Spurs losing hope of landing Parker

Harry Redknapp wants to bolster his midfield during the transfer window – but says Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would have to change his policy to land Scott Parker from West Ham.
Redknapp insisted that there had been no contact with West Ham about Parker.
"We haven't made any move for him," said Redknapp. "Midfield is the only area where I don't have many *options, we are really short there. I like Parker, but he *belongs to West Ham.
"He will also be 31 next birthday and they will want £15million. Daniel wouldn't buy players of that age, on big wages with no sell-on."

A PERFECT rendition and mastering of Taarab songs saw Mariam Mohamed seize a dream of her life time, winning 30m/- top prize of the Bongo Star Search 2010 on Friday night.

The action packed grand finale was conducted at the glamorous Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam. She enthralled music fanatics both at the venue and those who were following the live coverage on ITV as she performed three numbers including Asha Ramadhani's high riding ‘Mama nipe Radhi' and ‘Langu Rohoni' by Leila Rashid.

The Dar es Salaam based budding star concluded with a blistering performance and waist wiggling as she performed ‘Roho Mbaya' by Mwanahawa Ally only to send frenzied fans crazy.

"I'm very happy because this is just the beginning of my success. I just can't believe that I could make to this end," she said.

"I have nothing to say, I'm so happy. Thanks to you people for taking me this far, God bless you all. I will use the cash to build a house where I'll live with my child," she said.

She received a 30m/- cheque from George Kavishe, Brand Manager of the Kilimanjaro beer, the event main sponsors. The event's chief judge Rita Paulsen said Mariam deserved to win, because she always worked hard to improve her performance throughout her stint in the show.

However, Mariam could have taken the cash but an enchanting and talented singer from England Joseph Payne was in no doubt a fans winner. He settled third and was awarded 5m/- by cosponsors Airtel Tanzania.

He mastered such songs as ‘Yanini Malumbano' by 20 Percent, and ‘Mtoto wa Kariakoo' by Dully Skyes as fans went wild in celebrations. Amid murmurings and booing from the show lovers who flocked the venue, judges Master J and Salama Jabir openly seemed to be uninspired by Pyne.

They maintained that their conscience were clear that the local fans were just happy at hearing an Englishman singing in Kiswahili, saying there was nothing else worth giving him the victory.

Payne said shortly after the show that he was happy to be involved in BSS and he was satisfied with what he has achieved in the show. Second place went to James Martin, who received the 10m/- from Airtel Tanzania. Bella Kombo finished fourth while Waziri Salum settled fifth.

The grand finale was graced by Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Emmanuel Nchimbi, who said the government would continue supporting local upcoming artists in their endeavours to succeed. He further said BSS was providing the right platform for youths to employ themselves.

The grand finale was spiced up by top local artists including Diamond, Mwasiti, Joh Makini, Marlaw, Kibonde, TMK Wanaume, Mhe Temba, Chege and the Tanzania House of Talents.

NEWLY appointed Azam FC's head coach, Stewart Hall, made a perfect start in his first test in charge when his side beat giants Young Africans 3-1 in a friendly match at the Uhuru Stadium on Saturday.

Taifa Stars striker John Bocco caught Yanga defenders napping after just 22nd minutes, beating goalie Ivan Knezevic with ease before burying the ball into the back of the net.

Rwanda import Patrick Mafisango doubled the lead in the 37th minute, after he received a well laid pass from Bocco. The gifted left midfielder scored an eye-catching goal after beating four Yanga defenders; he also left goalie sprawling on the turf to score with ease.

Bocco got his name on the score sheet again few seconds before the interval, to make it 3-0 for Azam FC at the break. Yanga who fielded a second string side lost a midfield battle as Azam FC looked in command of everything.

Coach Kostadin Papic started without key players such as Shadrack Nsajigwa, Stephano Mwasika, Jerryson Tegete, Abdi Kassim and Ghanaian goalkeeper Yaw Berko.

After the break Papic had to introduce Berko, Nsajigwa, Mwasika, Nadir Haroub, Isaac Boakye, Ernest Boakye, Abdi Kassim, Omega Seme, Jerson Tegete and new signings Juma Seif and Davis Mwape, who to the large extent changed the pattern of play.

They had to wait until 84th minute when the 25m/- singing Zambian striker who was making his debut with the Jangwani Street team netted the consolation, after he received a through pass from Tegete.

The English coach has expressed desire to bring Simba and Yanga Premier League domination to and end, and yesterday's match probably gave him an insight of what he should expect.

The two teams used the match to gauge their squads for the forthcoming Mapinduzi Cup tournament and the Premier League, due to resume in its second round mid January, next year. Yanga are second on the league table on 25 points, two adrift their rivals Simba, while Azam FC are third on 20 points

FORMER musician, founder and leader of The African Stars Band ‘Twanga Pepeta' Abou Semhando is dead.

According to the deceased close friend John Kitime, the late Semhando alias ‘Baba Diana' died after his motorcycle was hit by a car on Saturday morning.

"He was on his home from a show in Africana. He played drums at the show shortly before he left at around 3 O'clock in the morning," said Kitime.

He added: "It is sad that we have lost another famous local musician in jut one week. He was actively involved in the burial of Dr Remmy Ongala. He even used his motorcycle to lead motorcade during Dr Remmy's burial."

During his hey days, the late Semhando, a drumist, expertly featured with several bands including Sola TV, Vijana Jazz and Super Matimila under Dr Remmy.

TANZANIA is supposed to have been shifted from analogue to the digital by 2012, when the public will have to subscribe in order to access television broadcasting.

Deputy Minister for Information,Youth, Culture and Sports, Dr Fenella Mukangara, made the remarks during the 16th graduation of Dar es Salaam School of Journalism (DSJ) in Dar es Salaam on Saturrday, saying the international laws require all countries to adopt the system by 2015.

''This is the great challenge, as people are not accustomed to subscription but we should educate them,'' the Deputy Minister told 318 DSJ graduands. Dr Mukangara, who was the chief guest at the event, told the graduands to adhere to professional ethics while in the field, by writing accurate, balanced and objective news in order to maintain public's trust.

The DSJ Principal, Mr Joachim Lupepo, said the school was planning to strengthen its academic scope by starting to offer degree courses during the 2012/2013 academic year after the completion of the construction of the teaching facilities including classrooms
and library.

He said the school had started process to open campuses in Mbeya, Mwanza and Arusha, saying the move aimed at improving the academic by introducing new courses and to
increase the number of the students.

Mr Lupepo said the school was facing the challenge of paying high rent charges for the teaching facilities like classrooms as the school had no own buildings, saying to address
the problem the school had started to construct its own buildings.

He also urged the government to include the certificate and diploma students in its loan scheme to enable a good number of students to attain education, adding there are many qualified people who want to study at certificate and diploma level but cannot afford
the costs.
 
Wenger sees eastern promise in Japanese teenager

Arsenal have signed Japanese teenager Ryo Miyaichi after a successful trial.
The 18-year-old striker, yet to play for Japan's senior team, will join his new Arsenal team-mates in January after representing Chukyodai Chuyko High School in the all-Japan high school tournament.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said that Miyaichi "trialled with us in the summer and has raw ability which has attracted many clubs around the world. I look forward to helping him fulfil his potential."
Wenger, who coached Japanese side Grampus Eight before joining Arsenal in 1996, has said "it's very important that Asia is represented at our club."
 
FKL dismisses formation of new company

Football Kenya Limited (FKL) has dismissed a move by Nationwide league clubs to form a private company to manage the competition.


During a meeting attended by delegates from all its 16 branches, the company went ahead and confirmed Bandari and Congo United as the two teams that have qualified for next year's Kenyan Premier League (KPL).
This is despite the fact that there have been calls from several quarters for an audit of the just-concluded Nationwide League so as to confirm some of the disputed results. But the FKL delegates meeting at the company's Goal Project offices dismissed the move by Nationwide clubs to form their own company as inconsequential.


The move by FKL to confirm Bandari and Congo comes a day after a section of the Nationwide League clubs announced the formation of a private company to manage the competition.
The company is chaired by Administration Police Secretary Ibrahim Jillo and will be run along the lines of the successful Kenyan Premier League model. A caucus of the Nationwide League clubs made the major announcement on Thursday and cited several reasons for their decision.


This include poor officiating and match fixing, open favouritism of specific teams, tampering with league fixtures, malicious and poor communication with clubs and lack of consultative meetings with clubs.
Other issues raised include low caliber management, lack of interest in marketing the league, lack of integrity among the administrators and lack of support from FKL.


The new body to run the Nationwide League has promised to seek sponsorship for the lower tier league. Companies and institutions sponsoring teams in the Nationwide League are behind the initiative to go it alone in managing the league.
They include Bidco, Homegrown, Naivasha, KPLC, Strathmore University, Oserian, Agro Chemical, Administration Police, Kenya Ports Authority and Mathare Youth Sports Association.

Hammers not an option for Allardyce

Sam Allardyce is intent on turning his back on English football to further his managerial experience abroad following his shock sacking by Blackburn Rovers last week.
Allardyce immediately flew out to Dubai after being given the boot by Rovers and had barely touched down in the Middle East before being strongly tipped to replace Avram Grant at West Ham.
But Allardyce has completely refutes claims that he has either held talks with the Hammers or has any intention of moving to the club in the event that Grant is sacked.
Close friends claim that Allardyce is evaluating his position while his agent, Mark Curtis attempts to settles issues with Rovers over his compensation package.

 A friend of Allardyce said: "West Ham is not an option. Sam has not talked to the club or has any intention of doing so.
"He sees his immediate future abroad, probably following in the footsteps of someone like Steve McClaren who has managed in Holland and Germany since he was fired by the FA from the England job.
"Sam is very keen to further his managerial education abroad unless something exceptional comes up in England which appears increasingly unlikely."

The year's Kenyan Premier League's revelation Paul Were is close to becoming an AFC Leopards player after he failed to agree with rivals Gor Mahia.


AFC Leopards chairman Julius Ochiel said they had already reached an agreement with the player and what was remaining was formalization by his Academy.


"Were does not belong to Tusker. He belongs to Fisa Academy, and the chairman of the Academy was away attending regional football tournament Cecafa in Dar es Salaam. We have not been able to meet. We have talked to the player and he is willing to join us. All we are waiting is for now is clearance from the Academy," Ochiel said.


Leopards, who finished last season 12th have also landed the signature of Western Stima's goal getter Brian Masiolo.
Meanwhile, Leopards have cancelled the intended elections after the Registrar of Societies acknowledged the suspension of the club's Secretary General Robert Asembo.


Asembo had called for elections on December 28 after falling out with the club's chairman Julius Ochiel.
"We have received an acknowledgement from the registrar of societies on the suspension of Robert Asembo which we did on December 1 and since he served a notice for election on December 6 after being suspended, the notice is null and void," said Ochiel who noted that Catherine Omanyo had replaced Asembo in the position.


Ochiel said they Club would meet early next month and decided if they will expel Asembo or pardon him after monitoring his behaviours.
 
Imbem makes u-turn over plans to leave AFC

AFC Leopards' Congolese striker, Itubu Imbem, has made a major u-turn about plans to leave the club and signed another contract with the club.


Imbem, the club's top scorer last season, announced two weeks ago that he was leaving the team after two years over what he termed lack of support from the fans.
However, yesterday, club chairman, Julius Ochiel, said the player has agreed to a one-year contract that will keep him at the club for one more season.


"We have negotiated with him and he has accepted to stay at the club. We are very happy by his change of heart as his presence will help us fight for top honours next season," said Ochiel.
It was widely expected that Imbem would move to Yanga of Tanzania, but it appears the move may not have worked out.



WIDE INTEREST


The Congolese has also attracted the interest of many local clubs, but his decision to sign again for AFC means he is no longer available.
Also renewing his future with the club is Imbem's fellow Congolese Demonde Selenge, who has signed another one-year contract. The former Sofapaka player has made a major contribution to the club, where he was appointed skipper for a good part of last season.


Other players who have signed for the club are Liberian national Abraham Koki, Edward Seda from Kakamega High School and Ramadhan Indimuli, who is returning to the club after leaving three years ago.


The AFC Leopards chairman also revealed that they are in the process of restructuring the technical bench.
"We will name our technical bench soon and it could be the same people we have had or new people. We are still in the process of identifying our needs in this area and pick the right person to meet it," he said. He said the team starts training at the end of this week after a two-week break at the end of the season.


The team is scheduled to hold a series of tours to Western Province, where a bulk of their fans come from.
"Anyone wishing to sponsor one of the trips should pay Sh150,000 in our bank account," said Ochiel.


The team's sponsorship deal with Mumias Sugar Company is also expected to be unveiled in a fortnight and is expected to help the club regain their past glory. At the same time, the club's governing council has confirmed January 9 as the date for their elections.
 
Gor Mahia hit Thika United

Ugandan import Ivan Anguyo scored a 60th minute penalty to give league chasers Gor Mahia a deserved 1-0 over Thika United to break their jinx of not winning at the Thika Municipal Stadium.


The win meant Gor kept up with the pace of leaders Ulinzi who beat Sony Sugar 2-1 on Saturday to maintain their three-point lead at the helm of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL).


The win was also a major treat for thousands of Gor Mahia fans, who brought the otherwise very quiet town into a standstill with hooting cars and song.



The fans who are optimistic that K'Ogalo would win the league they last won in 1995 travelled in 12 hired buses from Nairobi together with a number of private vehicles.


GorMahia coach Zedekiah ‘Zico' Otieno said after the match the title chase would go down to the wire and vowed to work on their goal difference in their remaining two matches.


"Today's match was very tough and the win is very crucial for us especially at this level of the league. The 12th man was very instrumental and I would like to thank all the travelling fans that made it look like we were playing at home.



Biased officiating


"We have a chance of winning the league and about the goal difference, it is only three goals which we can score any day," Otieno said.


Thika coach Abdallah Juma walked out of the pitch in protest before the match ended blaming referee Carlin Alusa of biased officiating.


"There are things that I cannot just see happening and pretend everything is normal. Both teams were playing well until the referee spoiled the tie," said Juma who lost his first match against Gor at the Thika Stadium since taking over at the club eight years ago.
Gor striker George Odhiambo seemed to have been brought down by defender Vincent Mogaka inside the box and Alusa did not hesitate to point to the spot and Anguyo made no mistake, despite Thika's custodian David Okello guessing the right way.


Kick off had to be delayed for 20 minutes as the match Commissioner Khamis Barghazal demanded that Gor fans who had climbed a ladder at the VIP stand come down.


Meanwhile, 10-man Karuturi Sports beat AFC Leopards with a 1-0 victory in a KPL match played at their new home ground, Mumias Complex.

At the start of the game, the teams observed a minute of silence in honour of football fans who perished in a stampede in Nairobi nine days ago.


AFC will, however, have themselves to blame after missing a penalty awarded in the 78th minute of the match.
Demonde Selenge, who was fouled at the penalty area, sent goalkeeper Mike Wanyika the wrong way, but his effort hit the woodwork.


Karuturi's Jacob Omondi scored the only goal in the 19th minute after receiving a cross from Titus Wamalwa.
A minute later, Geoffrey Musiebe came close to adding another goal, but his shot was punched away.
At the dying minutes of the first half, Omondi came close to scoring the second goal but his shot went slightly wide.
 
Pain-killing injections give Bassong the needle

Sebastien Bassong has condemned the use of pain-killing injections in the Premier League and insists they bring a premature end to a player's career span.
The 24-year-old began his career in France with Metz and the approach of his *Continental compatriots to recovering from injury is in stark contrast to what he has found in England.
Bassong specifically highlighted John Terry's reliance on *injections, which ensured his influential presence on the pitch for both club and *country. Yet, even the redoubtable Terry has been forced to allow his body to heal organically from a *catalogue of back and *hamstring injuries that *hindered him earlier in the campaign, an *approach Bassong *believes should be the norm.
Bassong said: "If you get *injured, take your time. If you look around, you see all these players getting injections in their knees and their backs for a whole season.

 "It only masks the injury. When the effects wear off, any player can tell you how much worse it feels. I'm 24 and I feel like I'm 35 already. You have to look after your body *because if it breaks down on you, you will just be replaced at this level.
"John Terry would play with a pain-killing *injections every day and then he got to the point where he couldn't do it anymore.
"It can only get harder the longer you carry on like that.
"In France, the older players seem to be in better condition because the competition is less *demanding, but also because they allow the players to *naturally recover more. I look at a lot of the English players and they have a lot of *problems.
"People like Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon are young, but have played a lot of *football for their age.
"This league is not easy and patching people up to play so many games when they are 18 can leave them with a feeling like they only have a few years left when they are 26.
"The earlier you start taking care of your body, the longer your career will be. Look at William Gallas.
"He has played in England for a long time, but he takes a lot of care to monitor his body, which is why he is playing so well now."
Bassong (inset) shudders when he recounts his first experience of using artificial means to overcome an injury last *season. It is something that he has pledged never to repeat – even if it means it will take a longer period of time for him to make a full recovery from the injury.
He added: "When I had a painkilling injection after the last game of the season, it was the worst time in my life.
"I was playing with pain for a couple of months, but I couldn't take it anymore at the end of the Burnley game so the club doctor gave me the *injection.
"I wasn't sure about it to begin with, but I went for it. But the pain I had after it was the worst I've ever felt.
"I went on the train to Paris straight after receiving it and I was in tears in the carriage. My dad had to pick me up from the station when I got to France.
"Just moving my arms hurt – it was agony. It carried on for three or four days *afterwards. I decided then that I wouldn't take another one of those again. I've noticed in England they give out pain-killing injections just like that.
"It's not good – it's better that you get rest instead. *Injections just give you more trouble down the line.
"Now, I would rather take one more week to rest, if I have a problem – because it would be better for me and the team in the long run *instead of making the injury worse."
