Liverpool owners have already begun search for Hodsgon's permanent replacement

Roy Hodgson last night edged closer to the Anfield exit as the club's American owners began the search for his successor.
Hodgson is on the brink going into today's clash with Bolton and John W Henry and Tom Werner want to have a replacement lined up if they decide to wield the axe.
They are reluctant to name a caretaker boss, such as the Kop's hero Kenny Dalglish, and would prefer to make a permanent appointment.
Henry and Werner want a young, dynamic manager and have started drawing up their shortlist, which is believed to include Owen Coyle, Frank Rijkaard, Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp and Porto boss Andre Villa Boas.
As they launched their search, the beleaguered Hodgson apologised to Liverpool fans for his attack on the Kop.
Henry and Werner were unimpressed by Hodgson's dig at the supporters for turning on him during the defeat to Wolves and the Reds boss has been shocked by the backlash against him.
Hodgson cut a contrite figure yesterday as he insisted he had not meant to offend anyone with his jibes that the "famous Anfield support hasn't really been there" and that "fans should be supporters".
He said: "I'm disappointed with that and I certainly regret if I have offended them in any way. It was no way meant to be an offensive comment on my part. In fact, it was a purely defensive comment.
"I'm fully aware that to get the best out of that support, you have to give them something to look forward to supporting and we certainly didn't do that on Wednesday night. I would have been very surprised if the reaction had been any different to what it was.
"I hope there is no backlash against me because I didn't set out to attack the fans. I had to answer the question about how I felt about being the butt of their jeers and whilst empathising with them, I also tried to defend my position."
Hodgson will discover at 3pm today if the Kop have accepted his apology when he walks out for Liverpool's showdown with Bolton and he insists he can win the fans over.
"Everything is retrievable if the team plays well," he said. "That's the bottom line.
"Fans want to see their team win and we've got to start winning. We've got to start playing well again and if we do, I'm sure the fans will be happy with what they see."
Despite being on the brink at Liverpool, Hodgson accepts the intense pressure and claims the club's success is more important than his future.
"It's my job to get on with it and do my best possible not to allow individual or personal matters, like my own future, to get in the way of what is most important," he said. "And that is Liverpool winning football matches."

Despite what the Kop's anthem may say, Roy Hodgson claims he is walking alone as he fights to keep his job.
Hodgson has lifted the lid on his own personal turmoil at Liverpool's woeful season and revealed he has never felt so lonely as a coach.
Nobody at Liverpool, from the owners to the players, is happy with our situation, admits Hodgson
Sure, he's got his family and they are a great support to him in these most difficult of times.
But ultimately he says he has spent hours brooding on his own as he tries to figure out how to turn around Liverpool's worst campaign for 57 years.
"It's a lonely job being a manager of a top club," said the beleaguered Reds boss. "Your family is very important at these times and they try and encourage you that life isn't all doom and gloom, that there might be a bright spot somewhere along the way. That's what you have to cling on to.
"It would be nice to have people around who could help you a bit more, but it doesn't really work that way.
"You can't expect people to help you too much. The staff are very good and supportive and so are the players, but is is lonely.
"Two defeats in a row, and one of them coming at home against a team everyone expects you to beat, is a bad time. You're going to be very hurt and upset about everything.
"I certainly cannot emphasise enough that it hurts me deeply, it hurts my professional pride. I feel very bad and very down, but I have to accept it.
"Lonely is not the wrong word to use because to be quite honest you don't want company anyway. You want to be left alone with your thoughts, which are not pleasant thoughts, but you don't have the desire to do anything but sit around with those thoughts."

Liverpool to beat Real Madrid to £15m French defensive midfielder

Liverpool are ready to beat Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid to the £15m signing of France star Yann M'Vila.
Director of football Damien Comolli has identified the Rennes defensive midfielder as a central player in the rebuilding of the Reds.
And the Anfield club's American owners are prepared to spend now in a bid to help Roy Hodgson's struggling side.
M'Vila, 20, just missed out on World Cup selection but has played all five games under new coach Laurent Blanc, including the 2-1 victory over England at Wembley.
Real Madrid have also contacted Rennes about the player who is under contract until 2014.
Last month M'Vila insisted he would still be at Rennes next year but added: "I could leave at any moment. I feel I am ready for anything."
M'Vila's Rennes team-mate Sylvain Marveauz, who is out of contract at the end of the season, was at Anfield on Wednesday night to watch the defeat to Wolves.

Hleb took a 'mental beating' at Barca, reveals McLeish

Alex McLeish believes Alex Hleb went through a "mental beating" at Barcelona as the Birmingham midfielder aims to gun down his old team Arsenal today.
The Belarus midfielder was one of the Gunners' crown jewels until he was plucked away by Spanish giants Barca for £14.5million in 2008.
However, the 29-year-old endured a torrid time at the Nou Camp and was farmed out to Blues on a season-long loan after becoming surplus to requirements.
As yet, the midfielder has failed to hit the heights he managed for the Gunners and, as revealed in Mirror Sport, Hleb was even paid a personal visit by Belarus coach Bernd Stange to probe his poor form.
"He took a bit of a beating mentally with the Barcelona experience," said McLeish. "And he's only human after all, so he'll have emotions as well.
"But we have worked hard with him to try to get him to a level where he is at the top fitness levels because we know what he can bring on the pitch.
"I never spoke to him about it but I think Alex himself said that he's got to rebuild his confidence.
"We just automatically think that these players can just walk out onto the pitch, but if it was that easy we would sign (Zinedine) Zidane at the moment.
"Earlier in the season when I left him out for a couple of games, he thought he should be playing in the team. But he wasn't fully fit and you risk losing him for longer then.
"Plus he risks his reputation as a top quality player. We had to get him to a level of sharpness and fitness that allows him to perform.
"He's just a guy with two legs like you and me. We need to work together and build up people's confidence and trust."
Hleb has made just eight league starts this term with his only goal for Blues coming in the Carling Cup against MK Dons.
But McLeish is adamant Blues can see still see the best of the Belarus ace.
"He's not 100 per cent fully fit," he added. "If we can get him nearly to that level then we would be looking heavily to rely on in the second half of the season with what he can do with the ball and the way he can open up spaces. It is a gift.
"It would have been a bit of a culture shock for Alex to come from Barcelona and Arsenal to play football that sometimes is difficult to imagine.
"I think we've got some good players that can pass it well but we are not at that level. But he can help us to progress."

Two London rivals clash with wins vital for differing reasons.
Tottenham extended their unbeaten run, in all competitions, to 10 games with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Tuesday, and are now in fourth place.

They are now just five points behind leaders Manchester United and another victory would put pressure on their rivals.
Fulham, meanwhile, are in the relegation zone despite their 2-0 win at Stoke in midweek.
The win was rare; it was their first away from home in 27 attempts, going back to the start of last season.
But their record at White Hart Lane is poor. In a total of 31 league visits, they have won just twice, in the Premier League in September 2002, and in the old Second Division in April 1948. Spurs have won 17 and drawn 12.
Spurs, though, will be without Jermain Defoe, serving the second game of a three match ban, and Younes Kaboul, who is suspended following his ‘stupid' red card in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.
William Gallas could return if passed fit from a hamstring problem, but Tom Huddlestone, Ledley King, Jamie O'Hara and Jonathan Woodgate are all still missing.
Fulham recalled Chris Baird at Stoke and he responded with two early goals in the 2-0 win over the Potters, so he should keep his place ahead of the dropped Carlos Salcido.

Burnley will turn to Mackay if Allardyce says no

Burnley will move for Watford boss Malky Mackay - if Sam Allardyce does not take the chance of a return to management.
The Clarets are poised to approach highly-rated Scot Mackay in the next few days as they look for Brian Laws's successor and turn to a potential 'new Owen Coyle.'
Mackay has come up through the ranks as a coach at Watford and has taken the cash-conscious outfit into the play-off picture while playing good football.
A move to Burnley, who have a bigger squad and more finance, could appeal to Mackay who has similarities to former boss Coyle in style and approach.
Mackay is also aware that Watford could be taken over shortly, putting his own position in jeopardy, so the time of the Burnley interest may suit him.
If Mackay is interested he could be named ahead of Allardyce, who put feelers out for the post after Laws was sacked and has also been sounded out about his interest.
However Burnley want a quick answer and the former Blackburn Rovers boss is yet to oblige as he considers all of his options and waits for other offers at home and abroad.

Ancelotti slams dressing room split rumours as 'total balls'

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he loves live in England because even a Chelsea-supporting copper refused to let him off a fine.
The Double winning coach has been nicked three times in 18 months here for talking on his telephone while driving.
Back home in Italy, his fame and fortune could have seen him talk his way out of a penalty.
But Ancelotti said: "Here the rules are respected. Life is simpler. If you respect the rules, you don't have any problems. If you don't, they come down on you. I have been given three fines because I was on the telephone while driving.
"Once the fine was given to me by a policeman who was a Chelsea fan who even wanted to have his photo taken with me. I tried to take advantage by asking him to let me off the fine. No chance!"
Chelsea are struggling down in fourth place after a run of six games without a Premier League victory before Wednesday's victory over Bolton.
But he insisted talk of a French-English split in the dressing room was "total balls. The group is the same as last year and is united and solid. It is the opposite of what people say."
And Ancelotti insisted he had come under no pressure from owner Roman Abramovich.
"I swear - I have never felt his breath on my back," he stated.
He was then asked by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, if he were given the choice, who he would throw off a tower: Abramovich or his former AC Milan boss and Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi?
Ancelotti joked: "They both go down together or it certainly won't be me who pushes them. When at the end of my career, I am asked about Berlusconi and Abramovich, I will reply that I coached Milan and Chelsea, two of the biggest clubs in the world, and they gave me the chance to do it. Yes, of course, you can have discussions, but at the end you remember only the good things."
Ancelotti is also waiting to be invited to meet other royalty at Buckingham Palace.
"I haven't been asked yet," he added. "Last year I met the Italian ambassador. Then nothing more. For the Queen, I have to wait."

Hull move for Villa keeper after missing out on Arsenal star

Hull City boss Nigel Pearson is signing Aston Villa's United States keeper Brad Guzan on loan - after losing out on Veto Mannone.
Guzan will join the Tigers for some first-team action after demanding to go out of Villa where he is second choice behind Brad Friedel.

Freddie Ljungberg agrees short-term deal with Celtic
Ljungberg trained with Celtic this week and has now agreed a short-term deal
Former Arsenal forward Freddie Ljungberg has passed a medical and agreed a deal with Celtic until the end of the season.
The Swedish midfielder is now in line to make his debut at Ibrox in Sunday's Old Firm Derby against Rangers.
The 33-year-old has been training with Celtic and boss Neil Lennon said: "He's done very well in the two days we've seen him. I've been very impressed.
"I've seen more than enough to know he would be a good addition."
Celtic have called a 1000 GMT media conference for New Year's Eve to unveil the player ahead of the crucial derby with their Glasgow rivals on 2 January.
Ljungberg, who made his name at Arsenal, is leaving Chicago Fire after an 18-month spell in the United States.
"There's a bit of hunger about Freddie," added Lennon. "He's a consistent player and has been for a long time.
"He had horrendous injury problems at West Ham but he went to America and got sorted out medically. He's in very good condition."
Speaking earlier this week midfielder Niall McGinn, whose place in the team would be under threat from Ljungberg, said he had also been impressed by the Swede.
"He is a player I looked up to when I was younger and he looked sharp in training," said the Northern Irishman.
"He's a versatile player, he can play on either side and play in the hole as well.
"But I'm in the team and it's up to me to stay in the team. The manager has shown faith in me.
"You are playing for a massive club and, if the manager brings in players, you have to work around that.
"I've been here for two years and I've seen a lot of players leave and a lot of players come in.
"I have to make the most of any opportunity I get, but the manager seems to trust me.
"I've had a few injuries, but when I've come back, he has shown faith in me and I've done well."

Ancelotti refused to show players video of Arsenal defeat to avoid destroying morale

Carlo Ancelotti spared his Chelsea flops a trial by video because he did not want to damage their fragile morale.
Blues godfather Ancelotti took pity on the champions by ditching his customary post-match DVD analysis following Chelsea's 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, admitting: "When the moment is not good, you don't have to kill them."
The Italian was rewarded for his softly-softly approach with Chelsea's first three-point haul in the Premier League since November 10, a flimsy 1-0 win against Bolton.
If Florent Malouda's winner against the Trotters was a merciful release from the Blues' spluttering form, it was also vindication of Ancelotti's decision to ditch his video inquest after the Emirates horror show.
And as a supplementary confidence-booster, Chelsea could not wish for more submissive visitors to Stamford Bridge tomorrow than Aston Villa, who are in freefall after scrambling just seven points from a possible 24.
Villa have shipped 17 goals on their last four visits to the Bridge, and with manager Gerard Houllier under mounting pressure Ancelotti should be eyeing a return to the thick of the title race beneath that arched left eyebrow.
The Chelsea boss said last night: "I do not make New Year resolutions - only to try and do my best.
"But I did resolve not show the team the video of our game at Arsenal. I normally do go through it with the players, but when the moment is not so good you don't have to kill them!
"I can show them where they went wrong in the future, but not now. You have to take into consideration the atmosphere in the squad - it is important to stay compact and stay together.
"Against Bolton, they showed fantastic character. We did not play so well, but they stuck together."
While Chelsea stopped the rot on Wednesday night, and moved back above Tottenham into the top four, Villa curled up their toes at Manchester City to leave them just one point above the drop zone with the worst goal difference in the division.
But Ancelotti warned: "Villa are in a bad moment of their own, and for this reason we have to pay attention because every game is an opportunity to move on. We must be careful.
"I know Houllier - sometimes you are in trouble, but this is the life of the coach. You cannot lose confidence in your ability. He has experience and he can move on."
Despite the goals drying up - Chelsea plundered 21 in their first five games, while the last 11 matches have yielded just eight - Ancelotti insists he will look back on 2010 with nothing but fondness.
"I will remember 2010 as a fantastic year," he said. "We will have good memories, we did the best. Obviously to win the Premier League and FA Cup 'Double' for the first time in our history was fantastic.
"We didn't finish the year well - it was a relief to beat Bolton, but for six weeks it has been very difficult. We now hope the bad moments have finished and we have to look forward with confidence.
"I have had these difficult moments every year in my career - we have had a lot of problems and injuries and we have not been able to move on from them quickly. I am not sure we have moved on yet, but it was a good step, and a weight off our shoulders, to beat Bolton.
"We can still use young players on the bench when the time is right, but this week we had Sturridge, Zhirkov, Alex and Benayoun missing - all of them senior players - and we need them to come back quickly."

Carlo Ancelotti spared his Chelsea flops a trial by video because he did not want to damage their fragile morale.
Blues godfather Ancelotti took pity on the champions by ditching his customary post-match DVD analysis following Chelsea's 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, admitting: "When the moment is not good, you don't have to kill them."
The Italian was rewarded for his softly-softly approach with Chelsea's first three-point haul in the Premier League since November 10, a flimsy 1-0 win against Bolton.
If Florent Malouda's winner against the Trotters was a merciful release from the Blues' spluttering form, it was also vindication of Ancelotti's decision to ditch his video inquest after the Emirates horror show.
And as a supplementary confidence-booster, Chelsea could not wish for more submissive visitors to Stamford Bridge tomorrow than Aston Villa, who are in freefall after scrambling just seven points from a possible 24.
