The Dutch midfielder arrived at Eastlands from Hamburg in January 2009, since when he has established himself as one of the most combative players in the Premier League.
Although his physical style has attracted unwanted attention at times, his tackle on Hatem Ben Arfa during the home win over Newcastle earlier this season drew criticism that followed his X-rated World Cup final challenge on Xabi Alonso, it has not obscured the quality and dynamism that has helped push City towards a Champions League berth.
But, although he may be coveted across Europe, De Jong is happy where he is.
"I can't ever see myself leaving this club," the 26-year-old told the official Manchester City magazine, Manc.
"City have done so much for me as a player and a person over the last two years. Now the plan is to be successful for a long time to come."
De Jong's unselfish approach has allowed more flamboyant members of the City side to strut their stuff further up the field.
Indeed, it has been suggested manager Roberto Mancini does not require a tight three-man midfield due to De Jong's presence.
However, he is keen to start getting forward more often, and maybe even break his goalscoring duck, which now extends to 84 games after he hit the post in Saturday's surprise defeat at Aston Villa.
"I am getting closer but to score a goal for City will be brilliant," he said.
"I haven't got a celebration planned, even though I've had plenty of time to think about it."

Ruud van Nistelrooy is refusing to sign a contract extension with Hamburg after they blocked his return to Real Madrid.

The 34-year-old striker was identified by Jose Mourinho as someone they could draft in on a short-term basis to cover for the injured Gonzalo Higuain.
Higuain is out for four months following surgery on his back, leaving Real short of attacking options.
Van Nistelrooy had been keen on a return to Madrid where he plundered an astonishing 46 goals in 68 games during an earlier three-and-a-half-year tenure.
But the Bundesliga club have blocked the move and want the veteran striker to help fire them up the table from their current sixth position.
"A contract extension with Hamburg can now be ruled out," his agent Rodger Linse told the Hamburger Morgenpost.
"He cannot understand it (why Hamburg did not let him go) and he has got a problem with it. It is very, very painful.
"It is sad because Hamburg have no idea what they are doing to Ruud with this decision."
Van Nistelrooy has scored six goals this season for Hamburg.

Substitute Julian Draxler scored a stunning winner in the last minute of extra time to send Schalke into the semifinals of the German Cup with a 3-2 home win over Nuremberg on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old Draxler - Schalke's youngest ever Bundesliga player - had been on the pitch for only three minutes when he collected the ball from Jefferson Farfan, eluded Andreas Wolf on the edge of the penalty area, and let fly from 22 meters (yards) to send the home fans wild.

Julian Schieber scored twice for Nuremberg - the first after three minutes when he reacted quickly to blast past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from short range.
Schalke equalized 10 minutes later through Mario Gavranovic after he rounded off a fast breakaway instigated by Raul Gonzalez. The Spaniard played a through ball into the path of Christian Pander, who cut it back for Gavranovic to shoot first time past Raphael Schaefer.
Raul had the ball in the net 10 minutes later but the effort was ruled out for a push on Philipp Wollscheid, and the 33-year-old hit the outside of the post a minute after that.
Schieber's second came in the 33rd, when he met a Christian Eigler cross from the left to leave Neuer shaking his head.
Schaefer reacted superbly to prevent Schalke equalizing early in the second half when the ball took a major deflection off Wollscheid. The goalkeeper was grateful to gather the ball at the second attempt after diving to his right.
There was little he could do when Ivan Rakitic scored in the 58th, however. The Croat let fly from the edge of the area after he was set up by a classy back-heel from Raul.
Schalke continued to apply the pressure, but the home side was unable to score a winner in regular time.
Extra time also proved frustrating for the hosts - until coach Felix Magath introduced Draxler to the game in the 116th minute.
"I wanted to bring him on and I'm happy I did that just before the end," Magath said.
The goal was Draxler's first for the senior side.
"You dream about such an experience your whole life," he said. "The coach told me we had to do something."

Chipukizi 30 kuunda timu ya vijana Tuesday, 25 January 2011 20:53

Calvin Kiwia

Fabregas hits back in diving row

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has dismissed claims from Wigan manager Roberto Martinez that he "knows how to buy decisions off referees" by insisting: "I am not the kind of guy that dives."
Martinez was left less than impressed by the award of what he labelled a "soft" penalty during his side's 3-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday after Latics skipper Gary Caldwell had been sent off for pulling back Fabregas.
Although Robin van Persie put the resulting spot-kick over the bar, Martinez maintained Fabregas had been "very clever", adding: "Cesc comes from a different culture - you do not cheat, if you take a decision from the referee it is because you are clever and you are getting something for your team."
Fabregas moved to put the record straight when writing in his programme notes for tonight's Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Ipswich.

Netherlands midfielder Mark van Bommel is leaving Bayern Munich for AC Milan - a move that gives him the chance of winning a league title in a fourth country.
The Serie A leaders said Tuesday that the 33-year-old Van Bommel has signed a contract through June 30.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

"Van Bommel is an important player with international (experience)," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "Milan took the best player available in that position."
Van Bommel could make his Milan debut Wednesday in the Italian Cup quarterfinals against Sampdoria along with another newly signed Dutch international, Urby Emanuelson.
"We have two new acquisitions who could play - one certainly," Allegri added. "We don't have any time and we haven't tried anything out but they're very experienced and skilled players and I think they can play just as well."
Van Bommel's contract with Bayern had been due to expire at the end of the season. Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said the German champions granted his wish to be released early from his contract because of his services to the club.
The Dutchman joined Bayern from Barcelona in August 2006 and had been the club's captain since the 2008-09 season. Before moving to Spain, he played for PSV Eindhoven.
He played 185 games for Bayern and scored 16 goals.
"Mark was always an exemplary professional, an important and successful player for Bayern and, beyond that, a great captain," Rummenigge said on Bayern's website.
Van Bommel said he was leaving Bayern "with a heavy heart, but with my head held high."
"I spent 4 1/2 very good and successful years here," he added.
Speculation that Van Bommel might move during the winter transfer window had flared again this week, having previously died down after his agent said last month that he would play out his contract.
Bayern, which had a disappointing first half of the season, brought in Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo from Hoffenheim over the winter break.
It wasn't immediately clear who will replace Van Bommel as captain.

Schaaf has backing of Bremen

Werder Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs has backed Thomas Schaaf to turn around the club's fortunes following their 3-0 defeat to Cologne.

Schaaf has been at the helm of the northern Germany side for 12 years, but never have they been in such a difficult situation.
With just 22 points from 19 games, Bremen are just three points clear of the relegation zone while qualifying for Europe next season seems unlikely with an 11-point deficit on fifth-placed Mainz.
Therefore, the team was summoned for a crisis meeting on Monday following the weekend defeat.
However, according to Allofs, it is they who are under pressure and not Schaaf.
"Sometimes bad coaches have good results, but here it is the other way around," he said. "There is no ultimatum for the coach.
"He has our total backing. We are absolutely convinced in him.
"The problem is not the coach, it is the team. They have got to understand that they need to fight.
"We are not mature enough to play good football anyway now."
Not only is Allofs convinced with Schaaf's work, he also feels it would not make any difference firing him and hiring somebody else, even if it could give them a short-term boost.
He said: "We are not going to sack a coach to maybe get one or two weeks of a psychological difference.
"Other clubs have made this mistake, but we won't."
Schaaf has remained silent since the weekend's defeat, but he has raised his voice regularly in training.
"I can feel that he is totally motivated," added Allofs.

'Hungry' Fab will lead Arsenal to new era of success, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger last night backed Cesc Fabregas to lead Arsenal to a new era of success.
Fabregas grabbed the clincher as Arsenal reached Wembley and stayed on course for their first trophy since the FA Cup in 2005.
Arsenal 3-0 Ipswich: Fabregas fires Gunners to Wembley
Arsenal boss Wenger believes the Carling Cup will be just the start and Fabregas's celebration proves how much it means to him.
Wenger said: "You could see from Cesc that he is hungry. He wants to win things and this has a lot of meaning for him.
"I get the same question every time, so I say 'we try to win everything we can', but on the other hand it can more get the pressure of the team to deliver in the other competitions.
"It is not the only target we have of the season, we have even bigger targets but it can help us to achieve the other targets.
"It means a lot for the club, they deserve it because they have an outstanding attitude. This team is hungry for success - you could see we kept going and we refused to show weakness. An average team might not have qualified."
Wenger also admitted that he is struggling to sign a new defender before the end of the January transfer window.
"I'd be surprised if we did any business in this window," said Wenger.
Ipswich boss Paul Jewell paid tribute to his players and said: "We weren't disgraced over two games. We knew we would be under the cosh - but it's going to be like that with a team like us coming to Arsenal. We will learn from this."

Chelsea yaichapa Bolton 4-0 Tuesday, 25 January 2011 20:52

BOLTON, England

Chelsea fail in £52m bid for Atletico's Aguero & Godin

Aguero has scored seven league goals this season

Chelsea have had a £52m bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and defender Diego Godin rejected.
Atletico have also recently rejected a £39m bid for Aguero from Real Madrid.
"Atletico have said no to the two offers because they believe in these two players," said majority shareholder Miguel Angel Gil.
Argentina international Aguero, 22, has scored seven league goals this season, while Uruguay international Godin, 24, has won 43 caps.
"We never comment on transfer speculation, no matter how wild it is," said a Chelsea spokesman.
Aguero, whose father-in-law is Argentina legend Diego Maradona, joined the Spanish side from Independiente for a club record fee of £20m in 2006, while Godin joined the Madrid club from Villarreal in August 2010.
As well as failing in their joint bid for Aguero and Godin, Chelsea are thought to have been unsuccessful with a £17m bid for Benfica defender David Luiz in December.
However Chelsea remain hopeful of securing a deal for the 23-year-old Brazil international.
Meanwhile, Atletico have responded to speculation about the future of their coach Quique Sanchez Flores following a run of bad results.
The Europa League holders have been knocked out of this season's competition as well as the Spanish Cup, while on Sunday they lost 1-0 at struggling Sporting Gijon on Sunday to slip 10 points off the Champions League qualification slots.
But Gil told the Atletico website: "Sanchez Flores will be coach until the end of the season.
"At the end of the campaign we will talk."

Arsenal scored twice in three second-half minutes at the Emirates to break the resistance of stubborn Ipswich and claim their place in the Carling Cup final.
A precise right-footed finish from Nicklas Bendtner and a header from Laurent Koscielny put the Gunners ahead in the tie after Ipswich had won the first leg 1-0 at Portman Road.
Cesc Fabregas then sealed victory for Arsenal, who will now play either Birmingham or West Ham in the final at Wembley on 27 February as they attempt to win their first silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.
Huge credit must go to Championship strugglers Ipswich, who were well organised and kept their Premier League opponents at bay for 151 minutes in the tie, including more than an hour at the Emirates.

Gunners duo heap praise on Ipswich

Robin van Persie hit the woodwork in the opening half and Arsenal became increasingly frustrated by their failure to score - with one extremely ambitious long-range attempt from Gael Clichy epitomising his team's desperation.
But the mood changed completely after Arsenal's quick-fire double and Ipswich, supported by 9,000 away supporters, could not force their way back into the tie.
Ipswich were relatively comfortable for the opening 15 minutes, although Van Persie might have done better after making a clean connection from a Bacary Sagna cross.
The home team eventually started to unpick the Town defence and Fabregas forced a saved from visiting goalkeeper Marton Fulop after collecting a pass from Bendtner, who played on the right side of the front line.

Fabregas finally broke through in the second half

Van Persie scored a hat-trick against Wigan on Saturday and should have found the net again after Bendtner found him at the far post but the Dutchman's header rebounded to safety off the crossbar.
Jack Wilshere then played in Fabregas with a sublime chipped pass, which the Spaniard deftly controlled before shooting beyond Fulop but wide of the away team's goal.
Arsenal were starting to work up a head of steam and Tractor Boys boss Paul Jewell cut an increasingly frustrated figure on the touchline.
As had been the case in the first leg, Ipswich lined up with five across midfield, featuring Mark Kennedy in a deep role protecting the back four. They struggled to hold on to the ball and seemed to be surrendering territory as the match progressed but they maintained their shape and discipline.
And for all the Gunners' passing and probing around the opposition penalty area, the north Londoners ended the opening half with nothing to show for their efforts, while there was an increasing sense of anxiety inside the stadium.

Will Arsenal end their barren run without a trophy?
You could feel the relief after Bendtner collected Wilshere's raking pass before cutting inside Carlos Edwards and burying his shot beyond Fulop.
Koscielny then converted a corner from the largely anonymous Andrey Arshavin at the near post to put the Gunners ahead in the tie.
Jewell replaced first-leg hero Tamas Priskin with Jason Scotland, who did at least force a save from the home side's keeper Wojciech Szczesny with a shot from a tight angle.
But Fabregas sealed Arsenal's first appearance in a major final since the 2007 Carling Cup final when he collected a return pass from Arshavin before guiding the ball beyond Fulop.

Berbatov (right) and Hernandez took advantage of a tiring Blackpool

Manchester United staged a stunning late comeback to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with victory at Blackpool.
United's attempt to extend their unbeaten league sequence to 23 games this season looked to be in shreds as the Seasiders - managed by Ian Holloway - roared into a fully deserved two-goal lead at the interval.
Blackpool still held the advantage given to them by two headed goals, from former United youngster Craig Cathcart and DJ Campbell, with only 18 minutes left - but they were then hit by a torrent of attacks that brought United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's visitors an unlikely triumph.
And Ferguson himself was able to take much of the credit for the turnaround following his decision to remove a subdued Wayne Rooney after 66 minutes and replace the England man with Javier Hernandez, who went on to play a crucial role in United's fightback.

Terrific fightback pleases Phelan

Dimitar Berbatov found the first cracks in the home side's resilience when he pulled one back from close range and Hernandez himself drew the visitors level with a composed finish three minutes later as Bloomfield Road's earlier jubilation turned to despair.
And after a lengthy delay caused by an injury to Rafael da Silva - which resulted in 10 minutes of stoppage time - Berbatov maintained his golden run of form by punishing more gaps in Blackpool's rearguard to fire home the winner with his 19th league goal of the campaign.
It was a bitter pill for Holloway and his players, who performed magnificently in the first half to take full toll on a shoddy United display, to swallow as they slumped on the turf at the final whistle.
At the heart of that dramatic opening period was in-demand midfield man Charlie Adam, who continues to be pursued by Liverpool and has informed Blackpool of his desire to leave.
Adam dictated the game in an enthralling opening half, showing his full range of passes and providing both of the corners from which the Seasiders scored.
He gave a display that fully justified Holloway's insistence that he is worth more than the £4m currently on offer from Liverpool.
Blackpool may feel the game turned on the moment early in the second half when referee Peter Walton rejected penalty claims as Rafael appeared to bundle Luke Varney to the ground in the area.
From then on the visitors, inspired by the composure provided by Ryan Giggs after he came on for Darron Gibson at half-time, managed to unscramble their senses to slowly but surely overpower gallant Blackpool.
In another demonstration of the resilience and never-say-die spirit that is built into this United side, they hunted Blackpool down once they had the whiff of victory and there was almost an inevitability about the final outcome once they found a foothold in the game.

What a game. Giggs, Berba & Hernandez - MASTERCLASS

TheFamousManUnited

The only cloud on their night was that injury to Rafael, who was followed off the pitch by his anxious brother Fabio as he was stretchered away down the tunnel.
Holloway had no hesitation in including Adam in his starting line-up - and the Blackpool boss was rewarded as the Scot emerged as the stand-out performer in a memorable first half.
Recovering from an early arm injury that required treatment, Adam was heavily involved and left United defender Patrice Evra with a facial injury following a clash near the touchline that infuriated Ferguson, who remonstrated with referee Walton.
Evra was only just recovering his position after a spell of treatment when the home side took the lead in the 15th minute, Cathcart losing his marker Berbatov to power a header past goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
Blackpool's fearless and positive approach had United rattled, an uncertainly that was underlined when Van der Sar had to react swiftly to prevent Nemanja Vidic turning Adam's dangerous cross into his own net.
Seconds later Elliot Grandin blazed over the top from 10 yards when a second goal looked certain.
Ferguson attempted to inject some urgency into United by moving Rooney inside from his left-flank position in support of Berbatov - but still it was Blackpool who were in control and they deservedly doubled their lead two minutes before the interval.
Van der Sar did superbly to turn David Vaughan's shot away for a corner, but there was to be no reprieve for United. Adam's corner glanced off Gibson and Campbell was alert at the far post to send Bloomfield Road into ecstasy.

Holloway 'gutted' after Man Utd defeat

Ferguson, who presumably showed no mercy to his shambolic side at half-time, sent on Giggs for Gibson and United immediately showed a greater sense of urgency.
It was the Seasiders, however, who were swiftly on the attack again and they had very presentable claims for a penalty waved away as Varney tumbled under a challenge from Rafael.
Blackpool keeper Richard Kingson was finally tested by efforts from Nani and Paul Scholes but United's lack of sustained threat prompted Ferguson to remove Rooney and send on Hernandez.
The results were spectacular as Ferguson's men launched a stunning revival with two goals in the space of three minutes. Berbatov was the first to strike with 18 minutes left as he turned in Darren Fletcher's cross before Hernandez raced on to Giggs's pass and steered his finish past Kingson.
United had the momentum, but it was halted when defender Rafael fell awkwardly and required lengthy treatment behind the goal before being stretchered away.
After a delay that resulted in such a lengthy spell of stoppage time, United soon picked up the pace again and with three minutes of normal time Berbatov took control inside the Blackpool area to bury his finish emphatically beyond Kingson after running on to Scholes's pass.
Blackpool had nothing left to give, despite that lengthy period of injury time, and United had once again produced the sort of fightback that has become their trademark under Ferguson.
