Arusha. In a renewed bid to woo back visitors after the devastating impact of Covid-19, 140 tourists from Israel will jet into the country next month.

The contingent is one among several in the pipeline - thanks to robust marketing by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) in the Middle East tourists source-market.

“We are readying to attract huge groups of visitors this time from Asia, eastern Europe and the Middle East,” said Ms Devotha Mdachi, TTB managing director.

She told journalists at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday that a contingent of visitors from Israel will jet in on May 14.

Ms Mdachi said other groups from the Middle East country will follow in the coming months. In recent years, Tanzania has been receiving an average of 2,000 tourists from Israel each year.

The TTB chief said this when she was seeing off 15 travel agents and tourism photographers from Israel who were in the country to sample the attractions in the northern circuit.

Ms Mdachi said beside the traditional tourist source countries of Western Europe and North America, Tanzania is now focusing on new markets in Asia and Eastern Europe.

“There is a growing interest in Tanzania tourism in eastern Europe, northern Europe and Russia. The same is true for the Far East,” Ms Mdachi said.

She said promotion efforts were underway to woo visitors from within the African continent and that TTB was using the Tanzanian diplomatic missions to market the country.

“We are getting a lot of inquiries from travel agents in West Africa. There is a significant number of visitors from South Africa and from within the East African Community (EAC) bloc,” she said.

Mr Shlomo Carmel, an executive of Another World tour company in Israel told The Citizen that his firm would organise flights for 2,000 tourists from Israel to Tanzania this year.

The company is the largest selling destination in Africa in the Middle East country. He said Tanzania has lately become one of their preferred tourism destinations.

Ms Miri Eldar who works with the airport authority in Tel Aviv said they had been excited by the wildlife splendour in Serengeti National Park and the adjacent Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

“You have wonderful tourist attractions. Tanzania is also a safe country. What a wonderful experience”, she explained.

According to TTB, tourists from Israel were estimated to be only about 3,000 in 2011.

The number increased to 4,635 in 2012 and more than tripled to 15,000 visitors by 2016..

In a span of a few years, Israel has shot to the sixth position of the leading tourist source markets for Tanzania before the outbreak of the global pandemic Covid-19

The United States has been the leading source of about 1.5 million tourists visiting the country annually followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and India.

Dubai: The Maldives has got competition as the favoured destination for Emirati travellers - and Tanzania is providing it. So far this year, 70 per cent of bookings by dnata Travel group owned Rehlaty is for outbound travel, and Maldives and Tanzania are topping the charts.

Other trending getaways for its customer include family travel to Bosnia, beach breaks in Zanzibar, and beach and wildlife adventures in Sri Lanka. "In 2021 so far, 63 per cent of our overall bookings has been by families who come to us to ease the process of arranging their holiday and all of the extra details they might be looking for,” said Rehab Mansoor, General Manager at Rehlaty by dnata Travel.

"From our destination knowledge, and in response to latest trends and requests, we have created new itineraries for the spring holiday and beyond, taking families, couples and groups of friends alike to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Bosnia.”

What’s popular in Spring?

For the Spring break, one of the travel firm’s most popular itineraries of choice covers six days in Bosnia covering its Olympic Mountains, the beautiful scenery of Lake Jablanica, and the historic town of Mostar. "Bosnia is a perfect destination for Emirati families with lots to offer, from Halal food to activities for children, family-friendly hotels, picturesque towns, the snow-covered mountain scenery and cooler temperatures," Mansoor added.

Maldives all the way

In 2020, Maldives was the destination of choice for Rehlaty’s customers. This year the trend is expected to continue. "The Maldives is more family-friendly than ever, and with its dry season extending to late April, now is an excellent time to travel,” said Mansoor.

Frequency boost

UAE’s airlines are also increase flight frequencies to top tourist destinations. Since March 28, Emirates has been offering customers 28 weekly flights to Maldives and seven weekly flights to Seychelles. “The added services will meet market demand and offer customers greater flexibility, choice and connectivity while planning their travels this Easter holiday,” the airline said in a statement last month.

The carrier was previously offering customers 24 weekly flights to the Maldives, utilising a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The Dubai airline also introduced a limited-time sale on tickets to fly to a handful of tourist destinations, which include Maldives, Seychelles, Amman, Istanbul and Moscow.

Tourists applaud Serengeti COVID-19 testing facility

FOREIGN tourists have applauded the recent decision by Tanzanian authorities to put up a Covid-19 testing centre within the Serengeti National Park, saying it saves time and resources.

The facility was rolled out by the park authorities in collaboration with the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO).

Chris Mears, the chief executive officer for the African Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA), sounded this appreciation in a letter to TATO CEO Sirili Akko, affirming that the opening of the Covid-19 testing centre at Seronera in Serengeti was well received by ATTA members and their clients travelling to Tanzania.

ATTA is a member-driven trade association that promotes tourism to Africa from all corners of the world. Recognised as the voice of African tourism, ATTA serves and supports businesses in Africa representing buyers and suppliers of tourism products across 21 African countries.

Mears said ATTA members and tourists are impressed as the testing centre enables travellers to maximise their time in the parks and avoid cutting short their safaris to facilitate the testing required for their onward journey.

Dr. Wilbrod Slaa, the country’s ambassador to Sweden and the Scandinavia, said in a communication that key travel agents are encouraged by the move to set up the Covid-19 specimen collection center within the park.

“Scandinavian travel agents cite the rollout of the Serengeti testing center as appropriate as it uplifts the mood among potential tourists. It is major step in attracting a significant number of holidaymakers in the near future,” the envoy noted.

Key tour operators confirm that the pioneer Covid-19 specimen collection center has started stimulating new bookings.

Francisca Masika, the Director of Nature Responsible, said that for a month now, the firm has seen a surge of bookings with our prospective tourists citing the pioneer center at Serengeti as having convinced them to book safari.

Over the past month the company has received a total of 48 safari booking enquiries and 39 out of them were confirmed, and the rest remain on their desks.

She praised the collaboration between TANAPA, TATO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in setting up the facility, saying it will contribute to faster recovery of the tourism industry in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.

TATO chairman Willy Chambulo said that these efforts had started to pay dividends by enhancing the flow of tourism traffic by stimulating new bookings.

Commencing its operations on 13th February, 2021, the Seronera Covid-19 sample collection center is the first of its kind in the country, located at the heart of the Serengeti.

The park authorities have also deployed a fleet of recently procured ambulances in key national parks to render urgent services in case of need, after skies were reopened mid last year, with the vehicles being allocated to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro National Park and the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem.

Recently, TATO inked a deal with North American based, CornerSun Destination Marketing, to lead its tourism recovery strategy amidst the continuing COVID-19 environment and vaccination drives in Europe and North America.

CornerSun will combine its targeted communications expertise and strong travel trade relations in the North American market to amplify awareness and visibility of the destination, to enhance future visitation.

“We are proud to partner with an agency such as CornerSun that has the strength and know-how to help Destination Tanzania not only to recover from this pandemic, but build back better,” said Akko, taking up a trending American adage.

“We are confident in their ability to broaden the reach of our recovery strategy and help position Tanzania as a safe, top-of-mind destination amongst key North American travelers as the world begins to travel again.”

Akko was grateful to the UNDP for supporting TATO’s efforts to diversify its marketing strategy in order to attract more visitors and boost tourism numbers in the aftermath of the pandemic.

UNDP is supporting TATO as it implements its ‘Tourism Recovery Strategy’ to help spur businesses, recover thousands of lost jobs and generate revenue for the economy.

Representing over 300 tour operators, TATO is a leading liaison agency for the tourism industry, with their combined earnings estimated at $2.05bn and equivalent to 17 percent of the country’s GDP.

Rawan Dakik, on Wednesday became the first Tanzanian woman to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak on day when the first fatalities were recorded on the mountain.

Two climbers from the United States and Switzerland have died on Mount Everest, the first fatalities of this year's season, expedition organisers in Nepal said Thursday.

But in recent seasons, Everest has seen a surge in the number of climbers, leading to overcrowding that has been blamed for multiple deaths.

"Two climbers passed away on Wednesday," Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks told AFP.

Swiss climber Abdul Waraich, 40, died near the summit after reaching the top and suffering exhaustion, said Chhang Dawa Sherpa from the same organisation.

Planning

Speaking of her journey to the world’s highest peak on an Instagram story, Rawan said that climbing Mountain Everest is probably one of the hardest things she has done before.

According to her she is waiting for the weather window alongside her team to push for the summit.

“Base camp was hit by a snow storm for a few days which caused damage in the icefall and a short delay to our schedule. We are waiting for the icefall doctors to head up and fix the route before pushing to our first rotation,” she writes.

On March 20, 2021 she announced that she would be climbing Mountain Everest to support children living with Cancer.

“A few years ago if you’d ask me about climbing Everest, I would’ve probably told you that you're mad and I wouldn’t plan on going that extreme. Here I am today, packing and getting ready for my departure tomorrow,” said Rawan in an Instagram post.

She added: There was a lot of planning, training, organizing, a feel of mixed emotions, trip getting cancelled last year and a bunch of thoughts that can’t be put into words.

Fatalities

Eleven people died climbing the world's highest peak in 2019, with four deaths blamed on overcrowding.

On one day, 354 people were lined up to reach the top from Nepal's southern side and Tibet's northern approach.

To ease the crowding Nepal's tourism ministry announced rules capping the number of people who can summit the mountain per window of suitable weather.

Expedition organisers have been told to send teams up the peak strictly in accordance with permit numbers or limit the number of climbers going up at one time.

Lufthansa Group to add seven long-haul routes under 'Eurowings Discover' brand

21 May 2021 by Mark Caswell

Eurowings Discover

Lufthansa Group has announced plans to launch seven long-haul leisure services for summer 2022 under its newly branded Eurowings Discover subsidiary.

The routes include flights from Frankfurt to Fort Myers, Panama City, Salt Lake City and Kilimanjaro, and from Munich to Punta Cana, Cancun and Las Vegas.

The flights will go on sale on May 26 at lufthansa.com, and will be operated by Eurowings Discover, which the group says “is specialized in tourist travel from the Frankfurt and Munich hubs”.

Simpleflying.com reports that Lufthansa Group had originally planned to call its new long-haul leisure brand ‘Ocean’, but a rethink has seen the carrier launch as a spin-off to the Eurowings brand.

The report also says that the subsidiary will initially operate with three A330 aircraft, and will aim to compete with German charter carrier Condor.
Twice weekly flights from Munich to Punta Cana, Cancun and Las Vegas will launch in March 2022, as will thrice weekly services from Frankfurt to Fort Myers and Panama City.

These will be followed by three flights per week from Frankfurt to Salt Lake City from May 2022, and twice weekly services from Frankfurt to Kilimanjaro in June 2022.

Earlier this year Lufthansa outlined plans to offer “the most extensive range of vacation destinations in years” this summer, with an increase in destinations from both Frankfurt and Munich.

The carrier is adding 20 new leisure routes from Frankfurt and a further 13 new destinations from Munich, with a “special focus” on routes to the Caribbean, the Canary Islands and Greece.

Billed as the charity’s biggest-ever Industry Leader Challenge (ILC) fundraiser, The Climb will aim to raise £300,000 when participants bid to reach the African mountain’s summit from October 30 to November 8.

The challenge had previously been scheduled for 2020 but, like Ben’s annual Ben Ball fund-raiser,was set back by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ben is now inviting more automotive leaders and aspiring leaders to come forward and take part in The Climb in a bid to maximise the impact of the fund-raising challenge.

JCT600 chief executive John Tordoff and director of customer experience Andy Bateman have already signed-up to represent the car retail sector by taking on the challenge alongside Marshall commercial development director Adrian Wallington and VW divisional head of sales Clive McGregor.

Matt Wigginton, director of partnerships, engagement and income at Ben, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to climb one of the most iconic peaks in the world, while also doing something incredible to ensure no-one in our industry has to face life’s toughest challenges alone.

“We all have our own mountains to climb at some point in our lives, so we felt that this challenge was very fitting. Now more than ever, automotive people need Ben – and we need you and your support.

“We are so excited to reach the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with some of the most intrepid leaders in our industry.

“All money raised through this challenge will help Ben provide much-needed support to those in our industry who are tackling their own personal mountains in life, especially right now.”

In 2016, Marshall chief executive Daksh Gupta raised over £151,000 with a sky dive – the very first Ben Industry Leader Challenge.

The challenge is inspired by Sarah Sillars OBE, who took on Mount Kilimanjaro over 10 years ago, raising an incredible £38,000 for Ben.

Luxury beaches that you must visit in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is considered the land of beaches. It has many beautiful beaches where you can catch the sunrise, swim, and try various water sports activities. For your convenience, we will enlist some of the best luxury beaches to visit in Zanzibar, which you can visit during your stay in Tanzania.

Paje Beach

Paje Beach is located on the south coast of Zanzibar. With its long stretches of white sand, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Tanzania. You can find many palm trees swaying in the breeze. Tourists can enjoy exquisite sunsets and turquoise waters here.
The best thing about Paje Beach is its peaceful and quiet environment. For this reason, you can visit it as a replacement for other busier and more developed beaches in the north of Zanzibar.

The best sports activity you can try here is scuba diving because of the warm and clean waters here. The reefs offshore are home to starfish, moray eels, trumpet fish, and turtles.

There are many local shops here where you can buy different products wrapped in banana leaves. The best product in Paje Beach shops is the soap made by collecting seaweed at low tides. You should buy one or two bars of this soap because it is good for skincare and serves as a great souvenir!

If you’re looking for a remote, luxury-feeling beach, try visiting the Paje beach!

Bwejuu Beach

This white sandy beach is located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar. It is lined with beautiful palm trees. Most of the tourists travel to Bwejuu Beach for relaxation and its reef safari.

You can do plenty of activities around the area of Bwejuu Beach, such as taking a dhow boat trip and exploring the mangrove forest. A reef safari, snorkeling, and diving are some other popular activities here. You can also visit the Jozani Forest in Bwejuu Beach, the Red Colobus Monkey house.

Michamvi Beach

Michamvi Beach is located on the central east coast of Zanzibar, and it is present in the form of a peninsula. It is considered a Remote Coral Lagoon due to its long stretches of empty beaches.

However, you can stay in two large beach resorts present in the area. Michamvi Peninsula has two major parts, Michamvi-Kae and Michamvi-Pingwe.

Beautiful palm-fringed beaches and a great coral lagoon with Michamvi-Pingwe are located on the eastern side of Michamvi Beach. The Michamvi-Kae is situated on the western side facing west towards Chwaka Bay.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi Beach is located on the northeast coast of Zanzibar. It is considered one of the most glorious beaches in Zanzibar. Numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, and resorts are present in the area of Nungwi Beach, which offers a colorful variety of entertainment at night time.

However, this beach is not only for party-lovers. It has a fantastic and magnificent coral reef which provides a perfect opportunity for diving and snorkeling. You can see much aquatic life here as well, such as green turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, and various fish species. You can experience a beautiful sunset here while sailing on a dhow sailing boat.

Kendwa Beach

Kendwa Beach is referred to as the "little sister" of Nungwi Beach. Kendwa Beach is world-famous due to its clear waters, which are perfect for diving and snorkeling.

It is one of a few beaches of Zanzibar where the tide does not change. This beach is home to beautiful and colorful starfish. You can see many starfish laying just offshore.

However, keep in mind that you cannot pick them up and disturb their natural habitat. Kendwa Beach is also famous for its legendary sunsets. The beach comes alive in a new style once the sun dips below the horizon. It is a perfect time for relaxed beach parties and nightlife.

Matemwe Beach

Matemwe Beach is the longest beach in Zanzibar. If you want to see some of the finest sand on the islands of Zanzibar, Matemwe Beach is the best option.

Surrounded by beautiful palm trees, you can find traditional fishing villages here. These traditional villages perfectly represent the local culture of Matemwe. The area around Matemwe Beach is the best place for snorkeling and diving on the islands of Zanzibar.

You can also try kitesurfing and sailing here.

Final words

The beaches of Zanzibar are worth visitingdue to their beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing nature. Moreover, all of them are as luxury as it can get!
