The Signing

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has signed a contract with China Roads and Bridges Corporation to carry out feasibility studies and designs for the construction of the Nairobi Western Bypass.

The construction is expected to cost Sh17.3 billion and will be funded through a concessionary loan from the Government of China.

The Kenya National Highway Authority Corporate Affairs Manager Charles Njogu says the proposed four lanes highway measuring 16.5 kilometres with a design speed of 100 kilometres per hour will connect the southern bypass at Gitaru and northern by bypass at Ruaka.

Njogu says the Bypass has been identified as a link necessary for the completion of a system of ring roads around Nairobi city aimed at easing traffic in the Central Business District.

“The Nairobi Western Bypass project will be implemented as an Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract (EPC) and will include facilities like walkways on each side at Wangige, Kihara Ndenderu and Ruaka Townships, underpasses for pedestrian traffic at market centres, a bus terminus at Wangige among others,” Njogu stated in a statement.

Other facilities include noise barriers on interchange slip roads at Ruaka to minimize noise disturbance on resettlements and a central steel barrier for pedestrian control and safety along the main bypass alignment.

The new Bypass follows the completion of Northern and Eastern Bypass while the construction of the Nairobi Southern Bypass is nearing completion.

It is also expected to enhance economic growth along the areas it will pass through

The maiden planting at the one-million-acre Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme is set to start this week, bringing the ambitious plan aimed at reducing food shortage in Kenya closer to reality.

Israeli firm Green Arava, which won the Sh14 billion contract to develop the model farm, will be planting the first maize crop on 1,000 acres for a start.

The model farm, which is estimated at 10, 000 acres, is being used as a demonstration block for developing the entire one million acres set for irrigation.

“We have planned to start planting the first crop this week under the model farm, and we hope that the weather will be favourable for the exercise,” said the project manager Richard Kanui.

The exercise was supposed to start last week but was hampered by the rains that have been pounding the region recently.

Mr Kanui told the Business Daily that the first maize crop from the scheme is expected in August as it will only take three months to mature and it will be processed on the farm.

Already, the contractor has placed an order for a milling plant from South Africa to process maize flour. The model farm will guide the structure of the irrigation scheme.

The plant, said Mr Kanui, comes with a dryer, making it easy to contain cases of afflatoxin that are common in the area given its humid condition.
“This is a state-of-the-art milling plant that has the ability to package the flour once it has been processed,” he said.

He said that Green Arava was already designing the logo that will be used on the packaging material to market the products from the irrigation scheme.

The Galana project is expected to cut Kenya’s reliance on rain-fed agriculture that is blamed for the perennial food shortage by employing technology to cut cost of food production.

Green Arava expects a minimum of 80 bags of maize from an acre under good farming practices borrowed from Israel. The centre pivotequipment that is being used to irrigate crop has been installed on the farm.

Noam Ftecha, the lead engineer with Green Arava, said the equipment can perform several tasks, including applying liquid fertiliser.

The Sh260 billion Galana project is a public-private partnership in which the government will be providing infrastructural services with the investors expected to plant crops and set up processing plants.

Foreign investors top the list of firms lined up for the project.

The Ministry of Agriculture is evaluating a list of 80 local and international investors who have sent in applications to lease land at the scheme.

Kenya will send more students to learn dryland farming technologies and automated agriculture in Israel, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced today.
The President said the experience of Israelis in harnessing harsh and dry lands to produce crops will be utilised to increase food production in Kenya.

The President said since 70 per cent of Kenya’s land was arid, it was prudent to send more students to Israel besides those who are already studying in Israeli institutions.

He said a decision to send more students and open up more Israeli institutions to Kenyan learners was reached on Tuesday when he held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

President Kenyatta spoke when he visited a Kibbutz where more than 70 Kenyan students are learning new farming technologies.

University students make up the bulk of those in Israel with 25 students each from Egerton University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The University students are on an 11 month training course. The rest of the students are from the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI).

The Kenyan students are learning intensive agriculture productions techniques, design and application of automated agriculture and irrigation systems.

President Kenyatta said the knowledge learnt by the students will be used to revolutionise agriculture in Kenya starting with the Galana-Kulalu Irrigation Scheme where the students will first apply their skills.

“A desert can truly be a paradise if we are committed. This place is drier than any part of Kenya but look at what they produce,” said President Kenyatta who was taken on a tour of organic tomato farms and a section of the Kibbutz for dairy cows.

He urged the students to take seriously the lessons they learn while in Israel because Kenya is waiting for their expertise. The President said the Galana-Kulalu scheme will be ready to absorb the students when the first group returns in a few months time.

President Kenyatta said the scheme would now have been productive were it not for the misplaced priorities of Kenyan politicians. The President said Kenyan politicians have the habit of prioritising personal and tribal competitions instead of putting the interest of the country before everything else.

The Galana-Kulalu scheme was delayed for more than three years by obstacles created by politicians.

Irrigation agency starts work on 10,000ha model farm at Galana-Kulalu scheme

National Irrigation Board (NIB) has started developing the 10,000-acre model farm at Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme ahead of the visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 5 for official launch.

The start of the project follows successful field trials to determine the best variety seed to plant on the farm.

The project, currently behind schedule due to insufficient allocation of funds by the exchequer, has been launched by Water Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, paving the way for the growing of maize on the entire model farm at one go.

According to NIB, which is implementing the project, 4,000 acres is being targeted by the end of June, ahead of the planned launch.
Israel is the major financier of the model farm having provided Sh7 billion loan. The plan is one of Jubilee government’s flagship projects, which are supposed to be delivered within five years of its first term.

“We are now ready to plant the entire 10,000 acres after successful trials to find the right seed to plant in this region,” said Thuita Mwangi, chief engineer, planning and design, at the NIB.

The new development happens amid confusion at the NIB following the suspension of the top management, including the General Manager Daniel Barasa on alleged corrupt deals in procurement.
