Seriously men. I think nitaishi hapa for now.
Tangu lini Lamu port ikawa ni ya mikopo ya Wachina?Kaka hapa you are missing a point,
Honestly, decent trains and Brt was better idea than the stupid overpriced chinese owned expressway. Upuuzi wa Kenya hakuna Africa nzima, kukosa maono kwa viongozi wa Kenya ndio kunafanya overpriced projects za mikopo ya wachina kama SGR na Lamu port kuwa white elephants.
Buiding a two-way rail instead of a road would have costed double or triple the price of this expressway. Constructing a rail is always more expensive than constructing a road. What will make it even more expensive is that 13 km of the rail will be elevated on pillars. The Viaduct for the rail needs to be stronger than the viaducts for a normal road because a single diesel or electric multiple unit, fully loaded with passengers will weigh more than 70 tonnes. So it would have been a very expensive affair to have 13 km of reinforced bridge. SGR being built in Dar has a short viaduct of maybe 1 or 2 km but you can see how strong that bridge is. That viaduct is strong but costly to build and requires more time to build. Now imagine the Dar viaduct being constructed for 13 kilometres and now you begin to understand how costly this project could be. The Lahore line was over-budget. The Lagos metro line is a disaster. It was launched, if I am not wrong, in 2007 and 13 years later even the first phase it is not yet finished. It is a complete disaster. Metro projects tend to go over-budget or over-deadline.We are not saying everyone apande metro au BRT. What we are suggesting is that wouldn't be better to use the opportunity and resources that is now building Express toll roads to build SGR?
That would reduce congestion, it would help more people, and those who will be using their cars, won't have to pay extra to do so in tolls.
Looks like win win to me.
You seem to suggest that this expressway will not solve the traffic problem yet every person I have seen talking about this project objectively tend to agree that in the short term (5-10 years) this project will reduce traffic jam. Even if you want to argue that Kenyans will buy more cars and fill up the road again but this will not happen over-night. Kenyans are still third world people and our income per capita is still low and it will take us several years before we fill this road with cars. By the way since the expansion of Thika road, Thika road rarely experiences grid-lock traffic where cars are not moving at all. Mind you we are now more than 10 years since the expansion of Thika road and yet Traffic seems to be moving unless there is a road accident. Yet Mombasa road always experiences grid-lock traffic where cars are not moving whether there is an accident or not, whether it is rush-hour or not. Thika road had enough space for expansion outwards but Mombasa road does not have this space because it is a heavilly built area with industries and real estate so the only option is to go up. This expressway will alleviate traffic for a few years but eventually the traffic will come back again as more Kenyans buy more cars. I just wanted you to stop saying that this project will not reduce traffic because it will reduce traffic in the short term just like Thika road did and just like Ubungo flyover is doing in Tanzania but believe me, Ubungo flyover will have alot of traffic jam 20 years from now because more cars will be passing there.Your post just seems to be in denial of the screw up. Trying to make it's looks like it was ingineous plan.
The same space used for express road could be used for SGR. No building needs to be demolished. I don't even know why you felt the need to mention that. It's absolutely errelevant on this post.
The same space the same roads could be used for SGR. And instead of having an express road for only those who can afford it, you could have an SGR for everyone and solve congestion problem as the same time, for those who would still want to use their private car.
Looks like you are panicking. It's not a battle, just honest discussion.
Kama vile umeambiwa hapo, Mombasa- Kampala road is the most important and busiest road in Kenya. It experiences grid-lock traffic jam 24-7 so expansion was inevitable. Lazima upanuzi ungefanyika ila kwa sababu ya kukosa nafasi kando kando mwa barabara ikabidi ujenzi ufanyike kuelekea juu. By the way building this expressway is not mutually exclusive to building a metro rail. We can build both and in fact we are planning to build both. A French company has been given a contract to construct a rail line from JKIA to CBD. So we can do both but what disturbs me is that you have this faulty and weird idea that a road full of grid-lock traffic like Mombasa road should not be expanded and instead a metro-rail will magically reduce the traffic there. Then why did you build Ubungo flyover? You should have built a metro rail there? Expansion of roads is not a stupid thing especially for roads that have bad traffic jams. Even in Europe where they have metros and light rails and BRT and trams e.t.c they still expand their roads. Are they stupid for expanding their roads? Yes we should build metros and trams e.t.c but that doesn't mean we should stop expanding our roads, come on, that is a dud argument.Came on men. It's just a common sense. Clearly looks like you are taking personal and you are ready to defend Kenya no matter what. Which is good sometimes.
But this is a discussion. Given the opportunity, I am sure Tanzania would have build the same thing (express road). Which in my opinion is not a great option.
What I am saying, shouldn't SGR be a better option that express way.
