Five offers for City striker Jo

Updated Jan 9, 2011 7:16 PM ET
09/01/2011 21:46 +0100

The Brazilian striker has figured in Roberto Mancini's plans on a more regular basis this term, but remains on the fringes of the first-team picture at Eastlands. Having previously spent time on loan at Everton and Galatasaray, there are reports that he could be heading for the exits once more. Another short-term deal away from City has been touted, with a number of options said to be on the table. Greek giants Olympiakos were believed to be among those leading the hunt for the 23-year-old, keen to add him to their attacking arsenal. Jo's representative has ruled out such a switch, but admits there are a number of clubs away from England keen to strike a deal. "There is no option for Jo to go to Greece," Guliano Bertolucci told Greek website Sday. "He has played in most of the last few games at City and doesn't want to leave on loan. "Jo has five offers right now from clubs outside of England but he doesn't want to leave. "There is no offer from Olympiakos. We have offers from Spain, France and Russia."

Inter was never the right fit for Rafa

For many Inter fans, six months alone was too long for Rafa.

So, long Rafa.

Your short stay in Italy is over. This Christmas in Liverpool will certainly be chilly one.

After only six months, Inter Milan sacked the Spaniard, and it's easy to see why. Inter is a painful seventh in Serie A, and looks incapable at this time of catching up. What surely twists the knife is that their bitter rivals, AC Milan, are currently looking down upon them from the peak.

Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats Scores | Fixtures | Table | Stats

The fact is that Benitez was always an odd choice for Inter. It's not easy following a legend, and like it or not, Jose Mourinho is just that. Mourinho also was everything that Benitez is not -- garrulous, amusing, self-confident and willing to admit mistakes.

Benitez, in contrast to the Special One, seems perpetually on the defensive, nearly to the point of paranoia. He's clearly both smart and capable -- and I found him to be very amiable on the occasions I chatted with him -- but he has a knack for rubbing his employers the wrong way. His ill-advised use of the FIFA Club World Cup post-win press conference to lobby for his job was just the latest example of a deep-seated tone-deafness.

Before then there were signs of the increasing chill that his tenure had cast over the Nerazzurri. That coldness -- perhaps born of defensiveness -- has followed Benitez throughout his career.

Benitez was not a particularly gifted player (his youth colleagues at Real Madrid used to poke fun at him for his habit of note-taking even then) but he is keenly observant. There's no question he knows what a good player looks like. Benitez' weakness, well-displayed at Liverpool, is that once he gets that good player, he's not as good at getting them to actually play for him. Then, he disposes of them, for good or ill.

This fickleness left Liverpool with some sorry balance sheets. It was perhaps with that in mind that when Inter started this season, they sold far more talent than they brought in. Only two players, 'keeper Luca Castellazzi and forward Johnathan Biabiany, have made an impact, and the latter Inter already shared in a co-ownership deal with Parma. The talent that went out the door -- Mario Baliotelli, Ricardo Quaresma, Marko Arnautovic -- has not been replaced. Injuries to the likes of Wesley Sneijder could not be overcome.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

But in fairness, consider this. In his last two jobs Benitez had to deal with chaos above him, first at Liverpool with the mess created by Tom Hicks and George Gillett; and now at Inter with the imperious Massimo Moratti. Moratti has run through 13 coaches in thirteen years, an instability that makes the late George Steinbrenner look like a paragon of patience.

The difference is that Mourinho survived in that hothouse and won -- and everyone knows it. That Mourinho won the Champions League last year, then immediately decamped for Real Madrid, created a problem too big for almost anyone to solve. It was certainly too big for Benitez to inherit.

To his discredit, the stark fact is this -- Benitez's Inter won only six games in the league this season, one for every month of his tenure. That's nowhere near good enough.

Benitez seems a fascinating psychological case: is he a self-saboteur or a top-level manager damned by an incredible streak of bad luck?

At his next port of call, perhaps we'll finally find out.

rafa had a good coaching spree winning but then came the mess at liverpool. dont blame him for that but near the end it seemed he gave up letting whoever start. at inter. idk what happened. no excuse. he had the exact same team as jose mourinho had. to the tee. i think rafa just lost his touch and passion. anyone saying mourinho left cause he knew next season would be not as good is foolish. he left cause hes the kind of guy who wants to have his name remembered. he wants to win in every league.

TPink, Mourinho left because of Moratti..., period! He could've easily stayed and repeated (or, at least tried) the Treble, but had no real motivation. 13 managers in 13 years? Benitez would be better off taking on a Spanish or Portuguese club.

Chelsea07, I agree with you. Italian teams don't have the "let's-build-for-the-future" mentality. Serie A will never have an Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger!!! The only decent managers they had (Ancelotti, Capello, Mancini, and Trappatoni) all broke camp for brighter horizons (namely, England). While Benitez is too conservative in my opinion, he didn't have the same defensive strength as he had at Valencia, years ago. Moratti'll be manager-hunting again come July, guaranteed..., Leonardo doesn't have a clue, which is why he fit in, in Berlusconi's Milan (same as Ibrahimovic)...

And when you sell 3 expensive players of course you would expect to replace them with good ones. So why wouldn't Rafa expect this? He either should get the backing and buy in January or for sure his team would languish in 4-7th and he'd get fired in May after 4 months of second-guessing.
He dealt with that exact same situation last season in Liverpool where owners sold starting players, closed the purse-strings which shut the door on equal quality replacements, and then let the coach take the hit. Nice.

Now everyone knows why JM left last season. He had an amazing season and knew this one would not be as good. That creates expectations and issues with the owner, period. Rafa did not deal with management well, but frankly, after working for amateur owners which created a circus in Liverpool for 4 years he probably did not have enough patience to deal with another bizarre ownership situation at Inter. 13 coaches in 13 yrs! Now they hire an ex-AC Milan player?
Just makes me more amazed JM took the job in the first place!

Well at valencia he had a great team, had great defenders ayala, marchena, carboni, etc. and back then la liga could be won with 72-79 points unlike this season. Plus its easier for him to work with spanish players. I dont see any club in la liga that would want him, unless malaga decide to sack pellegrini and give the reigns to rafa, there he'll have all the money.

Simba pull crowd in Moroni

By DAILY NEWS Reporter/Agencies, 27th January 2011 @ 11:30, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 162

HUNDREDS of soccer fans in Moroni, Comoros are flocking at the training ground to have a glimpse of Mainland Champions Simba players, who are in the island for the CAF Champions League assignment.

Simba will face hosts Elan Club de Mitsoudje on Sunday and according to a Tanzanian businessman living in Moroni, Abdallah Mazrui, the match has already become the talk of the town.

“I was shocked to see the way fans here are eager to follow Simba training sessions. Some seems to know Simba players very well. I bet it is because there is a close link between the two nations in terms of business. Traders from Comoros frequently visit Dar es Salaam, likewise we from Tanzania,” he said.

He said such players as Juma Kaseja, Musa Hassan ‘Mgosi’, Mohamed Banka and Emmanuel Okwi are well known in the island. Simba arrived in Moroni, safely on Wednesday but the players are reportedly battling with chilly weather condition.

However, Coach Patrick Phiri is adamant that his players will cope in time ahead of their crucial Champions League game.

The 2011 CAF Champions League kick starts this weekend with the preliminary round of matches, but it is the away encounters involving four former champions that tops the billing.

Five-time winners Zamalek of Egypt, Nigeria’s Enyimba, Club Africain of Tunisia and MC Algiers of Algeria begin their campaigns with away clashes against Kenya’s Ulinzi Stars, Saint Michel of Congo, Rwanda champions APR and Real de Bangui of Central African Republic respectively.

For a competition synonymous with surprises, the giants face uphill tasks in their quest to cement their place amongst the top brass of African club football, against clubs eyeing similar ambitions in the not too distant future.

With off-colour performances in the recent past, the quartet have been afforded yet another opportunity to make a claim for their place on the ladder with their eyes fixed on halting the dominance of DR Congo outfit, TP Mazembe.

Zamalek, who last tasted continental glory in 2002 appear to be on a renaissance backed by stellar performances in the Egyptian league under the technical guidance of former Pharaohs captain Hossam Hassan.

Sitting atop the standings after the first half of the season, the White Knights look a tall mountain for the Kenyan debutants, who stunned all to emerge champions in their local championships last season.

Zamalek look impregnable with star player Shikabala at his best this season and certainly the clash will bring Nairobi to a standstill. Despite being the underdogs, Benjamin Nyangwese, head coach of Kenya military team have rated his charges high and insist upsetting the Cairo giants is not above their limit.

“On the pitch it would be 11 against 11. So we cannot be cowed by Zamalek, despite their pedigree and rich history in the sport. This will be a different ball game and we are ready for the challenge.

“On Saturday, we will go for nothing less than a win, then hope for a draw when we travel to Cairo for the return leg two weeks later,” Nyangwese told Cafonline.com.

Whilst the quartet are battling away from their bases, three others namely; ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire and Moroccan duo, Raja Athletic Casablanca and Wydad Athletic Club will be at home to ASC Snim (Mauritania), Tourbillon (Chad) and debutants Aduana Stars (Ghana) respectively.

In other matches, AS FAN of Niger face Ivorian side JCAT in Niamey, Gabonese champions Union Sportive de Bitam slug it out Astres Douala of Cameroon, East End Lions of Sierra Leone versus Djoliba of Mali whilst Senegal’s ASC Jaraaf lock horns with Port Authority of Gambia.

Youngsters thrilled by opportunity to play soccer abroad

By ABDALLAH MSUYA, 28th January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 91

TANZANIAN soccer youngsters Salum Bakari and Khomeni Abubakar could not hide their delight as they embarked on their final preparations before jetting off to Qatar to attend the grand finals of Aspire Football Dreams, the world's largest-ever scouting programme in football.

The promising soccer stars are set to leave the country this afternoon for Doha, the capital of the rapidly football developing Arabic nation aboard Qatar Airways for the trials set to last for one month.

"I thank God for this opportunity. It's a fantastic opportunity for me and I am really excited,'' Bakari said and added:

"I have worked hard every week waiting for the opportunity, thanks God that I have made it, I know this could not be without God's blessing, I always put him ahead." Young Bakari who hails from the Zanzibar Islands vowed to grab the chance with both hands, "I will make sure that I work even harder to impress the trainers out there."

On his side, Khomeni had this to say, "It is such a golden chance that never comes twice. I'm more than ready for the challenge."

Bakari, the budding sensational midfielder and eagle eyed shot-stopper Abubakar were among the most talented youngsters selected from the East African region to join Aspire Academy last year.

Others were Kenyan Augustus Mukaisi and Rwandan Blaise Itangishaka. The highly rated upcoming stars were discovered after intensive review and consultations by a team of Aspire Academy scouts which traversed the East African region in search of budding talent.

They will meet other players, born between 1994 and 1996, from Thailand, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Vietnam, Paraguay, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda to train with and play against each other.

While there, the boys will enjoy a three-week long trial and condensed training programme, including friendly games against Aspire football students and the youth teams of some European top clubs.

In addition, they will benefit from Aspire's sports science facilities. These include hi-tech equipment, physical tests, fitness tests, scanning and medical treatments. Aspire's football coaching staff will work hand-in-hand with the programme's scouts and country co-ordinators.

The boys will train and play under the watchful eyes of the coaching staff, who will introduce them to the latest coaching methods and techniques.

At the end of programme, the Academy's football experts will nominate at least three of the boys to be granted full scholarship to the Academy.

Those nominated and if willing to do so, will be sent to Aspire's football academy in Senegal. Khomeni had an uplifting message for fellow youngsters; ''They need to work hard in training and follow instructions from their coaches."

The duo will be accompanied by the Aspire Africa country co-ordinator, Eugene Mwasamaki at the finals.

"This is good for them because if they succeed, Aspire will find them team in Europe. Apart from that during their scholarship programme, their parents will be offered 2,400 US dollars per year."

The two become the first youngster from Tanzania to secure a move to Aspire Academy for sports excellence in Qatar branch.

Mwasamaki said the youngsters' success was a great achievement for the Aspire programme and a boost to youth football development initiatives in the country, hence he challenged parents to allow their children take part in the programme in the future.

The Aspire programme started in 2007 and runs in 15 different countries throughout Asia, South America and Africa, with two high class soccer academies in Qatar and Senegal.

And, campaigns against malaria will feature prominently during the Tanzania Gospel Music Awards 2009/2010, scheduled to take place on February 27th at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Dar es Salaam.

The event is organized by Tanzania Gospel Music Promoters (TGMP). Nominees for the event, which is designed to celebrate and award excellence in the gospel music industry in Tanzania, will be made public on February 17 after the screening process, organizers said on Friday.

FORMER Tanzania Standard Newspapers employee and now upcoming fashion designer, Caroline Uliwa on Thursday evening showcased her ‘tight stilettos' collection for the first time.

In an occasion that coincided with preliminary Chinese New Year celebrations, Uliwa gave a well attended audience a time worthwhile when she unveiled numerous dresses and gowns blended in kitenge fabric.

Her collection clearly showed that she has a lot of potential in the industry and said after the event that she decided to venture into fashion because she felt she could do it as well as encouraging others that when you set your mind into something, it can be done.

The night was however stolen by Diana Magesa, one of Tanzania's most original fashion designers and one with loads of creativity and isn't shy to play with her imagination.

In 2009, Magesa showcased her designs at Miss Universe Tanzania, where her creativity and professionalism was instrumental in positioning the pageant in promoting Tanzanian beauty, creativity and art.

Magesa went on to design national costumes for the winners that took part in Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International and her design for Miss Earth won the Best in National Costume, a first in Tanzania in the history of Miss Earth.

She presented an exclusive collection of 12 outfits, two of which included fabrics from China, inspired by Chinese style and couture.

For those fortunate enough to have been at the first Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski showcase of 2011, they got the rare opportunity of enjoying Chinese folk art, the Lion Dance and an exciting presentation of Tai Chi.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Liu Xinsheng explained to the ‘Daily News on Saturday' that on February 3 this year, they would be marking the Year of the Rabbit and would be celebrating it for 15 days.

"We are planning a grand celebration at the Mnazi Mmoja Grounds which will have many performances that will be open to all," he said.

The Lion Dance, also known as Playing Lion, is a traditional sport activity and a folk art that imitates the movements of lions.

In China, people believe that the lion is an auspicious animal and that Lion Dance would bring them good luck and happiness.

Usually the dance is part of festivities like Chinese New Year, the openings of restaurants and weddings.

The Lion Dance was presented by Tanzanians, from the Tanzania Martial Arts Association and performed with much pomp and pageantry, accompanied with sounds of firecrackers and gongs and drums.

Tai chi, a traditional Chinese martial art, practiced for both its defence training and its health benefits, was presented by a group of practicing Chinese medical doctors resident in Tanzania.

CHANETA, CHANEZA meet to end crisis

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 28th January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 26

THE Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (CHANETA) and their Zanzibar counterparts, CHANEZA, have finally agreed to meet on Monday to discuss their long time differences.

CHANETA Chairperson, Anna Bayi said on Fridaythat CHANEZA have confirmed to attend the meeting in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

"We will let the public know on the outcome of the meeting, which I' am sure everything will be discussed," she said. The two netball bodies have been at loggerheads as either side blames the other for the resultant situation.

CHANEZA through Bakari has been blaming CHANETA chairperson Anna Bayi and her leadership for poor cooperation, especially when it comes to matters involving international netball activities.

The National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports instructed the two parties to conduct a joint meeting to discuss the situation and come up with amicable solutions.

On its side CHANETA has been blaming CHANEZA for failure to respond to various invitations including sending players for the national team for various international events.

But, their Isles counterparts always attributed that to poor communication from the Mainlanders.

The situation has resulted to CHANEZA failure to bring representatives for various meetings and competition.

Among the issues that will likely to be key on the agenda is the country's participation in the All Africa Games in Mozambique as well as discussing all resolutions passed during the Confederation of Netball Associations in Africa, CANA, conference held in Maputo last year.

‘Golden Boot' race heats up

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 27th January 2011 @ 11:30, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 74

THE race for the ‘Golden Boot', which is awarded to the top flight's highest goal scorer, is getting hotter as Kagera Sugar striker Gaudence Mwaikimba once again found the net in his team's 1-1 draw against JKT Ruvu to move joint top scorer.

In a closely fought game staged at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, midfielder Mwinyi Kazimoto put JKT Ruvu ahead early in the 55th minute, but red hot Mwaikimba scored a last gasp equaliser to earn Kagera Sugar another valuable point away from home.

This was their fifth point in their previous three games on the road. The results saw Kagera Sugar miss out on an opportunity to leapfrog their brothers Mtibwa Sugar in fourth position, but succeeded to maintain their fifth place after reaching 22 points, two behind Mtibwa, while JKT Ruvu remained sixth on the table with 21 points.

The strike was Mwaikimba's ninth of the season, and only ignited the race for the golden boot.

He is now leading the way in the scoring chart alongside Azam FC's Mrisho Ngasa , who has also bagged nine goals so far.

It is an interesting battle between the diminutive free-scoring Ngasa and the towering goal poacher Mwaikimba, and with about eight games remaining it is very difficult to predict who will finish up the race on top.

The former Young Africans flop has been converted into a scoring force at Kagera and is looking to go head on with Ngasa in the battle for top scorer tag.

On the other hand, Ngasa, the 2008/2009 top scorer and currently the most expensive player in local football scenes, bagged a brace in Wednesday's 5-1 demolition of AFC.

The former Yanga wing wizard, who moved to Azam for a record 58m/- transfer fee, is looking in good shape and back to his best after a slow start to his Azam career.

The two former teammates are seemingly the top dogs, but John Bocco and new Yanga striker Davis Mwape are hot on their heels with six and five goals respectively.

While Bocco helped himself with two goals on Wednesday to take his tally to six goals, Mwape bagged three goals in Yanga's 6-1 win over AFC and continued with his goal exploit with a brace against Polisi Dodoma on Monday

Yanga imeizidi Simba mchezo mmoja.

Nayo KMKM leo ni nafasi nzuri kwake kuhakikisha inapata ushindi mnono ambao utakuwa hazina kubwa zitakaporudiana wiki mbili zijazo nchini DRC.
