Junior football coach lands job as Seychelles manager following mistaken identity
A junior football coach landed a job as the manager of Seychelles' national team after the country's football association mistook him for former Manchester City defender Andy Morrison.
Blue sky thinking: Seychelles may not have much of a team but their training facilities aren't too bad
By Telegraph staff 9:25AM GMT 24 Dec 2010
Andrew Amers-Morrison got the job while he was on holiday in the tropical island.
The local federation managed to confuse Amers-Morrison, 40, with the former City player who turned out for Kevin Keegan's side - handing the holidaymaker a two-year contract.
Chairman Suketu Patel said: "We thought we were getting the real Andy Morrison, but instead we have an impostor."
After realising that a mistake had been made Amers-Morrison's new bosses called him in for a meeting - where they incredibly gave him six months grace in which to prove he was up to the task.
Amers-Morrison did attempt to become a professional player in his youth, but saw his progress hampered by a series of injuries, before he turned his attention to coaching and set up the Samba Street Soccer School in London in 2005, a centre that helps disadvantaged children.

Neil Lennon evoked the dark arts of football as he contemplated Celtic's encounter with St Johnstone on Boxing Day – the fourth in a sequence of five successive home games for his players in the run-up to next Sunday's Old Firm derby at Ibrox. The extraordinary sequence has come about because the away games scheduled to punctuate the run have been postponed as a consequence of the Arctic conditions.
However, Celtic have been unable to convert home advantage into the hard currency of victories – with six points dropped from a possible nine in draws with Dundee United, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock – and they trail Rangers by two points, having played one game more than the champions.
Lennon, meanwhile, has watched, all too aware that a clone of his combative character as a player would render Celtic great service. He confessed, too, that a calculated breach of the rules would probably have stopped Kilmarnock taking the lead at Parkhead on Tuesday night when Conor Sammon bolted half the length of the field to finish with a deft low shot.
As Lennon watched Emilio Izaguirre unable to put in an effective challenge, he knew what he would have done in the Honduran's place. "I'd like to be able to put a snarl into the team but you can't do that because it all comes down to a player's personality," said the Hoops' manager.
"We have good footballers – they're talented but they just need a wee bit more bite at times. If we'd been a bit more cynical we could have brought Conor Sammon down long before he got into the box, conceded the free-kick and seen the danger out.
"That's something – the dark side of the game – that we need now and again. I sound like Harry Potter, don't I? "You take a hit for the team even if it means taking a yellow card – but maybe that will come with experience." Rangers, meanwhile, have benefited from the shortage of games to nurse several casualties back to fitness, or close to it. At Fir Park this afternoon they may be able to field Kyle Lafferty and Maurice Edu and their one recent outing – the 1-1 draw with Caley Thistle in Inverness eight days ago – permitted the return of the dependable Sasa Papac after several weeks of inaction which followed a long period of concussion diagnosed after he was stretchered off in the 3-0 defeat by Hibernian at Ibrox on Nov 10. Any head injury is a serious concern to Papac, who survived a head-on car crash in Austria in 2005, a year before Paul le Guen signed him for Rangers. "What happened in the Hibs game could happen at any time," he said. "All I know is that I clashed with another player but I don't know how, or what happened. I honestly can't remember. "I worry, really I worry. I've never had an injury in my career. My body is great from the chin down but the head is always a problem. "Believe me, I always think about the car crash. For me it's a big problem. "There were lots of broken bones after the crash – my eye socket, cheek bone – lots of things. I had a hard, six-hour operation and it changed my life completely, on the pitch and off it. "I just wanted to show everyone that I could come back and be better than I was before the crash. Sometimes I can feel it after a game, especially if it's been a physical match – that's why I always joke that I was unlucky moving to Scottish football with so many high balls." Nevertheless, Papac – whose contract expires in the summer – wants to stay in his hazardous environment. "It's now getting very close to the end of my contract and I have to consider everything," he told Telegraph Sport. "I don't have an agent, I do all the negotiations myself. I've always said Rangers must have the first option. "I must give them the chance to take me first, but you just never know what's happening. If it comes to January then I must think about my future."
Manchester City's Nigel de Jong braced for wrath of Newcastle fans following Hatem Ben Arfa broken leg
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has launched a strong defence of Nigel de Jong as the Dutch international readies himself for a hostile reception at St James' Park.
Controversial: Roberto Mancini says there was 'nothing malicious' in Nigel de Jong's leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa Photo: REUTERS
Though it was De Jong's chest-high tackle on Xabi Alonso in the World Cup final which made him a global villain, there are few grounds where the City midfielder will be offered a more intimidating welcome than Newcastle. That is because of the challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa in October which broke the Frenchman's leg in two places.
But Mancini maintains that De Jong – also responsible for breaking the leg of Bolton's Stuart Holden last season – did not intend to harm the player.
Since that incident, the Dutchman has picked up just one booking, proof for his manager that he is no worse a tackler than countless others in England and abroad.
"There was nothing malicious in the challenge," Mancini said. "He was just going for the ball. If you remember, none of the players who were around the incident said anything at the time because he played the ball and after that Ben Arfa was very unlucky.
"There have been far worse tackles than that in the game. Nigel was obviously not happy that Ben Arfa had been so seriously injured. That is a normal reaction. But it has not affected his game. There are a lot of players in the world who tackle like Nigel. In England, in particular, there are many players like Nigel. I think he was just very unlucky."
While Mancini could not be more strident in his defence of De Jong, he is clearly determined to take a harder line with Mario Balotelli. Though the City manager admits he is close to the troubled 20 year-old, he is keen to stress he expects as much from him as he does any of his charges. "We do have a good relationship but I am the manager and Mario is a player," he said. "And Mario must play well, must work hard every day, like the other players. If Mario doesn't work, he doesn't play. It's not important that Mario has a good technique and is a good player. If we want to improve we need everybody giving 200 per cent. Mario must come back and help the midfield and work harder." Such a message, it seems, is unlikely to be received warmly by Balotelli, who has cut a surly figure for much of his time in England, an image bolstered by his confession earlier this week that he would welcome the chance to team up alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic at AC Milan. Mancini, certainly, would like to see his player enjoy his football more – "it is one of the best things you can do" – but he is more concerned that Balotelli should fulfil his potential, warning him that being heralded as the next big thing is hardly the same as emerging as a genuine star. "Mario is special," Mancini said. "I think he has everything to become one of the best players in the world. He has great attributes to play football but you have to put with that your heart, your strength on the pitch. I know plenty of players, talented like Mario, who didn't play football for a top team. He has to prove he has the character to play at the top level." Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is on the verge of signing a new long-term deal. Taylor, 25, is expected to finalise a new five-year contract having feared that he may have played his last game for Newcastle. He was transfer-listed after contract talks broke down over his wage demands but new manager Alan Pardew has kick-started negotiations and now the former England Under-21 captain is ready to commit his future to the club before the turn of the year.
All systems go as Scottish Premier League hope to stage full fixture list on Boxing Day
It will be a white Christmas but not the feared blank one for Scotland's top clubs after the Scottish Premier League confirmed that all six of the Boxing Day games are on course to be played – the start of a festive fixture list that will see most teams engage in three fixtures in the space of a week.

The resumption of play, should it be confirmed, will be a particular relief to Dundee United, who have not been active since drawing 1-1 away to Celtic on Nov 20 and who have now played three games fewer than three teams – Hearts, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock – above them in the table.
United, though, remain cautious about their game against Hamilton at Tannadice, because although the undersoil heating has been on continuously, pockets of ice remain on the pitch and covers have been laid over the surface as a precautionary measure.
Celtic will certainly be in action at Parkhead, for the fourth consecutive game at home, a sequence that has not yielded the expected dividend for Neil Lennon's team. Aside from shedding points against United, Celtic have also been held by Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock.
Now they face St Johnstone, to be followed by a midweek encounter with Motherwell – again at home – before they travel to Ibrox for the New Year derby on Jan 2. They are reinforced by the return of Scott Brown and the Celtic captain demonstrated his presence to Lennon's satisfaction on arrival as a second half substitute against Killie on Tuesday night.
"The first thing he did when he came back was make a great tackle on the halfway line which lifted the crowd and lifted the team," said the Celtic manager. "I wasn't disappointed at all with the performance against Killie – it was the best we had played in quite a few games.
"We got Izaguirre and Forrest back and we just needed someone to put the ball in the net. I felt our attacking play was good, so I am not going to criticise. It was just that the result did not merit the performance." Ki Sung Yeung has impressed Lennon in recent weeks but he and his fellow South Korean, Cha Du Ri, are required for international duty in the Asian Cup and will fly out after Sunday's game. "We'll miss his composure, vision and the way he can dictate the game by switching play very quickly," said Lennon. "Brown and Beram Kayal give us different options. They are more powerful and probably better at getting the ball back. Brown will give us the drive that we have probably missed. "Ki probably just needed a wee bit of time to settle in and adapt to the Scottish game, but he has done that now and I thought he was superb against Kilmarnock, the best player on the pitch. Unfortunately we will miss him for a few weeks but his emergence has been a huge bonus this season." St Johnstone, who are at home to Rangers next Wednesday, are wary of being sucked down towards the danger zone but for this game they must do without the suspended duo of Jody Morris and Jamie Adams. Murray Davidson sustained an ankle knock in training but should be OK for the trip to the east end of Glasgow. Rangers, who have a two-point lead plus a game in hand over Celtic, travel to Motherwell after a two-week break since their previous outing against Caley Thistle in Inverness, where a 1-1 draw reminded the champions that the league is proving much less predictable than seemed likely after the first few weeks. "The season has been a little bit bizarre so far but as I said after we won our first eight games, they were by the odd goal or in the last couple of minutes, so the margins are really tight," said Ally McCoist, Rangers' assistant manager. "Inverness and Kilmarnock are playing as well as they've done in many a year. "A lot of things are being said about the SPL and apparently people aren't happy with what they're seeing but you have to take your hat off to teams – they've been a breath of fresh air. "Hearts are also on a terrific run. It's our job at Rangers and Celtic to ask why we've dropped points. I thought we were very poor in the first half against Inverness but in the second we could have scored four or five. Overall, you couldn't argue that they deserved a point. "We were turned over by Hibs at home and they definitely deserved to beat us. Everyone says the Old Firm games are more important than they've ever been, in terms of the destination of the title but there are banana skins all over this league and it really doesn't surprise me to see so many points dropped. "To be top at Christmas is a real boost for us. It's fantastic that we're there at this stage because it's been well documented that we have a smaller squad than we'd like. "We've also had a few injuries, like Jelavic, Papac, Edu, Broadfoot – boys we've been missing at the one time. That's been a problem for us." Edu and Kyle Lafferty could resume duty for Rangers at Fir Park against a Motherwell side who are still without a manager and who cannot call upon Steve Jennings, who is suspended following the red card he was shown against Hearts in intriguing circumstances last week. He will miss another two games, having been caution for the seventh time this season earlier in that game. Hearts, in third place, found their recent momentum disrupted somewhat by Caley Thistle in last week's draw at Tynecastle and travel to Kilmarnock in what looks an attractive game. The Ayrshire side, who beat Hearts at Tynecastle earlier in the season, have no fresh injury worries after their midweek outing at Celtic Park. For Hearts, Lee Wallace, David Obua and Jason Thomson are nearing returns but unlikely to be considered, while Andrew Driver and Suso Santana remain a few weeks away from action. Elsewhere, Craig Brown and Archie Knox take charge of Aberdeen for the first time in a hazardous fixture against Hibernian at Easter Road, while Caley Thistle are likely to have to do without Jonny Hayes, who has an ankle problem, in their home game against St Mirren. The Paisley side likewise have to do without Gareth Wardlaw, who begins a two-game suspension.
Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jonathan Woodgate advised to take 'make or break' loan move
Harry Redknapp is blessed this Boxing Day to choose from arguably the strongest squad in the Premier League, but perish the thought that he has forgotten about those players on the periphery.

In a move to put West Ham, Everton and all clubs struggling for cover at centre-half on instant alert, the Tottenham manager has advised injury-ravaged Jonathan Woodgate to embark on a "make or break" loan spell to try to save his career.
The 30 year-old has hardly played a game since aggravating his persistent groin problem in November last year but Redknapp, rather than giving up on Woodgate, who has travelled as far afield as Australia for surgery, urged him to make one last gamble.
The fact that Tottenham head for Sunday's game at Aston Villa with a surfeit of high-quality centre-backs, Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Bassong chief among them, only underlines how highly he is regarded.
"If he comes through the next week or two, it might be a good idea for him to go out on loan," Redknapp said of Woodgate, who could yet be eligible for Premier League registration in the second half of the season.
"I think he fancied that. He's a fantastic centre-half but he has been out a long time now, over 18 months. It's what he needs to do."
West Ham, whose porous defence has contributed to their slump to the bottom of the league table, are likely to be first in the queue for his services, while Everton - grappling with the seven-week absence of Phil Jagielka - also require reinforcements. "Anyone with Woodgate on loan would be getting one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League," Redknapp argued. "He's a natural athlete, up there with the very best in this country. But he needs matches under his belt, so if he could go out on loan, rather than picking up the odd reserve game at the training ground, it would be good. "He just wants to get back playing again. What he has been through the past 18 months must have been a nightmare for him. He has been doing a lot with the fitness coaches, now he's doing some ball work as well. It is the best he has felt for a while. "I hope he will be ready to play in a couple of weeks. If he had been out for the rest of the season, I don't know whether he would have come back from that. "You're talking about two years. But he's back training, he's in good shape, so it's make or break for him, this period. He needs to get his career going again." The return of Woodgate, who exudes natural leadership, would also solve one of the few shortcomings Redknapp identifies in his Tottenham team: the lack of a lionheart. Although the manager still believes the club have a "40-1 shot" of winning the league, he said: "We're a very quiet team. "Where are the Tony Adamses of this world? I'm talking like an old man, but there used to be loads of characters in football, people who would organise your team. Rather than having the manager shout from the touchline, they'll do it for you. "Jamie Carragher is still one at Liverpool, and John Terry's another at Chelsea, but there aren't many around. "Rio [Ferdinand] didn't talk so much when I signed him at West Ham, but he became more of a leader as he got older. If you have one, you're very lucky. "Carragher is amazing. When he dislocated his shoulder against us, he was in agony as he walked off. But he saw that the substitute [Sotirios Kyrgiakos] hadn't got his gear on and screamed at him. "Players don't talk to each other so much. They prefer to do it through computers, to send messages. Perhaps if they could have message machines during a game: ‘Watch your back, there's a man coming on'. "Even the kids who come through the youth team are quiet, not rough and ready. But you can't make somebody a talker when he's not a talker. You can't change personalities. "You can't just go and get a foreigner in, either. He might be a talker, but if he's talking in Hungarian, it's not going to make much of a difference."

Dennis Okeyo | NATION Kenya Under-17 football team members celebrate with the trophy that they won in the Cecafa Under-17 Three Nations tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, upon arrival at JKIA on Thursday evening. They did not lose a match in the tournament. By Sammy Kitula skitula@ke.nationmedia.com Posted Friday, December 24 2010 at 21:00 In Summary
Youngsters never lost a match in Three-Nations tournament in Rwanda, finished top of the league
The Kenyan juniors jetted back home on Thursday evening with heads held high following a successful outing in Kigali where they topped the Cecafa Under-17 Three-Nations football tournament.
The lads have done what their elder brothers, Harambee Stars, failed to do in the Senior Challenge Cup held in Dar es Salaam: to win a match.
In fact, the youngsters never lost a match in Rwanda and they finished the tournament on top of the league with four points from a 2-2 draw against Tanzania and an impressive 3-2 victory against the fancied home boys.
The plane carrying the contingent touched down at the JKIA shortly before 7pm but their reception was low key save for the presence of Football Kenya Limited acting CEO and technical director, Patrick Naggi.
Determination and passion
Accompanying the group was Cecafa secretary-general Nicholas Musonye, who showered the team with praise, calling out to the government and FKL to ensure they maintain the team for the future.
Musonye said he had never witnessed such determination and passion from a Kenyan soccer team as he did in Kigali.
"The boys played their hearts out in that tournament. I have never seen them like that before. The final was very physical but the youngsters managed to conquer," said Musonye.
Rwanda is the East African representative to the forthcoming Caf U-17 youth championship which will also be held in Kigali early next year and have been in residential training for the past two months.
"Beating a well-groomed team at home in a stadium packed with wild and passionate fans is not an easy challenge and that sincerely gives you an idea of what we have in terms of talent," said team manager Phillip Mukui.
With funding from Unicef through the Youth Affairs and Sports ministry and that of Education, over 200 youths were selected in an intensive three-week national scouting programme.
Christmas and New Year present
The best of the programme were brought to Nairobi's centre of excellence, Upper Hill Secondary School, where the final selection was done.
Team captain Bruno Charles "Euro" dedicated the trophy to Kenyans as a Christmas and New Year present.
He said: "On behalf of my team, I dedicate this trophy to all Kenyans and soccer lovers with a message of hope for better future in our country's soccer."
Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch said his office will continue to work closely with Unicef to ensure the current team is nurtured to the realms of professionalism.
"The motivation and determination with which you have played is commendable and I honestly thank you for the efforts made on behalf of the government," said Oluoch.
England's Karen Carney returns for new league from USA
Carney joined Chicago Red Stars from Arsenal in 2009
By Tony Leighton
The new Women's Super League has been boosted by the news that Karen Carney has quit the Chicago Red Stars in the United States to rejoin Birmingham. With England's star player Kelly Smith set to remain at Boston Breakers, Carney will be the Super League's biggest name when it starts next April. An England regular since the age of 17, the 23-year-old winger will also be one of the league's biggest earners. She will be one of the elite players on a salary of £20,000-plus a season. That figure will be paid to the league's major players, while - like most of her England colleagues - Carney also gets £16,000-a-year through a central Football Association contract.
606: DEBATE Can the new league truly take off? Her American club Chicago Red Stars ceased operations last week but the former Arsenal player says the decision to return home was made some time ago. "Chicago knew my intentions a few months ago and I've been talking to Birmingham throughout that time," she told BBC Sport. "Playing in America for the last two years has been a fantastic experience and I could have stayed, because I had offers from one or two clubs to join them. "But my mind was made up to come back to England and to sign for my hometown club in what I think will be a brilliant new league." Carney chose to join her first club Birmingham rather than consider a move back to Arsenal, with whom she won the Uefa Cup as well as all three of the top domestic honours. "I talked only to Birmingham and not to Arsenal, although I had a great time there and they are the most professional club I've ever played for," she added. "But if I was going to come back to England I wanted to be close to home, and I couldn't be any closer than with Blues. "The club have put a very good playing squad together and I'm sure that we'll be competitive in the league." In the eight-team Super League Blues will face Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Chelsea, Doncaster Belles, Everton, Lincoln and Liverpoo
With The FA WSL launching next April, a document has been produced featuring all of the frequently asked questions.

Doncaster Rovers Belles have announced the signing of defender Lyndsey Cunningham from Nottingham Forest LFC.
The England U20 international will end an eleven-year association with hometown club Nottingham Forest when she joins up with the Belles' WSL squad.
Lincoln Ladies FC have announced the signing of a sponsorship agreement with Hillside Medical Supplies.
Based in Newark, Hillside Medical is one of the UK's leading suppliers of medical products. Their sponsorship will support the Club's medical team with their equipment and consumable needs for the first two seasons of the new FA WSL, launching in March 2011.
Lincoln Ladies chairman, Ray Trew, said: "Thanks to Hillside Medical, we're halfway to conforming to the standards The FA have set the Club in terms of medical support. As the Club will be playing at the elite level of the game, we have to provide the team with similar standards to the Premier League Clubs. This is another positive announcement for the Ladies and demonstrates the level of interest in our achievement of Super League status."

Gunners re-sign Chapman
After a brief stint in America with Chicago Red Stars, England Women's international Katie Chapman has re-signed for Arsenal Ladies.
The midfielder had been in the States since February and played in 21 games with the Red Stars, but has cited family reasons for her return to London.
"I'm so excited to be coming back to Arsenal," Chapman told the club's official website. "I've got loads of great memories from my time here and I look forward to creating some more now I've returned. It will be nice to be around my family and the players.
Liverpool Ladies travelled to Madrid on Saturday to begin their preparations for the new Super league season, and came away with plenty of food for thought as goals from the impressive Michelle Evans and Natalie Preston were not enough to prevent the Reds from going down 5-2 to their classy hosts from Atletico Madrid.
The searing heat throughout the afternoon took its toll on the Merseysiders as the game went on, which gave the scoreline a somewhat flattering outlook as the visitors more than held their own in the opening exchanges.
Cheryl Foster and Gemma Watson proved a constant thorn in the Spaniards' rearguard but it was the home side who took the lead inside ten minutes after some slack defending by Liverpool.
Parity was soon restored ten minutes later when Watson and Foster combined after good work from Katie Brussell to work the ball to the left-hand side for the onrushing Evans to finish with aplomb.
The Reds went into the break 2-1 down after Atletico pounced on another defensive error and from then on they never looked back.
With the Liverpool players starting to tire, the home side took full advantage by adding to the scoreline at will throughout the second period.
However, the Reds stuck to their task valiantly and struck a deserved consolation goal with minutes remaining, after Preston turned in a sweetly struck Evans corner.
Liverpool manager Robbie Johnson was disappointed with the result but was keen to emphasise that the trip was a fantastic experience and workout for his team.
"I am disappointed with the result, as you never want to come away with a defeat but I am delighted with the application of the girls considering the conditions. It has also given us an opportunity to test ourselves against top European opposition which will stand us in good stead.
"Trips like this represent a great chance for us to work on things and it is vital we start to create a good feeling within the camp. This weekend gave the team a chance to bond, to get to know each other on and off the pitch which at this stage in our preparation is vital.
"I would also like to thank Atletico for their superb hospitality over the whole three days and we wish them all the best for next season."

Reds Ladies head to Madrid
Liverpool FC Ladies will begin their build-up to the first FA Women's Super League season with a visit to Atlético Madrid on Saturday.
The Reds fly out to the Spanish capital on Friday afternoon to begin their pre-season preparations ahead of the new season getting under way in March next year.
The trip also represents an opportunity to further strengthen the special relationship between the two clubs. The men's teams have met several times during the past two seasons, with Liverpool having also signed Fernando Torres and Maxi Rodríguez from the Spanish club.
Liverpool Ladies Manager, Robbie Johnson, believes the trip will be an ideal opportunity for his side to test themselves against top European opposition:
"The invitation to play the game came from Atlético," he said. "They, like ourselves, seem keen to keep the good relations between the two clubs going and it gives us the chance to test ourselves against foreign opposition.
"Their league (Superliga Femenina) starts in a couple of weeks so this will probably be their last pre-season game and our first.
"It will be a fantastic experience and occasion for the club and one which I am very much looking forward to. It will be a tough fixture seeing as it comes so early in our season, but I'm confident we will give them a good game."

England pair sign for Lincoln
England Internationals Jess Clarke and Sophie Bradley have signed contracts with Lincoln Ladies FC to join the squad that will play in the inaugural Women's FA Super League.
Clarke, a 21 year-old winger, capped a great performance by scoring with a far post header in England's 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Turkey at Walsall last week. She is a product of Leeds' youth system, with 17 full England caps and five international goals.
Sophie Bradley is an FA Centre graduate. The 20-year-old former Leeds Carnegie and Nottingham Forest central defender has captained England at U19 level and had a successful stint in the U23 team before joining the full England squad. The Leeds Carnegie captain was the mainstay of the best defence in last season's Women's Premiership
Both will be joining Lincoln Ladies directly from Leeds Carnegie.
Lincoln Ladies manager Rod Wilson said: "We're delighted to have secured these two valuable players – Jess is a very quick and tricky right winger who I have watched develop over the last six years and Sophie is an extremely dependable defender.

Sophie signs for Belles
Doncaster Rovers Belles have confirmed the signing of England Under-23 international Sophie Walton from Leeds Carnegie LFC.
The versatile 20-year-old can play in both midfield and defence and is a product of the successful Leeds youth system, making her first team debut for the Yorkshire side aged just 15.
Last season she was voted Leeds Carnegie's Player's Player Of The Year, making 28 appearances in all competitions and helping the side lift The FA Women's Premier League Cup Trophy for the first time in the club's history.
Walton has represented England at all development team levels and was part of the U19s squad that were runners-up to Germany at the 2007 European Championship in Iceland, as well as the U20 squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2008 FIFA World Cup.
"I think Doncaster is the ideal and best suited club for me," said Walton. "It was hard to leave Leeds especially due to the circumstances but once I'd spoken to the manager and his staff my mind was made up to come here.
"I know a number of the Belles girls already – Chelsea, Rachel and Margey – which will help me settle in. I can't wait to get started and hope that my experience can help the club compete at the top end of the new FA Women's Super League."
Rovers Belles Manager John Buckley was equally effusive about Walton's arrival.
"We are delighted that we have been able to attract Sophie to the club. She will prove to be an excellent addition to the squad, of that I'm sure.
"Sophie is a versatile, competitive player who is equally at home in defence or midfield. She has a lot of experience for her age having played in major domestic finals and major international competitions. Sophie has good passing ability, she reads the game well and, above all else, is a winner."

Red 'n White
England Women's striker Ellen White has joined Arsenal Ladies from Leeds Carnegie.
White scored 23 goals in 31 games for Leeds last season, including two in The FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup Final win over Everton in February.
The 21-year-old was initially on Arsenal's books as a youngster and left the Gunners at 16 to join London rivals Chelsea, but the move up to Yorkshire was the making of her and White's goals soon propelled her into Hope Powell's senior squad, where she has so far played four times, scoring on two occasions.
"This is a pretty massive deal for me," White told arsenal.com. "Obviously Arsenal Ladies are the biggest women's football team in the country and Europe and pretty much all over the world, so it is a massive move for me. I'm delighted and really excited to get started."
White will help spearhead Arsenal's assault on the inaugural FA Women's Super League which gets underway in March next year and she has also been included in the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Turkey at the end of the month.
With The FA WSL launching next April, a document has been produced featuring all of the frequently asked questions.

Lawro's predictions
Arsenal 2-0 Stoke
Birmingham 2-1 Newcastle
Blackburn 2-1 West Ham
Blackpool 1-2 Tottenham
Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd
Liverpool 2-0 Fulham
Man City 2-0 Everton
Sunderland 2-1 Bolton
West Brom 1-1 Wolves
Wigan 1-2 Aston Villa
Actual results
Arsenal P-P Stoke
Birmingham P-P Newcastle
Blackburn 1-1 West Ham
Blackpool P-P Tottenham
Chelsea P-P Man Utd
Liverpool P-P Fulham
Man City 1-2 Everton
Sunderland 1-0 Bolton
West Brom P-P Wolves
Wigan P-P Aston Villa
A correct result is worth ONE point, a correct score earns THREE points. Last week, with only three Premier League games played because of the weather, Lawro got one result right and no perfect scores. He was beaten 5-1 by Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman. There is no guest this week, or for the games being played on 28 and 29 December, but Lawro will pit his wits against another celebrity predictor ahead of the top-flight matches on 1 and 2 January. PREDICTIONS Kick-offs 1500 GMT unless stated BOXING DAY Fulham v West Ham
This is the second of the three games that West Ham boss Avram Grant apparently needs to win one of to keep his job, after last weekend's draw at Blackburn. It still seems a bit daft to me to put him under more pressure than he already is. The Hammers are up against a Fulham side that have huffed and puffed a lot but have drawn so many games that it is now becoming a problem. They are not that easy to beat, though, especially at home. A draw is not really enough for either side, and West Ham should probably throw the shackles off and go for it a bit in this game - but I'm not sure they will. I can see it being quite tight, and Fulham edging it. Prediction: 2-1 Blackburn v Stoke
Good luck to Steve Kean, who has been made Blackburn manager for the rest of the season. He will know all about their players and the inner workings of the club after working as Sam Allardyce's first team coach since August 2009. I still find the decision to sack Allardyce very, very strange and I am not convinced by whoever is advising Blackburn's new owners on football matters. Sam would have kept Rovers in the Premier League comfortably, which would have guaranteed another £35m-£40m payment next August, and survival has to be the most important thing. Hopefully Kean will be successful but nobody can be sure. He represents a gamble because he has not been a manager before. He only needs one or two key players to have a dip in form, or a couple of suspensions or more injuries like Phil Jones and he could be in trouble. Stoke on the other hand are a good example of how to run, and manage, that sort of Premier League club. Year on year Tony Pulis adapts their style slightly and looks to slowly build on what he has got. They are below Blackburn in the table at the moment, but they will be fine in terms of staying up. I can see this one ending up a draw and, as far as Boxing Day entertainment goes, I don't think it is going to be near the top of the list. Prediction: 1-1 Blackpool v Liverpool
Blackpool have already beaten Liverpool at Anfield this season and there are no secrets about the way they play - they push forward and have a real go at you. However, I just have a sneaking suspicion that this might be an away game that Liverpool actually win, despite their poor form on their travels. In their last couple of away matches, against Tottenham and Newcastle, they have lost but they have been more adventurous and created more chances - and I think they will get opportunities at Bloomfield Road too, especially if Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are involved. Prediction: 1-2
Bolton v West Brom
The real positive for Bolton is that they have got two ways of playing. If they need to, they can load the ball up front to Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander, who look a strong partnership. Or they can play some nice football on the deck. West Brom are a good footballing team too, and they also have a bit of steel, but I just cannot see them getting anything from this one. Prediction: 2-1
Everton v Birmingham
I was at Eastlands on Monday and I thought Everton were very good against Manchester City, and good value for their win, which will be a massive boost to their confidence. Birmingham's away form is a real concern and I don't think it is going to get much better at Goodison Park. Everton boss David Moyes is going to have to make a change up front because Victor Anichebe is suspended but he actually has a little bit of competition for places because he left Yakubu, Jermaine Beckford and Louis Saha on the bench against City. Whoever comes in out of those three is going to be under pressure to perform. Prediction: 2-0 Man Utd v Sunderland
Former United defender Steve Bruce goes back to Old Trafford with his Sunderland side on a really good run. They have always promised more than they have delivered in the past, and now that promise has turned into good results and good performances. However, this is a United team that is getting to the stage of the season where they usually kick on. Bruce will probably go there and attack them, but he has got a few injuries to contend with too and it might be asking too much of his side to expect anything here. Prediction: 2-0 Newcastle v Man City
I watched City on Monday against Everton and that was the worst I'd seen them defensively. As a unit I thought they were very average. But I know their manager Roberto Mancini had to change his midfield a bit and he didn't have the protective players that he normally has in front of his defence, so I think he will probably revert to that kind of approach at St James' Park. It will be interesting to watch Mario Balotelli up front for City. He has got masses of ability, but what Mancini should do is chuck him some tapes of some of the great players so he can watch how hard they work. You cannot get by just doing what he does, which seems to entail him saying 'give me the ball, I am brilliant'. He has to start working for the team, which he didn't do against Everton. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has come out this week and said the likes of Andy Carroll and Joey Barton are staying, which they simply have to do if they are going to stay up - if they sell Carroll, for example, then they might as well accept relegation. The club is still for sale and, if I were interested in buying it, I'd rather buy it with those two there and Kevin Nolan too. If all three do stay, it's almost a guarantee of staying up and of getting the money that brings. Magpies owner Mike Ashley will know that as well, so I think he will keep them. Prediction: 1-1 Wolves v Wigan
Wolves showed great spirit to beat Birmingham last week and they might have one or two more players coming back from injury now to help them here. They will know that this game is winnable and I think if you get into Wigan and make them hurry, then you beat them. Wolves are a side that can do that. I don't fancy Wigan much here but they have still surprised me a little bit this season. They are in the bottom three but at times they have still done better than I thought they would. Prediction: 2-0 Aston Villa v Tottenham (1730 GMT)
This is a Tottenham team that just takes sides on, full stop. They have a lot of attacking options on the bench - better than any other side in the Premier League - but, defensively they can have a bad day. Villa boss Gerard Houllier changed things around a little bit in their last game, against West Brom, and will have been boosted by winning that - they badly needed it. Spurs remain on the fringes of the title race, and I just think the demands of the Champions League with the amount of games they have to play, means they will be found a little bit short in terms of making the top four. Prediction: 2-1 MONDAY Arsenal v Chelsea (2000 GMT)
I know Chelsea beat them earlier in the season but I'm going to go for an Arsenal win this time. I think it is about time they beat Chelsea because it's been a couple of years since that happened. The last time Chelsea played, against Tottenham, they were better in the second half, but it is going to take them a while to get back to their best form after such a poor run and Arsenal are good enough to punish them for that. Frank Lampard may be able to start for Chelsea, but it is the same sort of thing with him - he cannot be anywhere near fully match fit after so long out injured. Prediction: 2-1 Lawro was talking to BBC Sport's Chris Bevan.
