Tanzania: Country Illiteracy Rate On the Rise - allAfrica.com
The country's illiteracy rate has gone up by one per cent to reach 23per cent at the end of last year. The Adult and Non-Formal Education Director, Basilina Levira, said the figure increased from 77 per cent in 2012 to 78 per cent in 2015.
The Director, under the ministry of education and vocation training, was speaking at the 50th International Literacy Day.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner "Reading the Past, Writing the Future".
The Day celebrates and honours the past five decades of national and international engagement, efforts and progress made to increase literacy rates around the world.
The event also addresses current challenges and looks to innovative solutions to further boost literacy in the future.
