Uefa executive condemns English FA as the 'weakest' in Europe

• William Gaillard hits out at power of the Premier League
• Sports minister also attacks football's governance

William Gaillard, one of Uefa's most prominent executives, has branded the Football Association the "weakest" in Europe and stated that it should adopt the Dutch model of governance while appointing a technical director.
Gaillard, who is the chief adviser to Uefa's president, Michel Platini, was speaking before the parliamentary culture, media and sport committee, which is inquiring into football governance. He said: "There is no doubt that turf wars have damaged English football and the FA is probably in a weaker spot than any other FA in Europe – probably [as] the result of the overwhelming power of professional football especially as expressed by the Premier League and Football League.
"In other countries there is a more balanced situation. In most other countries the professional game has a minority position. English professional football has been enormously successful in producing revenues and building up the game and we have to be grateful to the Premier League and Football League for that. At the same time this has not resulted in a better situation for English football in general and performances of the national team have not been outstanding."
Gaillard believes Holland's emphasis on developing players' technical skills from an early age and allowing them a freedom to make mistakes could form the ideal template for English football to follow. "[It's] an excellent grassroots model," he said. "The FA should have a full-time technical director – that's what exists in most other good educational models in Europe."
Gaillard's claims were also echoed by Hugh Robertson, the sports minister, who reiterated his belief that football is the poorest run of the country's major sports. "The fact is when I looked at the corporate governance operations in sports, particularly the big five, it was noticeably worse than in any other sport. There are no independent nonexecutive directors [at the FA] despite the Burns review. Every single one of the directors is a white male and late middle-aged and there is no one who has played the game to any reasonable level and no women or anyone from the ethnic communities.
"For the 2018 World Cup bid £15m was spent and we succeeded solely in garnering one extra vote other than our own. The chairman of the Football Foundation [Clive Sherling] resigned in despair at the politicking going on around the game. The evidence is pretty clear."
Sherling, a businessman who was formerly chairman of the Football Licensing Authority, stepped down earlier this year after 18 months in the job.
Meanwhile, the committee member Damian Collins, MP for Folkestone and Hythe, said the fact neither the FA nor the Football League knew who owned Leeds was a "fairly shambolic state of affairs".
The FA has sent a clarification to the committee admitting it does not know the identities of the people behind the three offshore trusts that own the Championship club.
Robertson agreed that the rules should be changed to force transparency of ownership. The minister said: "It's patently absurd that people save up every week to go through the turnstiles and cannot find out who owns the club.
"It's perfectly reasonable for fans to expect to know who the owners are of their football club and that's something that should be corrected sooner rather than later."

Manchester United achieved an ambition in Gelsenkirchen that went far beyond the defeat of a Schalke side who have already outdone themselves by getting this far. With victory in the tie already certain, Sir Alex Ferguson's side will enter a third Champions League final in four years. It is that sort of consistent impact the manager has craved.
The knowhow in the ranks has deepened and United were calm and business-like. The raucousness of the ground was still impressive in periods but these supporters generated it out of stubbornness rather than hope. Raúl González did cause a moment of concern as he moved towards the ball at the near post early in the second half but the attentions of Rio Ferdinand eliminated the danger.
It is absurd to realise that there is little more to be said about Schalke's display. Their rout of Internazionale will never be forgotten but it is just as clear that the aberration by the Serie A club was on a grand scale. There is no comparison to be drawn with the quarter-final a year ago, when Bayern Munich eclipsed United.
Ferguson has had some nights of misery against German opposition but this encounter hardly deserves a place in the chronicle of such struggles. Had candour been permissible when the draw was made for quarter-finals and semi-finals, the manager would have expressed joy over an outcome that now has Barcelona and Real Madrid tearing at one another.
No matter what lies ahead, there will be resilience to aid United. The figures click round and the team have now won 11 of their last 13 away matches in this competition. They have also created a record by not conceding an away goal in an entire Champions League campaign. They are well-drilled but there is much more than that in the repertoire, and the domination of Schalke hardly paused.
Beforehand it was established that Benedikt Höwedes, the Bundesliga side's centre-half, had not recovered from an abdominal strain. Now, at least, he will not be so tormented at missing the game. Schalke froze or simply found themselves outmatched. For United converting their chances was the sole piece of tricky business.
If the side were entirely assured, they owed much to familiarity with these nights and their demands. The starting line-up varied by only one name from the selection for the victory at Chelsea in the quarter-final. Even that adjustment could be deemed invisible since the Da Silva brothers are identical twins. It was Fábio who made the side in Gelsenkirchen, at right-back.
The identity of United's defenders was not a topic for urgent discussion when the side enjoyed such command that the presence in the opposition ranks of a striker as admired as Raúl almost passed unnoticed. The Schalke support had their eyes and hopes pinned on the splendid goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. They applauded him as he left the pitch at the interval, despite the disgruntlement over his expected move to Bayern Munich in the summer.
The United figure hungriest initially to overcome him was Javier Hernández. His eagerness to score entailed excellent movement and Schalke were left appealing without cause when Park Ji-sung put him clear in the 14th minute. The angle was tight, however, and Neuer dealt with the finish.
Once the effort has been made to set aside the drubbing of Inter, it is possible to recognise Schalke as no more or less than a fairly balanced side. In the knockout phase, however, they have not kept a clean sheet in any of their five matches.
Perhaps it was spirit that kept them going in the first half, when a range of chances ended with a marginally miscalculated attempt or a response from Neuer. The goalkeeper, in different moments, had even denied a header and a shot by Giggs, who was nominally a holding midfielder.
United may have lacked a goal in those 45 minutes but the craving only intensified when the game resumed. The action had barely got going again when a cross from the Welshman allowed Michael Carrick a header that Neuer reached. Within moments Giggs himself sent a raking effort beyond the far post.
It would be the persistent Giggs who put his side into the lead after 67 minutes. He was released by an excellent reverse pass from Wayne Rooney and slipped home the finish with ease. Two minutes later the striker himself extended the advantage by capitalising alertly after a run by Hernández.
Anticlimax had become inevitable for Schalke. This is a large stadium in the Ruhr, an area with the type of industrial history that gives rise to populaces besotted with football. The people in the ground yearned to register their presence as a force but the players they cheered could not be raised to United's level, even by so uplifting an atmosphere.

Semi-final first leg: Schalke 0-2 Manchester United

Five talking points from Schalke v Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson can depend on Fábio, Nani is not always necessary and Michael Owen may as well pack his bags now

Fábio was playing at right-back in the absence of John O'Shea and Rafael but he proved he can cope at the highest level. Photograph: Jamie Mcdonald/Getty Images

1 Is there time for United to gazump Bayern Munich?

There was only one reason why the score was kept respectable and his name was Manuel Neuer. There were periods in this match when the Germany international looked like someone could toss a handful of pebbles in the air and he would pluck every single one from the sky. What a pity it is for United that he seems a near-certainty to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season because, whoever Sir Alex Ferguson signs to replace Edwin van der Sar this summer, this was an evening that left the unmistakable sense that Neuer – by all accounts, the first choice of United's goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele – should be regarded as the best man for the job. It is rare for a team to have so many chances in a Champions League tie and the night would have been even more of an ordeal for Schalke if their goalkeeper had not produced what could legitimately be considered one of the outstanding individual performances of this season's competition.
2 Fábio belongs at this level

Here was the biggest game of his life and the 20-year-old played with a calm that made you think back to 1999 and Ferguson's description of Paul Scholes, in the quarter-final against Internazionale in Milan, going "into that cauldron as calmly as someone popping round the corner for a newspaper." Fábio was quick to the ball, eager to break forward and, all in all, he demonstrated why, when he signed for the club, United's coaching staff rated him as marginally more accomplished than his twin Rafael. Whether he can keep his place remains to be seen (he was playing here because John O'Shea was injured and Rafael not fully fit) but, on this evidence, United's supporters need not feel too concerned by the presence of such an inexperienced player on the right of defence. United's defence have not conceded an away goal in Europe for 384 days since Bayern Munich's Ivica Olic scored against them in the quarter-finals last season and Fábio played a considerable part. It felt like the night he truly arrived as a Manchester United footballer.
3 The team can cope without Nani

There is every chance Nani, with nine Premier League goals and 18 assists, will collect the Sir Matt Busby player-of-the-year award for United next month, but his form over the previous eight months was still not enough to merit a place here – and it was difficult afterwards to quibble with Ferguson's thinking. Antonio Valencia's return has been so seamless it is easy sometimes to forget the mangled state of his leg when he broke it in two places last September. On the left, Park Ji-sung was an elusive opponent, chasing back, running with the ball, finding space. United's width was a significant reason for their dominance and, if everything goes smoothly at Old Trafford in the second leg, that leaves Nani with the serious possibility of being excluded from the final, too. Nani has been United's star performer for large swathes of the season but his form has dipped since Valencia came back into the reckoning – perhaps not coincidentally.
4 Owen may have to accept the inevitable

You wonder what Michael Owen was thinking, watching the match in his suit, seeing all those chances going begging throughout the opening hour. Even with the injured Dimitar Berbatov back in Manchester recovering, it spoke volumes that Ferguson did not feel Owen merited a place on the bench. There were three defenders among United's substitutes and not one striker and Owen must be growing wearily accustomed to these kind of snubs by now. He is out of contract at the end of the season and it would be almost a shock now if he were to be offered a new deal to stay at Old Trafford.
5 Schalke surely cannot be this ordinary again

Or can they? It was perplexing to think this was the same side that had put seven past the 2010 champions, Internazionale, over the two legs of their quarter-final. United were the superior team in every department. Let's not overlook the fact Schalke scored five times when they went to San Siro – but that is starting to feel like it was a one-off. At Old Trafford, under the floodlights, the second leg is surely now a mere formality.

José Mourinho's mind games finally provoke response from Pep Guardiola

• Real Madrid manager accuses Guardiola of criticising referees
• Guardiola responds but promises to concentrate on football

This time it's personal. Barcelona's coach, Josep Guardiola, finally exploded, sending a year of pent-up anger and frustration gushing forth as he responded to José Mourinho on the eve of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
The question now is whether Mourinho will feel that he has won the mental battle, dragging Guardiola into territory that is not his own, or if Guardiola will feel a release at having at last had his say. And what a say it was. The days of a respectful silence, of turning the other cheek, are definitively over. This was more like the aggressive weigh-in before a prize fight, complete with an air of "you and me outside".
Mourinho had pricked Guardiola's pride once too often by accusing him of complaining about referees who get decisions right. It was an accusation that Guardiola, normally so measured, was not prepared to let pass – the last straw after a year that has been a war of attrition. Guardiola was finally drawn into battle. "He called me Pep, so I answered," Guardiola said at the end of a breathtaking 45 minutes. "Normally, he talks in general terms about a team, a club or a manager, but this time he named me. If he says: 'Pep,' I say: 'Hey, José.'"
He said more than "hey". Sitting down in the press room at the Santiago Bernabéu, he said: "As Mourinho has spoken so candidly about me and spoken about me by name, and usingtú [the informal form of you], then I will do the same." He then asked which of the gathered cameras was "Mourinho's camera" and began.
"Tomorrow at 8.45 we will play a match on the field," Guardiola said. " Outside of the field, he has won the entire year, the entire season and in the future [it will be the same]. He can have his personal Champions League outside the field. Fine. Let him enjoy it, I'll give him that. Butthis is a game. When it comes to sport we will play and sometimes we will win, sometimes we will lose. We are happy with smaller victories, trying to get the world to admire us and we are very proud of this.
"I can give you an immense list of things [that we could complain about]: 300,000 things. We could remember Stamford Bridge and another thousand things but I do not have that many people working for me. Secretaries and referees and people writing stuff. So tomorrow, 8.45pm, we will take to the field and we will try to play football as best as possible.
"In this room [Real Madrid's press room], he is the chief, the ****ing man. In here he is the ****ing man and I can't compete with him. If Barcelona want someone who competes with that, then they should look for another manager. But we, as a person and an institution, don't do that. I could talk about [Olegario] Bequerença [the referee from last season's Barcelona-Inter semi-final first leg], about the offside goal from Diego Milito or the penalty of [Dani] Alves, but I don't. Well, until tonight!
"If you think after three years, that I always moan, always make excuses and always complain, then there is nothing I can do about that.
Mourinho had provoked Guardiola by referring to comments his rival made after Madrid's victory in the Copa del Rey final last week. Guardiola had noted that his side had been close to winning: had a Pedro goal not been ruled out for a very close but correct offside, described by the coach as "the linesman's good eyesight", Barcelona might have taken the trophy.
"A new era has begun," Mourinho said on Tuesday. "Until now there were two groups of coaches. One very, very small group of coaches that don't speak about refs and then a big group of coaches, of which I am part, who criticise the refs when they have mistakes – people like me who don't control their frustration but also people who are happy to value a great job from a ref.
"Now there is a third group, which is only [Guardiola], that criticises referees when they get decisions right! There is a new meaning to [football] now. In his first season [Guardiola] lived the scandal of Stamford Bridge [in the semi-final], last year he played against a 10-man Inter. Now he is not happy with refs getting it right. I am not asking the referee to help my team. If the referee is good everyone will be happy – except Guardiola. He wants them to get it wrong."
Guardiola worked with Mourinho at Barcelona but considers their relationship to be shattered by this. "We worked together for four years. He knows me, I know him and that's all. If he wants to go by things written after the Copa del Rey by friends from the written press or Florentino Pérez, with his milkmaid's tales, then fine. If that matters more than our relationship, then that's up to him. I am not going to justify my words. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth when someone you had a relationship with does [what he has done]. I always thought that when people didn't understand me, it was because I had explained myself badly, but now I don't. I said the referee [in the cup final] had been smart and very attentive. I said it was right. I pointed out simply that the result can be down to small things, that's all. It was not a complaint. After victory I congratulated Real Madrid and that is what Barcelona does. We congratulated RM for the cup that they won on the field against a team that I represent proudly."
Asked if this was just a tactic, Guardiola replied: "What? You think my players will run around more because I looked for Mourinho's camera? It's a semi-final!"

Kuwaona U-23, The Kobs shilingi 1,000

Villa Squad wanung'unikia uchaguzi

A night when Stoke City demonstrated the full range of their qualities with a superb performance in front of the Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, was overshadowed by a potentially serious injury to Matthew Etherington, which threatens to rule him out of the FA Cup final. Etherington was taken down the tunnel on a stretcher in the first half after he pulled up clutching his left hamstring and will have a scan Wednesday morning to determine the damage.
With only 17 days until Stoke's Wembley date against City, Etherington's hopes of making up for the disappointment he suffered in the 2006 final, when he finished with a runners-up medal after Liverpool defeated West Ham on penalties, appear slim. There was more miserable news for Stoke earlier on Tuesday when Ricardo Fuller was ruled out for the rest of the season, after it was confirmed the Jamaican ruptured an achilles tendon at Aston Villa last Saturday.
At least this result, which lifts Stoke to ninth and secures their Premier League status for another season, provided some encouragement for the home fans. Ahead through Kenwyne Jones's fourth goal in four matches, Stoke added a second through Ryan Shawcross before the night's outstanding performer, Jermaine Pennant, completed the scoring with a third just after half-time to deepen Wolverhampton Wanderers' relegation fears.
Tony Pulis felt that Stoke's first-half display was as good as he had seen from his team in the Premier League, but he was unable to conceal the disappointment he felt at seeing Etherington collapse in agony in the 29th minute before being carried around the perimeter of the pitch in obvious discomfort. "Matty's a massive disappointment for us. We don't know the extent of the injury until he has a scan [in the morning]," the Stoke manager said.
"But we'll do our damnedest to make sure [he's available]. He's got 17 days yet. The first week is obviously very important that we get it sorted out. At least he has got 10 days after that to get it as strong as he can to play in the final. Having lost Ricardo and Danny Higginbotham as well, it's a massive blow for the football club because we haven't got the resources that Man City have got. It would have been tough enough with our best players available."
While this was a sobering night for Etherington, the winger on the opposite flank enjoyed his most productive outing in a Stoke shirt and deservedly walked away with the man-of-the-match award. Pennant, who has failed to live up to expectations for much of his career, was irrepressible as he wreaked havoc on the right. He set up Jones's goal with a sublime cross that the striker headed beyond Hennessey and took the corner that led to Shawcross tapping in the second.
In between those two goals, Pennant created further chances for Andy Wilkinson, Dean Whitehead and Shawcross as he tormented Wolves before embellishing a fine night's work by scoring his second goal of the season, with a shot that deflected off Richard Stearman and looped into the top corner. "Jermaine was fantastic," Pulis said. "He's got the bit between his teeth like the rest of them and his stats prove how hard he works. It's fantastic to say that about someone who people told me was a lazy player."
Wolves were abject and look like a team destined for the Championship on this evidence. They were unable to cope with Stoke's tempo and outplayed in every department as they slipped to a third defeat in four matches that leaves them second from bottom. "Wayne Hennessey played well and I think I would stop there," Mick McCarthy, the Wolves manager, said. "That's as poor as we have played. We have been beaten by a far better team tonight."

Edin Dzeko claims Fernando Torres inspired him to break League duck

• Manchester City striker says he never doubted himself
• Torres also scored first goal for Chelsea after £50m move

Edin Dzeko insists he never lost faith that he would finally get off the mark following his £27.5m move to Manchester City in January, with Fernando Torres's inaugural strike on Saturday for Chelsea proving an inspiration.
Dzeko opened his account in his 10th Premier League appearance for Roberto Mancini's side with the 75th-minute goal that gave City a crucial 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers yesterday. This strengthened City's hold on fourth position, with the lead over Tottenham Hotspur now four points. Each side has five games left to play.
"Never have I doubted myself because I know what I am capable of," the former Wolfsburg striker said. "I just needed to work hard and I know everything will come back for me. I started slowly when I was in the Bundesliga so this is nothing new for me. The new season [next season] will be the time for me.
"It was my first goal and a very important one for the team, so I'm very happy. A striker's job is to take [his] chances to score. I got one chance and I scored it so that's great for me.
"Nobody is happy when they're not playing. I think the worst is now behind me and this game is a new beginning for me at City. For every striker it's important to have some crosses, sometimes they come, sometimes not. But I got one [for my goal]. I'm ready to work hard and I promise the fans they will see a lot of goals for me in the future.
"The first goal is always very important. OK, I scored in the FA Cup and the Europa League [before] but when you keep reading about how I hadn't scored in the Premier League, the pressure starts to build. But now it's come and that's important."
Torres's goal came against West Ham United on Saturday after 732 minutes without breaking his duck for Chelsea following his £50m move in January from Liverpool. Asked if this had inspired him, Dzeko said: "Yes, of course I saw it. I am happy as well for him because I know how it is when you don't score. He was playing for Liverpool for four years and scored a lot of goals, then he changed clubs and can't score. I know that's what can happen in football."
Regarding the hopes of City qualifying for the first time for the Champions League the Bosnian hinted that the club may yet be able to catch Arsenal, who are third and five points ahead having played a game more. He said: "Spurs [have] lost points, Arsenal did too. Now we have a home game and we'll see if we can take advantage."

Gérard Houllier unlikely to return to management for Aston Villa

Gérard Houllier is expected to make a decision about his future at the end of the season but it looks increasingly likely that he will not be seen in frontline management again. The Aston Villa manager has been in hospital since last Wednesday, when he was admitted with chest pains, and although his condition has improved and he is set to be discharged within the next few days, there are major doubts about whether he will return to the dugout.
Gary McAllister, Houllier's assistant, will take charge of the team for the remaining four matches of the season, as the Frenchman undergoes a period of convalescence, which will initially be spent in bed at home. Mark Waller, Villa's club doctor, said that Houllier's heart is "working perfectly", although it has also emerged that the cause of his chest pains – a dissection of the descending aorta – is related to the major health scare he suffered in 2001, when he underwent 11 hours of open-heart surgery after being taken ill during his time as Liverpool manager.
Villa are in a difficult position. The club are understandably keen to avoid putting any pressure on the 63-year-old Frenchman, yet they also need to know whether he is likely to be in a position to continue in the long term. The club will wait until he has recovered before holding talks and, although McAllister has suggested the former Lyon manager will be desperate to come back, Houllier will be guided by the medical advice he receives.
In a statement released by the club on Tuesday night Houllier expressed his gratitude to those who have wished him well in his recovery. It is understood that the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, who is a good friend, has been among his visitors. "I am extremely touched by all the messages I have received and by the reaction of people throughout the world of football. It has been overwhelming actually. I'm especially grateful to the Villa fans for their genuine concern and encouragement and to the fans of clubs up and down the country. There has been a groundswell of goodwill and I appreciate this so much.
"I'm grateful to my players for their texts and messages and, of course, for their efforts in extending our recent unbeaten run on Saturday against Stoke and also to Gary McAllister and the rest of my staff – the team behind the team – for stepping in and taking the reins at this time. I'm grateful, too, to my managerial colleagues who have taken the time to get in touch with me.
"You need to know that the care I have received at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been first-class and I am in the debt of the medical staff whose expertise and human touch has helped me through these past six days. My condition is improving and extremely encouraging. Dr Mark Waller, the club's doctor, is better placed to explain things from a medical viewpoint, so suffice to say again that I am very moved by the fact that so many people have me in their thoughts just now."
Waller said: "Gérard was admitted to hospital on Wednesday last week after complaining of chest pain. The cause of his chest pain was a dissection of the descending aorta. All the tests have confirmed that his heart is working perfectly. We are extremely encouraged by Gérard's improvement over the past six days and we now anticipate that he will be discharged from the coronary care unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital within the next three to four days."

Real, Barca mbinu ndani nje Send to a friend Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:52

MADRID, Hispania

U-23 yaahidi ushindi Send to a friend Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:52
