Tevez ready for United return

Carlos Tevez is not concerned about the prospect of being jeered on Saturday when he returns to Old Trafford with Manchester City.
Once a favourite at Manchester United, he is now an inspirational figure in manager Roberto Mancini's ambitious side.

A first-half hat-trick against West Brom on Saturday took his tally for the season to 20 goals.
It sets the Argentina striker up nicely for the derby, especially as the gap between the two sides is down to five points with the leaders losing to Wolves.
He told ZOO magazine he was not worried about getting plenty of stick at the ground he used to grace.
He said: "I don't care about people booing me at Old Trafford. It doesn't worry me and I'm not worried about going there.
"The booing happened a lot last year, but I understand. As a supporter, you defend your club and I am on the opposing team now.
"Manchester United fans can never say I didn't give my all during the time I was there. Maybe many supporters still don't understand the reason I left.
"I am a professional footballer and being booed when I am on the field is a price I have to pay sometimes. But it won't affect me at all.
"Derby games are always beautiful. I enjoyed them in Argentina and Brazil but, in England, they are extra-special.
"Playing against Manchester United is a big incentive but it's not just because of personal issues for me. It's about the importance of three points. We want to go to Old Trafford and win."
Even though Tevez would be thrilled with a victory, he wants City to overcome the league's lesser lights as well in their pursuit of a Champions League place.
He said: "We already have our best side in many years. But it's not just about playing United and winning. It's important to win our games at home.
"We cannot afford to lose games in which, theoretically, we are the favourites. Those are the matches when a title gets lost, not in the one-off big games against our rivals."
Tevez added: "The players are giving everything for each other. That unity is the key to success on the field.
"This is not a team based around individuals - this is a team that works together."

United were beaten 2-1 at Molineux on Saturday, a result that ended their hopes of going through the entire Premier League season unbeaten.
Toure, whose City side go to Old Trafford this weekend, was part of the Arsenal side that went through the 2003/04 campaign without tasting defeat.
And he believes that United now face a stern examination of their credentials after recalling how Arsenal struggled when their run eventually ended with a defeat to Sir Alex Ferguson's men.
He said: "When you're on a good run like that and you lose, everything becomes harder. It shakes your confidence. Maybe that can happen to them. It was difficult to lose that game.
"The circumstances were hard because they got a penalty, which we didn't think was a penalty. For us, it was really difficult to lose to United. I think it's a great chance for me to get my revenge.
"I have spent most of my career in England battling United, first at Arsenal, now at City. They are always at the top. Now we have new players, we are capable of fighting against them and that has been shown with our results against them over the last 18 months."

Torres: It 'looked black' at Reds

Updated Feb 8, 2011 6:19 AM ET
Fernando Torres has admitted he was lacking enthusiasm at Liverpool and that things "looked black" before he joined Chelsea.

And although he concedes he has joined a "smaller club", he believes it was a move he needed to reignite his love of the game.
The 26-year-old told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser: "Money was not important. I left to improve sporting-wise.
"I thought I would stay one more year and take it as a transition season.
"But a time comes when you lose enthusiasm, you see those in the Spanish national team are playing at a different level.
"Then when everything looked black, Chelsea came and showed a real interest."
Torres is nevertheless grateful to his former club.
"Liverpool will always be very special to me," he added.
"Because of its history, Liverpool is a bigger club but it's going through a difficult time.
"Chelsea is like Manchester United, the strongest over the last 10 years.
"One is not better than the other, I'm just happy to have had the fortune of playing for both of them.
"I have been pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere in the Chelsea changing room. I thought it would be more distant but the atmosphere is very good, they laugh, they joke. It's nice."
Torres is currently back in Madrid preparing for Spain's friendly with Colombia at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night and he admits it is nice to be leaving all the transfer talk behind for a short period.
"These past 10 days have been very intense and it still is," Torres said.
"Everything has gone so quickly and it's as though I have a lot of information in my head.
"It seems that a month has gone by instead of a week.
"I want to enjoy playing with the national team because we are champions of everything.
"This game is good for me to disconnect."

Reina won't rule out United move

Updated Feb 8, 2011 5:40 AM ET
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has refused to rule out a summer move to bitter Premier League rivals Manchester United.
United are considering their goalkeeping options as they seek a replacement for Edwin van der Sar when the Dutchman retires at the end of the season.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

Reina has been mooted as a possible transfer target after establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe during his time at Liverpool.
He told Spanish radio station Ondo Sera: "Yes, well van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so of course they are looking. I can't do anything. I can't say anything logically as I have a contract with Liverpool.
"Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that. We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title. But unfortunately it hasn't been the case in the last couple of years."
Former Barcelona and Villarreal custodian Reina has left the door open to quit Anfield if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
He added: "I won't lie, I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles."

Bendtner: I'm worth it

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has insisted he deserves his reported £52,000-a-week pay packet.
The 23-year-old, who has started just one match for the Gunners this season, claims he is worth every penny of his salary because he misses out on other pleasures in life - such as skiing.

The Danish frontman said: "I believe I'm worth what is coming my way. I pay a big price with my body, my time and with never being able to have privacy when I am out.
"I don't complain about that. It's a part of being a professional footballer but it's definitely a price to pay.
"Again, I am not complaining but I love to go on a skiing holiday but as long as I have my career I can't do that because of the risk of injury."
Bendtner, who is set to face England in Wednesday's friendly, also revealed he will consider his future at the Emirates at the end of the season.
He said: "I will play this season to the end as an Arsenal player and then make a decision on my status in the summer."

Aston Villa are hoping the signings made during January will help convince winger Ashley Young his long-term future is with the club.
Young has only 17 months of his contract remaining and has put any possible thoughts about a new deal on hold until the summer.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

He has been linked with the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Tottenham - but assistant manager Gary McAllister hopes the capture of Darren Bent and Jean Makoun last month for £30million will show Young he can realise his ambitions at Villa.
The Scot explained: "The conversations with the chairman (Randy Lerner) and the manager were along the lines that nobody Gerard Houllier wants to keep is leaving. Simple as that.
"Come the end of the season, we just need to wait and see what happens then.
"But throughout the transfer window, there was nobody the manager wanted to keep being allowed to leave."
McAllister admitted: "Right across the board, the players are very powerful.
"It's not a case of players abusing that system. But in the past it was the owners (who had the power) and it has shifted now.
"Will it be a triumph to keep Young next season? Absolutely and hopefully by the signings we have made, we can convince our top players to want to be here.
"That is what the manager and chairman are searching to do. They want us to be competitive right at the top end of the league."

Kenwright backs 'sensible' Toffees

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright claims the club's latest financial accounts demonstrate "sensible business management" last season.
The Toffees released figures covering the period from June 1 2009 to May 31 2010, revealing that £79.1million of turnover was generated, offset by operating costs of £79.6million.
This resulted in an operating loss before player trading of £0.5million.

Investment in the squad saw operating expenses increase from £73.4million in 2009, with a profit of £19million from player sales - raised primarily by Joleon Lescott's move to Manchester City - used to bring in the likes of Sylvain Distin, John Heitinga and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.
The loan signing of Landon Donovan and renegotiated contracts for Louis Saha, Tim Howard, Jack Rodwell, Joseph Yobo and Phil Jagielka also made an impact as manager David Moyes guided the 2009 FA Cup finalists to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League.
Kenwright told Everton's website: "In modern football, the difference between success and failure can be wafer-thin.
"Yes, those clubs fortunate enough to boast a rich and generous benefactor undoubtedly have a clearly defined advantage but the outcome of crucial matches are quite often decided not by the size of the bank balance but more by skill, good fortune or the whim of a referee.
"From a financial perspective, the year was one which was underpinned by sensible business management which enabled us to continue to do everything within our collective power to help the manager in his concerted efforts to build a squad which would challenge the top four.
"Turnover for the year of £79.1million represented a decrease of £0.6million on the previous year, £79.7million, a figure which was boosted by our progress through to the FA Cup final.
"Irrespective of their standing within the various leagues, clubs will invariably be judged on two things - performance and level of support.
"Our average attendance for Premier League games at Goodison Park rose to almost 37,000 during the course of the last campaign, a statistic which delights me but does not surprise me simply because we are fortunate enough to boast the most loyal and knowledgeable crowd in British football."
Everton's average attendance increased from 35,667 to 36,729 and season ticket numbers went up from 23,717 to 25,671, a rise of 8%, generating £19.2million.
Broadcast revenue increased to £50.2million due to the club's share of the centralised revenue deal from the Europa League, although domestic broadcast revenue was down. This was due to 13 domestic games being broadcast live in contrast to 17 in the previous season.
Commercial, sponsorship and merchandising revenue increased to £7.1million.

Walcott: We were wary of Wenger

Updated Feb 7, 2011 6:45 PM ET
Theo Walcott has admitted he did not dare look Arsene Wenger in the eye after Arsenal threw away a four-goal lead at Newcastle on Saturday.
Walcott claimed the Magpies taught the Gunners a lesson at St James' Park as Abou Diaby's dismissal provided the trigger for one of the most astounding top-flight comebacks of all time.

Not until the Gunners' squad left their charter flight in Luton and discovered Manchester United had lost at Wolves was some kind of perspective put on the performance, the gap to the leaders actually narrowing to four points.
Before that, Walcott and his team-mates thought the wise option was to stay out of a clearly furious Wenger's way.
"None of us wanted to look the boss in the eye," said the winger. "It was such a disappointment.
"When you are 4-0 up and want to win the league, it shouldn't happen, even if you have a man sent off.
"Newcastle taught us a lesson. They showed us how to play against 10 men. We are known for keeping the ball. On Saturday we didn't."
Manchester United's result did raise spirits. Enough for Walcott to tune in for a memorable Match of the Day, believing some of Wenger's anger would have been eased by the knowledge his side are still the Red Devils' closest title challengers, a position Chelsea's defeat to Liverpool on Sunday only reinforced.
"When we landed at Luton, we all put on our phones and had a little check," revealed Walcott.
"Everybody had grins on their faces. It changed the mood. It changed the boss' mood as well.
"He would have gone home thinking it was a point gained and something we can build on.
"The first half performance was the best I have been involved in.

"I watched it again on Match of the Day. I couldn't change the result and I didn't want to sulk. I wanted to see my goal as well."
Walcott is convinced the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie can provide the character that will steer Arsenal through the turbulence.
Always happy to look on the optimistic side, the former Southampton star genuinely looks on the weekend as a step forward rather than a massive opportunity missed.
Indeed, after winning nothing during his time with the Gunners, Walcott has a growing belief this will be the season Wenger's side finally etch another year onto the trophy recordings which adorn their impressive stadium.
Second in the Premier League table, an FA Cup fifth round trip to Leyton Orient looming, a Carling Cup final with Birmingham after that, not to mention that eagerly-awaited Champions League double-header with Barcelona. Little wonder there is a gleam in Walcott's eye as he discusses the possibility of ending a six-year wait for some Arsenal silverware.
"I definitely think this is our best chance of winning some silverware," he said.
"We haven't won trophies for a long time. This is the year we need to.
"So many of the other England players have medals. It would be nice to be part of that.
"When I look at the finals and see them lifting up the trophies, I want to be there as well."
So much so that, when pushed, Walcott openly admits he doesn't really care what shape the trophy he collects is. He just wants one.
"The league would be massive," he said.
"It's the hard work over the whole season. You have so many games and have to go through so many ups and downs. That would be the biggest one to win. I want that one.
"But really, anything will do. Just to win something and break down that disappointing five years without anything.
"That is why the Carling Cup is a great fixture for us."

Theo Walcott is out to help Fabio Capello prove he has learned from his World Cup "mistake" as England prepare for their first game of 2011.
Capello hinted at regret over Walcott's omission from his squad for the summer showpiece, a quote Walcott admits has helped to inspire his impressive start to the season.
The Arsenal winger will line up against Denmark on Wednesday and acknowledged: "It's a nice quote and that's helped me out so much this season, it's shown that the manager's taken responsibility for what he did.

"I had a good pre-season and started the season brightly, it's always nice when the manager's got faith in you - even though I didn't go to the World Cup.
"I've had ups and downs in my career so far and I felt needed that mental break from it all so it might have done me a favour.
"It was his decision to make and I respected it. It's helped me out so much this season, having that break and those quotes from the manager as well."
Walcott was buoyed after discussing the decision with Capello and said: "I wanted to know why I didn't go and I had a conversation with him, he's a manager you can approach.
"It's got my mind at ease, I can build on the manager's belief in me and I think I need to start believing in myself - which I have, my performances have been better this season.
"It's going to put a smile on your face if the manager's thinking (it's) a mistake he made, it's great for a player. I want to help him and prove he was wrong, I want to play well for England and hopefully make his job easier.
"It happened and you can't change it now, I've tried to prove people wrong this season about what I can do."
Walcott has not scored for England since a memorable hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Croatia in Zagreb in September 2008 and said: "I think I need to grab a goal, I haven't got a goal since the Croatia moment.
"It's always nice to get goals but when you get the performances as well, it's great to be in a winning team even if you're not scoring.
"My shooting boots have been on for Arsenal and hopefully on Wednesday night I can grab a goal or an assist or something and get some more confidence."
Michael Dawson is hoping for a chance to show Capello he can make a big contribution for the national team.
Dawson, 27, would surely have more than the two caps he has to his name were it not for ill-timed injuries, including the one that saw him stretchered off less than an hour into his first competitive England appearance - against Bulgaria.
With Rio Ferdinand missing from Capello's squad, Dawson sees a chance to stake a claim.
"I don't tend to set too many targets, what will be will be," he said.
"When I walk on the training pitch I give it my all and it's the same on the pitch. Hopefully that's enough.
"It's great to be part of the England squad, and hopefully I will get my chance on Wednesday.
"You will have to ask the manager who will play.
"JT (John Terry), Gary Cahill, Joleon Lescott, they are all good players and will want to do well."
Dawson featured in an inexperienced central defensive pairing when he started against Bulgaria, playing alongside Phil Jagielka.
Terry is expected to start on Wednesday, and Dawson is eager to learn from the vastly-experienced Chelsea captain.
"Myself and Jags, when we played against Bulgaria there were not too many caps between us, but we went out there and after 60 minutes we were feeling very comfortable until I got my injury.
"But JT has been in and around this for many years and he's a top class player."

BERLIN (AP)

Wolfsburg sacked its English coach Steve McClaren on Monday, with the club battling against relegation from the Bundesliga.
"We were no longer convinced that we could finish the season with stability by working together with Steve McClaren," the Wolfsburg general manager Dieter Hoeness said on the club's website.

"We tried it together until the last day. Unfortunately we have now lost the belief in success."
Assistant coach Pierre Littbarski is to take control of team affairs, the club said.
Wolfsburg, the 2009 champion, is currently 12th in the German league with 23 points, one point above the relegation zone.
The club lost 1-0 at Hannover at the weekend, and has won just once in its last 11 league games. It was also eliminated from the German Cup, losing 3-1 at home to second-division side Energie Cottbus in December.
Former England coach McClaren was lured from FC Twente last year after he won the Dutch championship.
McClaren had two successful years in Enschede after a dismal record as manager of England during its failed effort to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.
The 49-year-old McClaren was manager of Middlesbrough for five seasons before taking charge of England, winning the club's first ever trophy with victory in the 2004 League Cup final.
His is the fifth manager to lose his job in the Bundesliga this season, with Stuttgart responsible for two after the sackings of Christian Gross and his replacement, Jens Keller. Cologne fired Zvonimir Soldo in October and Hoffenheim parted ways with Ralf Rangnick in January.
Littbarski's first game in charge is at home to eighth-place Hamburger SV on Saturday.

German Bundesliga Roundup, Feb. 6

Updated Feb 6, 2011 2:08 PM ET
No goals were scored in the Bundesliga Sunday when Freiburg drew 0-0 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and the derby between Hamburger SV and St. Pauli was called off.
Freiburg's Papiss Demba Cisse and Frankfurt's Fanis Gekas, the league's second and third-highest goalscorers respectively, both missed chances to add to their goal tally this season.

Freiburg remains sixth, 17 points behind leader Borussia Dortmund on 51, and two behind Bayern Munich in fifth. Frankfurt is 10th.
Patrick Ochs had the game's first chance in the 22nd minute, when the Frankfurt captain's volley was deflected for a corner by Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Gekas was set free by a hopeful ball forward in the 39th when he could have shot on goal. Instead he passed to Caio, who failed to control the ball and the chance was lost.
Ochs should have scored before the interval when he had plenty of time and space but clipped Sebastian Jung's perfect cross over the cross bar from 10 meters (yards).
Freiburg improved after the break, and Cedric Makiadi finally sparked the home fans into life when his long-range effort was narrowly over in the 57th.
Gekas was unable to direct his header under the bar after a wonderful long cross from Georgios Tzavellas in the 64th.
Cisse missed at the other end minutes later, when his header from Felix Bastians' free kick was narrowly wide of the right post.
Baumann's fingertips deflected a looping Maik Franz effort onto the crossbar and out for a corner. Franz tried to rouse his teammates for the last 10 minutes, but neither side could find a winner.
"It's OK, but I'd rather have the win," Franz said.
The Hamburg derby was called off late Saturday because of a waterlogged pitch.

Forty-one goals flew in on a record-shattering Premier League Saturday that also saw Manchester United's unbeaten streak come to a crashing halt.
Arsenal were victims either of the greatest comeback in league history - or staged the greatest collapse - while Manchester City strolled to a comfortable win and cemented their grip on third. And on Sunday, Chelsea lost for the seventh time this season to a resurgent Liverpool, 1-0 at home, a defeat that may effectively end their title defense dreams.

Take your pick: the story of the weekend was the goals. They were everywhere. Take Tim Howard's Everton, which downed Blackpool 5-3 in a wild game that saw an unstoppable Louis Saha score four and have a fifth incorrectly waved off. Or, look at Wigan, which edged Jermaine Jones' Blackburn 4-3 in a muddy thriller that took the Latics out of the drop zone. How about Stoke, which recovered from a 2-1 deficit thanks to two late goals by Robert Huth - and two grievous errors by Craig Gordon - to win out 3-2?
Or, maybe the story of the weekend was Newcastle, which recovered from a 4-0 drubbing at halftime to draw Arsenal 4-4 in a season-saving performance. Arsenal fans are rightly furious with ref Phil Dowd, who inexplicably allowed Joey Barton to stay on the field after he delivered a vicious, flying tackle on Abou Diaby, while sending Diaby off for pushing the Newcastle man to the turf.
They're also rightly furious that he blew a penalty kick call - awarding Newcastle a very soft second spot kick - and waved off a good Robin van Persie goal. But Arsenal fans had better look at what passes for a defense and again ask themselves what a club with a legit shot at the title is doing. Arsenal were 4-0 up thanks to a mesmerizing performance by Theo Walcott and van Persie that should have had the Gunners on easy street. But it all fell apart after Diaby was tossed, Barton sank two from the spot, and Cheik Tiote blasted home one of the goals of the season. In the end, Arsenal were lucky to escape with the point.
Or, perhaps, the story of the weekend was Manchester United losing to dead-last Wolverhampton 2-1 to snap their unbeaten streak at 29 and give chasers Arsenal, City and Chelsea hope of staying in the race for the crown. United came out firing with Nani scoring a gorgeous goal after just three minutes that should have had the league leaders rolling. Instead, Wolves played United to a standstill, leveling matters through George Elokobi's first-ever Premier League goal, then snatching the win thanks to Kevin Doyle. It was a humbling night for a clearly enraged Sir Alex Ferguson, and the loss was further marred by two examples of unusually unsporting behavior on the Red Devils' part: Paul Scholes blatantly punched a ball into the net when it became obvious he could not get to it in time, while Ryan Giggs committed two bad fouls late in the game out of sheer frustration.
Elsewhere, Carlos Tevez scored a cool hat-trick as Manchester City downed a sad West Bromwich Albion side. Following the loss, WBA sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo. Clint Dempsey got the equalizer as Michael Bradley had to wait for his Aston Villa debut in a 2-2 draw and Tottenham escaped with a 2-1 win despite Rafael van der Vaart missing a penalty kick to tip Stuart Holden's sliding Bolton side.
Sunday, West Ham dropped another, losing a drab 1-0 affair to Birmingham while Liverpool produced a defense-first show that blunted Chelsea, then grabbed the 69th minute winner from Raul Meireles.

In Spain, Barcelona set a record with a 16th straight win with a comprehensive 3-0 dismantling of Atletico Madrid. With the win, Barcelona shattered a 50-year old record set by arch-rivals Real Madrid. Lionel Messi produced his third hat trick of the season and moved his total to 40 goals in 33 games this year, with 24 of them coming in just 19 league games for the Catalans. Still think he's not player of the year?
Cristiano Ronaldo had a reply Sunday with two goals in Real Madrid's 4-1 whipping of Sociedad to tie up the golden boot race with Messi, but his team remains looking up forlornly in second, a full seven points back. Kaka and new boy Emannuel Adebayor added to the haul. Third-placed Villarreal were shocked by Levante 1-0 to end the Submarine's unbeaten home record.
In Germany, Cologne produced a stunning comeback courtesy of Milivoje Novakovic to shock Bayern Munich 3-2 and drop the Bavarians for the first time in two months. With Mainz drawing against Werder Bremen and Steve Cherundolo's Hannover getting a key win over Wolfsburg, Bayern fell further off the pace. Leverkusen couldn't gain however, as they were pegged back by Nurnberg 1-0.
The pace setter, of course, is Dortmund, who were in turn dealt a rude hand Friday when they were held to a scoreless draw by Schalke. No matter: they still lead by 12 points. The much-anticipated Hamburg-St. Pauli derby had to be postponed Sunday after heavy rain.
In Italy, Napoli gained ground after they downed Cesena 2-0 to close the gap atop Serie A. With AC Milan able only to muster a 1-1 draw at Genoa, Milan's lead was slashed to just three points. Lazio couldn't take similar advantage, only mustering a 1-1 draw with Chievo, while Udinese kept up with a 2-0 win over Sampdoria. Palermo won a wild match over Lecce 4-2.
In France, Lille were held by Auxerre 1-1, but Paris Saint-Germain couldn't capitalize, losing to Rennes 1-0 and a Yacine Brahimi goal in the 19th minute. Marseille, however, could and did, getting a 1-0 win over a truly wretched Arles side 1-0. Arles has only one win this season to their name and have a paltry 8 points from 22 matches.
Carlos Bocanegra's St. Etienne beat Montpellier on the road 2-1 in an encounter that saw the American captain carded; Sochaux of course loaned Charlie Davies to D.C. United midweek, then lost 1-0 to Nice.
In Scotland, Maurice Edu's Rangers and Celtic battled to a 2-2 draw, setting up an FA Cup replay and ensuring that there will be seven Old Firm clashes this season. Cup holders Dundee United marched on in the FA Cup with an easy 3-1 win over Hamilton Academical.

Forty-one goals flew in on a record-shattering Premier League Saturday that also saw Manchester United’s unbeaten streak come to a crashing halt.

Take Tim Howard’s Everton, which downed Blackpool 5-3 in a wild game that saw an unstoppable Louis Saha score four and have a fifth incorrectly waved off. Or, look at Wigan, which edged Jermaine Jones’ Blackburn 4-3 in a muddy thriller that took the Latics out of the drop zone. How about Stoke, which recovered from a 2-1 deficit thanks to two late goals by Robert Huth - and two grievous errors by Craig Gordon - to win out 3-2?
