Isuzu East Africa yesterday suffered a blow after City Hall banned its two-high capacity buses from city routes over design concerns.

The county government yesterday said the buses do not meet the specifications set out by the Ministry of Transport and the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.

โ€œWe will not allow them on our roads because if we do, then other people will come with their own buses as long as they are high capacity,โ€ Transport executive Mohamed Dagane said.

Vehicle manufacturers are jostling for a share of high capacity buses after it emerged that the government is working to introduce Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system to revamp public transport and reduce the congestion.

Dagane said the team had agreed on specific features which were supposed to be gazetted by the Kenya Bureau of standards.

The buses are supposed to have flat floors without stairs on the doors, the aisle should be wider to allow two or three people to pass at ago.

โ€œThere was also specific size of the door and the number of doors that such buses should have because when we talk of BRT, we are taking about the capacity, efficiency and time,โ€ he said.

Already a lane has been dedicated for the buses on Thika Superhighway awaiting arrival of 100 high capacity buses that the government is planning to import.

The Isuzu buses have a speed limit of 60 kph and can ferry between 62 and 100 passengers at a go. The firm said the buses are locally assembled and specifically designed for Kenyaโ€™s BRT system.

โ€œWe have to be careful with what we allow on our roads because we might end up in the same trouble like the one we are in,โ€ Dagane told the Star yesterday.

why do you still imports vehicle parts and vehicles made in kenya if they are substandard?
we import vehicles and vehicle parts from Kenya? Which vehicles mzee baba? If you think vehicle companies don't have service offices in Tanzania, think again. Not only do we import cars from original manufacturers but we also make ( not assemble ) our own cars.

You don't have to insult people to feel superior. Man up

ndio ujue wewe ni maembe mkubwa mabasi yamebaniwa kwa sababu ya design, sio quality...it has nothing to do with quality...mfano stairs hazikuwa ziwekwe, mlango ulifaa uwee pana zaidi na nakadhalika...In simple terms, the buses are okay as they can still be used for other routes. However, the design does not match the specifications that were required for the NRB Bus Rapid Transit project...

Low Quality Can be because of many things including bad design that affects safelty and utility.. Stop splitting hairs, The buses have been banned

and may I ask why they've been banned according to you?...hizo basi zinaweza fanya kazi hata New York...hivyo hakuna shida ya quality hapo...ni design tu ndio haikumatch specifications...plus it is very easy for Isuzu EA to change the design to match City Hall's specifications..basi zilitengenezwa mbili au tatu tu...hivyo sioni shida yoyote hapo...na hizi watauza uganda au kwingine..subiri tu uone

They have been banned for pathetic design. No BRT can operate such buses. If Isuzu cannot get it with the first try, it means they have no experience, let them continue with building lorries and Rag tag matatus that kill thousands every year
