Tanzania plans cruise ship along country's coastline
WITH a coastline stretching over 1400 kilometers, Tanzania, a country which also extends its territory to a vast number of islands and islets within the Indian Ocean waters, plans investing in cruise tourism.

Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Damas Ndumbaro.

That was stated by the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Damas Ndumbaro during his special meeting with delegates from the European Union Business Group (EUPG) that discussed the future of Tanzania's tourism industry.

The minister invited investors in the sector to consider ventures in other areas of tourism, yet to be fully explored, despite their potential.

Luxury cruise ships was mentioned as one area which can attract new types of tourists in the country, taking into consideration that national parks like Saadan as well as historical sites like Kilwa ruins are all located along the coastline and can be linked by cruise ships.

He mentioned areas such as beach tourism on the mainland, because at the moment the sun-and-sand type of leisure travel is mostly taking place in the Zanzibar isles.

"We are aiming to record at least 5 million international tourists arrivals by the year 2025 and this can only be realised through diversification of tourism products," stated Ndumbaro, adding that in four years' time the country was targeting to raise US $6 billion from tourism.

Before Covid-19 outbreak, Tanzania was experiencing steady climb of tourists traffic of 1.5 million arrivals per annum. The sector suffered a massive decline between 2019 and 2021 during the pandemic period.

The executive director of the European Union Business Group, Cikay Richard said they had organised the meeting in order to bring together investors in the Tanzanian tourism industry with the ministry and other government officials to chart revival of the country's leisure travel industry in the post corona pandemic era.

But for other participants, it is not just the global pandemic which hit the country's tourism industry; myriad of taxes and high charges of the same, discouraged both investments and visitors as made the destinations expensive.

They were of the view that, with limited direct flights from various parts of the world to Tanzania, traveling was already cumbersome and expensive for tourists coming to the country and therefore there was no need for the visitors to pay high taxes upon arrival in the country.

Tanzania has been voted ‘Africa’s leading Destination in 2021′ according to the just released World Travel Awards (WTA) results for the year 2021.

Apparently, the country has been nominated in the ‘Africa’s leading Destination’ category since 2008, but this year 2021, Tanzania finally managed to win this highly coveted continental tourism title.

It also happens to be a “Triple victory,” for the country, because Zanzibar Island has again been voted ‘Africa’s leading Beach Destination.’

The Hotel Verde on the Island (also known as Azam Luxury Resort and Spa), has on the other hand grabbed the ‘Africa’s leading Green Hotel 2021,’ award.

And, as expected, Serengeti has once again won the 2021 ‘Africa’s leading National Park,’ title in this year’s World Travel Awards.

Still within the National Park, the ‘Four Seasons Safari Lodge’ of Serengeti, has also been declared ‘Africa’s leading Luxury Lodge 2021,’ at WTA.

There is also another win for Tanzania this year, in form of the rather exclusive ‘Thanda Island’ in Mafia, which has won the ‘Africa’s Leading Luxury Island’ award 2021.

Thanda Island has not only won the continent’s top position but also emerged the top Global WTA destination having been declared ‘World Leading Exclusive Private Island in 2021.’

There is another win for other Islands in the country, for instance, the Chapwani Private Island of Zanzibar which has been named ‘Africa’s leading Private Island 2021,’ winning the title for the second year in a row, the first time being in 2020.

Dar es Salaam. The allocation of tourist hunting blocks through auction has earned government Sh19.2 billion up from the 5.24 billion that was collected previous auction.

This was said by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mary Masanja on Monday, saying it was the sixth auction of hunting blocks since it was launched in 2019.

"In the sixth auction which commenced on January 12 and lasted for seven a total of 75 tourist hunting blocks, with 49 of which ownership will expired on December 31, 2021 and other 26 blocks were vacant. A total of 39 companies participated in the auction and of those 26 equivalent to 54.2 percent won 45 tourist hunting blocks,” she said.

Furthermore, Ms Masanja explained a total of Sh14.32 billion was collected with Sh392.7 million collected from application fees and Sh13.86 billion from hunting block fees.

However, she said the government decided to allocate hunting blocks through auction with the aim of increasing transparency and allowing market competition to show the real value of the country's resources.

“For example one category III hunting block which was to be sold through a tender of Sh41.58 million was sold for 462 million which is 11 times the bid price and category II hunting blocks was to be sold for 69.3 million but sold over for 577 million,” she said.

Auction of hunting blocks has resumed after it was put on halt for almost two years.

The blocks are graded in categories one-to-three, and bidders pay different fees, depending on the category of the block.

In March 2020, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism postponed the electronic auctioning of the vacant hunting blocks – initially scheduled for March 5 that year – until further notice. The decision was made due to complaints from some stakeholders, as well as market instability caused by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
