Rooney may miss two weeks with ankle injury Updated Jan 1, 2011 1:51 PM ET Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could be out of action for two weeks after injuring his left ankle in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at West Bromwich Albion. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. Rooney scored in the third minute for his first goal from open play since March but hobbled off late in the match after he was hurt in a tackle by Chris Brunt. Rooney limped back onto the field for the final few minutes because United had used all its substitutes. United manager Alex Ferguson says "it looks as though he is out for a couple of weeks." Ferguson added that the England striker had been "absolutely magnificent and drove us the whole way." United leads the Premier League and hosts Stoke on Tuesday.

Rio: Winning is all that matters RivalsDM PRINT RSS 0 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 2:42 PM ET Rio Ferdinand believes the three points were all that mattered from Manchester United's 2-1 victory over West Brom and not the performance. Ferdinand conceded a penalty but saw his side go three points clear in the Premier League table - before Manchester City's game with Blackpool - thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Javier Fernandez. I don't care how we win. The three points is all that counts. "You've got to dig deep in these games and these are the type of games you can make up a lot of ground in the league." Ferdinand added: "Credit to West Brom, they played some good football. They are not scared to pass the ball around." Rooney opened the scoring when he headed in Patrice Evra's cross on three minutes but James Morrison equalised with a long-range shot. United survived when referee Chris Foy turned down obvious Baggies penalty claims after Gary Neville sent Graham Dorrans flying. West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie later fired a penalty wide after Ferdinand had fouled Jerome Thomas. Hernandez secured the points when he headed in after 75 minutes. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted his side had struggled against West Brom. "It was a really tough game on a greasy pitch," he told Sky Sports 2. "It's a massive result for us today. Over the years we've had to battle out games and we have had to do that today. "In the second half we started to play a bit better. We had to make changes with one or two injuries." Ferguson admitted he thought Neville had conceded a penalty, but only after he had seen the incident for a second time. He said: "I thought it was a penalty. I thought at the time Gary got it (the ball) but when I saw the replay he got the outside of the player's leg."

West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Manchester United RivalsDM PRINT RSS 0 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 10:31 AM ET Javier Hernandez climbed off the bench to earn Manchester United a 2-1 Premier League win over West Brom at The Hawthorns on New Year's Day. Hernandez once again became United's head-boy to seal a controversial victory. Yet it barely told the story of a controversial match, the majority of which the hosts will forever be convinced United should have played with 10 men. In addition, Wayne Rooney ended his nine-month wait for a goal in open play, James Morrison levelled with a brilliant volley and Peter Odemwingie missed a second-half penalty after Gary Neville had inexplicably escaped conceding one before the break. That United ended the game with Rooney limping badly following a tackle by Chris Brunt that initially led to him leaving the field, only added to the drama. At 35, Neville's career has lasted far longer than anyone had the right to expect when his ankle was broken in a tackle with Gary Speed at Old Trafford in 2007. The best right-back of his generation by a mile, Neville has shown admirable fortitude to bounce back from a succession of injuries since, most of them muscular. But the time is surely drawing near where Sir Alex Ferguson no longer feels he can rely on his one-time skipper and most committed of lifelong United fans. On his last Premier League start, at Stoke in October, he was substituted at half-time and was lucky to get that far as, by common consensus, he should have been sent off. Today, there was no doubt at all. As Graham Dorrans raced into the area, only Tomasz Kuszczak between him and the goal, Neville lunged in. No amount of TV replays could get his boot anywhere close to making contact with the ball. As Dorrans went down, the stadium waited for a penalty and red card. The one man who did not concur was the only one who had the power to make the decision, and from that moment Chris Foy struggled to convince anyone he was going to have a good day. It should have been the moment that completed a magnificent comeback for the hosts, who had fallen behind after just three minutes. More than most, Rooney had reason to be glad to see the back of 2010. It seems the New Year promises a new beginning for the 25-year-old. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. As Gabriel Obertan laid the ball back for Patrice Evra to swing a cross to the far post, Rooney intelligently waited, then stooped slightly and headed the ball back to the far corner. It was his first goal in open play since he scored an equally early goal in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich in March. On that occasion, United failed to capitalise and so it was again. The Red Devils were already on the back foot when Nemanja Vidic climbed above Peter Odemwingie, but got insufficient power in his header to get it past Morrison. As a former West Brom player, Kuszczak is used to the dimensions of the stadium. No amount of local knowledge could have helped him keep the 24-year-old's thunderbolt volley out. West Brom shrugged off the disappointment at Foy's mistake and continued to enjoy the best of things. Odemwingie was a repeated threat, as was Chris Brunt, who went close with decent opportunities either side of the interval. The penalty they should have had finally arrived seconds after a double United substitution that included an ineffective Dimitar Berbatov being replaced by Hernandez. Rio Ferdinand was adamant there had been no contact with Thomas as the tricky wide-man cut inside as he entered the box. Foy decided otherwise. But though Odemwingie strode forward with confidence, there was none behind the actual kick, which rolled wide to groans of disappointment from the home support. It was United's turn to be ranting at Foy as they claimed Thomas had deliberately stuck out an elbow to block Fabio's cross. The decision again appeared to be incorrect, although a couple of minutes later, no-one in red really cared as Rooney dropped a corner on to Hernandez's head inside the six-yard box. It was not quite all over for United, who had to survive a late pummelling, with Nemanja Vidic coming to their rescue with a magnificent clearance to deny Thomas, although the cost of victory could be high, depending on the extent on Rooney's injury.

Liverpool 2-1 Bolton RivalsDM PRINT RSS 2 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 12:48 PM ET Liverpool's Joe Cole earned manager Roy Hodgson some breathing space with a last-gasp winner as the Reds beat Bolton 2-1 at Anfield. With reports suggesting owners New England Sports Ventures are now actively seeking a replacement, the 63-year-old knows he is living on borrowed time after a woeful six months in charge. BARCLAY'S PREMIER LEAGUE Sat., Jan. 1 West Brom 1-2 Man Utd | Recap Liverpool 2-1 Bolton | Recap Man City 1-0 Blackpool | Recap Stoke City 2-0 Everton | Recap Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn | Recap Tottenham 1-0 Fulham | Recap West Ham 2-0 Wolves | Recap Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal | Recap Sun., Jan. 2 Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Wigan vs. Newcastle BPL Scores | Table | Fixtures When Kevin Davies headed in Matt Taylor's 43rd-minute free-kick things looked even worse for Hodgson, but a revitalised Fernando Torres volleyed home an equaliser before Cole tapped in his first league goal for the club he joined in the summer. The result came as a welcome relief to Hodgson after back-to-back Premier League defeats, but it may only give the Reds boss a temporary stay of execution. After their worst start since the 1953/54 season - when Liverpool were relegated - Hodgson appeared to have turned things around only for a defeat at Newcastle and the dreadful performance at home to Wolves three days ago to raise more questions about his future. Those became more valid when suggestions began to circulate that NESV were stepping up their search for what will be the club's most important appointment in decades. The feeling was the American owners were prepared to see out the season with Hodgson, who was brought in three months before their £300million takeover in October, but recent performances and major public relations gaffes have changed their stance. Hodgson's attempt to defend his criticism of fans who targeted their anger at him in midweek failed to cut any ice with supporters and, more importantly, seem to have had an adverse impact on owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner. It did not provide the ideal backdrop for Hodgson's most important match in his short reign and the situation was given extra spice because the man in the opposition dug-out, Owen Coyle, who has transformed Bolton in just 12 months, has been touted as a potential successor. Add to that the fact captain Steven Gerrard was only fit enough for a place on the bench after cramping up having played 90 minutes against Wolves in his first appearance after six weeks out, and the outlook appeared bleak for Hodgson even before kick-off. One solitary banner in the Kop read 'Fans' New Year Wish - New Manager', but if Hodgson was expecting his side to show an early reaction to their miserable midweek defeat it did not materialise. Hodgson was forced to send on Gerrard for Raul Meireles midway through the first half after the Portugal midfielder failed to run off an injury sustained minutes earlier. Just prior to that Taylor had hacked away Maxi Rodriguez's cross-shot from Torres' looped pass to the far post. Taylor proved to be even more effective at the other end as, after curling one low free-kick into the side-netting, it was his set-piece which allowed Kevin Davies to head home two minutes before the interval after Fabio Aurelio, making his first league start of the season, had fouled Rodrigo Moreno. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. Liverpool could have been ahead by then as Rodriguez headed Dirk Kuyt's deep cross onto the top of the crossbar, while in injury time Lucas Leiva skewed wide from close range. Torres may have given the impression of a man who did not know where his next goal was coming from, but in one flash of genius it all came flooding back. The second half was only four minutes old when Gerrard's first-time pass from David Ngog's knockdown picked out Torres on the penalty spot and he clinically volleyed home his first goal since November 10. Torres instantly looked a transformed player and his next effort from the left of the penalty area whistled past Jussi Jaaskelainen and wide of the far post, while Rodriguez and Gerrard both had close-range shots charged down. Gerrard breathed new life into his previously prolific partnership with Torres and another chipped pass into the penalty area saw the Spain international fire just wide. An error by Glen Johnson gifted the ball to substitute Ivan Klasnic late on but the England international was indebted to Reina for holding the fierce shot. Liverpool finished the game as they should have started it, pressing for victory, and they were rewarded with an injury-time winner. Gerrard's deep cross was touched back by Rodriguez and substitute Cole tapped in from a couple of yards for his first league goal for Liverpool. It may have eased the pressure on Hodgson, but even a vastly-improved second half performance may not be enough to convince the owners the club is heading in the right direction.

Obinna: Slow start has Hammered us Published 23:00 15/12/10 By Neil McLeman * * West-Ham-Victor-Obinna-Sunderland-Phil-Bardsley cropped Victor Obinna has admitted West Ham have not recovered from losing their first four league games of the season. The Irons are set to spend Christmas in dreaded last place after winning only two matches out of 17. And in a meeting on Sunday after the Manchester City defeat, the Upton Park board made clear to manager Avram Grant that results had to improve quickly. The Hammers have lost only five of their last 12 matches - the same as Arsenal and only one more than Chelsea. But Grant’s side have drawn too many matches, including sharing the points at home to newly-promoted West Brom and Blackpool. Yet loan signing Obinna reckons the damage was done back in the summer when West Ham were caught cold and conceded 12 goals in their first four games. And they have not got out of the bottom three since. “We didn’t start very well,” said the Nigerian. “Losing the first four games wasn’t very good for the team. It has really affected the team. Gradually we have been trying to pick up the rhythm. It has not been easy. “The Premier League is one of the toughest leagues in the world. Obviously it is the fastest in terms of physique. You have to be prepared 100 per cent.” Grant’s position at the club is under more strain with the sudden availability of two possible replacements. Stratford-born Chris Hughton played for the Hammers between 1990-92 and his father still lives near the Boleyn Ground, while Sam Allardyce, sacked by Blackburn this week, is a more experienced alternative. West Ham go to Ewood Park on Saturday at the start of a run of four matches against teams in the bottom half of the Premier League which will decide Grant’s future. The Hammers also travel to Fulham on Boxing Day before hosting Everton and Wolverhampton. Grant needs at least two wins from the four games to convince the board to allow him to spend in the January transfer window. The Israeli manager is desperate to keep hold of midfielder Scott Parker but Carlton Cole could be sold to raise further transfer funds. The alternative is the loan market with Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara, who was outstanding at Portsmouth under Grant last season, a possible target now the 24-year-old has recovered from a back injury. Obinna revealed he sought advice from Pompey legend Kanu before moving to Upton Park on a year’s loan this season with the option to buy next summer. “I have been having a wonderful time since I have been here,” said the winner of November Player of the Month award after his first Premier League goal against Wigan. “Basically, it doesn’t depend on me. I come from Inter Milan and Inter Milan has a say in everything concerning me staying in a West Ham shirt.”

Manchester City 1-0 Blackpool RivalsDM PRINT RSS 0 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 12:35 PM ET Three stunning misses from Carlos Tevez almost proved costly as Manchester City narrowly edged out Blackpool 1-0 on New Year's Day. Tevez missed a first-half penalty and then two sitters in the space of five minutes after the break, including an open goal as he fell after rounding the goalkeeper. BARCLAY'S PREMIER LEAGUE Sat., Jan. 1 West Brom 1-2 Man Utd | Recap Liverpool 2-1 Bolton | Recap Man City 1-0 Blackpool | Recap Stoke City 2-0 Everton | Recap Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn | Recap Tottenham 1-0 Fulham | Recap West Ham 2-0 Wolves | Recap Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal | Recap Sun., Jan. 2 Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Wigan vs. Newcastle BPL Scores | Table | Fixtures But all that came after Adam Johnson's 33rd-minute strike and City endured a nervous finish to take all three points which ensured they stay level with neighbours United at the top of the Premier League. Tevez returned to lead the City attack as a knee injury ruled out Mario Balotelli only four days after his hat-trick against Aston Villa, one of four changes manager Roberto Mancini made to the side that won 4-0. Ian Holloway made only one change to the Blackpool team that won 2-0 at Sunderland, with captain Charlie Adam returning from suspension in place of Elliot Grandin, who suffered a hamstring injury at the Stadium of Light. Tevez should have scored after only 22 seconds as the match got off to a tremendous start. Adam misplaced a backpass that went straight to the Argentinian, but he screwed his shot wide. David Silva fired wide moments later, while Blackpool had a fantastic chance when Gary Taylor-Fletcher beat Aleksandar Kolarov to break into the box, only to pull his cross back behind the run of DJ Campbell. Tevez was almost played in again by another sloppy Blackpool pass, but this time he was forced wide and his cross was headed away from Yaya Toure by Ian Evatt. But Blackpool, playing their fourth straight away game, were also playing with plenty of intent and Ludovic Sylvestre's neat pass left Taylor-Fletcher free in front of goal, with Joe Hart making a fine save to deny him. Silva was inches away from capping a fine move with the opening goal in the 20th minute, but his shot scraped the wrong side of the post from Tevez's cross. Silva went just wide again when he hooked Craig Cathcart's header out of the air on the edge of the area before sending a half-volley just the wrong side of the post. City had been failing to test Richard Kingson and Tevez was off target again when he blazed over after being played in by Toure. But the breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when Taylor-Fletcher cleared a corner straight to Johnson, who sent a low shot through the crowd and past the unsighted goalkeeper. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. Tevez then wasted the chance to make it 2-0 three minutes later as he sent a penalty wide left after Toure was clumsily brought down by Luke Varney. Holloway replaced Sylvestre with Matt Phillips at the break and the winger made a lively start, with Varney heading just over from his cross. Phillips then tested Hart, breaking from the halfway line before sending a shot through the legs of Vincent Kompany which the England goalkeeper pushed away from danger. Toure was denied a brilliant solo goal as he raced from deep inside his own area, beating four defenders, before being denied by a fine challenge from Cathcart as he prepared to shoot. Pablo Zabaleta came on for his 100th City appearance and immediately teed up Tevez to curl a shot just wide of the right-hand post. City then suffered a blow as Silva came off with a knee injury, replaced by James Milner. Joleon Lescott almost played a suicidal backpass with Hart just winning the race against Campbell to clear. Tevez then missed an unbelievable chance to score, racing clear and rounding the goalkeeper, only to slip in front of the open goal and allow Blackpool to recover. It was clearly not Tevez's day and he missed another great chance when he directed Milner's pull-back wide from the penalty spot after breaking free of his marker. That kept the pressure on City and Hart needed fingertips to push Neal Eardley's rising drive over the crossbar. From the resulting corner, substitute Brett Ormerod saw his header touched over by the England goalkeeper. Blackpool kept up the heat in the final minutes, but City, using some often desperate defending, hung on.

Stoke City 2-0 Everton RivalsDM PRINT RSS 0 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 12:32 PM ET A Kenwyne Jones header and a freak Phil Jagielka own goal handed Stoke a 2-0 victory in a full-blooded Premier League clash at home to Everton. Jones rose to power the ball past Tim Howard midway through the first half before Jagielka put through his own net for the second time in successive appearances with 21 minutes remaining at the Britannia Stadium on New Year's Day. BARCLAY'S PREMIER LEAGUE Sat., Jan. 1 West Brom 1-2 Man Utd | Recap Liverpool 2-1 Bolton | Recap Man City 1-0 Blackpool | Recap Stoke City 2-0 Everton | Recap Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn | Recap Tottenham 1-0 Fulham | Recap West Ham 2-0 Wolves | Recap Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal | Recap Sun., Jan. 2 Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Wigan vs. Newcastle BPL Scores | Table | Fixtures Everton enjoyed large spells of dominance as they looked to kickstart their stuttering season but spurned a number of good opportunities. Talisman Tim Cahill, making his final appearance before departing for Asia Cup duty with Australia, went the closest when he headed wide soon after Jones' opener. Stoke, after successive home defeats, were at their most determined and were well rewarded for a typically physical and direct display. Everton boss David Moyes had been hoping Jagielka, who also scored an own goal against Manchester City, could shake off a thigh injury to play. The England defender proved his fitness to replace Tony Hibbert - who also scored an own goal in the Toffees last game against West Ham - while Louis Saha was restored in attack. That meant Cahill was no longer deployed as a lone striker but did play most of the game up front. Saha, without a league goal in 11 months, looked determined to make the most of his recall and burst into the area inside the first minute. He went down as Ryan Shawcross appeared to kick him in the midriff but referee Andre Marriner saw nothing untoward. Saha sparked the next decent Everton attack with a smart turn and pass for winger Seamus Coleman but Stoke dealt with the Irishman's cross. Cahill led another Everton charge and fed Steven Pienaar inside the box but Asmir Begovic easily claimed the South African's shot. Stoke should have taken the lead after 10 minutes when Jones headed a long Begovic punt through to striker partner Ricardo Fuller. The Jamaica striker headed forwards himself to beat Sylvain Distin and open up the defence but then dragged his low shot wide. The opener came after 23 minutes as Jones diverted another long ball into the path of Matthew Etherington and raced into the area. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. Etherington skipped around Phil Neville on the left and picked out Jones with a perfect cross which the former Sunderland forward powered into the net. Everton went close to an immediate reply but Saha snatched at a difficult chance. The visitors had a better opportunity moments later when Leighton Baines found space to cross for the unmarked Cahill but the normally lethal Australian, despite a tight angle, surprisingly headed across goal. Marriner had a difficult decision to make when Begovic rushed out of goal and brought down Saha just outside his area but a yellow card was the verdict. Mikel Arteta fired the resulting free-kick straight into the wall and Baines also had a shot blocked soon after. Saha and Pienaar combined to create another opening but the latter's shot was deflected over by Higginbotham. Everton applied more pressure at the start of the second half but Pienaar shot well wide when he mishit a volley. Stoke continued to pose a threat and Jones released Etherington down the right but Everton got back in numbers. Moyes attempted to freshen up his side just after the hour by removing Arteta and Neville and sending on Victor Anichebe and Leon Osman. Jermaine Beckford was on for Saha soon after. But within moments the Toffees' task had doubled after Jagielka's stroke of misfortune. Everton were caught as Higginbotham sent a long free-kick into the box which Jones flicked straight up in the air. Jagielka tried to get in the way as the ball dropped towards Fuller six yards out but got his feet tangled and it bounced off his leg and past Howard. Everton could have replied within a minute after Cahill was brought down by Shawcross but Baines curled his free-kick narrowly wide. But Stoke finished the stronger and the visitors were given a let-off when Fuller looked to latch onto another long ball but stumbled on the edge of the area. Dean Whitehead then volleyed over from a corner as Everton again narrowly avoided conceding a third.

Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn Rovers RivalsDM PRINT RSS 0 comments » Updated Jan 1, 2011 12:45 PM ET Darren Bent ended his personal goal drought as Sunderland bounced back from their horror show against Blackpool to defeat Blackburn 3-0. The England striker glanced home a header eight minutes after Danny Welbeck's deflected 11th-minute shot had put the Black Cats in front to claim his 10th goal of the season and his first in six games. BARCLAY'S PREMIER LEAGUE Sat., Jan. 1 West Brom 1-2 Man Utd | Recap Liverpool 2-1 Bolton | Recap Man City 1-0 Blackpool | Recap Stoke City 2-0 Everton | Recap Sunderland 3-0 Blackburn | Recap Tottenham 1-0 Fulham | Recap West Ham 2-0 Wolves | Recap Birmingham 0-3 Arsenal | Recap Sun., Jan. 2 Chelsea vs. Aston Villa Wigan vs. Newcastle BPL Scores | Table | Fixtures Bent could easily have grabbed a second-half hat-trick and was guilty of a glaring 62nd-minute miss from just three yards, although former Sunderland striker El-Hadji Diouf had earlier contrived to fire over from even closer. But substitute Asamoah Gyan sealed a victory which took Sunderland to 30 points for the season with a third at the death to provide the perfect antidote to their wastefulness against the Seasiders in front of a crowd of 36,242. For manager Steve Bruce, there was also a taste of vicarious revenge on behalf of close friend Sam Allardyce following his unceremonious dismissal by Rovers. It had been a difficult week for Bruce, who was without seven players for the Boxing Day trip to Manchester United, and then saw his side create a hatful of chances against Blackpool and fail to take any of them as they slipped to a 2-0 home defeat, their first of their league campaign and just the second in 2010. Add to that his dismay at turning 50 yesterday, and the former United defender could have been forgiven for wishing to see the back of an eventful seven days. In the circumstances, his players could hardly have responded anymore positively as they took the game by the scruff of the neck from the off and threatened to have it won by the break. Welbeck, Bent and record signing Gyan uncharacteristically fired blanks on Tuesday, but they made amends in fine style. Injuries to Nedum Onuoha, Lee Cattermole and Gyan meant Bruce had little option to reshuffle his side, and his decision to restore Kieran Richardson at left-back and move Phil Bardsley to the right to allow Ahmed Elmohamady to resume his preferred midfield role proved a masterstroke. The Egypt international made life intensely difficult for full-back Martin Olsson, and it was his ability to deliver the ball into the danger area which was responsible for both first-half goals. Rovers skipper Ryan Nelsen got his head to Elmohamady's 11th-minute cross and then attempted to block Welbeck's shot after he had controlled on his chest and volleyed towards goal. However, the New Zealand international only succeeded in deflecting the ball past wrong-footed keeper Mark Bunn to hand Sunderland an early lead. Blackburn's plight became increasingly desperate within eight minutes when Bent got in front of defender Grant Hanley to head Elmohamady's cross into the bottom corner. 2010 Soccer Year in Pictures WHAT A YEAR! Take a pictorial look back at an incredible year in soccer with the 2010 Year in Pictures gallery. But for all their dominance, the home side should have been pegged back 11 minutes before the break when former Sunderland striker El-Hadji Diouf was guilty of a glaring miss. Bruce's men were aggrieved to concede a free-kick as David Dunn ducked into David Meyler's challenge, and their mood might have darkened from the resulting set-piece. Morten Gamst Pedersen curled an inviting free-kick to the far post, where Diouf met it unopposed but somehow contrived to smash it over the bar from barely two yards. Welbeck clipped the top of the crossbar with a delicate 37th-minute chip with the Black Cats looking to kill the game off, but keeper Craig Gordon was relieved to see Dunn's 44th-minute effort from distance fly just wide after he had cut inside onto his left foot. Rovers boss Steve Kean withdrew Hanley at the break and replaced him with striker Benjani Mwaruwari as Brett Emerton moved back into defence with his team having abandoned the 4-5-1 formation with which they had started the game. That gave them a more adventurous look and they might have capitalised nine minutes after the restart when El-Hadji Diouf did well to get in a cross from the right and Mame Biram Diouf headed it just wide. Dunn went close seconds later with a dipping volley as the Black Cats came under sustained pressure for the first time in the game, but the game should have been over with 62 minutes gone. Steed Malbranque and Richardson carved Rovers open down the left and when the full-back crossed for the unmarked Bent in the middle, only to see him miss the target from just three yards. Bent passed up another glorious opportunity two minutes later when he shot wide after Gael Givet had failed to cut out a Malbranque cross, and drilled a 75th-minute left-foot effort wide, while Jordan Henderson hit the bar three minutes later. But Gyan made sure a minute from time to wrap up a regulation victory with a fine individual goal.
