MPs: Uhuru in race to the end

Some 40 MPs allied to the The National Alliance (TNA) have accused unnamed "forces" of spreading the "rumour" that Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta was planning to drop out of the presidential race.

The MPs dismissed the reports that Mr Kenyatta was ready to step-down in favour of United Democratic Forum (UDF) presidential aspirants Musalia Mudavadi.

The MPs, who were addressing the media after a Parliamentary Group meeting at the Boulevard Hotel, asked Mr Kenyatta and United Republican Party (URP) leader William Ruto to assure their supporters that they were still on a joint ticket.

"We note with deep concern that the agreement stating clearly that there will be a nomination between Mr Kenyatta and Mr Mudavadi, there are a lot of rumours circulating that Uhuru is to step down. We dismiss this notion and categorically state that our candidate is Uhuru," Gachoka MP Mutava Musyimi said on behalf of the group.

Nithi MP Kareke Mbiuki and nominated MP Rachel Shebesh threatened to mobilise their supporters out of the "Jubilee coalition" if Mr Kenyatta stepped down.

They added that Mr Kenyatta cannot make such a decision without consulting with the party and its supporters.

"If we are not given a chance to have Mr Kenyatta on the ballot through such deals that are being claimed, then the people of Nithi would rather vote for ODM," Mr Mbiuki said.

Mr Musyimi also said that they expect a "free and fair" nomination process between Mr Kenyatta and Mr Mudavadi, adding that anything short of this will lead them to abandoning the coalition.
"We know that there are some forces trying to scuttle this alliance and we are not going to entertain their blackmail, intimidation or threats," assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando said.

Nominated MP Amina Abdallah added that there were already reports that their supporters were not keen on continuing to register as voters over the "uncertainty of Mr Kenyatta being on the ballot."

The TNA-URP-UDF agreement signed on Tuesday evening states that Mr Kenyatta and Mr Mudavadi are to fight it out for the coalition's presidential ticket by December 18.

The agreement however does not indicate how this nomination process will be conducted.

The TNA MPs also expressed outrage with the inclusion on Kanu in the deal, though the former ruling party has a separate deal with UDF.

They said that they were seeing a situation where some people are trying to "revive" Kanu.

"We are not going to allow this backdoor entry of Kanu. We left Kanu a long time ago and we are not ready to go back," Mr Kabando said.

About 40 MPs allied to The National Alliance on Thursday said Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta will not step down in favour of Musalia Mudavadi and threatened to support Prime Minister Raila Odinga if he (Uhuru) does not contest presidency.

The MPs met and threatened to support Raila should Uhuru be denied the opportunity to be the Presidential candidate in the alliance.

"If it is not Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto then all roads would lead to Bondo," said Agriculture Assistant Minister Kareke Mbiuki. Prime Minister Raila Odinga's ancestral home is Bondo hundreds of kilometres away from the lake side town of Kisumu.

The MPs accused a group of powerful individuals of working behind the scenes to have Mudavadi as the alliance presidential candidate, saying they will not succumb to that pressure.

"We are giving them notice that we shall not entertain blackmail. Uhuru is the shareholder, prefect and leader of TNA," said Sports Assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando.

There was palpable tension Thursday within the TNA-URP-UDF alliance after a group of 40 MPs allied to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta threatened a mass walk-out if Uhuru was not the presidential candidate.

Uhuru-ruto.jpg

The Uhuru-allied MPs read mischief at what they said was a scheme by powerful individuals to have Uhuru step down in favour of his colleague – Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi – in the March 4 elections.

And they threatened to join the alliance of their political nemesis, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, if their strong warning was not heeded.

"If it is not
Uhuru Kenyatta andWilliam Ruto, then all roads would lead to Bondo," said Minister Kareke Mbiuki. Raila's ancestral home is in Bondo in Nyanza.

The move complicates Mudavadis' position, coming just a day after the Sabatia MP was forced to battle internal opposition from party officials who claimed that the move did not have their blessings. The National Executive Council, however, later ratified the decision.

But in a swift rejoinder, TNA, URP, UDF and
Charity Ngilu's Narc said their legal teams will begin meeting to draft nomination procedures for presidential candidates. It was not clear whether or not Ngilu is now a member of the alliance as she had attended the rival ODM/Wiper coalition meeting on Tuesday.

Thursday, the 40 MPs accused a group of powerful individuals of working behind the scenes to have Mudavadi as the alliance presidential candidate and warned that they would not succumb to pressure.

"We are giving them notice that we shall not entertain blackmail. Uhuru is the shareholder, prefect and leader of TNA," said Sports Assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando.

But defending the alliance, an Uhuru ally - who requested for anonymity - said the reports were propaganda being peddled by some State House operatives opposed to Mudavadi working with Uhuru.

URP's displeasure

"One of these guys even kept calling Thursday demanding that they come up with measures to fight the propaganda… It is something to be ignored because there is no big deal and there will be a process to determine who will take the position in the next 14 days," he said.

At the same time, the other major coalition partner - Ruto's URP - also expressed its displeasure at reports that Kanu had been incorporated into the deal under the UDF umbrella.

URP Spokesman Aden Duale, who is the URP spokesman, told
The Standard by telephone that the party would not work with Kanu under the agreement.

"As a party, we are categorical that we are not working with Kanu and we are going to reconsider our position should UDF insist that the Independence party be part of the team," said the Dujis MP.

But in a swift rejoinder, Mr Abraham Limo, a UDF director and chairman of the National Elections Board (NEB), insisted that Kanu had a valid pre-election agreement that could not be wished away.

"In UDF, we believe in politics of inclusiveness as opposed to exclusion if we have to deliver the Presidency in the first round. We have an agreement with Kanu in the same way that TNA has an agreement with Najib Balala's United Republican Congress, which should not bother URP," said Limo.

The UDF director said differences between individual politicians in the alliance should be put aside so that a formidable team moves to focus on winning the election.

Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi and Secretary-General Nick Salat said the party supported Mudavadi for the Presidency under the alliance but that if Uhuru won at the nomination stage, Kanu would back him.

Gideon said he held no grudge against Ruto, who has taken the Presidential running mate position under the alliance.

"We are no longer at war politically with Ruto. We will now work with him as our brother in ensuring that our team bags victory come the March 4, 2013 poll," said Gideon.

Salat said the UDF-Kanu alliance was valid and could not be wished away, adding that what had happened was an expansion of the alliance.

And the Rev Mutava Musyimi, the chairman of a team charged with affairs of the TNA-URP Alliance, said rumours being spread by people opposed to the alliance to the effect that Uhuru had stepped down for Mudavadi had affected voter registration in the backyard of the Gatundu South MP.

Uhuru and Ruto have been indicted by the International Criminal Court over the 2007/2008 post-election violence in which 1,133 people died and more than 500,000 uprooted from their homes.

"There are a lot of rumours that Uhuru has stepped aside but we say here that Uhuru will be on the ballot. We won't succumb to any pressure," said Musyimi.

His Deputy and Nominated MP Amina Abdalla said if an unfair process was employed to lock out Uhuru, TNA would withdraw from the coalition.

Mudavadi's UDF was roped into the alliance on the D-day of the coalition building, when Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Minister Moses Wetang'ula joined Prime Minister
Raila Odinga in an alliance geared at taking power come March 2013.

Fighting chance

Uhuru and Ruto sought out Mudavadi to strengthen the TNA/URP alliance, and assured him a fighting chance with Uhuru in the presidential nominations. Ruto was to remain the running mate irrespective of the nomination outcome.

Thursday, TNA-friendly MPs said the deal remained as it originally was between their party and URP.

"They now want to impose a leader they can control…we are giving them notice that we shall not entertain their blackmail," said Kabando.

The MPs met at Hotel Boulevard in
Nairobi after Ms Abdalla, a close ally of Uhuru, summoned them to the meeting.

"Due to arising complexities, unexpected scenarios and swift dynamics, TNA Parliamentary Group (sic) needs to meet urgently. Either we are at the front in emerging plans or we sink, and regret. Let's meet at Hotel Boulevard," read Ms Abdalla's invite.

After the noon meeting, Nithi MP Mbiuki warned: "Any attempt to impose a Kibaki successor will boomerang. Alliances without valid negotiations are illegitimate. Shadowy mandarins extracting proxy state power to inherit themselves must be rejected. We'll troop them to dejection and oblivion. TNA is unshakeable," said Mbiuki.

In Summary

  • Amidst the push and shove, the question being asked is: which is the place of the son of Mululu in the Kibaki succession? Has Mr Mudavadi gambled himself out of the presidency?
  • He will certainly be a force to reckon with if he wins the Jubilee ticket but he equally faces the risk of being rejected, like in 2002 when he lost his parliamentary seat, if he does not wrestle the flag from Mr Kenyatta
  • Under their coalition agreement, Mr Mudavadi is supposed to compete with Mr Kenyatta for the presidential ticket in two weeks and settle for the post of Majority Leader if he loses

TNA leader Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed claims that he will shelve his presidential ambitions in favour of his coalition partner Musalia Mudavadi.

Mr Kenyatta blamed "enemies of the Jubilee Coalition" for creating confusion over his candidature and said he will face Mr Mudavadi, the leader of the United Democratic Forum (UDF), in nominations later this month.

"I am not afraid of going for nominations with my brother Mudavadi. When the results are out, we shall respect the will of voters and support whoever is picked as the torchbearer," Mr Kenyatta told supporters in Kiambu town on his way to his Gatundu rural home where he registered as a voter on Saturday.

Some TNA MPs who accompanied Mr Kenyatta accused "State House operatives" of pushing for the Deputy Prime Minister to withdraw from the presidential race.

"Some people who are close to the President seem to be purporting to act on his behalf. State House should give Kenyans a free hand to elect leaders of their choice," said Igembe MP Mithika Linturi.

State House has denied the accusations and on Friday sent out a press statement saying President Kibaki was non-partisan in the current pre-election campaigns.

Mr Kenyatta has teamed up with Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Mr Mudavadi in a pre-election coalition ahead of the March 4 elections.

The TNA leader, who was accompanied by 15 MPs including Cabinet minister Naomi Shaaban, made stopovers in Ruiru, Juja, Kimunyu and Gatundu town where he asked voters to register in large numbers ahead of the December 18 deadline.

Mr Kenyatta's declaration comes 10 days ahead of the TNA, Mr Ruto's URP and UDF nominations to choose a flag-bearer. Mr Kenyatta and Mr Mudavadi will square it out for the presidential ticket while Mr Ruto has settled for the position of running mate.

The latest turn of events puts Mr Mudavadi's ambitions in a precarious position.

Mr Mudavadi is also fighting a rebellion from a section of politicians and the tag that he is a State House project.

Hardly had the ink dried on the coalition agreement between Mr Mudavadi and the alliance between Mr Ruto and Mr Kenyatta when 40 MPs allied to the latter's The National Alliance (TNA) threatened to decamp from the party if he steps down for him. (Read: TNA members rebel against pact)

Besides the TNA rebellion, members of Mr Ruto's United Republican Party have also accused Mr Mudavadi of "sneaking in independence party Kanu into the alliance". (Read: Entry of KANU into Jubilee Coalition causes jitters)

"Mudavadi was brought on board after lengthy deliberations led by Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto. The Jubilee Coalition has no room for the divisive politics practised by Kanu in the country," said URP spokesman Aden Duale while on a campaign trail in Narok County.

But on Saturday, Kanu secretary-general Nick Salat said the party was part and parcel of the alliance by virtue of it having signed a pre-election agreement with Mr Mudavadi before he did with URP and TNA.

Mr Salat said that his party would be supporting Mr Mudavadi for the Jubilee Alliance's presidential ticket.

However, the Dujis MP, who is allied to URP, rejected Mr Salat's position and instead accused Mr Mudavadi of being behind the party's entry into the coalition.

The TNA politicians opposed to his inclusion spoke of a scheme by "a special address" (read State House) to impose Mr Mudavadi on the party.

Daudi Mchambuzi hii coalition ambayo uhuru kainunda inakusanya asilimia 72 za wapigakura wote wa Kenya..........i.e Wakikuyu, Wakalenjini, Waluhya na makabila madogo ya pwani........is is over...............yeye uhuru kajiweka kando sasa ujue wana malengo ya nguvu..................ya kumstaafisha Raila aenda na Kibaki wake aliyemuunga mkono 2002 pale aliposema "Kibaki tosha"............................badala ya uhuru tosha...........
MKUU,

MUSALIA MUDAVADI…..THE MOCKERY OF OUR TIMES

On the 21st of September 1961 the great land of Maragoli received what will turn out 52 years later to be the biggest liability in its history. It is on this day that Musalia Mudavadi was born. His father the late Moses Mudamba Mudavadi was areknowned politician popular for his wits and hard ball politics.Upon his demise in 1989,his son Musalia Mudavadi was elected Sabatia Mp. Moi had a good relationship with Musalia's father who was largely seen as responsible for delivering the Luhya support for the Moi dictatorship. To maintain this support after the death of the senior Mudavadi, Moi appointed Musalia Minister of Supplies and Marketing. After returning to Parliament in 1992, Musalia was once again appointed a Minister, this time taking over the Ministry of Finance in January 1993, a post he led until the 1997 December elections. After this election, Musalia was appointed Minister of Agriculture in 1998, a time when he also served as Leader of Government Business in Kenya's Parliament. He then moved to occupy the Ministry for Information, Transport and Communication in 1999 topping his political career as Vice President of Kenya and Minister for Transport and Communication in the run up to the December 2002 elections. The younger Mudavadi was bribed with the post of VP two months before the December 2002 elections and after KANU lost power, he went down in history as the Kenyan VP who sat in office for the shortest time ever. It is believed that this bribe prevented Mudavadi from crossing over to the Rainbow coalition, which later formed the government after defeating KANU.

INTEGRITY QUESTIONS

During his tenure, documentation exists linking Mr. Mudavadi to a chain of corruption scandals that puts to question his credibility as a honest leader who could help change Kenya.

On June 19 2002, Mudavadi wrote a project justification letter to the then Minister of Finance Mr. Chris Obure seeking exemption of the Postal Corporation of Kenya from the Audit and Exchequer Public Procurement Regulations of 2001 that was specifically set up to check corruption when it came to public procurements by government agencies.

In the same letter, Mudavadi went further and sought permission for the Posta Corporation to enter into direct procurement of goods and services from Universal Satspace (an American company), Spacenet Incorporated and First Mercantile Securities Corporation (both of Switzerland). The curious point is that according to the April 2006 Report from the Controller and Auditor General, the Companies in whose favour Mudavadi had written in his capacity as a Cabinet Minister did not exist. The Companies wanted to install broadband Network and VSAT equipment in 980 post offices across the country in a project baptized "Posta Surf " at a tune of Ksh2.8 billion.

The gist of Mudavadi's intervention is that he wanted the companies awarded the contracts without any tendering as stipulated in law. In an Affidavit dated March 27, 2006, and signed by Julius Shigolia, the Secretary of the Postal Corporation of Kenya, Mudavadi's letter "was totally unfounded, misleading and evidence of a conspiracy to defraud the Republic of Kenya."303 Mudavadi wanted the contracts awarded to Satspace, which was not registered in Kenya and despite the fact that the same job could be done by Telkom Kenya. In his Affidavit, Shigolia claimed that a company called Gilat Alldean (Africa) had fraudulently claimed that it is the parent company of Spacenet, an American company, in order to give foreign companies a legal basis of participating in contracts in Kenya.

On the basis of this well documented evidence,it is a mockery of our new dispensation for the son of Hannah to attempt to portray himself as asafe bet.Indeed he can definitively be billed as a safe bet for the very cartels that have over the years looted from public coffers.Throughout his tenure as a minister, there are no notable projects that can be cridet to his name.Indeed his move to join the Jubilee alliance was a calling from hell to join the retrogressive forces that have continuously impaired our vision for the future with dark shades.

WAS MUDAVADI GENUINE IN QUITTING

Early this year,Mudavadi announced his desire to challenge for the berth of Presidential candidate in ODM. Democratic as ODM is, Mudavadi was given a free hand to seek the support of party delegates without interference. In his campaigns, he continuously mooted and advocated for the idea of holding presidential nominations in the spirit of devolution. He opined that it was a more effective and democratic method of picking a party flag bearer because delegates will be spared the hustle of travelling to the city and be short changed.

ODM National Executive Committee considered his view and graciously granted it in line with its devolution ideology. However,it was all clear that Musalia was merely conjuring excuses to exit the party.Despite all his demands being met,he eventually quit ODM,aparty that resurrected his dead political career after a humiliating defeat in the historic 2002 elections to none other than a pastor and a political novice for that matter.

In his usual turn coat style, after joining hands with his partners in crime, barerly 7 months since he quit ODM,Musalia is now advocating for consensus as a method to pick the Jubilee alliance flag bearer. He is strongly opposed to delegates electing a presidential candidate.

It is indeed suprising that Musalia has now lost interest in devolution that he so much claimed to champion. If anything we would be expecting him to persuade his compatriots to have the presidential nominations held at the county level. So what has changed? Is Musalia a man to be trusted as a president? It is intriguing that he now expects democracy to flourish in a coalition where member parties have not conducted grassroots elections except URP.

Even most ironical is the fact that Musalia does not even have no UDF delegates because they do not exist. As I have stated before,Musalia has just confirmed to us that in the history of Kenya, there was only one Mudavadi, the late MOSES MUDAMBA MUDAVADI(R.I.P). As for the son of Hannah…we wish you a safe journey as you head to political oblivion.

The Jubilee coalition on Monday postponed its delegates conference to name a presidential candidate as divisions rocked the alliance, threatening to end the union of three parties.

"The Jubilee Coalition has by mutual agreement decided to postpone the delegates conference earlier slated for Tuesday, 18th December 2012 so as to allow for more time for the parties to agree on a method by which to pick the Presidential flag-bearer," said a statement by Jubilee Coalition.

The coalition's leaders Uhuru Kenyatta (URP), Musalia Mudavadi (UDF) and William Ruto (URP) met for more than 12 hours - nine hours on Sunday night and three hours Monday morning-seeking to find a common ground on presidential nominations.

The three were not helped by TNA and UDF hardliners, the former pushing for a delegates conference and the later insisting on a consensus a system to nominate a flag bearer.

The extent of the confusion was magnified by the presence of TNA delegates in Nairobi and preparations for the convention at the Moi International Stadium, Kasarani for the Jubilee coalition big day.

"We have postponed the delegates conference to 24th to give room to our party leaders to talk to consult their members over the decisions that were reached. By Friday, we should have complete lists of delegates to participate in the conference," said URP spokesman Aden Duale.

The Dujis MP refuted reports suggesting that Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto had fallen out with Mr Mudavadi with TNA and URP leaders set to revert to their initial coalition agreement.

He also clarified that the conference had been postponed, not cancelled.

"It is still on. Between today and then, the three leaders will go back to their parties to explain to them the decisions that have been reached," he said without elaborating.
