Spain’s High Court announced today that it will
decide tomorrow if it will provisionally suspend
all domestic football competitions from Saturday
16 May after a lengthy hearing in which lawyers
from the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE)
and the Professional Football League (LFP)
presented their arguments, the latter being the
first to submit their case.

In their presentation, the LFP insisted in the
illegality of the strike called by the AFE and
accused the organization of devising “a
ceremony of confusion” by separately serving
notice of the strike action to three bodies: the
Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration
Service (SIMA), the LFP and the lawyers. The
League claimed that the notification arrived at
their headquarters on Sunday 10 May, despite
the fact that the RFEF had announced
suspension of domestic league competition on 6
May. “We believe that the strike is abusive as it
has been called on matchdays which cannot be
rescheduled”, they concluded.

In response, the AFE’s lawyer Iván López
clarified that the strike had been announced on
10 May at 18:00 hours and that SIMA’s
involvement was merely to act as mediators.
They also explained that there were flaws in the
solicitude of preliminary measures and cited
Article 732 of the Civil Procedure Rules which
states that whoever seeks an injunction must
provide a security bond - around five million
euros.

LFP President Javier Tebas estimated that losses
of around 50 million euros would be suffered
per matchday if the strike goes ahead while AFE
President Luis Rubiales countered: “The support
from the players is unanimous but some clubs
are putting pressure on them. Our lawyers
picked apart the LFP’s arguments to show that
this strike is legal. We congratulate the clubs
who are not pressurizing their playing staff and
congratulate the players for remaining united”,
he said.
