What makes Nairobi Africa's 'most intelligent' city

(CNN)For a second year in a row, Kenya's busy capital city of Nairobi has been named the most intelligent city in Africa -- failing, however, to make it to the world's top seven finalists.

According to the Intelligent Community Forum, "intelligent communities" are those that have taken "conscious steps" to create an economy that can prosper in the "broadband economy." The group has recently released its latest rankings, recognizing the achievements of communities that have built inclusive, prosperous economies on a basis of information and communication technologies.

Nairobi was the only African city to appear on their shortlist of 21 hubs throughout the world for 2015.
Intelligent Community Forum co-founder Robert Bell says: "We see a strong foundation being put into place [in Nairobi]: sensible, pro-growth government policy, a more diversified economy, and an innovation ecosystem of startups, international companies and universities.
"Nairobi certainly has the opportunity to build an exciting future for its citizens, businesses and institutions."
The Kenyan capital, however, didn't make it to the next round that will see seven communities around the world contesting in June for the 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year award -- in alphabetical order, the 2015 Top7 Intelligent Communities were Arlington County (U.S.), Columbus, (U.S.), Ipswich (Australia), Mitchell (U.S.), New Taipei City (Taiwan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Surrey (Canada).

Nairobi was the only African city on the short list of 21 hubs worldwide for 2015.
This is the second year in a row that the capital has made it to this short list, and apart from Cape Town in 2008, no other African city has achieved that. Intelligent Community Forum co-founder Robert Bell said, in a statement, that Nairobi made it to the list because of its level of innovation.

Like I told you, population growth is nothing to be proud of especially when the growth does not match with economic growth. 1000,000 people won't rent a $1000 a month apartment if they're poor but one person would rent it if they were rich. I'm sorry but your level of understanding economics is wanting.

The questions you should rather be asking yourself are - is Dar's population growth sustainable? Reckless outbursts of population in some cases calls for regulation measures other than celebration. Dar's population growth could be due to lack of infrastructure in other regions causing everyone to want to be in Dar or unplanned parenting. Dar's infrastructure can barely support its current population - that someone would boast of its population growing further is laughable to say the least.[/QUOT]

You didn't even get it. The point is, is the population growth in Dar increasing or reducing the average living standards? Check out Dar's GDP growth vs population growth for instance - how do they fair. In economics, population growth should be sustainable otherwise you're growing a failed city.

But good cities infrastructural planning and development precedes population, look at Kigali!

Did you know that in 3 years since Thika road was expanded Nairobi has developed along this stretch and now Thika Town and Nairobi has merged to form one enormous city, come 2020, Thika will be just another Nairobi Side!

Be realistic.

We are talking about a large city like Dar here, where clearly there's abig demand for such facilities, not some remote rural area.

Nairobi is dynamic because you need rapid changes, those slums do not depict a modern city. They simply have to go, and from what I've seen above on Kibera photos, indeed you need a face lift badly or rather Nairobi needs a face lift and that is dynamic.

Dar, on the other hand, grows, we have seen growth in Dar during Kikwetes like we have never seen before. It was simply a rush.

Why are u only singling out this one area called Kibera? U can as well tell us that the whole of Nairobi comprises of shanty neighborhoods, thus in a dire need for upgrade. But we all know u wouldnt dare say that cos u know that much of Nairobi is well developed, with some facilities almost comparable with those in the developed countries.
The city authorities are only going about improving as well as augmenting the existing infrastructure.

When population grows in any city expect infrastructure to grow along with it and that is exactly what we are experiencing in Dar right now, many new buildings, new areas within Dar are emerging. We used to have tall buildings in Dar city center only, now even those areas where we used to say are outskirts of Dar like Ubungo, Kimara, Temeke, Mbezi, and so on and so forth we see huge development with multi storey buildings being erected constantly. We see flyovers coming in different areas, we see huge bridges which cross the sea to cater for city growth.

Be open minded and realistic, dynamic simply means "changes". Growth means expanding.

Your reasoning regarding this matter is rather skewed. High population does not result into development. There's no co-relation between population and development in fact. The world is full of hghly populated places, but with the people living in very derelict conditions. If your argument is right, then Kinshasa for example should indeed be one of the most developed cities in Africa.
Some other factors have to come into play in order to stimulate development growth, ie, the availability of, as well as wise exploitation of the resources, a hard working population as well as a perspicacious leadership.

Granted, the Dar CBD is currently undergoing a rapid growth, with shimmering towers mushrooming at a rate the human eye can hardly follow. But can the same be said about the surrounding neighborhoods? Look at the state of most of the suburbs, the roads and the unending public complaints about erratic water and power supply, sewerage systems, and several other public amenities.
