Mr Macharia has said that the oil will be sold to international buyers through competitive bidding. Refining firms and international traders will be invited to bid once the cargo is stockpiled at Kenya Petroleum Refineries in Mombasa.
Mr Kamau said international tender for submission of bids is expected to be floated before the end of 2018 and crude will be sold to a bidder who offers Kenya the best price.

Kenya oil has a sulfur content of less than 0.5 which makes it light and sweet..so as far as fetching money is concerned, its quality is not a problem. .. the only problem is that its also waxy which requires constant heating before it gets to the refinery which is bound to increase transport costOil Refinaries close to mombasa are in india, the gulf and south east asia (Malaysia/singapore). Its too far from the normal opec oil fields and the quantity is too small 400k barrels per 6 months or 800k barrels per year since transport is by road. The quality of crude is also not the best(Heavy-sour) unlike gulf (Sweet-light).Its costly to refine this type as it requires some mixing with light crude. Mostly the crude will be sold at throwaway prices.
