Mirambo was the most famous of Tanganyika’s nineteenth-century rulers. Mirambo’s homeland was north-west of Tabora, in the old centre of Nyamwezi settlement and commerce where coastal intrusion was most resented, but he rose to prominence in the late 1860s, when firearms gave new strength to chiefs, local ivory supplies were exhausted, and power rested on the control of trade routes, especially those leading north and west from Tabora to Lake Victoria and the Manyema. In one aspect, then, Mirambo was a conservative; like Mbegha, he was the champion of the old culture. His ‘empire’ was not based on new political principles. A minor hereditary ruler, he conquered neighbouring chiefdoms and replaced rulers by their more compliant relatives. He exercised a hereditary chief’s ritual functions and was a noted rainmaker.

Yet in another aspect Mirambo was simply the greatest of nineteenth-century warlords. His name meant ‘corpses’ and was given him by his rugaruga, his small standing army of brutalised young gunmen of the kind whom firearms bred throughout eastern Africa. ‘We never take middle aged men or old men to our wars’, Mirambo was quoted as saying, ‘always youths not yet troubled with wives or children. They have keener eyesand lither limbs. . . Fifteen of our boys died at one spot for the sake of one piece of red cloth.’1 Unlike other Nyamwezi chiefs, Mirambo personally led his men to war and was idolised by them. His visitors recognised, as in Uhehe, that ‘we were amongst men who felt they belonged to a great kingdom ’.

Alongside the conservative and the warlord, there was a third element in Mirambo’s character. He is almost the only leader of his time whose mind is accessible to historians, and his conversations with European visitors reveal a man with larger conceptions than his contemporaries. His campaigns were in effect a bid for control of the whole western plateau. He sought alliance, unsuccessfully, with Kabaka Mutesa of Buganda and the British Consul in Zanzibar. He welcomed a European missionary ‘to teach the people how to make guns and powder and cloth’.3 ‘Here there are too many chiefs’, he told a traveller in 1882: Only two or three are needed, allied with one another. . . If the Arabs had thought of coming to terms with me, Mutesa, and Isike, the country would be at peace. . . But the Arabs are proud and jealous.. .They regard me as a savage mshenzi. . . I hate them, but I am not so devoid of sense as to prefer continual warfare to a clearly defined common interest.

Although seeing the problem so clearly, however, Mirambo knew he could not solve it. ‘My headmen’, he confessed, ‘obey me only out of fear. . . As for my captains, they are good for nothing but war.’ When he died on 2 December 1884 his ‘empire’ collapsed.

Baada ya kifo chake wakulima katika nchi mbalimbali za Ulaya waliita mbwa zao kwa jina "Napoleon".
Angalau aliacha sheria nzuri katika nchi kadhaa baada ya kuzivamia. Mirambo aliacha nini?
 
Milambo amekulia Uyowa, huko Urambo. Hapo kwihara ilikua ikulu ya mtemi wa nyanyembe na ndio alikua shoga zake waarabu. Kaburi lake lipo Urambo, makazi yake yapo urambo pia. Ni kweli Milambo alikua na uwezo mkubwa kivita, alikua haogopi kitu. Milambo alikua mlevi na mvuta bangi pia. Uwezo wake wa kivita umeipa jina kambi ya jeshi Tabora, Milambo Ballacks. Mkwawa nae hakua wa mchezo, tofauti na Milambo yeye alikua na ushauri wa waarabu waliomshauri akawa muislam, hivyo vita zilikua chache upande wake.
