Lash Fary, founder of Distinctive Assets, said: “A great gift has nothing to do with the retail value.

“For years we have been breaking one of the cardinal rules of gift-giving by disclosing the price tag.

“Instead we are trying to start a new tradition by simply celebrating the fun and festive nature of this legendary gift bag.

“At the end of the day, the movie industry is about allowing viewers to escape reality and enter a fantasy world.

“We hope we also do that in some small way for these hard-working nominees who have given us this year’s best performances – helping them relax, indulge and even give back after one of the most intensely hectic weeks of their lives.”

Kenyan travel and tourism industry players will participate in the ITB Berlin expo this week.

The fair will take place between March 7 and 11. Kenya will send 42 tourism players.

Participants include hoteliers, tourist boards, tour operators, system providers, airlines and car rental companies.

Traders will network with top travel agents and get information on the global tourism sector.

About 100,000 exhibitors from 180 countries will attend the expo and seek to get a share of Europe’s tourism and travel market. “Although Europe is the leading tourist source market for Kenya accounting for a 36 per cent share of the total international arrivals in 2017, the German market, ranked six, is among the most resilient source markets for Kenya,” KTB chief executive Betty Radier said yesterday in a statement.

She said the board aims to attract the youth, extended families and honeymooners to visit Kenya. The German market recorded 13.2 per cent increase in arrivals to 49,247 visitors compared to 43,502 travellers in 2016.

Last year, Kenya shrugged off uncertainty associated with the long election season to record a 9.8 per cent growth in total international arrivals by air, sea and cross-border to top 1,474,671 visitors compared to 1,342,899 arrivals in 2016.

Your Next Luxury Safari: Asilia's Jabali Ridge in Southern Tanzania

Ann Abel
, CONTRIBUTORI know the difference between expensive travel and the truly luxurious Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of the chemical company INEOS, began writing his version of that story, investing $10 million in a sustainable tourism and conservation effort in southern Tanzania—some of the country’s most vast, rugged and wildlife-rich national parks and reserves, which see only a fraction of the visitors who go to northern parks like the Serengeti. One of the southern parks, Ruaha, is home to 10% of the world’s remaining lion population and quite a few of the elephants, but because tourism has been sparse, it has been under threat from human encroachment and poaching.

Asilia

“My view is that human encroachment is the greatest threat to endangered wildlife and that the only way that humans and wildlife will happily coexist is when the local human population have a strong vested interest in preserving the wildlife population,” says Ratcliffe, who has also invested heavily in conservation efforts in Iceland. “The challenge is to create jobs and livelihoods that achieve the conservation objective, and the success of such a strategy is probably best illustrated in the Okavango Delta. That is the model that we are trying to replicate in southern Tanzania.”

Ratcliffe partnered with Asilia, one of the continent’s most admired safari companies, to bring tourists to new regions, create jobs in them. It’s nothing new for Asilia, which is funded by the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth fund and has operated since 2004, offering a particularly soulful style of safari—the name means “authentic”—in various corners of Tanzania and Kenya. There’s a strong commitment to hiring locally, training hard and, the leadership hopes, eventually having camps and lodges staffed entirely by Tanzanians and Kenyans. A lot of staff have been with the company since the beginning, and former waiters are now managers.

Roho Ya Selous

The investment is meant to create a new southern circuit in Tanzania, with Asilia’s existing, rustic Kwihala Camp in Ruaha National Park and two new properties. Roho Ya Selous is right in line with many Asilia camps—not a lot of architectural bells and whistles but perfectly comfortable tents with indoor bathrooms and cooling systems, in a vast setting. The Selous Game Reserve is known for its wild dogs, and before I even finished the drive to camp from the airstrip, my guide had taken me to see a pack of several dozen. (I stayed at the camps as a guest of Asilia.)

But it’s the new Jabali Ridge that makes the most compelling case for Ratcliffe's vision. It is, unsurprisingly, atop a ridge, with tremendous views over wide savannas dotted with spiky palms and bulblike baobab trees. It’s built on and around giant boulders, with the eight rooms (it's a stretch to call them tents) linked by a series of winding, climbing walkways.

Designed by the same team as Asilia’s recent Highlands camp near the Ngorongoro Crater, where the tents are striking geodesic domes, Jabali Ridge’s eight accommodations have clear mesh “walls” behind louvered shutters, rough-hewn furnishings, invitingly textured linens on their king-size beds, indoor and outdoor sitting areas, and full-on bathrooms with rain showers. There’s also the three-bedroom Jabali Private House, which can be rented by one group and comes with a plunge pool and optional private chef.

The pool at Jabali Ridge

At the main camp, there’s an infinity pool, a spa and a seriously inviting lounge for when you want to skip a game drive or walk. And many guests do. A camp manager at the time told me that Jabali Ridge works well as a last stop on a safari circuit, when there’s less pressure to go on every excursion. That’s partly because Ruaha is enormous so the wildlife (and the human) density isn’t what you’d find it some other parks. It’s also because it’s a gorgeous environment. It’s a place to relax and enjoy the scenery and the remoteness. And, she said, it's working well for conservation—poaching has decreased in the six months it has been open.

And even if you stay put, wildlife encounters are likely. One evening dinner was delayed because lions had camped out under the walkways and we had to wait in our tents while the staff to encouraged them to move. I’ve been on plenty of safaris, but that story is one that I’d never told before I went to Jabali Ridge.

Tanzania will in July take delivery of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner as it seeks to support its national airline to play a bigger role in the regional aviation market dominated by Ethiopian, Kenyan and Rwandan carriers.

The government expects two new Bombardier CS300s, whose purchase agreements have been finalised.

Two years ago, Tanzania developed a programme to revitalise its national carrier — Air Tanzania. The programme included purchasing six new aircraft between 2016 and 2018, payment of debts and provision of start-up capital, improvement and modernisation of business systems.

Boeing confirmed Dar’s order for one 787-8 Dreamliner, which is valued at $224.6 million to be operated by Air Tanzania.

“I am pleased to welcome Air Tanzania as the newest member of the Dreamliner family. We are honoured that Air Tanzania has chosen the 787 to operate its long-haul operations,” said Van Rex Gallard, sales vice-president for Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.

Air Tanzania said the Dreamliner will be its flagship aircraft as it renews and grows its fleet.

The fleet improvement programme, whichThe EastAfrican has seen, includes the purchasing of six aircraft. These include three Bombardier DASH8 Q400s, which it currently uses for domestic routes between Dar es Salaam and the Comoros islands, Mwanza, Kigoma and Mtwara.

The plan shows that by July this year, Air Tanzania will be operating the fleet of seven aircraft. It has been operating one Bombardier DASH8 Q300 since 2011.

“We aim to establish our long-haul capability by starting flights to Europe, Asia and the US in the short-term and the 787 Dreamliner is the perfect aircraft to achieve this ambition,” said Air Tanzania chief executive officer Ladislaus Matindi.

It is understood that Tanzania signed a firm purchase agreement with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft for the two Bombardier Q400 aircraft in July 2016 and the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner five months later.

Mr Matindi said that the Bombardier C300s would be used to open up to six regional routes in Southern and West Africa as the airline angle to capture a share of the markets.

“We are looking at South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe and in future expanding to West Africa with Ghana and Nigeria firmly on our sight. We will, however, use the Dreamliner for intercontinental routes to China and India initially, followed by Europe in a second phase.

“We are already in talks with Boeing and the government to have a second delivery of the same aircraft in the near future,” Mr Matindi aid.

Air Tanzania is also expecting to undergo International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification before June, which will now enable it to enter into commercial partnerships with other operators as it seeks to grow its revenue via code share agreements.

The IOSA is an evaluation system designed to access the operational management and control systems of an airline putting it at par with the international aviation standards.

The Cummins QSK95 will allow the 'Kilimanjaro VII' to carry more passengers while maintaining similar top speeds as its smaller sister ship
INDUSTRY DATABASE

CUMMINS MARINE

Azam Marine has chosen two Cummins QSK95 propulsion engines to provide main propulsion power for its next passenger ferry Kilimanjaro VII, the first QSK95 powered passenger ferry in the world.

The QSK95 is the newest Cummins engine offers a power output previously exclusive to medium-speed marine engines with power ratings from 3200 hp to 4200 hp, but this model has a more compact installation and exceptional fuel efficiency compared to other engines in the same class.

“The QSK95 is a perfect fit for highly sophisticated vessels such as Kilimanjaro VII,” said Jim Schacht, executive director – Cummins Global Marine Business. “This product fully leverages Cummins unique experience with our in-house technologies such as turbo chargers, filtration and electronics delivering increased power and reliability, fast transient response and simple serviceability.”

Economic advantage

Mr Schacht added that the engine also offers extended service and more cost-effective rebuilds, a further economic advantage for high-hour, hardworking vessels such as passenger transport, tugs, inland waterway towboats, crew boats, dredges and government patrol vessels.

The QSK95 will allow the 45m Kilimanjaro VII to carry more passengers while maintaining similar top speeds as its smaller sister ship, the Kilimanjaro VI.

Kilimanjaro VII will utilise water jet propulsion to reach its target top speed of 32 knots. Providing house load electrical power will be a pair of Cummins 6C-C Power marine generator sets producing 126 kWe power each.

The fast catamaran hull of the vessel was designed by Incat Crowther and it will be built by Australian company Richardson Devine Marine in Tasmania.

Azam Marine and Coastal Fast Ferries operate passenger ferry boats between the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania.
