Japan and Kenya sign Sh27.3bn deal to build Dongo Kundu hub

Kenya has secured Sh27.3 billion from Japan to construct an industrial and commercial hub in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa.

The first phase of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which is expected to alter the coastal town in terms of infrastructure and business, is scheduled to be ready by 2019.

An agreement signed by the governments of Kenya and Japan on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Convention on Africa Development (Ticad) shows that of the Sh27.3 billion ($269.9 million), Sh21.36 billion is a long term soft loan while Sh5.969 billion is a grant.

“The Government of Japan will finance the basic infrastructure of phase one through a concessional loan of US$210.8 million and grant assistance of US$58.9 million,” the MoU says.

The industrial and commercial hub, which will sit on 1,326 hectares, is part of the master plan for the development of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone that was conceived and prepared with assistance from Japan in 2015.

The deal involves the development of infrastructure, including Berth 1 at the Port of Mombasa, access roads, transmission line, water supply pipeline from the mainland and a sub-station, drainage, power supply and a free trade zone in the zone.

Kenya has acquired a new ship to patrol its Indian Ocean territory as the country steps up the campaign against illegal fishing which has seen it lose up to Sh10 billion annually. The Sh3.6 billion ship, which has ability to detect illegal movement of fishing vessels in Kenya’s territorial waters, is expected in the country in January.Fisheries Principal Secretary Ntiba Micheni said the sea vessel will enhance surveillance along the Kenyan coast and cut losses that result from illegal fishing by other countries.

“We now have a new sea vessel that is expected in the country in the next few months, this will play a key role in stopping illegal fishing on our waters,” said Prof Ntiba.

Speaking yesterday during the ongoing State House Summit on Agriculture, Prof Ntiba said that the new fisheries law which took effect in July compel foreign fishermen to declare the worth of their catch before leaving. The PS noted that the Port Measure Status agreement, which allows other people to fish in Kenyan waters, requires fishermen to come back at the port and declare what they caught.

“Anyone who fishes in our territory is now required to declare the value of the fish that he has caught for the purpose of paying some money to the country,” he said.

He noted that the new law has imposed a fine of Sh50 million on any person engaging in illegal fishing within territorial waters. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett noted that Kenya’s fish per capita has risen from 3.7 kilogrammes per year to seven kilogrammes, attributing the trend to an increase in aquaculture in the country. Mr Bett said that fish farming had improved production from 23,000 tonnes to 48,000 tonnes currently.

“The increase in fish consumption is mainly a result of the aquaculture that our farmers have adopted,” said Mr Bett.

Kenyan fishermen are expected to fish up to 200 nautical miles from the Kenyan shores Under Exclusive Economic Zones rules, but they operate at below five nautical miles for lack of appropriate fishing gear to explore deep seas.

“If well tapped, fishing is a great contributor to the economy of our country and we are trying our best to increase our potential by requesting for more funding from the Treasury,” said the CS.

The country has a large exclusive fishing zone with potential to produce 300,000 tonnes of fish annually valued at about Sh75 billion. However, it is yet to utilise the opportunity optimally.

Plans underway to construct multi-million dollar airport in Kenya

Kenya plans to construct a major airport in the Eastern part of the country,area governor Martin Wambora has announced. The multi-million dollar airport in Kenya will be constructed in Embu County. The International Airport is expected to cost US$ 99 Million.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora said his county is currently in talks with the National government along with other partners to ensure that the multi-million dollar airport in Kenya kicks off as soon as possible during his tenure in office.

He added that the Airport in Kenya’s Embu County would be constructed a fresh or look into expanding the current airstrip at Don Bosco and transform it into international standards.

Wambora said that he has championed a group of foreign investors who have agreed to pump in more funds that will see the project kick off.

“If we construct the Airport we will be sure to get more revenues as the county, improve the business situation in the county.

He said a concept paper was already being worked on by the Ministry of Transport that will see the airstrip’s runway extended from the current 1.5 kilometres to four kilometres.

“We want to transform the countries transport sector and the construction of the Airport will see us get to the level that we all want to see the county be at” he added
He said the completed airport would have terminal buildings, warehouses, hangars, aprons and free trade zone.
Asked if the Sh10 billion was available, an upbeat Mr Wambora said: “The money will be found.”

The Embu Airstrip is situated approximately 10 minutes by road South East of Embu’s central business district, along the Embu-Kiritiri Highway.

The governor added that the construction of the project is expected to kick off early next year and will take some months to complete and that will be determined by the terms and conditions of the contractor.

“Once we finish on getting funds we will consult good consultants to ensure that we get a contractor who will carry out the projects well” he added

President Uhuru Kenyatta lays the foundation stone for a 2.5 Billion institute.

President Uhuru Kenyatta Tuesday laid the foundation stone for an ultramodern centre at the University of Nairobi to house the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies. The institute at the UoN Upper Kabete Campus will be a global centre of excellence in environmental governance and its linkages with peace and democracy. The institute aims to create a culture of peace through transformational leadership in environmental governance. President Kenyatta said Wangari Maathai had a vision to establish such an institute before she died and it was an honour for the university to host the institute.

“Before her death, Wangari had conceived the idea of establishing the institute and shared the idea with the university leadership and her friends across the world,” he said.

President Kenyatta said the late professor’s legacy will continue living, adding that she is the best role model for all Kenyans who want to contribute to the progress of the country.

“I am encouraged to learn this Institute is already playing a critical role in reducing conflicts in communities by involving women in green energy technology, and in environmental conservation,” said the President.

The construction of the institute at a cost of Sh1.4 billion is being funded by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank. After laying the foundation stone, President Kenyatta joined students in one of the lecture halls at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. The President called on the students to shun tribalism and to work together as Kenyans to achieve their dreams. He also called on the students to abandon tribal organisations and instead yearn for the higher national ideals of progress and unity.

“The most important thing is for each one of you to get a job after graduating and that will not be determined by where you come from,” said the President.

The President, who answered questions from the students on leadership and youth policies, said that the youth will not achieve leadership on the basis of ethnicity. The President said the Jubilee Government has put in place measures to help graduates get employment by creating opportunities for internship. He said the government plans to reward, with tax rebates, companies that offer internship. Government departments will also start offering internship to prepare graduates for the workplace. The President urged the students to promote unity, not only in Kenya but also a regional scale.

Construction of ultra modern weighbridges in Kenya nears completion



Ultra modern weighbridges in Kenya
National Highways Authority has announced that the construction of two ultra modern weighbridges in Kenya is at its final stages. The weighbridges are being constructed on either side of the Northern Corridor at Mariakani.

KeNHA Axle Load Manager in Charge, Muita Ngatia said that the US$ 7.3m weighbridges will be completed July.This he said was meant to give time for installation of electronomical equipment in either side of the road. Commissioning of the ultra modern weighbridges in Kenya is slated for August.

“We are happy with the progress. The works are so far being implemented as per the contract. We expect the project to be complete at the end of July. Commissioning will be in August,” Mr. Ngatia said.

Weighbridges to ease movement of goods and services


further he pointed out that the weighbridges will fasten the movement of goods and services along the Northern Corridor.

On the other hand, The Kenya Transporters Association says the weighbridges will ensure members are served better.

The Northern Corridor is one of the busiest and most important transport routes in East and Central Africa. It provides a gateway through Kenya to the landlocked economies in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern DR Congo and Southern Sudan.

The foremost Northern Corridor transport network connected to the Port of Mombasacomprises of a road network and rail-lake transport.It also has inland water routes, container terminals commonly known as ICDs, Tororo Inland Port and an oil pipeline.

However, the alternative transport network that serves the landlocked Great Lakes Region is through the Central Corridor linked to Dar es Salaam.

Africa’s largest meeting hub to be constructed in Nairobi

Plans to construct the largest meeting center in Africa are at an advanced stage with the government set to float tenders for construction of the facility.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala says the Bomas International Convention Centre to be put up in Langata will be constructed under the Public Private Partnership model.

Balala spoke when he handed over the Kenyatta International Convention Centre which will be used to host the TICAD meeting next week to Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed.

For more than four decades, now the Kenyatta International Convention Centre has become synonymous with hosting high profile meetings in Kenya.

In the last 12 months, KICC has been the venue of major meets bringing together thousands of delegates from around the world. With Kenya now becoming a rising star for meetings and conventions, the country is under pressure to develop more facilities to host high end meetings.

The Bomas International Conference and Exhibition Centre will be constructed on an 82-acre piece of land where the current Bomas of Kenya is located. It will consist of Presidential and VIP pavilions, luxury hotels, conference centre halls with a capacity of hosting 10,000 delegates in one sitting, exhibition space as well as other social amenities.

Balala says the tender would be floated later this year. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed says due to Nairobi’s capacity to host high end meetings, the image of the country as a preferred investment destination has improved.

The TICAD meeting being held in Africa for the first time brings together close to 10,000 delegates from Japan and Africa to discuss ways of improving bilateral ties between the continent and the Asian country

Leading manufacturer of spices and snacks in the East African region Tropical Heat Limited is set to construct mega factory in Kenya to boost its production capacity.the US$ 4.5m mega factory in Kenya is being supported by International Finance Corporation (IFC).

In a statement IFC said that due to congestion that has been obstructing the company’s growth the financial support was necessary to boost the firm’s expansion plans.

“The facility is fully utilized and the congestion is now a major bottleneck hindering the company’s growth, hence the need for a new factory where they will relocate all their equipment currently used at the existing site,” IFC said in a statement.

The new factory will be constructed on 5,200 square metre on an eight-acre piece of land in Limuru area and it is part of the company’s expansion plan that includes introduction of new products.

The mega development, whose construction is ongoing, is expected to be complete by the end of next year.

Tropical Heat Ltd confirmed that it is also anticipating to acquire new machinery and production lines and also a cold storage facility built mainly to handle locally sourced potatoes, a major raw material for crisps.

“This new storage facility will bring benefits both to smallholder farmers and reduce risks along the company’s supply chain majorly by improving storage capacity and duration,” IFC further said in a statement.

The company manufactures a wide range of products and spices including herbs, seasonings, masala and salts. Its assortment of snacks includes potato crisps, ethnic snacks, Kenyan chevda, peanuts, rice cakes and extruded snacks. The company started operations in Thika town in 1974 as a cottage business run by a single family inside their house.

It is one of the uprising companies that have featured prominently in the annual Business Daily/KPMG sponsored Top 100 Companies survey.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Wednesday received the visual presentations and artistic impressions of the proposed Beyond Zero model referral hospital that is planned for construction in coming months. Although the Sh2.2 billion State-of-the-Art facility incorporates all the features of a modern hospital, the proposed health complex has special features that include the components of wellness, the promotion of the family and takes special care of those with physical and sensory challenges. The new facility will stand on an area of 20,000 square metres, have a 150-bed capacity, 7-bed Intensive Care Unit and specially land-scaped healing/therapeutic gardens. The proposed hospital is conceptualized in a modular format that ensures flexibility in terms of location and phased construction and equipping. Although the new ultra-modern hospital is an all-inclusive facility, it lays special focus on mothers and children with additional facilities for emotional wellness for those rescued from gender violence and Female Genital Mutilation related health issues. A modern bus station incorporated right outside the doors of the hospital is another key feature of the new facility to ensure quick accessibility by all patients.The visual impressions of the hospital were presented to the First Lady by architects from Lexicon+ION and members of the Beyond Zero Secretariat.
After receiving the impressions, the First Lady described the concept as great work.

“You got [the concept] right. I love it. I can see [the hospital] already. Thank you,” Margaret said, beaming with optimism that her dream to put up the hospital was slowly crystallising.

The First Lady talked about the hospital for the first time last August when she made an extensive of the ultra-modern Aiiku Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, that specialises in providing high quality maternal and child medical care. During that visit, she presented her vision of the Beyond Zero hospital to the President of the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA), Akihiko Tanaka. Other notable features of the proposed hospital is the use of Green architecture, maximum use of local natural materials, use of solar energy for lighting and use of treated rain water for its daily operations. The hospital will also have both blood and human milk banks- a new concept in modern hospitals. Earlier, the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Toshitsugu Uesawa paid a courtesy call on the First Lady at State House where he delivered a personal message from Akie Abe, the spouse to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In her message, Akie said she looks forward to visit Kenya this weekend during the Ticad conference, also being attended by the Japanese premier. She also said she will be happy to prepare and serve Japanese cuisine to the VIPs at the Inter-Continental Hotel especially the First Ladies accompanying Heads of State and Government who will be attending the Ticad conference. I had a problem with thika 'super highway', i complained in the comment section when ever it was used in an article till i got tired... its not super is some sections still have bumbs and people dont follow road use where the innermost line is supposed to be for cars driving at 100kmph only..
alafu sometime unaskia things like 'poachers were caught with sophisticated weapons/guns' .... whats this sophistication? are we kids or something, tell us which weapons, usinh words like that make us think that they were caught with weapons made for space mission...

i know man!! i feel the use of these adjectives highlights how less knowledgeable the reporter is in the said field of report. eg if any of them knew anything on matters security, they would give the names and specs of said weapons....not sophisticated weapons (which btw every time they use that word, i picture the Guns in Star Wars and i get annoyed).
Honestly though, hata Thika road is just a highway. it's not a Super highway. What does super highway even mean?? would it take anything from Thika road if they just said Thika Highway.
