Carragher hails Dalglish effect

Updated Feb 7, 2011 10:36 AM ET
Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher has hailed the galvanising effect Kenny Dalglish has had on the squad since taking over a month ago.
Sunday's win at Chelsea was the Reds' fourth in succession in a five-match unbeaten run which has lifted them to sixth, their highest Premier League position of the season.

There has been a noticeable change on the pitch since the 59-year-old took over from Roy Hodgson with performances, as well as results, on an upward curve.
And Carragher believes that is mainly due to Dalglish, in his second spell as Liverpool manager, as he has brought stability and a feeling harmony to all aspects of the operation at Anfield - especially among fans who turned against Hodgson very quickly.
"What Kenny's done has got the club all as one; supporters are behind everything and it helps that the players and supporters are that together," said the defender.
"It wasn't like that at the start of the season unfortunately for Roy Hodgson, but Kenny coming in has galvanised the supporters who are behind the team again.
"His record as a manager is fantastic, one of the top managers around, he's won four championships
"But it's hard to put your finger on and say this manager is doing something different or that it's better.
"That's disrespectful but it's going well at the moment and so we'll enjoy that."

The winning run has helped ensure there has been no adverse fallout from the £50million departure of Fernando Torres to yesterday's opponents.
New arrival Luis Suarez watched from the bench at Stamford Bridge while club record signing Andy Carroll has yet to feature because of injury.
But Carragher insisted those two players meant the squad could look to the future and not mourn the loss of the Spain striker.
"Time will tell if we've come out of transfer window stronger and how we'll be talking about who got the better end of the deal," the 33-year-old told the Liverpool Echo.
"For us, if Torres does well at Chelsea, good luck to him, as long as he doesn't play well against us.
"We've got to focus on what Carroll and Suarez can do for us, I'm sure they can be great signings.
"At Liverpool most games you're expected to win, so can't get too carried away as the standards here are so high."
Midfielder Raul Meireles was the match-winner with his fourth goal in five matches.
However, the Portugal international is a reluctant hero and was keen to stress the significance of the team performance.
"It's a good moment for me but the most important thing is the team and the victory. Three points is important for us," he said.
"We tried to do our best and play good football. Now I've scored a few goals for the club and I'm happy."

Carlos Tevez has emphasised his commitment to Manchester City by saying: "I don't think anyone loves the shirt more than me."
The Argentina striker heads into the derby with his former club Manchester United on Saturday, aiming to improve on his impressive 20-goal tally for the season.

Tevez scored a first-half hat-trick in the 3-0 victory against West Brom on Saturday on his 27th birthday.
The skipper claims he is now content after a spell where he seemed to anxious to leave Eastlands, handing in a transfer request which was later withdrawn.
"I never walked out of the club or wanted to do any harm to the club, not for anything in the world, " he told the club website.
"I do not think there is anyone who loves the shirt more than me. I show that in every game I play. I give everything I have got.
"I do not speak very often to the press. I just have it in my head, I do my talking out there on the field, which is the most important thing.
"People might want to have a pop at me but I am completely at ease here. I want to do my best for the City shirt."

N'Zogbia's a happy Latic

Updated Feb 7, 2011 9:05 AM ET
Charles N'Zogbia insists he was happy to stay at Wigan and is fully focused on helping the Latics survive in the Premier League.
The highly-rated winger was linked with Birmingham and a return to Newcastle during the transfer window, but N'Zogbia feels he still has big role to play for Wigan as they battle relegation.

And the 24-year-old hopes he can catch the eye of France boss Laurent Blanc if he performs well in the remaining games.
When asked about transfer speculation, he told L'Equipe: "To me it is over.
"I don't want to hear anymore about the January transfer market. I told people who called me that I would not move.
"I just want to do everything to help Wigan survive and find again Les Bleus as soon as possible."

No goals were scored in the Bundesliga Sunday when Freiburg drew 0-0 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and the derby between Hamburger SV and St. Pauli was called off.
Freiburg's Papiss Demba Cisse and Frankfurt's Fanis Gekas, the league's second and third-highest goalscorers respectively, both missed chances to add to their goal tally this season.

Freiburg remains sixth, 17 points behind leader Borussia Dortmund on 51, and two behind Bayern Munich in fifth. Frankfurt is 10th.
Patrick Ochs had the game's first chance in the 22nd minute, when the Frankfurt captain's volley was deflected for a corner by Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Gekas was set free by a hopeful ball forward in the 39th when he could have shot on goal. Instead he passed to Caio, who failed to control the ball and the chance was lost.
Ochs should have scored before the interval when he had plenty of time and space but clipped Sebastian Jung's perfect cross over the cross bar from 10 meters (yards).
Freiburg improved after the break, and Cedric Makiadi finally sparked the home fans into life when his long-range effort was narrowly over in the 57th.
Gekas was unable to direct his header under the bar after a wonderful long cross from Georgios Tzavellas in the 64th.
Cisse missed at the other end minutes later, when his header from Felix Bastians' free kick was narrowly wide of the right post.
Baumann's fingertips deflected a looping Maik Franz effort onto the crossbar and out for a corner. Franz tried to rouse his teammates for the last 10 minutes, but neither side could find a winner.
"It's OK, but I'd rather have the win," Franz said.
The Hamburg derby was called off late Saturday because of a waterlogged pitch.

Bayern bosses angry at defeat

Updated Feb 6, 2011 3:37 PM ET
The future of Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal is again looking uncertain after Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Cologne angered club bosses.
President Uli Hoeness left the Mungersdorfer Stadion declining to comment, while chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was critical in his response to Bayern's capitulation after leading 2-0 at half time.

"The team completely lacked engagement in the second half," he said.
"That is frustrating and more than negligent."
The defeat left Bayern 15 points adrift of league leaders Borussia Dortmund, who still managed to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga this weekend despite being held to a draw by Schalke on Friday night.
"Dortmund must be laughing themselves to death," said Rummenigge. "They are in a totally self-produced film.
"They only draw, yet they are still the winners."
Bayern, on the other hand, were one of the big losers of the weekend as they dropped from third to fifth, failing to take advantage of a defeat for second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and a draw for third-placed Mainz.
"Second place is our minimum goal, and we could have been there today," added Rummenigge.
"These were very important points which we are now lacking. It is annoying, more than annoying.
"Somebody has got to tell the team that a game lasts 90 minutes and not just 45."
Van Gaal's position was already precarious due to rifts with Hoeness and director of sport Christian Nerlinger in recent weeks.
The upcoming Champions League clash with Inter Milan and DFB-Pokal semi-final tie with Schalke could now be crucial in determining his future.
With a 15-point deficit on Dortmund with 13 games of the season remaining, a successful league title defence is looking increasingly unlikely.
"I probably made a mistake and have got to question my half-time team talk," Van Gaal said of the defeat.
"Maybe I was too confident, which was perhaps not good."
