Inter stunned as Mazembe reach final

TP Mazembe Englebert have produced the biggest shock in the history of the FIFA Club World Cup, beating Sport Club Internacional 2-0 to become the first team from outside Europe and South America to qualify for the final. Goals from Mulota Kubangu and Dioko Kaluyituka secured arguably the greatest ever win by an African club, humbling the Brazilian giants and leaving these Congolese underdogs just 90 minutes from becoming world champions.

It was difficult to envisage the scenes of jubilation among the Mazembe players and fans in the opening stages of this match, with Rafael Sobis going close for Internacional as early as the first minute after a slick exchange of one-touch passes. The same player continued to find space during some one-sided early exchanges, and it took a magnificent save from the heroic Muteba Kidiaba to deny him the opening goal after eight minutes. The net had looked certain to bulge when Alecsandro sought out his striking colleague with an incisive low cross, but while the Inter No11 made solid contact, Kidiaba was somehow able to get down to divert the ball behind.

The Brazilians' movement and speed of passing continued to bewitch Mazembe, and after Kidiaba had again come to the rescue by tipping away an Indio header, Tinga missed arguably the best of Inter's chances, heading over from seven yards with the keeper stranded. Slowly but surely though, the African champions gained a foothold in this match, restricting their opponents' opportunities and even launching a few counter-attacks of their own.

Mulota Kubangu provided their best effort of the first half, stinging the palms of Renan from all of 30 yards, but it was in the second period that Mazembe really began to assert themselves. There was a greater urgency and aggression to their play from the moment action resumed, and it took just eight minutes for their more adventurous approach to be rewarded with the opening goal.

And what a goal it was too, volleyed just inside the far post by Kubangu after the Inter defence had allowed him time and space to control an Amia Ekanga knockdown. The ensuing celebrations were predictably exuberant, and once they had died down it was left to the Brazilians to come up with a response.

However, although Celso Roth's team continued to carve out chances, they found in Kidiaba a worthy and defiant adversary, with the Mazembe keeper again denying Rafael Sobis on 59 minutes after the striker had lashed in a left-foot volley. With every save, the African champions' No1 seemed to grow in confidence, and with 20 minutes remaining he produced another point-blank stop to parry from Giuliano after the Inter substitute had burst clean through on goal.

It wasn't entirely one-way traffic though, and Renan needed to produce some heroics of his own to tip over a terrific 25-yard free-kick from goalscorer Kubangu as the clock ticked down. However, the Inter keeper was helpless to prevent the goal that capped this historic African triumph. As they threw men forward in search of an equaliser, the Brazilians were caught by a classic sucker-punch, with Dioko Kaluyituka cutting in from the left and drilling an unstoppable 20-yard drive just inside the left-hand post.

Mazembe now go on to face the winner of tomorrow's second semi-final between FC Internazionale Milano and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, while Internacional will have to make do with battling for bronze against the losers.

South Africa – 10th Playing day
Folowing the first ten playing days Mamelodi Sundowns are in the lead with 24 points ( 8 victories and 2 defeats), ahead of Ajax Cape Town who have four points less. Sundowns obtained their 8th victory in the campaign thanks to their 3-1 thrashing of Golden Arrows. Aaron Mokoena scored a brace in the encounter. Ajax were away winners as well. Orlando Pirates are ranked third with six points away from the top after a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1. Kaizer Chiefs were stuned by Free State Stars 0-1 in their last encounter and lie fourth.
Mpho Maleka of Mpumalanga Black Aces is ahead in the goal scoring chats with six goals, just as Knowledge Musona (Kaizer Chiefs) and the always young Sibusiso Zuma who now plays for Vasco da Gama.

ALGERIA – 11th Playing day
ASO Chlef made the best of their game against lowly AS Khroub 3-0 to go top of the standings with 23 points, three better than ES Setif whose game against JS Kabylie was moved to another date. The match that was to oppose MC Alger to JSM Béjaïa was also moved to a further date. Setif and MC Alger were occupied by the finals of the finals of the UNAF regional club football competition. Setif who are second have two delayed games and may move up the standings if they are able to win both.

BENIN – 12th playing day
With one playing day to go before the end of the first phase of the championship, Tonnerre who beat Dragons of Ouémé 2-1 are topping the charts with 21 points, two better than runners up US Kraké and JA Plateau. Kraké beat Requins 1-0 and Plateau overcame Panthere 2-1. Humiliated 2-0 by ASPAC, Mogas 90 are now ranked fourth with three points. Avrankou who lost to Buffles of Borgou 0-1 is fifth.
CAMEROON – 5th Playing day
Coton sport of Garoua stay top of the championship with 12 points after a 1-0 defeat of Panthere of Nde on Sunday. Former African Champions Union of Douala are second with 11 points after their away win to Bamenda against Yong Sports Academy. Former African champions Canon are third after their 3-1 defeat of Astres while The University of Ngaoundere that played a 1-1 tie against Caiman de Douala lie fourth. Newcomers AS Lausanne of Yaoundé are bottom of the table having lost all of their first five games of the championship.
EGYPT – 13th Playing day

Three delayed matches of the 13th playing day of the Egyptian championship were played this weekend. Al Ahly gained a point in their 2-2 draw away to Al Ittihad as Ismaïly defeated green horns Smouha 3-2. Haras El Hodoud edged Police Union 1-0.
Zamalek is now first with 27 points and a delayed game followed by Ismaïly, 25 points. Police Union and ENPPI follow with 23 points. Al Ahly is 5th placed with 20 points and two games to catch up.
Three men presently topping the goalscoring charts are Ahmed Abdul Zaher (ENPPI), Cameroonian Edet Otobong (Ittihad) and Shikabala (Zamalek). Following are Ahmed Samir Farag (Ismaïly), Burkinabe Abdoulaye Cissé (Al Masri) and Ghanaian Kwabena Yaro (Military Production) all with six goals.
MOROCCO – 12th Playing day

The standings remain unchanged after the 12 playing day as Olympique Khourigba stay top after their 1-0 win over KAC Kenitra. The team has two point more than Moghreb of Fès who beat WAC de Casablanca 2-1. Raja thrashed Wydad of Fès 3-0 and the Rabat derby saw FUS fresh from winning the Orange Confederations Cup lost to FAR 0-1. FUS are now 10th out of 16 clubs with 11 points, 13 adrift from Khouribga but they have four matches to meet up with the leaders due to its participation in the final stage sof the Confederations Cup.
NIGERIA – 6th Playing day
After a slender1-0 win over Warri Wolves, Dolphin FC have moved to the top of the championship alongside Sunshine Stars who beat Gombe United 3-1 during the 6th playing day. Warri Wolves moved down to third with 11 points, just one behind the co leaders and one better than five clubs who are in fourth position. They include Shooting Stars who defeated Plateau United 2-1, Kano Pillars who trounced Enyimba, 3-0, Kwara United who got a vital away win over JUTH 2-0, Heartland FC who edged Crown 1-0, and Gombe United.
The 6th playing day was marked by a sad incident. Defender Emma Ogoli of Ocean Boys collapsed and died on his way to the hospital just before the break in their clash with Niger Tornadoes. Nigerain authorities have announced measures to anticiapte any further occurrences.
TUNISIA – 11th Playing day
Despite a 2-1 loss in Gabès Esperance of Tunis remains top of the standings with just a point above second placed Etoile Sahel who defeated ES Zarzis 1-0. Coming in a distant third is the trio of Stade Tunisien, CS Sfaxien and CS Hammam Lif.
 
Renard takes charge of Al-Masri

Former Angola and Zambia coach Herve Renard has been appointed as head coach of Egyptian club, Al-Masri till the end of the season, the Port Said based club announced on Monday.

The Frenchman missed out on becoming the successor to Hossam Al-Badri at Egyptian champions, Al-Ahly. Masri are currently eighth in the Egyptian Premier League.

Renard guided Zambia to the quarters of the Angola 2010 Orange Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 14-years for the Chipolopolos before managing a brief spell in charge of Angola later.

There is no questioning that four-time African champions TP Mazembe Englebert are a force to be reckoned with on their home continent. Now, having won the CAF African Champions League for the last two years in succession, the Congolese outfit have now started to throw their weight around on the global stage as well.

Club de Futbol Pachuca can vouch for that after going down 1-0 to the Lubumbashi side in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010 last week. Mazembe's reward for that notable success is for a semi-final against reigning Copa Libertadores champions SC Internacional do Porto Alegre, a meeting the Brazilians cannot afford to take lightly.

One of the factors in the African side's defeat of Los Tuzos was their ability to combine their vaunted attacking strength with solidity at the back. It was an attribute that matchwinner Mbenza Bedi pointed to when he spoke to FIFA.com after last Friday's game: "We're not a defensive team but a team that defends well."

The Crows' new Senegalese coach Lamine N'Diaye has had a big hand giving them this added steel. A renowned tactician, N'Diaye's standing with TP Mazembe fans is such that rate him as highly as a certain well-known Portuguese coach, regaling him with chants of "Mourinho! Mourinho!" after the 5-0 defeat of Esperance in the first leg of this year's CAF Champions League final.

Since I took over this team they've surprised me in every game. And they're the only ones responsible for their success.

N'Diaye has no desire to hog the limelight, however, and is more than content to deflect praise towards his players. "I've been telling them all week that all they have to do is to go out and do on the pitch what they've been doing in training," he said, explaining his motivational techniques.

"After all, it all depends on them and only them. Since I took over this team they've surprised me in every game. And they're the only ones responsible for their success, because when they run out on the pitch I have to stop at the touchline."

Aside from N'Diaye's valuable input from the bench, the Congolese hopefuls have also been indebted to their charismatic goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba, whose sparkling saves frustrated Pachuca and whose effusive celebration of Bedi's matchwinning strike caused much hilarity in the stands. Given the disappointments he endured at UAE 2009, Kidiaba's joy was understandable.

"Against Auckland City last year I handled the ball outside the box and got sent off," the keeper told FIFA.com in a recent interview. "People remember me for that red card. This time I want them to remember me for my ability."

The Pachuca strikers certainly have every reason to remember Kidiaba, who used his reflexes and speed off the line to thwart them time and again, while the woodwork also came to his rescue on a couple of occasions. As Bedi said afterwards: "When you play with that kind of togetherness, when your keeper has a good day and when you have a little bit of luck too, then you get the feeling that nothing can go wrong."

There is one other factor that makes the Crows such a formidable outfit, however. Prior to the start of each half, the players line up on the goal-line and kneel down to pray, sending out the signal to their opponents that the TP Mazembe wall is one that takes a lot to knock down.

Zambia Under-20 national team on Sunday afternoon retained their COSAFA Youth Championship title after a 4-1 win over Namibia in the final played at the University of Botswana Stadium in Gaborone.

Coach Oswald Mutapa told Cafonline after the game that be victory was sweet after breaking Namibia's hearts of a first-ever COSAFA Youth Championship dream.

"It was great defending the Cup and the boys have done us proud and it is a sweet victory," Mutapa said.

Striker Chakwa Lungu opened scores in the 11th minute slotting in a shot pasted Namibian goalkeeper Collin Ndjai.

Lungu was again on target three minutes later to head in his second of the day before Zambia took a 3-0 lead into half time through Rodrick Kabwe in the 44th minute.

Zambia completed their rout with the fourth goal courtesy of Lewis Macha when he finished off a rebounding free-kick in the 63 minute.

Namibia's consolation goal came in the 84th minute through Ikwaterua Tjozongoro.

Meanwhile in the third and fourth playoff game, Zimbabwe took bronze after defeating Madagascar 3-1 in the curtain-raiser at the same venue.

A Denver Mukamba brace in the 10th and 24th minute including one goal Willard Kalongonda two minutes before the break secured Zimbabwe's third place finish. Florent Rajaoniasy got one for Madagascar in the 21st minute.

TP Mazembe Englebert midfielder Mbenza Bedi made a name for himself on Friday when he became the first player to score in two consecutive FIFA Club World Cup competitions. On target in his side's 2-1 defeat to Korea Republic's Pohang Steelers last year, Bedi got in on the act again on Friday, lashing home the only goal as the African champions saw off Club de Futbol Pachuca in the quarter-finals.

"I feel very much at ease here," the Crows' goal hero told FIFA.com after joining Dwight Yorke as one of only two players to score in separate FIFA Club World Cup tournaments. "I've found my bearings and this is obviously a competition that agrees with me. The only difference is that this time my goal actually counted for something."

As Bedi went on to explain, he and his team-mates are feeling very comfortable on their second trip to the UAE and are in the mood to express themselves: "Football is a universal game and it's played the same way all over the world. We feel at home here, like we do anywhere, and we're going to play the same way we do at home: to win."

Building on firm foundationsAside from Bedi's smart finishing, the Crows owed their victory over the Mexicans to some solid defending, an aspect of their game that their recently-appointed Senegalese coach Lamine N'Diaye has worked hard to improve.

An appreciative Bedi was quick to give the new man praise: "He's prepared us well, but he told us that his work ended at the touchline and that it was up to us to make our own luck on the pitch. He's put a big emphasis on the defensive side of our gameplan. We're not a defensive team but a team that defends well. There's a difference.

This is obviously a competition that agrees with me. The only difference is that this time my goal actually counted for something.

"Attacking comes more instinctively than defending," added the two-time CAF African Champions League winner. "Defending is something you have to work on harder. But we've done that and it's paid off for us."

As the midfielder went on to acknowledge, another possible factor in the Congolese side's success on Friday was the experience they gained at UAE 2009, when they returned home with much to ponder after losing both their games.

"This is our second appearance in the competition and we can't make the excuse of being inexperienced or naive this time," he said. "The first went badly. We played well and we scored goals but the games didn't go our way. Even so, it's come in useful for us because we feel more confident now. We've drawn on that experience."

The pride of Africa
As was the case last year, the Crows are being cheered on by a sizeable contingent of fans, who have made the long trip from Lubumbashi to give their heroes all the support they need.

"There are loads of them supporting us here and we want to win for them too," said Bedi, giving his reaction to the incessant singing and music in the stands. "We taking part in the biggest club competition in the world and we're flying the flag for Africa in style. We can feel proud."

The Congolese side and their fans will have even more reason to be proud if they can claim a place in next Saturday's final. To do that, however, they will need to find a way past semi-final opponents SC Internacional do Porto Alegre, the 2006 champions.

"They're a great team from a great footballing country," said Bedi. "But we're relaxed and determined because we know we're a big club too. We respect our rivals, but we'll be doing our utmost to beat them."

Asked if he can add another goal to his tally against the Brazilians, the reserved midfielder responded bullishly: "I hope so. I don't see why I can't get more than one."

The draw for 17th African U-20 Championship, Libya 2011 will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 in Tripoli, Libya.

The eight qualified teams; hosts Libya, Ghana, Cameroon, Gambia, Egypt, Lesotho, Mali and Nigeria will be drawn into two groups of four teams to compete for the title.

The semi finalists will represent the continent at the FIFA U-20 World Cup slated for Colombia later next year.

The 17th edition of the biennial championship will be held from March 18 to April 1, 2011.

Frenchman Henri Michel signed a contract on Friday to become coach of the Nzalang of Equatorial Guinea till the end of the African Cup of Nations 2012, both parties announced in Malabo.

Michel, who was coach of France in 1984 and 1988, signed the contract following negotiations initiated by his compatriot, Philippe Troussier, former coach of Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco. Troussier travelled to Malabo in November for the deal, but no explanation has been given for the final decision.

Michel's contract has thirteen-month duration till after the CAN in February 2012, the Equatorial Guinea Secretary of State for Sports, Ruslan Obiang Nsue, who is also co-president of the Organising Committee of the 2012 CAN, declared at the press conference.

"We have signed a contract with a big coach. Henry Michel will be coming with three collaborators," Obiang Nsue said.

On the mission of the new coach, he said: "His mission is to cross the first round of the competition. You know that Equatorial Guinea has never participated at the final phase of the CAN.

Michel replaces the Paraguayan, Carlos Lobo Diarte, who has managed Nzalang since 2009. According to officials of the Equato-Guinea Football Federation, the former coach has not worked with the team since last August for health reasons.

Henri Michel responded "My ambition is to create a solid team and succeed in the CAN.

"It's an opportunity and needs the participation of everyone, thus the public must be patient," he told the people of his Equatorial Guinea.

The signing of the contract with Michel represents a great day for Equatorial Guinean football, says the President of Feguifoot, Bonifacio Manga Obiang.

He revealed to AFP that the contract of the Frenchman indicates that he will receive 60.000 Euros per month for himself and his collaborators and he would take residence in the country.

"Henri Michel will receive 30,000 Euros monthly while his collaborators will take the rest. He will stay in Equatorial Guinea," he said.

Manga Obiang mentioned last November 23 that the remuneration had been previewed to be 30,000 Euros in the contract Philippe Troussier prepared, which did not indicate that he will take residence in Equatorial Guinea.

Continental kings TP Mazembe of DR Congo will face FUS Rabat of Morocco on Saturday, January 29, 2011 for the Orange CAF Super Cup in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

The annual one-off match pits the winners' of the Orange CAF Champions League and Orange CAF Confederation Cup together.

Mazembe retained the premier continental club after beating Tunisia's Esperance 6-1 on aggregate whilst FUS Rabat toppled CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 3-2 on aggregate in the second-tier competition.

It would be the second successive time that Mazembe will be playing host to the annual one-off match, after beating Stade Malien of Mali 2-0 in the last edition early this year, and also the first time teams from the two countries are meeting in the annual one-off match incepted in 1993.

Egyptian giants Ahly have won the CAF Super Cup the most times – 4 times, one more than city rivals Zamalek. Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel and Enyimba FC of Nigeria have both won it twice whilst Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), ASEC Mimosas (Cote d'Ivoire). Orlando Pirates (South Africa), Africa Sports (Cote d'Ivoire), Esperance (Tunisia) and TP Mazembe (DR Congo) have each emerged winners once.

The three nominees in alphabetical order are Didier Drogba (Chelsea and Cote d'Ivoire), Samuel Eto'o Fils (Inter Milan and Cameroon) and Asamoah Gyan (Sunderland and Ghana).
The winner will be decided by votes from the respective senior national teams' Head Coaches or Technical Director of the 53 National Associations affiliated to CAF.

The contenders were nominated by the Media Technical and Football Committees of CAF taking into consideration their performance during the year under review, January 2010 to November 2010.

Ten (10) players were shortlisted for the coveted individual honour in African football.

The GLO- CAF Awards – Cairo 2010 to honour best achievers in African Football for the Year 2010 will be held on Monday, December 20 in Cairo, Egypt.
