Updated 10 hr(s) 38 min(s) ago

By James Waindi in Dar es Salaam

Tanzania are the champions of the 37th edition of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
The hosts stunned guest side and tournament favourites Ivory Coast 1-0 in a physical encounter at a packed National Stadium here, yesterday afternoon.

Tanzania skipper Shadrack Nsajigwa scored the all-important goal from the spot in the 41st minute and Kilimanjaro Stars held on for a famous victory.

This is the third time Tanzania has won the regional event. They previously won it in 1974 and 1994.
Tanzania entered the match without influential striker Mrisho Ngasa, who was suspended for the final, and they seemed to lack ideas in front of goal until Ivorian defender N'goran Kouassi handled the ball in the box as he attempted to clear Salum Machaku's cross and Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessama immediately pointed to the spot.

Nsajigwa stepped up and made no mistake as he sent Ivory Coast's custodian Sangare Ali the wrong way.

The sight of tournament's revelation Kipre Tchetche warming up at the touchline as the second half began send shivers into the Tanzanian technical bench and Tanzania coach Jan Poulsen was forced to bring in two defenders at the expense of his strikers to be able to contain the striker and the gamble worked well.

Georges Bile's 48th minute goal was ruled out for offside and Tchetche forced Tanzania custodian Juma Kasejja to single handed save five minutes later as they pushed for an equaliser with a number of attacks, but Tanzania's rock-solid defence could not be breached.

Meanwhile, eleven times champions Uganda came from behind to pip Ethiopia 4-3 in a thrilling third place play off played early yesterday and earn a consolation in the tournament they had twice won in a row. The win saw Uganda earn Sh800, 000 (10, 000 dollars).

Both sides had equal chances, but Uganda's experience gave them an edge over their opponents as they came back three times before Sula Matova scored the winner in the 72nd minute.

Ethiopia's striker Omod Okwury opened the goal rush with a second minute strike after beating an offside trap, to leave the former champions shell shocked. Cranes who started with midfielder Musa Mudde in an unfamiliar fullback right position picked themselves up and almost equalised in the fourth minute when Dan Wagaluka's strike came off the cross bar.

They finally equalised a minute later when Cranes striker Henry Kisseka poked in the ball from a goal-mouth melee after Ethiopia's custodian Binyam Habtamu fumbled with the ball. Kisseka almost made it 2-1 for Uganda in the eighth minute, but failed to find target with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Ethiopia restored their lead in the 33rd minute with another Okwury's goal after he finished a move started by Shemeles Godo in midfield.

Ethiopia's keeper Habtamu fumbled again in the 39th minute, but Uganda's Saddam Juma shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Cole writes off City's title chances

Published 11:12 13/12/10 By MirrorFootball

Andy Cole has written off Manchester City's title chances.
The former striker, who played on both sides of the Manchester divide but is best remembered for his successful spell at United, has made his bold claim despite the Blues' rise to joint top of the Barclays Premier League table.
Victory at West Ham saw Mario Balotelli substituted to stop him getting himself sent off - followed a day later by confirmation that Carlos Tevez wanted to leave, triggering a downward spiral in the club's relationship with their captain.
A strongly-worded statement released by the South American last night revealed that his relationship with senior City officials - believed to be chief executive Garry Cook and football administration officer Brian Marwood - had broken down beyond repair.

City are privately indignant of such claims, questioning exactly what Tevez's issues are given his much-publicised anguish at being separated from his two young daughters.
It all paints a pretty sorry picture, which Cole is convinced will lead to their championship challenge fading.
"There are a lot of problems there," he said.
"Anyone who has any common sense and understands football knows that.
"You can't have disputes with the manager at such regular intervals.
"Every other week someone is coming out saying they are not happy. You can't run a tight ship like that.
"You don't see it at Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea."
Tevez has said there are no problems in his relationship with Mancini, although that did not prevent him triggering a touchline row with the Italian when he was substituted near the end of City's win over Bolton last weekend.
City are more inclined to take a view that Tevez's position has shifted dramatically since the club refused to engage in talks aimed at extending an already massive contract - claimed to be in excess of £250,000-a-week by former player Rodney Marsh.
As Tevez still has three-and-a-half years of his present deal to run, City's stance is understandable.
When the player returns from a short break in Tenerife tomorrow, he might be under pressure to state exactly what his problem is, although given the closeness of his relationship with advisor Kia Joorabchian, hoping for another change of mind - such as the one United's Wayne Rooney completed after his own tumultuous week in October - may be fruitless.
City would need to get in a replacement for Tevez pretty quickly given Emmanuel Adebayor seems certain to leave next month after not even making Mancini's squad at West Ham on Saturday, when fellow striker Balotelli showed his temperament cannot be trusted either.
For Cole, this all has a destabilising effect, despite the excellent recent form of David Silva and Yaya Toure.
"There are loads of issues," he reflected.
"It would be difficult for any team to win the title under those circumstances.
"If you have so many big players in one team who are not playing, it is going to cause you problems.
"You have to deal with them."

Carroll assault charge dropped

Newcastle said today they were "pleased" that an assault charge against England striker Andy Carroll has been dropped.
The Magpies number nine, who scored again at the weekend, has been informed by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that it had reviewed the case against him and decided there was no realistic prospect of conviction.
Carroll was arrested in October following an allegation he assaulted his ex-girlfriend Laurie Henderson, a lingerie model, at her home in Ponteland, Northumberland.
He was held for questioning overnight before appearing the next day at Tynedale Magistrates' Court in Hexham and was bailed to live with club captain Kevin Nolan.

Three days later his chrome-plated Range Rover was torched outside Nolan's house and graffiti aimed at Carroll was sprayed on a garage door.
A Newcastle United spokesman said: "The club is pleased for Andy that the matter has been concluded."
A CPS spokesman said: "We take all cases such as this extremely seriously and we considered the evidence initially provided by the police and decided the correct charge was one of assault by beating.
"We have a duty to keep cases under constant review and once we received a full file of evidence before the trial we looked at the case again.
"Having reviewed all the evidence now available, we have decided there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction and we are no longer proceeding with the case against Andrew Carroll.
"We have sent a letter explaining our decision to the victim."
Since he was charged with assault, Carroll pleaded guilty to a separate assault charge and was fined £1,000 after a drinker was hit in the face with a glass.
He was also picked by Fabio Capello to play for England, having already represented the under-21 side.
In his first season in the Premier League as a first team regular, Carroll has scored 10 times in 17 games.

Speed granted permission for talks over Wales job

Gary Speed today moved a step closer to becoming the new manager of Wales.
The current Sheffield United boss has been given permission by the Blades to speak to the Welsh FA with regard to the position.
It is understood the Welsh FA are likely to confirm Speed in the post tomorrow.
A statement from United read: "Sheffield United have given Gary Speed permission to speak to the Welsh FA with regard to the position of international manager, and a further statement is expected to be made on Tuesday.

"Meanwhile, coach John Carver will continue to take the Blades' training session today as normal."
Speed only stepped into club management in August, taking over at Bramall Lane from the sacked Kevin Blackwell despite no previous experience as a boss.
Speed boasts considerable pedigree as a player with Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton, prior to joining the Blades in the twilight of his career, as well as 85 appearances for Wales, a record for an outfield player.
But so far he has struggled to make the grade as a manager as he has won just six of 18 matches in charge of United who are just two places and one point above the npower Championship relegation zone.
Speed, though, has long been favourite for the vacant Wales job ahead of Chris Coleman, Brian Flynn, the current Under-21 boss who is also in temporary charge of the senior side, and former Sweden manager Lars Lagerback.
Despite United's poor form, Speed refused to use the speculation linking him to Wales as an excuse.
Following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, Speed said: "If you're weak-minded you can use that as an excuse, but I'm not using it as an excuse and the players certainly won't be using it as an excuse."
Speed's almost certain exit will now hasten United's bid for a new manager of their own ahead of the usually hectic Christmas and New Year period.

Inter target Capello and Rooney

Inter Milan could be plotting a double raid for England boss Fabio Capello and star striker Wayne Rooney, according to reports in Italy.
Current Inter boss Rafa Benitez is under pressure after a difficult start to his career at the San Siro that has left the club in a disappointing seventh in Serie A.
Speculation has been increasing that club president Massimo Moratti is rapidly losing patience with the former Liverpool chief and has identified Capello as the man to replace him - especially as he believes the FA would allow the Italian coach to leave for little compensation.
Now Italian website Tuttomercato is claiming that if Capello does take the reigns at Inter, he would try to persuade Wayne Rooney to leave Manchester United and join him at the European Champions.

Rooney only signed a new five-year deal at United in October, after previously stating publicly that he wanted to leave the club, but that will not stop Inter pursuing him in January, of they can first lure Capello back home.

Surgery D-Day looming for crocked King

Ledley King will discover this week if he is fit to return to action for Spurs - or undergo surgery that will rule him out until the end of January.
The Spurs skipper missed yesterday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea as he continues his recovery from the groin injury that has kept him out for 13 matches.
King has not played for Harry Redknapp's side since limping off at Fulham on October 16.
And the Spurs boss revealed D-Day on whether to put King under the knife again is likely to be reached by the end of the week and certainly by next Thursday.

Redknapp said: "Ledley is improving and he might be back soon.
"We have a date for Ledley to have an operation. The surgeon is available until December 23 but is then away for four weeks so we have to make a decision by then.
"He's coming on well. If he feels okay we will not operate. If he has to have it, it will be five weeks. But he's feeling good."
In King's continued absence, Redknapp was down to his last pair of experienced central defenders against Chelsea with Michael Dawson returning after more than three months out to partner Sebastian Bassong.
Redknapp lost William Gallas when he sustained a hamstring strain on training in Friday, while Jonathan Woodgate is still fighting to save his career and Younes Kaboul is recovering from the hip injury he picked up in the win over Liverpool two weeks ago.
While Dawson was out-muscled by Didier Drogba in the build-up to Chelsea's leveller, Redknapp said: "Michael did well. It's his first week back and I had to play him.
"I was hoping Kaboul would be fit, Gallas did his hamstring on Friday, so we had to throw Michael in. I was worried he wouldn't last the game and you have to be careful. He's done great, a fantastic competitor and an amazing fellow.
"Kaboul could be back next week. I don't know when Gallas will be back. He stretched for the ball and felt it tear.
"We've coped okay whoever has come in. Luckily we've got plenty of centre-halves who've done well."
Spurs were also without Jermaine Jenas, Tom Huddlestone and Rafael Van Der Vaart and Redknapp added there was another casualty.
"We're running out of midfield players," he said. "We've lost Tom and Jenas and now Wilson Palacios has done his ankle badly so we're down to Sandro and Luka Modric.
"But whoever comes in does the job and we're playing well. We're strong aren't we. We're lucky as we've got good players."

Dunne facing Villa axe after training ground bust-up

Gerard Houllier has given his Aston Villa squad two days off to clear their heads after Richard Dunne's stormy training ground bust-up.
The Irish defender, 31, was dropped and stripped of the captaincy for *Saturday's 2-1 win over West Brom at Villa Park.
And his clash last week with coach Gary *McAllister during an eight-a-side practice match has exposed simmering tensions towards Villa's new boss.
Houllier has been working his players extremely hard at their Bodymoor Heath HQ after taking over in September.

The squad's usual days off were scrapped as he introduced a tough new regime under French fitness coach Robert Duverne.
Villa's players have also been grumbling about several of Houllier's other methods.
Mobile phones are now banned at the training ground and the squad have even been asked to reduce non-football related chat at practice.
Houllier is also looking into where players live amid concerns many of his squad are travelling too far to play and train.
Stars such as Stephen Warnock still reside in the north-west near Liverpool while Ashley Young has moved back to *Hertfordshire.
But it is Dunne's *behaviour and form which are Houllier's biggest concern.
The defender clashed with McAllister last week during an eight-a-side game, resulting in the Irishman launching a massive tirade against Houllier's regime.
Villa are unlikely to be able to ship out Dunne in January as he has *two-and-a-half years remaining on a £52,000-a-week salary.
Houllier is considering leaving Young as captain in Stiliyan Petrov's absence after he was skipper against West Brom.

Bolton winning the race for Swans midfielder

Bolton boss Owen Coyle is ready to win the race for Swansea's Darren Pratley - but he is also happy to wait until he can sign him on a free in the summer.
Midfield powerhouse Pratley is quitting the Swans when his contract runs out at the end of the campaign and Wanderers have moved ahead of Newcastle and Wigan in the chase.
But Coyle is prepared to let Pratley join his club for nothing ahead of next season - rather than paying over the top to the promotion-chasing Welshmen.
Pratley is also content to see out the Championship push with Brendan Rodgers's team. They would price him out of a sale in the January market as they focus on that goal.

Allardyce determined to bag Scottish schemer Adam

Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is ready to make a bid for Blackpool's stylish Scot Charlie Adam - but he will have to pay £3 million for him.
Allardyce made a second personal check on midfield maestro Adam at the weekend and is still keen despite the chance to snap him up for nothing passing him by.
Adam lost his case for a free transfer on the grounds of a contract breach when he was not paid a survival bonus by the Seasiders last season.
However Allardyce is still on his trail, armed with cash from the new Indian owners. And the Rovers chief may test the water with an offer shortly, although Ian Holloway's club will be hard to budge.

The Rivers chief wants a play-maker, a speedy winger and a striker as he tries to build on the remarkable start to the campaign his side has had despite their previous financial hardship.

Fletcher vows to continue ruffling Arsenal's feathers

Darren Fletcher has warned Arsene Wenger that he won't stop putting the boot in on Arsenal.
The Manchester United midfielder was accused by Wenger of being "anti-football" when the Gunners were beaten at Old Trafford last season, with the Arsenal boss claiming that Fletcher had been allowed to systematically foul his players.
Fletcher will be the first name on Sir Alex Ferguson's team sheet when Wenger ventures back down Sir Matt Busby Way again tomorrow night.
And the man who succeeded Roy Keane as Fergie's on-field enforcer insists that he will not allow the Frenchman's whining to influence the way he goes about his business.

"What Arsene Wenger said about me won't be on my mind one little bit," said Fletcher.
"It was well documented last year what he thinks about me, but that's all gone now because things get said in the heat of the moment.
"I don't think I'm a dirty player – in fact, and I know I'm not a dirty player.
"I go to win the ball and sometimes you give away fouls doing that.
"But referees here use a lot of commonsense and they know when players are trying to win the ball or trying to hurt people.
"It's not malicious or dirty. It's all just part of the British game."
Fletcher has pinpointed Samir Nasri as the man United must stop if they are to extend their unbeaten Premier League run to 21 matches.
The French midfielder has scored 12 times already this season and Fletcher said: "Nasri is their form player now.
"He's come back after the summer obviously disappointed not to have been in the France squad for the World Cup and he's really looked determined.
"With Cesc Fabregas out, it seems Nasri has become Arsenal's main player. He has taken on the mantle of being the one to make things happen for them.
"He is creating things, he is scoring goals and he is a real danger to us. When opponents are in the type of form that Nasri is then you have to be wary of them."
Ferguson felt he needed to publicly defend Fletcher last said when the Scot began to regularly pick up yellow cards in the aftermath of Wenger's outburst.
It was a timely reminder that while the icy relationship between the United and Arsenal managers has thawed in recent years, their rivalry remains as intense as ever.
With United set to face champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next week, Fletcher said: "Things haven't changed with the manager. He still enjoys the challenge of the big games, pitting his wits against another top manager.
"I think the rivalry is still there with Arsene Wenger. They're two great managers at two massive clubs, so it will always be there.
"It might not seem be as intense as it used to be, but one incident might spark it off again because our manager is as determined as ever to be a winner."
"Arsenal are always a threat. Chelsea are the defending champions and have a lot of experience, but Arsenal are always there or thereabouts.
"They haven't been real title challengers for a couple of years now, but it is going to come together sooner rather than later because they are a top side and they have a lot of players gaining experience all the time.
"So we have to be wary of both Arsenal and Chelsea. I don't think you can say one is the bigger danger, so we must just concentrate on ourselves."
He added: "People might think these games are too early in the season to be *decisive in the title race but looking back on last year, the two Chelsea games proved to be very important.
"We didn't think we got the benefit of the doubt from the referee in both of those games and when big *decisions go against you in big games it can cost you the title.
"There were other games when we could have put that right and at the end of the day Chelsea deserved to win the league, but it just shows you that any slight mistakes or *misjudgements in these big games can cost you and that is why you want to win.
"That's why these games can be so *important. When you are at the top you don't want to lose any ground on your *rivals.
"We're not firing on all cylinders yet we are near the top of the league and we are unbeaten - and that says a lot about the squad and the determination we have."

Steven Nemes, Juma Shango, Alphonce Modesti, Mustaph Hoza, Geogre Masatu, Hussen Masha, Juma Amir, Salvatory Edward (nahodha), Said Mwamba, Nteze John na Edibily Lunyamila, Nico Bambaga.
