unamaanisha the same Uganda ambao wamerudi kwa kongamano la CoW... Museveni juzi alikua kenya kwa kongamano la CoW na akashangazwa jinsi vile Mizigo husafirishwa faster faster hadi kwa mpaka lakini URA inafanya kazi siku nusu na kudelay mizigo ya Uganada.... juzi alikua anamuomba Kenya a harakishe kufufua Kisumu port , so Tz is not special....

I must apologise to the people w have been affected by the Uganda Revenue Authority's half-a-day work schedule. I am directing th URA works 24 hours a day to make business easier, especially at t border points.
The electricity line to Rwanda through the Mirama Hills is now percent complete. The target is ensure that it is ready for commissioning by October this year.
I must thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for working on Kisumu port. Water transport makes business cheaper. Uganda is doin something near Entebbe to improv this water transport network. I know that Rwanda too is working towards ensuring connectivity through the Kagera River.
I challenge the technocrats to study how developing this water transport network can help the region exploit the Muko iron ore deposits using the gas under Lak Kivu.

Uganda reaping fruits of regional cooperation

did you check the price per container on the central corridor in comparison to northern corridor? i tell u JPM is eyeing a no loan repayment possibility for Kenya's SGR! $67 per ton $1320 per a 20ft container $2680 per a 40 ft container from Dar to Port Bell.

hivi unajua kua kuna meter guage kutoka msa hadi kampala which is much cheaper than road transport ? shida si cost/tonne, shida ni capacity.... kwa mfano ile meter guage ya kenya husafirisha 4 million tonnes a year tena very cheap door to door delivery... shida ni kwamba 4 million tonnes is a drop in the ocean...
same with your mwanza- port bell business of 18 containers per trip...

Kampala. After about 10 years in limbo, the MV Umoja ferry of Tanzania has resumed operations that will ease transportation of exports and imports between Uganda and Tanzania at a much reduced cost and time.
The Tanzanian ferry, which will operate on the Central Polygon route also known as the Southern route, had the first cargo officially commissioned in Kampala yesterday by Uganda’s State minister for Transport Aggrey Bagiire.

The MV Umoja operation route will run from Port Bell in Uganda to Mwanza Port, Tabora and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania using a combination of road, rail and water transport. It has a roll-on and roll-off design that allows cargo wagons to be driven in and out of the ferry by train with ease at the port of shipment or destination.

The ferry is operated jointly by Ugandan and Tanzanian authorities.
According to a joint statement by Ugandan and Tanzanian authorities, the new ferry will be of great relief to importers and exporters. The statement says transportation of a 20-feet container of imports between Kampala and Dar es Salaam will now cost $1,330, dropping from $3,500 previously, which translates into a saving of $ 2,170. A 40-feet container will cost $2,570. The current transportation cost of the same container by road was not stated.

Reduced costs
A 20-feet container of exports between Kampala and Dar es Salaam will cost $486 while a 40-feet container will cost $912. We were unable to establish the current cost by road for the same container size.
However, the statement said the discount rates are valid during the promotional period between June 1 and September 30 this year. Thereafter the rates will be revised to competitive tariffs.

Currently, the transit period for cargo between Kampala and Dar es Salaam by road is two weeks.
The statement says this transit period will also reduce considerably to three or four days.
The Rift Valley Railways, who lost the contract to run the Uganda Railways Corporation, was accused of neglecting the southern route of Kampala, Port Bell, Mwanza, Tabora and Dar es Salaam.

When the Rift Valley Railways Concession was terminated in January, the Uganda Railways Corporation took over the rail operations from RVR. It negotiated with Tanzania Ports Authority and Tanzania Railways Corporation to revive the southern route at reduced transportation fees for importers and exporters.

While launching the first operation at Port Bell in Luzira , Minister Bagiire said the re-opening of the route is additional improvement for transportation of goods to the countries in the central corridor.
“The new management will provide additional returns and these include low transport rates, about five days transit time, security of cargo, alternative access to the sea and consequently lowering the cost of doing business within the entire region,” he said.

He added that since the corridor forms part of the backbone of the regional transportation system in East and Eastern Central Africa carrying imports and exports of the five countries; Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and part of eastern DR Congo.

Kenya was the first to terminate RVR contract and Uganda too later terminated RVR, and the railway line reverted back to KR and UR who still operate the service!

Where you highlighted in red about Exports of Uganda to Dar bieng $482 per 20ft container. ... that is pointless and a potential loss making business for TRL.... because the biggest buyer of Ugandan goods is Kenya, followed by UAE, then South Sudan, then DRC, then Rwanda closing top 5... yani four of the biggest importers of Ugandan goods already border Uganda, so no need to export through Dar... and for the case of UAE... the goods exported their is lead by tea, coffee. ..of which is traded at the mombasa international auction house... which was chosen to be right close to the port... Even DRC exports her Tea through Mombasa for the same reasons,Tanzania doesnt have that advantage ... the rest of exports ni precious metals kama pearls ambazo husafirishwa na kina Emirates kwa ndege ..so you still get nada!

and like I said, 18 containers per trip is a drop in the ocean... hata muifanye bure at no charges...bado hamtatishia mtu.... every single day 1,500 trucks cross malaba border... thats 1,500 containers every 24 hours... unataka ulinganishe na 26 containers a day!!! hata muongeze meli ishirini za mizigo bado hamtafika threshold ya kushindana na Mombasa... if you want to give mombasa a run for her money, mwanzo mpanue Mwanza na port bell kama vile mnavyofanya na Dar port alafu mnunue meli mpya kubwa ya kubeba kama 500teu kwa mpigo...labda hapo ndo mtatutishia...
