The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) yesterday banned motorcycles and three-wheelers, popularly known as Bajaj, from Dar es Salaam's central business district in a bid to control congestion in the city.
From now onwards motorcycles and Bajajs will not be allowed to go beyond the limits set by the public transport regulator.
A Sumatra statement issued yesterday stated that motorcycles and Bajajs should ply not beyong Sam Nujoma road, Mandela road, and Kurasini, adding that motorcircles and Bajajs plying the Tegeta should not go beyond Mwenge.
"They are confined to the earmarked limits. Violators of the new system will face penalties of less than 50,000/-," the statement said.
Sumatra said that regional traffic police authorities in the three Dar es Salaam municipalities – Temeke, Ilala and Kinondoni – met yesterday and agreed on the modalities of implementing the ban.
This latest decision intends to reduce congestion in Dar routes and improve the city's environment.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a technical committee of six people to research and identify a speed governor system suitable for the country's environment to minimize traffic accidents which have been causing deaths and disabilities to many people.
Home Affairs Minister Shamsi Vuai Nahodha announced about the committee yesterday at a meeting attended by traffic police officers, SUMATRA) and National Insurance Corporation officials.
The technical committee will include 6 officials from the traffic police, Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
