Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto stormed to victory in the men's 3,000 metre steeplechase final on Wednesday, ensuring the East African nation maintained its iron grip on the event it has won in every Games since 1984.

The 21-year-old produced a final lap sprint that saw him grab gold in an Olympic record 8 minutes 3.28 seconds. Kipruto was so far ahead of his rivals that he started celebrating and waving to the crowd at the start of the final straight. Evan Jager won a rare medal for the United States in the race - their first since 1984 - overtaking Kenya's double Olympic champion Ezekiel Kemboi in the last 50 metres to take silver.

Why start celebrating like that?..he should have smashed the record even more...I have also noticed that Kenyan athletes only seem to care for gold...once they see a Kenyan winning the rest just let go..why not aim for 123 finish?

I was looking forward to a 1,2 and 3, but what we consider as a failure, to others it's humongous and impossible to achieve. So we are still on top.

Rio 2016: Retiring Kemboi stripped of steeplechase bronze

Ezekiel Kemboi announced his retirement after finishing third in the 3000m steeplechase but will not finish his career with a bronze medal.

Ezekiel Kemboi has been stripped of the bronze medal in the 3000 metre steeplechase after being disqualified for stepping outside the track limits.

The 34-year-old Kenyan was defending his title at Rio 2016, but finished behind compatriot Conseslus Kipruto and Evan Jager of the United States.

Kemboi, a two-time Olympic champion, announced his retirement following the race, but has been denied the opportunity to bow out with a medal following an appeal from the French team.
Mahiedine Mekhissi, who crossed the line in fourth, has subsequently been awarded the bronze, bringing Kemboi's career to a sad end.

The race report on the IAAF's official website read: "A protest was presented by the French team, claiming that Kemboi had stepped outside the track on the curve after clearing the water jump.
"France's Mahiedine Mekhissi, silver medalist at the past two Olympics, was then awarded the bronze medal, having crossed the line in 8:11.52."
